Heather Brenner ward councillor for Ward 107 which includes Park- lands, Sunningdale and Table View believes the vagrancy problem is di- rectly related to the recycling con- tracts that the city has awarded to certain companies. “Their contracts state that these companies have to remove 20 per- cent recyclable waste from the city’s refuse. What now happens, is that the vagrants get to the bins be- fore the recycling companies and collect the recyclable rubbish. This means the companies have to buy back their recyclable waste from the trolley brigade to make their quota,” Brenner explained. She said this also meant that the vagrants sleep over in the area to be able to raid the rubbish bins first thing in the morning. “The other problem is that they leave one hell of a mess behind,” she said. Green belts in West Beach, Parklands and the service road on the corner of Blaauwberg and Koe- berg roads are some of the areas the trolley pushers use to sort their loot. Vagrancy in Table View and sur-rounds seems to be a problemthat is not going away any timesoon.

Man dead in headon collisionLEON STEENKAMP

A man from Bothasig died afterhis Lotus sports vehicle was in-volved in a head-on collision inMelkbosstrand last week.

According to Captain Ronita vander Toorn it seems the the 49-year-

old driver of the Lotus lost controlof the vehicle before colliding witha stationary Honda Civic at a stopstreet in Otto du Plessis road onTuesday afternoon at around 12:15.

“We cannot say whether speedplayed a role in the incident,” Vander Toorn said.

According to ER24’s Andre Viss-

er paramedics found the single oc-cupant and driver of the Lotus in acritical condition when they ar-rived at the scene.

“He had sustained a severe headinjuryaswell as abrokenright leg,”Visser said.

Paramedics administered Ad-vanced Life Support treatment to

the driver before transporting himto Mediclinic Milnerton for furthercare.

The driver of the black Hondawho was also the only occupant ofthe vehicle received treatment andtransportation from the scene byanother ambulance service.

The Lotus driver died later that

evening.Police could on Monday not re-

lease his name as the body had notyet been identified by the family.

The deceased’s wife was ap-proached for comment but declinedto give any.

Van der Toorn said they are in-vestigating the accident.

Trolley deposit fee rejected. From page 1.

Our house robberies are done by peopleoutside the area and are far more organised. At the moment I have two detectives who arein the Eastern Cape to follow up stolen pro-perty of R40 000 that was identified as beingstolen here,” Vosloo said of trolley pushers’possible involvement with housebreakings.

He said police have not had any proof thatthe trolley pushers were used by syndicatesto distribute stolen goods.

Brenner said possible solutions includingthe confiscating of trolleys or having shopscharge consumers a deposit fee for trolleyuse proved futile.

“We approached Pick n Pay with the ideaof charging a trolley deposit fee in an effortto curb trolleys dissappearing from theirproperty but they weren’t interested.”

She said other shopping chains also won’tbe in favour of the idea for the sake of staying

competitive. She added that the shops also are not inte-

rested in laying charges against trolley pus-hers.

“In one exercise we confiscated 45 trolleys, but because the stores are not interested ingetting the trolleys back and therefore do notlay any criminal charges the authoritiescan’t act,” she explained.

Brenner said a proposal to amend businesslicence agreement conditions relating totrolley usage to address this problem, will beinvestigated.

The TVRA have proposed that “no go are-as” be established around all educational in-stitutions in the area in order to prevent “un-desirable situations from occuring”.

This proposal will be taken up with localgovernment to look at the amendment of cer-tain by-laws to address this issue and promo-te better policing around these areas.

MyCiTi pay card ‘the future’LEON STEENKAMP

While some commuters are still strug-gling to make peace with the new elec-tronic card payment system of the MyCi-Ti bus service the city is lauding it as theway of the future in public transport.

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral commit-tee member for transport, roads and storm-water attended a meeting of the Table ViewRatepayers’ Association last week to answersome of the burning questions.

Herron says the introduction of an auto-mated fee collection system for all publictransport services was an instruction givenby the National Department of Transport.

