The Chennai region is set to become one ofthe world's largest automobilemanufacturing centres over the next

decade with a total capacity of 2.2 millionvehicles per annum. Apollo Tyres recently openedits latest factory in the area, joining majorinvestments from companies including Michelin,JK Tyres, MRF and ATC. The total productioncapacity for tyre manufacturing in the area is setto exceed 1,600 metric tonnes per day, making itthe largest tyre manufacturing centre in Indiaand one of the largest in the world.

Further evidence of the rapid technical developmentof the domestic tyre market has come with two recent

announcements by Goodyear India. The leadingmanufacturer has confirmed the launch of itsAssurance Fuel Max tyre designed to improve fuelconsumption without compromising on mileage orperformance. It has also launched an 18 month trialinto use of its truck and bus radial range in India, priorto a full market launch scheduled for 2013.

Moves towards radialisation will also contribute toimprovements in road safety, an area where Indiarecorded the highest road accident death statistics ofany country in 2009.
