Well, neither actually; it’s more business as usual, for now. I regret that I cannot be with you corporeally this afternoon as I am not skiving before I’ve been in post five minutes, but am attending the Regional AGM and Conference in Long Eaton – or will be provided Elizabeth Toseland and I don’t end up caught forever in some urban one-way system in deepest Midlands. The theme of this event is (somewhat ironically – see me later if you want to know why) “Participation”, which is, indeed, what the U3A is about or should be. Leadership works best when it responds rather than imposes: as all Trekkies and Vulcans know, “the needs of the many [should] outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.” In other words, the U3A should be membership-led rather than dictated to from above. Of course we need Leaders – there would be no Interest Groups without them – even if it were solely on an admin basis. Membership does, however, carry responsibilities: if you see a “gap in the market”, think about filling it; support your Leaders, including Committee, by being prepared to stand in for them or ultimately take over from them. Don’t be put off if you are a newbie; no one is going to think you pushy or presumptuous. On the contrary, they’ll have your hand off. With Participation goes Co-operation, and we are fortunate in KU3A to have friendly links with Ise U3A, as will also be demonstrated at the Conference: in the afternoon there will be a musical spot filled by Ise Singing for Pleasure Group, a good half of whose members, including Yours Truly belong to Kettering; participation and co-operation in action. This seems to have turned out something of a mission statement after all, so I’ll leave the last word to Sir Henry Wotton, quoted in the Times recently: How happy is he born and taught / That serveth not another’s will; / Whose armour is his honest thought,/ And simple truth his utmost skill! From the Chairman Mission Statement or After the Lord Mayor’s Show? Well, neither actually; it’s more business as usual, for now. Card Making 1 — It was full house for Card Making in

July. It was good to find members keen to try my new toy, the Cuttlebug die cutter. I have acquired more dies now so much more to tempt members. Also a new rubber stamp was used to good effect and as always, lovely creative and original cards were produced. I would like to say a big thank you to Marilyn for buying us an envelope maker. It will be good to make pretty envelopes for special cards. I owe a debt of gratitude to Marian Tucker who has kindly given up her place on a Tuesday morning in order to allow a new recruit to join from the waiting list. Marian and I will meet monthly to exchange ideas and equipment when needed so she remains very much in touch with the group. I apologise for entering the wrong dates in the June newsletter but nobody was fooled! The dates for August are Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th. Usual time and place. I hope the members will give a big shout for my Grand-daughter Helen Jenkins as she competes in the Commonwealth Games triathlon. Come on Hel! Contact: Mary Earl 01536 522456

Bookworms — At our June meeting, we watched the DVD of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and all agreed that, having read the book the previous month, we enjoyed the film the second time around (most of us had seen it at the cinema a couple of years ago). We were able to identify the book characters with those in the film. In fact, the Hotel seems like desirable retirement location! We are now going to read Jo Jo Moyes "Me Before You" for our July book. Our group is full, but if anyone wants to start Bookworms 2, I will be happy to assist in the setting up. Contact: Pauline Parkin 01536 799197

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who

meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Card Making 2 — We meet on the 3rd Monday of

each month at my house. June saw us learning a new skill of Iris Folding. Well it was a new skill for some of us anyway. Starting off with the fan card and following detailed patterns our individual cards were made. For the next card our expert card makers showed their skills and individualism whilst making beautiful butterflies. Thank you ladies for making such varied cards. We meet again on 21st July and 18th August. Please let me know if you are not coming Contact: Marian Tucker 01536 510 354 [email protected]

Canals & Waterways — We had a most

enjoyable day in London in June. Eleven of us met at Bedford train station, the journey was a little slower than expected due to a backlog of trains. The Canal museum was interesting as the building was the site of the first ice house and subsequent ice cream making in this country. We had lunch by the canal and then walked to Camden along the towpath. Camden market was lively with an assortment of stalls and interesting characters. Although we had considered taking the "waterbus" to Little Venice we found a narrow boat that started this side of the lock and therefore had the experience of going through the lock both ways. The lady gave an interesting talk as we travelled along the canal. Some of us walked back to St Pancras, others took the bus back via the pub!! We are fully booked for the boat trip in July. On August 21st we shall be going to Birmingham again for a canal walk. If you are interested in joining us please let me know. Contact: Christine Strachan 01536 515730 [email protected]

Computer Group —

There is a break now until we restart in the Autumn with a new programme. Please send me your requests and suggestions for it. As always, you can contact me for any computer related advice or problems. Information from past sessions as well as useful training hand outs and videos can be accessed at www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk Contact: Richard Boyles 01536 744 753 e-mail: [email protected] Also personal help at www.Computing121.co.uk