“The National Department of Transport is-sued a directive that all public transportmake use of the EMV (Europay, Mastercardand Visa) card system to allow for inter-oper-ability on all modes of public transport.

“The Southern Peninsula Taxi Associa-tion has also started using the Tap-I-Farecard and we have had some commuters usethis card on our buses,” Herron explainedthe one-card-fits-all approach.

He said all new automated fair collectionsystems put into place after June 2011 hadto make use of the EMV system.

“Existing systems must become compliantin making use of the EMV by June 2016.”This will include the Gautrain in Johannes-burg.

He said although many of the public arenot happy with a bank benefiting from the

electronic system, the partnership with abank is part and parcel of the system.

“The tender for the system was awardedto ICT-Works who needed a banking partnerand they decided on Absa. In Durban’seThekwini Municipality the service provid-er there is in partnership with StandardBank,” Herron explained.

The myconnect card will also act as a debitcard with the functionality of making pur-chases of under R200 at supported merchantsin the future.

He added that those who were opposed toinvesting in the myconnect card as an addi-tional debit card could soon choose to ac-quire a similar card from their bank ofchoice as many SA banks are in the processof developing their own cards.

The myconnect system replaced the paperticket system on 28 January. As of 27 Janu-ary 13 532 people have bought myconnectcards.

“We had expected to sell about 7 000 cards,as this is the approximate number of regularpassengers. The number of 13 532 cards soldis 100 percent more than we expected, whichis very encouraging. It shows that the systemhas been successfully adopted and imple-mented,” said Herron.

In answer to questions regarding the effi-ciency, economy and job creation possibili-ties of the paper ticket system, Herron saidthis system was always meant to be tempo-rary.

“The paper ticket system was always atemporary measure to allow the city to

launch the MyCiTi service. Rather than de-lay the launch of the MyCiTi services, the in-terim paper-ticket system was devised to al-low people to ride the buses while the mycon-nect card system was finalised and tested toensure that it is implemented successfully ina phased manner.

“Myconnect has always been a key part ofthe design of a sustainable MyCiTi service, and the myconnect system is being intro-duced in phases. At the end of each phase thecity tests and measures to ensure that les-sons learnt in each phase are implementedand the systemrefined to ensure that the cus-tomer benefits. When all the phases havebeen introduced, in the not-too-distant fu-ture, the city will have catered for our vari-ous users,” he said.

When buying a myconnect card, commut-ers get two emergency tickets to use shouldthey get stuck without value on their card.

“These tickets substantially reduce theR22 activation cost.”

This R22 is also redeemable when youhand in your myconnect card at any stationprovided you have kept your receipt.

“This may be an inconvenience for somepeople, but it is a short-term inconvenience, because later this year a single-trip optionwill be available. This will benefit touristsand visitors to the city who may not want topurchase a card.”

For the irregular users of the MyCiTi serv-ice another benefit of the card is that themoney on the card does not expire, so youcan load money on the card to use any time.

Minibus taxis adopting card pay systemThe inter-usability of one automated faircollection system is already illustrated bythe introduction of a money-less card pay-ment system for minibus taxis.

The city of Cape Town has welcomed therecently introduced Tap-I-Fare card pay-ment system, a MasterCard PayPassbrought out by the taxi industry in severalprovinces across the country.

The card is similar to the myconnectcard used to pay for fares on the MyCiTibuses in Cape Town.

“We welcome the introduction of theTap-I-Fare card. This is in line with the vi-sion of the city, and the National Depart-

ment of Transport, to create an inter-con-nected national public transport systemwith a single payment method, that is in-teroperable, making the lives of commut-ers simpler and more convenient. Passen-gers are already using their Tap-I-Farecards on the MyCiTi buses, and the my-connect cards are able to be used on mini-bus taxis that have validators installed inthem, ” saidCouncillorBrettHerron,may-oral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater.

