Causes for Revolution• Tax system was especially burdensome on the

poor

• Poor demanded more political democracy in which they could participate in making policies

• Riots and movements broke out

• Proclamation of 1763: British did not allow colonists to settle beyond Appalachians

• Stamp Act of 1765: British were taxing colonial population to pay for Seven Years’ War

• As a result: Colonists revolted by destroying the homes of the rich elite

• Stamp Act repealed due to overwhelming resistance

Events to Revolution• Boston Massacre: British soldiers killed five

colonists who were protesting the British soldiers taking their jobs

• As a result: It was a culmination of tensions leading to Revolutionary War

Events to Revolution• Boston Tea Party: In opposotion to the Tea Act,

a group of colonists disguised as Indians, attacked merchant ships on Boston Harbor

• As a result: British retaliated by closing the port

• Lexington and Concord: Military clash between Minutemen and British troops, which led to separation of Continental Congress

• As a result: Small committee was formed, and Declaration of Independence was proclaimed

• American Revolution was a work of genius

•With the Declaration, the Founding Fathers created the most effective system of national control, and managed to combine paternalism with command

• There they saw the rich could avoid the draft by paying for substitutes, while the poor had to serve

• Omitting Indians, black slaves, and women

• Only giving rights to privileged males

• Tyranny clearly still existed
