On some beaches, children might dig up ashell,or an old shoe, but on Table View be-achfront, children dig up buildings.Every once in a while, the once forgotten
buried cement structure reminds one of theunrelenting process of time.People don’t even need to go looking for it.When the mercurial wind howls, and the
dune feels generous, then the roof of the ce-ment structure makes a reappearance. Many years ago these toilets on Table
View beach front used to be above the sand.“That is old news,” says ward councillor
Heather Brenner.“The sand movement eventually got the
better of everything and has completely co-vered the toilets. To try to rescue it is not de-sirable from an environmental point ofview,” said Brenner. She says the City of Cape Town and envi-
ronmentalists are fighting for the preserva-tion of the beach front.“Man has already interfered with the na-
tural dune dynamics, because of the narrow-ness of the beach and the hard structures ne-ar it. What we have to decide is what is thebest approach to minimise the impact.”A few years ago the City’s Ian Neilson ma-
de a few road proposals in the “area of consi-deration”, which include Otto du PlessisDrive, Beach Boulevard and Coral Road. These proposals would lead to a reconfigu-
ration of the Table View beachfront.“Everyone was really excited about this,
since itwould give the beachmorewidth.Wehaven’t forgotten about this proposal. Infact, just last year in November there was abig public meeting about it,” she continues. The reason why it has not yet been imple-
mented is the same reason why the buriedbuilding has not been removed yet.“One needs to try to keep the dune dyna-
mics intact,” said Brenner.

Some local residents might have noticed aswathe of large trees being cut downnear thecorner of the R27 and Melkbosstrand Roadthis week. One resident, who wishes to stay anony-
mous, even went as far as saying that hewould pursue thematter “to the nth degree”.“I am extremely unhappy about the des-
truction of the trees. Trees as far as 90metersaway from the road have been cut, so the sto-ry that thiswas done to prevent branches fal-ling on the road doesn’t wash,” he says.He approached the ratepayers’ association
and ward councillor Nora Grose.Grose said the property owner was within
his rights to cut the trees downas long as the-se didn’t hold any significant historical va-lue.“We can’t stop the owner unless the trees
are being protected. The complainantwas al-so very worried about the mess being made, but we investigate whether any damage wasdone to the fencing and so forth,” saysGrose.

If the constitution cannot be amendedthen I feel that the name ‘Community’Police Forum ismisleading as the con-stitution only makes provision forSouth African citizens to have a saywithin the CPF organisation.“I personally feel that either the con-
stitution needs to be amended or thename of the organisation needs to bechanged and the word ‘community’ bedroppedwith immediate effect,” conti-nues Jarrett. However, all is not lost for Jarrett or
the community of sector 1.Van denBerg explains: “In a final at-
tempt at resolving the issue, I haveagain pleaded with province to re-ta-ble the motion and reconsider theirstance. In my motivation I includeBarrie’s resignation and opinion onthe matter, and I gave a heartfelt bac-king.”The Provincial Community Police
Board chairperson, Muraad Tajoo-dien, could not be reached for com-ment at the time of going to print.