The Tap-I-Fare card is available fromdesignated retail points (for example atthe taxi rank in town and in the Water-

front complex) where passengers can buythe smartcard and load money onto it withcash.

“We at Tap-I-Fare are very excited to bepart of this initiative in Cape Town, andwith the support from the local minibustaxi industry we intend to expand beyondthe V&A route soon,” said managing di-rector of Tap-I-Fare Pierre Bruwer.

Next month First National Bank isscheduled to launch their own EMV com-pliant card, with Absa having alreadylaunched their own.

All these cards function as low-balancedebit cards as well.

South Africa’s most prestigious art compe-tition, Absa L’Atelier Art, is being held forthe 27th time this year.

The competition aims to recognise and re-ward the skills, talent and imagination ofyoung artists. The idea behind this year’sthem, “Art Child”, came from Dr Paul Bay-liss, Absa Art and Museum Curator.

Artists between the ages of 21 and 35 cansubmit their entries at The Arts Associationof Bellville, Library Centre, Carel van As-wegen Street. Entries can be submitted un-til 2 March. Call 021 918 2287.

Say ‘Cheese’ if spottedLEON STEENKAMP

A Parklands family is willing to grasp atwhatever straw they can find if it meansthe safe return of their adopted weaverbird.

Cheese the weaver bird, was raised by theMorgenrood family after it was found aban-doned and almost featherless at the Eden onthe Bay Shopping Centre in October lastyear.

“My sister in law spotted the little bird ly-ing on the ground. After making sure therewasn’t a mommy around, she picked it upand brought it home,” explained Wilna Mor-genrood.

“My sister has a dog and could thereforenot keep the bird.

“We already have three birds and sheasked us to look after it,” said the bird loverwho also owns a budgie, ringneck andHahn’s macaw.

Very soon Cheese became a joy in the livesof Wilna, her husband Adrian and theirnine-year-old son, Conrad.

“He is very friendly, loves to play withyour hair and your toes, and adopts anyone

in the flock very quickly,” Morgenrood said.“When we are not at home he has a room tohimself and when we are here he roamsfree,” said Morgenrood.

Last week Tuesday tragedy struck asCheese overshot the boundary wall of theMorgenrood’s house in Falcon Crescent.

“We were busy training him with the ideaof releasing him when he is older. The windtook him and he overshot the wall. We triedlooking for him but it is a big neighbour-hood,” she said.

“We think he lost his way home. He is stilla baby and will be unable to look for foodhimself sohewillmost probablygo topeople. We just hope they don’t put him in a cage,”Morgenrood explained.

Cheese is a little brown and cream birdwith yellow tipped wings.

“He has a small bold spot on his head, asharp little mouth and sings beautifully –like a canary.”

Wilna Morgenrood is appealing to anyonewho may have found Cheese to please con-tact her on 082 455 6241.

“If he has decided to adopt you, please letus know. He is a part of our family and ismissed dearly,” she said.

Conrad Morgenrood and Cheese enjoyed spending time together.

MyCiTi fixing feeder route delays in Table ViewTen new 12m MyCiTi buses willstart being deployed in CapeTown from late March, to help al-leviate severe congestion beingexperienced by customers of theMyCiTi service.

A focus area will be the suburbsof Table View and Parklands, andtraffic along Gie Road and Raats

Drive. The city is aware of extensive de-

lays being experienced in these andsurrounding areas particularlyduring peak traffic times.

The problem has been exacerbat-ed recently by roadworks for the ex-tension of the MyCiTi service onthe West Coast and an influx of newpassengers who need to travel to lo-

cal schools.“The City of Cape Town regrets

the delays being experienced byMyCiTi customers in these areas. We have already implemented con-tingency plans, and we’re investi-gating other ways of addressing thesituation and relieving the delaysas soon as possible,” said Council-lor Brett Herron, mayoral commit-

tee member for transport, roadsand stormwater.

