COLFAX

Page 2: Type Specimen

Colfax: The nearly geometric sans serif.

Colfax is a refined oval sans serif of 20th century origins and 21st century sensibilities.

Influences ranging from the gruff Aurora Grotesk series to the elegant Neuzeit are paired with a subtle geometry and typographic utility to inform this family of sans serifs.

The Minimalist

True to its minimalist roots, Colfax has just one alternate: the upper-case J. Found as an OpenType Sty-listic Alternate, its horizontal cross bar at cap height makes it ideal for double J headlines like JOJOBA, JUJITSU or JUJUBEE.

Although so-called true italics are often paired success-fully with sans serif designs, they simply didn’t match Colfax. Oblique, adjusted italics were drawn instead to match the starkness and gravity of the roman.

G b 05The conventionally round or semi-oval characters of Colfax are comprised of subtle straight sides and near perfect circles. We think of this as implied geometry. It isn’t measured or automat-ically repeated for all characters but instead referenced throughout the typeface creating a pleasant, family-wide gestalt.

Two Americans, astronauts of Apollo 11, steered their fragile four-legged lunar module safely and smoothly to the historic landing yesterday at 4:17:40 P.M., Eastern daylight time. Neil A. Armstrong, the 38-year-old civilian commander, radioed to earth and the mission control room here: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."The first men to reach the moon—Mr. Armstrong and his co-pilot, Col. Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. of the Air Force—brought their ship to rest on a level, rock-strewn plain near the southwestern shore of the arid Sea of Tranquility. And people back on earth found the black-and-white television pictures of the bug- shaped lunar module and the men tramping about it so sharp and clear as to seem unreal, more like a toy and toy-like figures than human beings on the most daring and far- reaching expedition thus far undertaken.