Bloubergrant received R15 000 for the pur-pose of teaching and learning support mate-rial.“No outstanding results come without
hard work,” said Western Cape educationminister Debbie Schäfer at the award cere-mony. “Iwould like to thankall the teachers, principals, district officials and supportteams for their hard work and commitmentto education in the Western Cape,” saidSchäfer. This is the third year in a row that Park-
lands College was acknowledged as one ofthe Top 20 schools in the province.“The criteria used for placing on this mer-
it list are the pass rate, the percentage Bach-elor Degree (BD) passes and the percentagemathematics passes. It is indeed an incredi-ble achievement to be singled out fromaround 400 secondary schools in the West-ernCape,” saidParklands’ SecondaryFacul-ty’s principal, Sylvia Steyn. They have maintained a 100% pass rate
since the school’s first matric class in 2000.“All of our 2014 matrics passed with entry
to tertiary studies (80 with entry to BD and
six with entry to Diploma Studies). Ural Jo-nathan Alp, who achieved 10 distinctionsoverall, also achieved in the national top 1%in Advanced Programme Mathematics. Weare most proud of the class of 2014, who be-tween them achieved 181 subject distinc-tions. Thirteen learners achieved an aggre-gate of 80% or more,” said Steyn. The head master at Bloubergrant, Denver
Walbrugh, is also overjoyed at the school’simproving results. The greatest increase in Bachelor passes
category is judged by comparing resultsfrom 2012 to 2014. The criteria also includeconsistency in thenumberofGrade 12 candi-dates over the three year period.Bloubergrant’s percentage of Bachelor
passes increased by over 20%. The school al-so achieved a 97.2% pass rate.“Iwas very surprisedwhen I got the phone
call,” says Walbrugh, who attributes theaward to “hard work and commitment bythe educators”.“I also think it comes down to the learner
making the right subject choices. The par-ents should listen to the educators when itcomes to this.”Walbrugh says the schoolwill now aim for
a 80 to 90% Bachelor pass for 2015/2016.Schäfer concluded her keynote address at
the awards by giving all the learners valua-ble advice.“There is only one place where success
comesbeforework, and that is in the diction-ary. Work hard, learn from your mistakes, never lose your integrity, and never give up.Also, be careful how you measure success –work out what is important to you, and donot compromise on it. And most important-ly, be modest.”

The construction of a clubhouse, which ispart of the redesign of urban space in thenorthern sports precinct ofDunoon, is at anadvanced stage. It is expected that this phase of theproject
will be completed before the end of the cur-rent financial year. The City of Cape Townwill then look at ways to connect the north-ern sports facility with the community hallthrough a more direct route.A feasibility study for the development of
an innovation and learning hub as part ofthis development is currently underway.Dunoon’s location, characterised by a
main transport route and access to job op-portunities, makes it a popular area. It isclose to Killarney Business Park, the adja-cent farms, Parklands and Montague Gar-dens, which offer job opportunities. It is also situated on a main transport
route and serviced by the MyCiTi feederand trunk buses which connect this bus-tlingareawith the central city and thenear-by towns. This urban space project is linked to the
local area planning initiative which hasbeen designated as a World Design Capital2014 project because it is changing lives
through design.“The planning and design phase for the
northern sport facility started in 2011 andthe first phase of construction began in2012. This project has shown that progressis possiblewhendesignandcommunity col-laboration come together,” saysCitymaycomember for energy, environmental andspatial planning, Johan van der Merwe.“Various political parties, private firms
and the community have partnered withthe City to ensure that a holistic and inclu-sive approach has been taken with the de-sign and construction of this space. By cre-ating inclusive spaces,weareunlockingop-portunities for vulnerable communitiesand enabling redress through increased in-vestment, heightened awareness, and com-mitted collaboration,” says van derMerwe. The main components include drainage
to the sports fields, a skateable forecourt,a climbing wall and a slide, the construc-tion of a retention pond, spectator seating, hard and soft landscaping, an informal bas-ketball or netball tree, mixed-use hardcourts, amixed-use synthetic surface court,a spray park and a changing room, officefacility and clubhouse.