In a longer term effort to addressdemand, new MyCiTi buses will en-ter service in March, while the fleetof 9m Optare “feeder” buses will be-gin arriving from mid-2012 and willbe introduced into the service aspart of the roll-out of the first phaseof the MyCiTi service.

In the short term, the city has ar-ranged for an extra bus to help clearanybacklogon theParklands route.Alternate routes and extra stops arebeing considered while roadworkconstruction intensifies.

“We ask the public’s patience aswe try to address the delays, and weapologise for the inconvenience ex-perienced,” Herron said.

“Children need to be taughtabout human trafficking and itsdangers at a young age.”

This is what Major MargaretStafford, national coordinator forthe Salvation Army’s anti-humantrafficking task teamhad to say re-garding recent occurrences con-

cerning human trafficking in so-me parts of South Africa.

“The abuse and exploitation ofwomen and children through anyform of human trafficking is an of-fense against humankind andagainst God.” The 24-hour toll freehotline number is 08000 73728.

Grade Rs swamp schoolThe ACVV Koeberg preschool inMelkbosstrand is bursting at theseams and desperately needs aclassroom.

The local charity organisationstarted its Grade R class last yearwith great success.

“We had 19 kids in the class ofwhich seven were deemed schoolready. Those seven are now in VanRiebeeckstrand Primary and doingreally well. The other 12 stayed be-hind and were joined by newfriends,” said the organisation’sNikki Pretorius.

“This year, our class has 38 chil-dren (so far) and it seems to increasedaily. Unfortunately we only haveone classroom and thus are forced toturn children away whoare unable to pay any-where else. This meansthey will be unable toget any form of pre-school education untilwe are able to accommo-date them,” Pretoriusexplained saying thatclasses are by law not al-lowed to accommodatemore than 35 children.

She said the closing ofanother local creche hasmade the demand evengreater.

“There are 10 chil-dren who would like tocome register with usfor this year. Theircreche closed down andthey are without anyform of daycare. What ismost disturbing is thatthese children are

meant to be attending Grade 1 nextyear, but the longer it takes for us toaccommodate them, the lower thechances that they will be schoolready.”

Pretorius said they have a quali-fied volunteer teacher and assistantwho are willing to teach a secondclass but that they are in need of aclassroom.

“We are in urgent need of funds toacquire a second classroom which islarge enough to accommodate a classof 30 kids,” she said.

Pretorius believes a wendy houseof 3,6 x 9 metres which includes a ve-randa and an insulated roof will costR46 660.

This price excludes the addition ofelectricity to the building.

She says the ideal is a 6m x 9m fi-bre cement classroom with a slidingdoor and windows. This will includetwo toilets and wash basins.

“This classroom however costsR107 000 and a bit beyond our imme-diate reach,” Pretorius said.

The ACVV will welcome any in-put, assistance, contributions or in-sights with this project.

Pretorius said all donors can be is-sued with a section 18a tax deducti-ble donation certificates as well ascertification for BEE audits.

“We are also happy to give formalrecognition in terms of media andadvertising on the building itself.”

Pretorius can be contacted on021 553 9080, 082 828 9307 or [email protected].

The Grade R class of the ACVV Koeberg in Melkbosstrand is bursting at the seams andthey are in need of an additional classroom.

Rotary thanked for PCsANDRÉ BAKKES

“Ysterplaat Junior Primary feels veryspecial and grateful towards BloubergRotary Club for donating 27 brand newcomputers and flat screen monitors to beutilised in our computer room!”

These words were spoken by BeverleyBlake, the school’s admin clerk, but theymight as well havebeen uttered by everypupil, teacher and par-ent.

The Rotary Clubmanaged to get the re-quired funds afteryears of donations andcould finally do whatkeeps them going –making a difference inother people’s lives.

