What are typhoons ?

A typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone that develops in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean between 180° and 100°E. This region is referred to as the northwest Pacific basin.

Identical phenomena in the eastern north Pacific are called hurricanes, with tropical cyclones moving into the western Pacific re-designated as typhoons.

PHILIPPINES – Typhoon NesatSeptember 2011 MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Typhoon Nesat, packing winds of up to 100 mph,

made landfall before dawn Tuesday in northeastern Luzon, the Philippines’

largest island, leaving a trail of flooding and devastation in its wake. The violent

storm later lost strength and moved out to sea, heading toward southern China.

Forecasters sounded alarms over a new storm headed for the Philippines

Wednesday, even as workers repaired seawalls demolished by a typhoon that

killed at least 43 people, 35 people missing and left scores stranded in swamped

communities.

Residents wade through chest-deep floodwaters after massive flooding north of

Manila. The heavy rains from typhoon Nesat that battered the northeastern

Philippines earlier this week filled up dams and prompted officials to release

water overnight