Country Matters — In June we enjoyed a fantastic

walk in Titchmarsh Wood near Sudborough, although somewhat muddy in places (the use of ‘somewhat’ being slightly understated)! We were blessed with yet another glorious day, the highlight of the walk was spotting a Red Kite’s nest with the parent birds flying overhead. Several butterflies were seen as well as damsel flies. July’s meeting organised for 10th July in Welford will have taken place by the time the magazine is in print. August’s meeting is a visit to Geddington meeting in the car park of the White Lion Thursday 8th August at 10.30am. Contact: Derek Warren 01536 518 560 [email protected]

Friday Pop-in - We meet at the Toller Church

rooms 10 – 11.30 on the first Friday of every month. New members please come and join us for coffee, exchange of books, magazines and local news. We need your support. Contact: Sue Hince 01536 521023

Discussion Group — We met in June to discuss the

merits of eating horse meat as prescribed by Princess Anne and an interesting topic it proved to be. Some members had enjoyed having it from the menu whilst holidaying in France and assured us that it was pleasant to eat. We gave thought to the premise that the Welfare of horses would improve if there was a viable market but there were doubts that food safety could be properly managed considering that much medication given to horses is not for human consumption. It was interesting to find that the eating of horse meat in Christian countries was banned by Pope Gregory in the 8th century because it was seen as a pagan rite. Many countries do use the meat in their diets and it is often one of the more expensive meats to buy. We learned of stockists in the UK and also found that cookery books were available on-line. In conclusion some members would definitely eat horsemeat, some thought they might and others said a very definite "no way", so I won't be cooking a horsemeat stew for the group! It was good to welcome Tom to the meeting and hope he will be a regular member. The next meeting is on September 9th in the Parish Church Rooms at 2pm. The Topic will be "Should Scotland stay or go from the Union?" and will be led by Rosemary. Contact: Mary Earl on 01536 522456

French — Our little group continues to enjoy simple

French stories, modern teaching from CDs and occasional French bingo (no prizes!) I am not taking on more members at present unless someone drops out. Contact: Diana Ellis 01536 723380

Gardening Group — The meeting at Cedars Farm on

Sunday 29 June raised a total of just over £900 for local and rotary charities. The weather kept fair so all who went had a very interesting afternoon strolling amongst the flower borders and the woodland walks, not to mention the wine and the strawberry tea. Many thanks to all who made the afternoon such a success. Contact: Ray Bradbury 01536 516587

German-2 Conversation for Absolute Beginners—The established group for basic German Conversation remains oversubscribed so this new group for absolute beginners has been formed and is now also FULL. This group meets on Wednesdays 1.30 to 3.00pm fortnightly. Contact: Joe Fletcher 01536 722 399

Golf — We still meet every Friday afternoon with 2 T

Times booked for 1.50 and 2.00 pm at Pytchley Golf Club. There’s usually 7 of us meet up and new members are always welcome so ring for further details. We’ve also made contact with Northampton U3A Golf Section and several of us are playing in their Annual" Clive’s Day" Competition which is in memory of one of their past members who died from Cancer. If our numbers increased then we could also arrange our own competitions. At present we comprise of 2 ladies and 5 men and our abilities vary so do not be put off by what you consider your own standard, come along and see how you compare, you maybe surprised ! Italian Classes — One Italian class is running. If there is anyone else interested please contact: John Sellick 01536 517 878 [email protected]

Heartbeat— By the time this edition of the

newsletter is published, we will have enjoyed the July outing. The next Heartbeat meeting will be Monday 6th October 2014. I have not yet arranged a venue, but it will be the usual 30 minutes brisk exercise and chat. Are there any gentlemen members interested in improving their stamina? We seem to be ladies only!

Contact: Bridget Ling 01536 414810

Lunch Club — Thank you to Rosemary for hosting the

lunch for our June gathering at which we all enjoyed good food and company. That is all but one (who shall remain nameless, but she knows who she is ???) who was quite put out when she couldn't find the Asparagus on her Chicken and Asparagus meal, only to be told by Chef it was just the name of the sauce over the chicken. She made such a fuss and half an hour later we were still laughing about it. However she still enjoyed her lunch. As a result of the questionnaire we agreed we would visit venues providing food other than English. Lee Garden in the Horsemarket was suggested for a future visit although I am not sure how we would be able to park our cars in the area other than the local car park. Anyone interested in organising it or ideas of other venues please let me know. July lunch will be organised by Maggi McGuire and Sue Hart and will be at the Overstone Arms Pytchley on 22

nd July the cost is £12.50 including tea or coffee.