The Rotary’s HelèneVisser was at the fore-front of their latest dis-tribution of goodwilland she managed to getother Rotary clubsfrom Germany, Cana-da, Australia, the Unit-ed Kingdom and theUnited States of Amer-ica to top up their ownfunds and buy compu-ter equipment to thevalue of about R120 000 for Ysterplaat JuniorPrimary.

Visser explains: “It took us two and a halfyears to raise the funds, which was especial-ly difficult due to the recession.”

This latest donation makes it 10 schoolsthey have helped with computers in 10 years.

“We helped schools such as WoodbridgePrimary and De Grendel, but I know theprincipal of Ysterplaat, Elsabé Rautenbach, and always wanted the Rotary to help them

as well. So I wrote letters to clubs all overthe world and we finally managed to raisethe required funds.

The computer room at Ysterplaat was offi-cially opened in December last year duringa function attended by Rotary members andofficials from Western Cape Education De-partment, Central District.

Rautenbach said at the time that this dona-tion will fill a void that the school would nev-

er have been able to fill.“The staff and learners of Ysterplaat Jun-

ior Primary salute the splendid efforts ofHelène Visser and her Rotary colleagues, and appreciate the difference they are mak-ing in our learners’ lives,” she concludes.

Visser urges people to join their Club ifthey want to make a difference in the livesof others.

City givescyclingsafety tipsThe City of Cape Town urges all road usersto exercise caution and common sense onthe city’s roads, especially now when agreater number of cyclists will be on theroads.

At the start of each year there are anumber of cycle races taking place in thebuild up to the Cape Argus Pick n Pay CycleTour in March.

This means that thousands of cyclists willbe in training.

“Cape Town is proud of its title as ‘CycleCity’. In everyone’s best interest, we call onall road users to share the road. There isenough space for everyone,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety andsecurity of the City of Cape Town.

“Along with the increased number of cy-clists taking to the roads, comes an unfortu-nate increase in the number of accidents in-volving cyclists.

“This is something that could be avoided,if all road users – motor vehicle drivers andcyclists – understand that they share theroad, each with their own rights and respon-sibilities,” Smith said.

“City traffic officers will be focusing onthe behaviour of both cyclists and motoristsand where the law is broken, fines will beissued.

“While traffic officers will continue tomonitor the behaviour of both cyclists andmotorists, we appeal to all road users to ex-ercise tolerance, awareness and mutual re-spect, especially during this busy cyclingseason,” Smith said.

Some ways for cyclists to stay safer onCape Town’s roads:

. Be visible. Unlike in many global citieswhere thousands of cyclists commute by bi-cycle, drivers in South Africa don’t alwaysexpect cyclists. Cyclists can help by wearinghigh-visibility clothing, flashing LED beltsand trouser-straps. Cyclists are also advisedto ride 1,5m in from the road edge.

. Obey the rules of the road: Cyclistsshould stop at stop signs and obey road sig-nage like all other road users.

. Be assertive but polite. Show other roadusers respect and they will show respect tocyclists.

. Pay attention at intersections and traf-fic circles – particularly where you are trav-elling straight onward, and the vehicles areturning left. At stop streets and traffic lights, come to a stop slightly in front of the station-ary vehicles, so that they’re unable to turnleft in front of you.

. Be predictable. Indicate where you in-tend to go – and smile. Ride often and keepup your urban riding skills, as nervous, hes-itant cyclists often endanger pedestriansand motorists.

. Ride in single file and wear a helmet –it’s against the law to ride without a helmet.

Moenie bang wees nie, Ek is by jou, moeniebekommerd wees nie, Ek is jou God. Ek ver-sterk jou, Ek help jou. Jesaja 41:10

Be extra carefulabout cyclistsMark Twain was once quoted saying: “Geta bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.”

Ask any cyclist and they will certainlybe able to confirm this over and overagain.

There is one factor specifically that iscertainly the greatest threat to bikers –motorists. Or before I generalise – somemotorists.

The Argus Cycle tour is held on 11March which means every single partici-pant is out and about on our roads, prepar-ing for the big race.