Under the auspices of the Friends of Blaauw-berg Conservation Area (FoBCA), walks foryouth to count Oystercatchers take place
every second Saturday throughout the sum-mer months. The last of the twoDecemberOystercatcher
Count (OCC) walks along Blouberg Beachyielded not only sightings of new oyster-catcher chicks, but also somenew eggs anda seal pup.Despite the high spring tides having rea-
ched right into the vegetation fringes in so-me places, it’s thought that no eggs had
been washed from their nests. The seal pup would likely have been one
of several which annually at around this ti-me of year make their way across to Blou-berg Beach fromRobben Island and other is-lands in the area. The Table View comunity police forum(CPF) has for the last two years arrangedmonthly clean ups of green belts and parksin the Table View area. This year they are planning to go all out,
and invite the community to get more in-volved.These clean ups, of which the next one
is on 24 January, consists of like-mindedcommunity members getting together on aSaturday morning, splitting into groupsand walking green belts, streets and parks, collecting rubbish.Apart from the actual clean ups, awaren-
ess is also created to bring “the brokenwin-dow concept” to the attention of the entirecommunity. These clean ups follow the “broken win-
dow guidelines” to paint over graffiti im-mediately, to collect rubbish immediatelyand to remove rubble as soon as it appears.By doing this it removes the temptation
for others to contribute to the mess.It also creates a better impression of the
area, aswell as improving property values. This year, the CPF has the support from
several schools and churches, and are ho-ping to involve more as they go along.Arrangements are being made to issue
community service certificates to scholars,in exchange for hours spent on the cleanups. These certificates will be presented to
school principals to hand over to their stu-dents periodically. The following dates have been earmar-
ked for this CPF initiative: 24 January, 21February, 14March, 18April, 16May, 20 Ju-ne, 21 July, 22 August, 19 September, 24 Oc-tober, 21 November and 5 December.The clean up on 24 January will begin at
07:30 for 08:00 by meeting in the parkingarea of Parklands police inParklandsMainRoad.Bring gloves, refuse bags, old braai tongs
(for picking up the less than desireableitems), sun block, water, a smile, a fewfriends, your family and neighbours.Hours arenot set andany residentmay joinfor as long as they are able to.Clean ups offer great exercise and the
perfect opportunity to meet your neigh-bours.If you have a bakkie or trailer available
for the day, contact with Hendrik du Ples-sis on 084 405 0404 or [email protected].

The City of Cape Town’s naming commit-tee has recently recommended that TableBay Boulevard be renamed after formerpresident FW de Klerk. The proposed renaming of Table Bay
Boulevard in honour of former presidentFW de Klerk received overwhelming sup-port during a comprehensive and city-widepublic participation process. This process took place over a 30-day pe-
riod from 1 to 31 October last year, duringwhich residents, role players, interestedparties andcommunity organisationswereinvited to air their views.“We are encouraged by the number of re-
sidents who participated in the public con-sultation process. Although the public con-sultation process is not a referendum andtherefore not about numbers, we do notethat the overwhelming majority of thosewho participated supported the renamingproposal. The naming committee has nowrecommended to the executive mayor andcouncil that Table Bay Boulevard be rena-med FW de Klerk Boulevard. Ultimately itis the council that is responsible for the fi-nal decision,’ says the chairperson of theCity’s naming committee, Brett Herron.

An independent survey has recognised theCity’s MyCiTi bus network as a leader in thefield of African public transport systems.
The Siemens African Green City Index re-fers to the investment in the MyCiTi Bus Ra-pidTransport (BRT)networkbeing rolled outto historically under-served areas in the me-tro. As a result, Cape Town is among the topcities in the index for the length of superiorforms of transport such as BRT lines.
The public transport system measures 0,11km per square kilometre, compared with theindex average of 0,07 km.
The continued expansion of this networkis crucial to empower previously disadvanta-ged communities and ease the pressurebrought by rapid urban development.
The report specifically mentions the histo-rically underserved West Coast region, theprevalence ofminibus-taxis andprivate vehi-cles, and the poorly maintained rail system.
It is these challenges that led theCity to im-plement the service first in theWest Coast re-gion first, particularly to Dunoon and Atlan-tis. The expansion of the service to the MetroSouth-East is also a necessary development.

