TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, May 30th Matthew 28:16-20

“The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, ‘All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.’” “In today’s Gospel passage we are reminded that the disciples are still struggling to accept the miracle of the Resurrection. Jesus does not express disappointment or criticism. He gives them the “Great Commission” – to go to every nation, baptizing, teaching, and making disciples. Doubt is natural and can always be overcome. The apostles may have felt abandoned, but now Jesus assures them of his presence always.”

Continued from last Sunday’s bulletin. . . In listening to Linda’s heartbeat, Julie discovered something irregular. The resident who was supervising her confirmed the irregularity and asked Julie to sit by Linda for the duration of her on call shift, and to watch her heart rhythms on the bedside monitor.

As she sat down in front of the monitor, Julie gently held Linda’s hand. She told Linda that she would be right there just in case she needed her for anything. Linda lay back and was calm.

Less than two minutes went by when Linda appeared agitated and called out,

‘Julie.’

‘Yes, Linda. I’m right here. What do you need?’

‘Just practicing,’ Linda said and lay back peacefully.

Another two minutes went by.

‘Julie.’

‘Yes, Linda.’

‘Just practicing.’

And another.

‘Julie.’

‘Yes, Linda.’

‘Just practicing.’

Her interior world being filled with terror, Linda needed to constantly call out to reassure herself that Julie was there. This cycle of calling out and reassurance went for hours, until Linda was moved from the chaos of the ER and admitted to a room on the elder care unit.

So, how is this relevant to our faith?

Please see next Sunday’s bulletin for the continuation of “Just Practicing.”

The Church and Academy Offices will be CLOSED on

Monday, May 31st in observance of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a time to remember our fallen, a somber reminder of the brave sacrifice of men and women who risked their lives and died in service of our country.

God of power and mercy, You destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called Your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Feast Day: Monday, May 31st

This feast commemorates the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. The story of this joyous event can be found in Luke’s gospel. Elizabeth declares that Mary and her child are blessed. Mary’s response to this is the Magnificat, also known as “The Song of Mary,” her hymn of praise to God.

The Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor upon his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.

“The Church Exists to Evangelize

In the Creed, immediately after professing our faith in the Holy Spirit, we say, ‘I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.’ There is a profound connection between these two realities of faith: indeed, it is the Holy Spirit who gives life to the Church, who guides her steps. Without the constant presence and action of the Holy Spirit, the Church could not live and could not carry out the task that the Risen Jesus entrusted to her: to go and make disciples of all nations (cf. Matthew 28:19). Evangelizing is the Church’s mission. It is not the mission of only a few, but it is mine, yours, and our mission. We must all be evangelizers, especially with our life!” SOURCE: Pope Francis Speaks to Our Hearts: Words of Challenge and Hope. Frederick: The Word Among Us Press, 2013. Print.

What is Trinity Sunday? How is the date determined?

This weekend we celebrate Trinity Sunday, a moveable feast celebrating the Holy Trinity, the Christian belief that God is Three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and yet One God. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity falls one week after Pentecost Sunday. The date of Pentecost Sunday depends on the date of Easter, which changes every year, therefore, Trinity Sunday falls on a different date each year too. The earliest date it can fall is May 17; the latest is June 20.

The Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the "hierarchy of the truths of faith.” The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men "and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.”

Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church #234

Grant to us, O Lord, this day to walk with you as Father,

to trust in you as Savior, to be enlightened by you as Spirit,

to worship you as Lord; that all our works may praise you and our lives may give you glory.

Amen.

We’re reading . . .

A Mercy by Toni Morrison

A national best seller, deemed “one of Morrison’s most haunting works” by the New York Times, A Mercy reveals what lies beneath the surface of slavery. But at its heart, liked Beloved, it is the story of a mother and a daughter—a mother who casts off her daughter in order to save her, and a daughter who may never exorcise that abandonment.

In the 1680s the slave trade in the Americas is still in its infancy. Jacob Vaark is an Anglo-Dutch trader and adventurer, with a small holding in the harsh North. Despite his distaste for dealing in “flesh,” he takes a small slave girl in part payment for a bad debt from a plantation owner in Catholic Maryland. This if Florens, who can read and write and might be useful on his farm. Rejected by her mother, Florens looks for love, first from Lina, an older servant woman at her new master’s house, and later from the handsome blacksmith, an African, never enslaved, who comes riding into their lives. A Message From The Principal

Dear OLMC Community,

During the past year and a half we have been working hard on the re-accreditation process for our school through the Middle States Association (MSA). The MSA is a worldwide leader in accreditation and school improvement. For over 25 years, Middle States has been helping school leaders establish and reach their goals, develop strategic plans, promote staff development and advance student achievement.

The process began with a self-study that required input from a coalition of school leaders, teachers, parents, various stakeholders, and students. Following the submission of our self-study, a team of volunteer educators from Middle States accredited schools conducted a three-day virtual visit of our school to observe school operations and interview various stakeholders. The Visiting Team then made their recommendation to Middle States where we will then undergo a multilevel review by some of the best educators in the field before getting final approval.

I am happy to announce that the MSA Visiting Team is recommending full re-accreditation of the Academy of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

I want to personally thank everyone who helped with this process. I am so fortunate to have great people working alongside me. Our community came together and showed the Visiting Team that we are indeed proud to say . . . We Are Mount Carmel!!! Go Warriors!!!!

“Being a catechist is not a title;

it is an attitude of abiding with Him, and it lasts a lifetime!

It means abiding in the Lord’s presence and letting ourselves

be led by Him.”

– Pope Francis

Many thanks to our catechists who volunteered in the Religious Education and Sacrament Preparation programs this school year. Your dedication during this challenging school year is most appreciated. Thank you for sharing your time and faith with the young people of our parish. We hope you will join us again in September!

What is RCIA? Is RCIA for You?

The Catholic Church welcomes into the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process of preparation persons who have never been baptized, those already baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation. The celebration of Christian initiation takes place at the Easter Vigil liturgy. If you or someone you know has been thinking about becoming a member, but would first like information about the process, please call Sr. Regina at 201-871-4662.

What Parents Should Expect From A Religious Education Program

According to an information estimate by the National Catholic Education Association, somewhere between eighty and ninety percent of Catholic children now receive religious education in parish religious education programs. What should a parent expect from a religious education program?

Here are six: • A professional educational director • Well-prepared catechists • Well-balanced curriculum • A parish liturgy that teaches and inspires • Help in preparing children for sacraments • An introduction to Scripture