The City of Cape Town has this weekurged motorists to exercise caution andcommon sense on the roads and this issomething every motorist should take toheart.

The safety and security spokespersoncautioned that traffic officers will be fo-cusing on the behaviour of cyclists andmotorists alike and fines will be issuedwhere the law is broken.

As cyclist numbers increase this time ofyear, so do accidents involving cyclists.

Yes, it is not always the motorist that isat fault and yes, most of us have probablyhad experiences in which cyclists ingroups drove next to each other instead ofbehind each other.

Nonetheless, now is the time to be extracareful, extra patient and extra observantfor cyclists on our roads.

SLICE OF LIFESLICE OF LIFE

City sets national standardThe City of Cape Town received their eighthunqualified audit in a row. This is anachievement not to be sneered at.

Patricia de Lille, Cape Town’s executivemayor said this was achieved by a combina-tion of sound financial management, leader-ship, rigorous monitoring and open, ethicaland transparent government.

The position of a government’s audit deter-mines how well they handle their finances.

Judging from this audit, many other prov-inces can learn from the city. The City of Jo-hannesburg, for example. They received an-other qualified audit due to irregular billingprocedures and irregular expenditure.

The Mayor said such financial manage-ment allowed the city to provide services toall people of the city, but especially the poor.

Is this not something that every single gov-ernment in every single province in thiscountry should be aiming for?

And what best way to achieve that than tofollow the example of the successful?

Like De Lille said, such financial misman-

agement speaks to a deeper issue of neglect-ing the responsibility they bear when theyserve in government.

She stated that those who manage resourc-es have to do so effectively to make sure eve-ry rand they spent was towards the publicgood. She is spot on, because it is after all,the public’s money that is spent.

De Lille made it clear that supervisingpublic money means acting as responsibly aspossible so the public derives benefit fromtheir resources.

TheCity ofCapeTown’smanagement styleshould be an example to other cities andprovinces and they should use this to theirbest advantage.

That being said, De Lille also stated thatthere is always room for improvement, indi-cating a good sense of government.

If Cape Town can do it, the rest of the coun-try’s provinces can do it. So can it be donein National Government.

We should all takepride in our areasWe read with interest of the beach cleanupfrom Dolphin Beach to Bloubergstrand andthank everyone involved for trying to keepour beach clean for the enjoyment of all.

Ourvlei areaswouldbenefit fromthe samecleanups.

We go out on a regular basis with our sacksand collect all the rubbish thrown away onthe vlei behind us and also two others fairlyclose.

The variety of rubbish is fairly diverse andsometimes we are not able to remove largeritems such as TVs, armchairs, etc. althoughthese items usually disappear after a few

months. It is unfortunate that the recyclingbags get

taken and ripped and emptied onto the vleiareas.

Why people seem to think it is a dumpingground just because therearenobinswecan-not understand but how lovely it would beif others would take a bag and collect anyrubbish near to them.

It is not a lot to ask to keep our areas cleanand tidy and for us all to take pride in wherewe live.

Hockeyadmin ashameAs a hockey player I write to theCity of Cape Town in absolute frus-tration and dismay about the factthat the Hartleyvale Astro field wasnot fit and available in order to hostthe SA Hockey Final against GreatBritain on Saturday 12 Februarythis year.

Sadly the game venue was alteredat the last moment due to some redtape it seems.

The hockey was played in Stellen-bosch with a small capacity forspectators away from the generalpublic access.

International hockey was lasthosted in Cape Town in 2006 andmany thousands of hockey enthusi-asts – schoolchildren, students andadult players alike were lookingforward to see this game.

Hockey is a dynamic and growingsport in SA schools and all effortsshould be made to encourage chil-dren to play sport.

There is an official lame excuseabout some red tape involved aboutguaranteeing the spectators’ safetyat Hartleyvale. An internationalgame was held at Hartleyvale Astronine days ago with allegedly some3 000 spectators.