City Health is lobbying for legislative clari-ty on “hubbly bubblies”.
Increasingly, research findings point tovery real dangers associated with the popu-lar hookah pipes, prompting City Health toseek legislative clarity – especially in lightof Cape Town’s ongoing battle with respira-tory diseases.
The City will therefore escalate its effortsthis year for legislative clarity on the widearray of “alternative” smoking devices andhabits that have become commonplace inSouth Africa.
Along with e-cigarettes, hookah pipescontinue to be a grey area, not only in SouthAfrica but around the globe, and is current-ly not provided for in the Tobacco ControlAmendment Act.
Ongoing research into hookah pipes (orhubbly bubblies as the devices are com-monly known) indicates that they are deci-dedly more dangerous than societal attitu-des suggest.
The most recent study in the United Sta-tes of America found that 39% of teens andyoung adults who had previously smokedhookah pipes went on to smoke cigarettes.
“Hookah pipes are very popular in CapeTown, not just among adults, but also chil-dren because there is a perception that theflavoured tobacco is somehow not harmful.Tobacco is tobacco, no matter what the fla-vour.Weneed to bemoremindful as a socie-ty about the burden we’re placing on thehealthcare system. In the Cape especially,we have very high levels of TB and other
respiratory diseases and so we need tomake every effort to combat those, inclu-ding prevention through responsible perso-nal choices,” says theCity’smaycomemberfor health, Benedicta Van Minnen.

It is amazing how members ofour society, including politici-ans, and now even this pastor, will willingly give their wordand make an agreement inwriting and then later turnaround and break it (“Homeowners shut out by pastor,Tygerburger, 14 January).
He agreed in writing tovacate by 31 October, and stillremains in occupation of thepremises. He and his ilk are adisgrace to society and I cannotunderstand how he can havethe gall to represent anyreligion at all.
There was a time when ahandshake sealed an agreementand neither party would breakthat agreement. Today unscru-pulous people duck and diveand use loopholes in the law togain advantage over others. TheSquatter law was designed toassist poverty stricken homelesspeople who occupied vacantland. To give them somemeasure of rights over thepowerful landowners. It wasdesigned to stop bulldozers fromclearing people from the landwithout recourse to the courts. It is high time that the lawma-kers got their act together andchanged these squatter laws. Inaddition, some attorneys delaycourt proceedings by forgettingto appear in court, losingdocuments etc, with the objectof giving defaulting tenantsoccupation of the premises for,in some cases, many years.Paster Ugochukwo Oparacho,

LEWENSKIEKIE
School termmarks a sadday for momsA tear glistens on the mother’s cheek. It is her child’s first day in school and
the fear of the unknown grips at herheart. The father doesn’t cry, although he too
professes that it is a sad day. The idea ofhaving all this free time on his hands isdaunting (and so wonderful he can cry).He will be going back to work in a
week, so that gives him about 30 hours offreedom. The mother looks at him andgives him a reassuring hug.“We will get through this love. Our
little one is growing up so quickly!”She wipes away the tears. Why are men and women so different?
A mountain of books has been writtenabout this well-researched subject, so thisarticle will have no moments of profoundclarity. What it will do, just in time for the
start of the new school year, is emphasizehow becoming a mother changes one’soutlook forever. Most men (and yes, I am one) would
remember how devastated their wife waswhen her pregnancy leave came to anend. They would also recall how relievedthey themselves were to go to work everyday. It’s not as if they were never goingto see their child again.Author JD Salinger summed it up
when he concluded: “Mothers are allslightly insane.”He forgot to add, as one unknown
auther did: “Being a mother means thatyour heart is no longer yours; it wanderswherever your children do.”