There will be no lunch date in August; we will have a summer break and we will resume again in September for a new season. Looking forward to September our hosts will be Helen McAdams and Jean Hazard who have booked the Lamb at Little Harrowden. Details will be in the August Newsletter. New Members - We visit a different venue each month on the fourth Tuesday of the month. A menu is provided at the U3A meeting the week prior for you to make a choice and payment is not required until the day. New members are very welcome to join us, we are a very friendly bunch. See our Lunch Club table at the meeting. Contact: Glynis Hall 01536 516249 or [email protected]

Knit and Natter - We have great fun at our meetings

with all sorts of subjects being discussed and embarrassing moments being laughed at.

This is a picture of a few of the items knitted over the last few weeks. The blankets are going to Tanzania and we are going to have a table with some of the pieces for sale, any monies going to Crazy Hats. If anyone has any spare wool we could have, please give me a ring and I will collect it. Thank you. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523867

Looking at Churches — In June we went to St. Peter’s church in East Carlton. The church was mainly funded by the Palmer family, who had it practically rebuilt in 1788. The hall in East Carlton park belonged to the Palmer family until it was sold to Stewart & Lloyds steel company. The most noticeable thing as you enter is that all the pews are enclosed by a gate. Families had their own pew in earlier times. We sat in the Palmer chapel to hear the history, surrounded by memorials all over the walls & floor, all to the Palmer family. The most striking one was of 2 standing figures. These were to Geoffrey & Margaret Palmer. Geoffrey was The Attorney General to King Charles 2nd. There are some beautiful stained glass windows in the church. Some of us managed to climb up a very narrow , dark spiral staircase to see the workings of the clock in the tower. These were kept in a huge cupboard & really fascinating to watch. Then further up we went to see the bells, although these are in quite a fragile state now, & are not rung very often. Our next visit is TOMORROW Wed. July 16th at 2.0pm. to DEENE PARK church, which is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust as it is only used by the Brudenhall family, who own Deene Hall. They use it on special occasions, such as weddings & funerals. On August 20th it will be Lamport church, which has associations with the Isham family at Lamport Hall. If we wish to go to the Hall for a cup of tea, they will cater for us at the teashop, as long as they know how many we will be, so please let me know if you wish to do that. Also we are able to park in Lamport Hall grounds.

Musical Circles 2 — Unfortunately the May meeting

had to be cancelled the next one is the 16th July Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925

Musical Circles 1 — No particular theme to the June meeting although many of the pieces had a summery feel. The range was large from Delius, Donizetti, Neruda and Lebrun through to Smetana. Schumann and Saint-Saens. Each member had a piece of music dedicated to them. For the Opera buff there was The Triumphal March from Aida by Verdi. For the pianist in the group was The Raindrop Prelude by Chopin, Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite was for Jean, Vivaldi's Allegro from a Mandolin Concerto was for Rachel and I spoiled myself with Mozart's beautiful Piano Concerto No 21. One member was unable to attend but she might well have had bagpipes! A relaxing afternoon was enjoyed by all. The next meeting is on July 21st at 53 St. Mary's Road. Photography Group — Our July meeting will not have

taken place in time for this newsletter. As always, our intention is to meet outdoors at a suitable photogenic venue, in this case the village of Sudborough. Two of our keen photographers have unfortunately left the Kettering U3A, which means that we can now accommodate two more regular members to this group. If you are interested in joining have a word or e-mail me. Our philosophy is to get out there and take photos, and let the technical problems arise naturally rather than being taught formally in a “classroom”. We also do not publish a programme because the venues and activities are planned meeting by meeting. We usually meet on the first Monday of the month in the afternoon but that is always negotiable - we like to keep things very informal. Photos taken by this group can be seen on the group’s page of the Kettering U3A website. Contact: Trevor Rudkin 01536 711976 or

Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have now managed to acquire a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students We are now at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, having completed two years of study, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish. Safe Driving —

New assessment to help older drivers The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is launching its Mature Driver’s Assessment – a way for older drivers to gain a trusted second opinion on their driving and is available for motorists aged over 70. It consists of a 60 minute driving assessment that includes advice on what action to take.

