FACTOR4Factor4 is a relatively new autologous entry to the Australian aesthetics marketplace.

“The way Factor4 is processed is very different from PRP,” says Shaun Baldwin, CEO of its distributor, Klinic Solutions.

“It is an Autologous Conditioned Serum. There are no cells in the Factor4 serum. It produces a concentration of the body’s own growth factors at a level four times that of blood. Hence the name.

“But it also elevates the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-1Ra. It is this cytokine that creates an environment to allow GFs to do their work. We have injected into tissue, so this creates an effect. The IL-1Ra soothes the inflammation.

“It was originally developed for soft tissue injuries and to fight osteo-arthritis. Clinics that are staffed by doctors with an interest in treating this type of problem can help their patients on many levels.

“There are now 37 practices in Australia and New Zealand using Factor4.”

Shaun says its primary applications and benefits are preventative and anti-ageing; for skin on the face, neck, décolletage and the backs of the hands, to reduce crepiness, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, help correct scars and stretch marks, and also address dark circles under the eyes.

“The drawn blood is then incubated for between six and nine hours, exposing it to pyrogenic-free surfaces. This elicits a vigorous and rapid increase in the synthesis of growth factors.

“Following centrifugation (the blood is “spun” to separate its components), serum extraction and filtration, the serum is portioned and stored in a freezer at -18°C.”

“Because of the incubation period, the serum extracted is more GF-rich than if re-injected into a patient immediately.”

REGENPRP, distributed by Australasian Medical and Scientific Ltd, is defined as having concentrations of platelets above baseline levels, which contains at least seven growth factors, SPA+CLINIC's research has found.

Cell ratios in normal blood contain only six percent platelets. In PRP there is a concentration of 94 percent platelets.

Platelets contain a number of proteins, cytokines and other bioactive factors that initiate and regulate basic aspects of natural wound healing.

Circulating platelets secrete growth factors, such as platelet-derived GF (stimulates cell replication, angiogenesis), vascular endothelial GF (angiogenesis), fibroblast GF (proliferation of myoblasts and angiogenesis), and insulin-like GF-1 (mediates growth and repair of skeletal muscle), among others. Activated platelets “signal” to distant repair cells, including adult stem cells, to come to the injury site. Increasing the volume of platelets accordingly increases the subsequent influx of repair and stem cells.

Because the concentrated platelets are suspended in a small volume of plasma, the three plasma proteins fibrin, fibronectin, and vitronectin contribute to a repair matrix. You could compare it to planting seeds with fertiliser.

PRP was initially developed in the 1970s and first used in 1987 in an open heart surgery procedure.

Doctors have used PRP therapy since the mid-1990s to aid bone healing after spinal injury and soft tissue recovery following plastic surgery.

In 1999 PRP was discovered or invented by different companies catering to oral and plastic surgeons because they saw an enhanced healing when they were doing reconstructive surgery.