With a little help from hersupporters, Gabi hopes to become the firstSouth African to compete in the Viva LasVegas Rockabilly Weekend internationalpin-up contest in April. For Gabbi, being a pin-up girl is about a
whole lot more than pretty clothes and po-ses.She says a modern day pin-up girl is a
combination of old-school values and thestrong will and mind of a 21st century wo-man – prim and proper with a rebelliousstreak, which she believes is also an apt de-scription of herself.Gabbi made her first foray into the world
of pin-up modelling as a form of artistic ex-pressionwhen shemoved away fromperfor-ming on stage.“The ‘cheesecake’ pin-up style of model-
ling fits my quirky and silly personalitywell,” she says.Having always led an alternative lifestyle
within the borders of being a “straight-and-narrow kinda girl”, Gabbi says pin-up mo-delling gave her a place where she felt shebelonged.Pin-up models go hand-in-hand with the
Rockabilly lifestyle, a perfect fit for the “bet-ty” who loves old-school rock ‘n roll music, fashionand the “style andclass of this by-go-ne era”.Gabbi says she “truly got into it” when
she started posing for the Milnerton-basedclothing label Miss Happ, and now she usesherposition in thepin-up community to pro-
mote the Rockabilly life-style and challenge peo-ple to “dare to be diffe-rent”.She will be attending
the Viva Las Vegas Rock-abilly Weekend as thebrand ambassador forMiss Happ who will beshowing their spring/summer range at the Vi-va Las Vegas FashionShow.Since she was going to
the festival anyway, Gabisays she entered the pin-up contest in a pure “whythe heck not” moment.“I was absolutely ama-
zed at the response andsupport I received assoon as the announce-ment of the public votewasmade on the 5 Janua-ry,” she says.In fact, she’s gained so
much support that she’sin the top six of over 100contestants.Her goal now is stay
within the top six duringthe competition’s publicvoting stage to guaranteeher spot at the Miss VivaLas Vegas Finale whichwill be hosted in Las Ve-gas on Saturday 4 April.Gabbi hopes to use the
contest to create awaren-ess for the South AfricanRockabilly “scene” andto gain exposure for local brands, bands andbusinesses.V Readers can help keep Gabbi in the running forthe contest by voting for her under the name The
Blue Haired Betty at www.vivalasvegas.net/pinupcontest. Voting closes on Saturday 31 January. Visitwww.facebook.com/thebluehairedbetty for moreinformation about Gabbi and her Rockabilly lifestyle.

Johannesburg-based singer Stanley Junedoes more than just imitate art.TygerBurger caught up with him whi-
le he was touring Cape Town recently.Stanley describes himself as an “ordinaryguy next door” who likes making music andperforming, butwhen it comes tomusic, he’san all round creative. Besides writing andperforming his own songs, he also produceshis ownmusicvideos, createshis ownalbumart, records and produces his own music.“I love the entire process of just puttingeverything together, working from the star-ting point to the finished product,” he says.Like other artists, he isn’t always happywith the endproduct, but knows that themu-sic will lose its intimacy if he keeps hamme-ring away at it.This is Stanley’s thirdCapeTown tour andhe says this trip was “exceptionally great”.Hewas at venues likeDieBoer inDurbanvil-le and the Barleycorn Music Club in Clare-mont where he played to an audience of “lis-teners” instead of a drunken crowd.“People really sat downand all their atten-tion was focused towards the stage.”He says while the Cape Town and Johan-nesburg music “scenes” have a lot in com-mon, he finds Capetoniansmore open tomu-sicians from outside the city.Stanley’s music is heavily influenced byclassic rock. “I’ve always loved the oldschool, rock ‘n roll with loud guitars andscreaming vocals.” But there’s also a softer, more dynamic side to his music. His fans range from 10-year-olds to peoplein their 60s and 70s who all enjoy his brandof rock with an “acoustic core”.Being an independent artist, Stanley says
he doesn’t have access tomainstreamstores, but despite this his debut album, ImitatingArt, whichwas released in 2013, is doingwellthrough online platforms. He is currently working on a follow up al-bum he hopes to release by year end.He says he likes to record everything hedoes and releases clips on YouTube.Stanley hopes to release at least two orthree new official music videos this year, with the help of a production company.“You are very limited to what you can dowith just a tripod,” he jokes. There is also another Cape Town tourplanned but for now fans can visitwww.stanleyjune.com or www.face-book.com/StanleyJuneMusic to stay up todate with what Stanley is up to.V Stanley June appeared on SABC 3’s Expresso showwhile he was in Cape Town.