The assessment is not a formal test - it is a 60-minute drive with an IAM-approved assessor. Candidates drive in their own vehicle taking routes that they are familiar with. At the end of the assessment, they are given immediate feedback and a confidential written report. A certificate is given to those judged ‘Excellent’ or ‘Competent’ or there is advice that their driving needs to improve and what needs to be done about it.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “This assessment helps keep older people driving for as long as it is safe to do so. It’s worth remembering that many older people actually give up too early, simply because they lack confidence. It also gives elderly drivers and their families the information they need so that they can choose the right time to give up driving.”

In March this year, IAM research showed that 42 forty-two per cent of the population is worried about an elderly relative driving, yet they are unlikely to do anything about it. Motorways are the safest roads in the country, but they cause anxiety for many people. The Northampton Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists are offering to help you to overcome your concerns – and it’s FREE! They are holding a ‘Motorway Day’ at Police Headquarters, Mere Way, Northampton on Sunday 27 July 2014 and will help you to confidently deal with all aspects of motorway driving. They will accompany you in your own car for one-to-one guidance and will arrange a demonstration drive. Appointment slots on that day are available from 10am until 2.30pm. To book a slot please ring Ian Phillips on 07967 651820. If you’d like help with any driving related issues or to find out more about the Safe Driving Group, please contact either Steve or Roy. It was an excellent play which did not fail to entertain the members who watched this very funny but chilling play by Alan Ayckbourn. Review for “Bugle Boy” at the Lighthouse. Please note if you are able to offer lifts to others please ensure appropriate car insurances are in place. It would be expected that members accepting lifts would contribute towards petrol costs. It may be easier for the car driver to pick up passengers at a central pick-up point i.e. the Corn Market Hal in Kettering as opposed a "taxi" service of door to door. Writers Group — Are you someone with an idea for

a story, a poem, an article, an essay, even a play that you've been dying to get down on paper, but have never got round to it? Or have you something that you've already written and would like to share! Why not come along to our friendly group? All you need is a love of words and a sense of humour; you'll find lots of positive encouragement and advice as well as a cuppa. (There is a small levy towards the hire of the room.) We usually meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 1.45pm to 3.45pm in the Parish Rooms in Kettering. For those who like a suggestion to work to - or ignore - contact: Mary Wildman. Please note August's meeting (Aug 5

th at 1.45pm) will be at

36 Skeffington Close, Geddington as the Parish Rooms will not be available.

I am delighted to report that the Group continues to go from strength to strength. Although we have had to say – I hope a temporary – goodbye to Elaine Medcalf, who has work commitments, we welcomed this month three new members: Tom Piercy, Jo McAtackney and her friend Sue Tatman. I am particularly pleased that through the excellent diversity of the pieces brought along we were able to show our newcomers a fair range of the subjects, styles and genres our members tackle. The standard is undoubtedly high but not beyond reach nor “highbrow”. We all started with an idea and a blank sheet of paper and now continue to amaze ourselves while encouraging, and entertaining, each other. Best of all, we keep learning – the sky’s the limit.

For those who like to think ahead or mull over ideas here are a few suggestions for the coming months: Desert Island Choices: choose 10 items for your desert island. They don’t have to be CDs, Books or luxuries – they can be a mixture – but must not be an aid to escaping, so no grand pianos to saw off the legs and use as a raft for example.

A publisher’s blurb, or a book review, for Caesar’s Gallic Wars, or Hamlet, or Paradise Lost or something equally unlikely, as if the book were being published for the first time.

A report eg for the local paper of the council debate on the planning application of the Parthenon, Circus Maximus, Stonehenge or some other site in antiquity.

A speech for the defence at the trial of eg Fagin, Long John Silver, The Wolf, or some other fictional baddie. (Get him/her off, if you can.) OR an account of the trial of the above. Or anything at all! Contact: Mary Wildman 01536 741222 [email protected]

Watercolour Painting— The new Autumn Term will

begin on Thursday, 11th September, 2014 in the Parish Church Rooms (next to St. Peter & Paul Church), Kettering, and will be from 2pm to 4pm. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. We shall look forward to having Michael McGuire as our teacher. Please get in touch with either Barbara or Jo if you would like to join us. We shall be pleased to see you whether you are an experienced painter or just a beginner, all are welcome. Contacts: Barbara Goodall 01536 523 259 Jo Beaver 01933 224 474

FIRST WORLD WAR GROUP - NORTHAMPTON U3A This project was started in 2011 by the group as a way of commemorating the anniversary of the start of the First World War in August 2014. After looking at various projects it was decided to write a biography of each of the men and one woman buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Section in Towcester Road Cemetery, Northampton. The book is priced at

£9.99 and is available from Waterstones in Abington Street and Northampton Museum.