I personally played hockey atHartleyvale Astro on Wednesdaythree days ago and there was no ap-parent danger to anyone.

City of Cape Town, I believe knewof this scheduled internationalgame about a year ago and shouldhave been prepared. This shouldhave been a showcase to demon-strate to the world how well CapeTown organises events.

The city planners have disgracedthemselves and Cape Town in frontof an international sporting bodyand have let down thousands ofhockey fans.

This is not acceptable Cape Townit is simply not good enough. It ishigh time the people responsibleare held accountable.

Projek gaan gestremdes mobiel maakMARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

of borge nie.

From cleft lip to beautiful smileZeva Valentyn-Olckers was born with a dis-figuring cleft lip and palate. Since then a se-ries of operations has ensured that she nowlooks as lovely as other babies her age andthat her development won’t be impaired.

Her proud father, Heinrich Olckers ex-plains what a tremendous difference thesurgical procedures have made: “Zeva’s op-erations have completely transformed herface. We are extremely grateful that Zevawas able to benefit from the procedures andcan now lead a normal life. Thank you tothe Netcare Vodacom Smiles for You pro-gramme, Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital andTygerberg Hospital for making the surgerypossible.”

Mr Olckers was able to find assistance for

his precious daughter via the internetwhere a Good Samaritan strongly recom-mended that he contact Dr Liezl du Toit, aplastic and reconstructive surgeon at Net-care Blaauwberg Hospital in Cape Town.

Netcare Vodacom Smiles for You (CleftLip and Palate programme), which spon-sors surgery to repair cleft lip and palate de-formities affecting economically disadvan-taged patients around South Africa, offeredassistance.

Zeva was booked into the hospital, whereDr Du Toit operated on Zeva’s cleft lip. Hercleft palate was recently corrected at Tyger-berg Hospital, where Dr Du Toit also prac-tises.

Dr Du Toit says she has a special interest

in cleft lip and palate repair, as the condi-tion can have a devastating impact on achild’s development.

She points out that a team effort and di-verse skills are needed to repair a cleft lipand palate. This process may involve theservices of medical practitioners such asplastic and reconstructive surgeons, maxil-lofacial surgeons, anaesthetists and den-tists, as well as those of other healthcareprofessions such as speech and hearingtherapists, orthodontists, psychologistsand social workers.

Zeva’s treatment demonstrates the suc-cesses that can be achieved when the vari-ous healthcare practitioners and the publicand private sectors join forces.

Dash honours still up for grabsLast week’s Primi Naish Down-wind Dash was almost a carboncopy of the week before.

A group of 37 stand up paddlersand 25 surfskiers lined up at thestart hoping to make the best of the23 to 33 knots of wind.

The only difference was a littleless swell and the wind blowing abit more from the southeast. Thisallowed for an extremely smoothand fast first half of the run. Thesecond half as always, provided abit of a challenge with refraction offthe coast making or breaking com-petitors’ time and positions.

Off the beach, it was once againthe young junior, Dylan Frick, whoshowed a clear pair of heels to therest of the field but once out theback it was the experience of PeterPetersen that paid off.

Petersen connected runs and gotpast Frick until about 7km into therun when Frick passed his seniorcompetitor.

The young man made a dash tothe finish in a personal best time of48min57s with Petersen in a closesecond (49min03s) which was alsohis best time.

Last week’s winner, Ivan van Vu-uren, had to settle for third.

While the rest of the field competeon the faster 14’ boards, Greg Bert-ish (51min15s) did well to finishedsixth on his 12’6 board as he pre-pares for the upcoming worldchampionships.

Brigette van Aswegen (57min05s)set the field alight finishing firstamong the women with the 13th

best time overall.Sofie Rotobouille from France

was second posting a personal besttime of 1H01min55s. She was fol-lowed by Monika Wohlgemuth(1H06min45s) also posting a besttime.

Second Junior, Matthew van derLinden had a couple of falls whichcost him a bit of time, but he stillmanaged ninth overall in 52min49s.Ethan Koopmans also posted a per-sonal best of 59min32s as third jun-ior.

In total there were 14 personal

best times set and four newcomers. This week’s result sees Ivan van

Vuuren take the overall lead with13,7 points, ahead of Dylan Frickwith 16,4 points and Chris Bertishdropped points due to other com-mitments and is sitting in thirdwith 20,8 points. We have five moreweeks racing to go, so it’s all up forgrabs!

The single surfskis were domi-nated by the more experienced over45 class with Mike Schwan handingthe race to Boris Hales of SunsetBeach.

Schwann misjudged the last waveinto the finishandwasunceremoni-ously spilled out of his craft. Halesmade full advantage of his ill for-tune and took victory by 13 secondsin 38min40s.

The doubles fleet also had a greatbattle on the water and were relish-ing in the fine downwind condi-tions with all of them finishing un-der the magical 40 minute mark.Nick van Zyl from Table View, teamed up with Mark Gevers to winin a time of 38min6s.

The young guns in the singles

field just missed out on achievingthe sub-40 minute times.

Zaren Courtney (40min04s) man-aged to win this class with a narrowgap of six seconds over AndrewMcPherson.

Two surfski paddlers did notmake it to the finish. Mark Vogeshad his left paddle blade snap offmaking further progress very diffi-cult.

First-timer Phil Noton came tohis rescue and rafted their crafts to-gether and eventually made it intoTable View beach.

Luke takes Laguna raceSA 2011 wave kiteboard championLuke Mcillewee took the honours inlast week’s Laguna Mall Kiteboard se-ries.

Race organisers were in two mindsabout whether to have the event in aslalom or racing format as the windconditions seemed unpredictable.

The afternoon decision to run the sla-lom discipline proved the right one asthe speed of the southeasterly pickedup to about 22 knots.

A group of 29 kiteboards assembledat the starting line. Among them werefour previous series winners.

Greg Thijsse, former SA championand two-time series winner, Peter Pe-tersen, Colin Heckroodt and last year’swinner Oswald Smith were eager to gettheir nose out in front early on. Thijissewas out of the blocks first followingclosely by a huge fleet.

In crowded motocross style the com-

petitors took the first corner with onlylimited space to follow the ideal linearound the buoy. The mayhem saw Pe-tersen tangle lines with his Airushteammate Tyler Ryan.

Last year’s South African wave kite-board champion Luke Mcillewee man-aged to get through a big lull wheresome riders got stuck and took overfirst place which he managed to main-tain until the finish.

In the second position was Thijsseand third Oswald Smith.

Clinton Santillan took victory in themasters’ category. In the women’s classIva Lopes took home her first win afterbeating Mareike Brase.

Encouraging to see was the new tal-ent taking part. Although the 13-year-old newcomer Simone Swanepoel didnot manage to finish after arriving latefor the start, she looked very promis-ing.

Junior trials kicking offAll junior football players who havetheir hearts set on playing for the TableView Football Club must attend the tri-als on Sunday 26 February.

Trials for the u-7 to u-17 teams willkick off at 10:15.

Although the club is not keen on tri-als for its junior members it is a requi-rement of the club to assess each andevery junior player’s capabilities.

“Trials should not be considered asa scary or nerve-wracking experiencefor the kids.

They should think of them as moreof an opportunity to give everyone afair chance of being placed in their ap-propriate team,” explained the chair-man of the junior division, John San-tos.

“As always, it is a case of attitude asmuch as it is about aptitude and our ex-perienced coaches will hopefully unco-ver ‘new’ players who want to play thebeautiful game and learn and developtheir skills during their stay at TVFC,”

he added. All trials will be held at the club

grounds. The A-team coaches will head the tri-

als for each age group and will be com-municating throughout the processwith theother coaches in their respecti-ve age groups.

Players who cannot make the trialdates can still register as club memberson 25 February.
