When asked if the Khayelitsha N2 chaosmight be linked to Joe Slovo’s protest hesays: “Wehave information frompeople thatthere is an orchestrated campaign behindthis. We are meeting with some informantsandwe believewe are on the verge of finding
out who orchestrates it and where themoneycomes from.”Smith adds that they have CCTV footage as
to how these disruptions are done and howquickly it happens. He evenmentioned that it is suspected that
certain members of the media are in ca-hoots with these protesters and actively“assist and fan” their cause. On Fridaymorning sections of Omuram-
ba Road, Racecourse Road and KoebergRoad in Milnerton were closed and Smithreckons this is indicative of the protesterswanting to frustrate the public.“Some are late for work and others even
lose their jobs. This appears, when onelooks at the footage, to be their primarypurpose,” he adds.Smith is now recommending that a new
approach to deal with gang leadersmust befound before someone gets killed. He elaborates on a possible new ap-
proach when he says: “We will photographprotest ringleaders andoffer rewards to thecommunity member who could give us in-formation that could lead to successful ar-rest. I cannot says when this will becomea reality though, but it must happen soon.”Protesters did not have permission to
protest in the streets.Ward councillor Joy McCarthy agrees
completely with Smith and says the incen-tive behind the protest in Joe Slovo is tomake the ward “ungovernable”.“These protests are popping up all over
the place. We have two interdicts againstthe ringleaders of these incidents. The pur-pose is to obstruct. They don’t want anyprogress and say theDAhasnotworked forus,” she concludes. All 23 suspects appeared in the Cape
Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Eighteen of the 21 assault to dogrievous bodily harm (GBH) casesopened at Table View Police be-tweenApril andJune this yearhavegone to court and 13 of these haveled to convictions. This has led to Table View Police
spokesperson, Lt Elizabeth Munro, saying that domestic violence is apriority. She adds: “Cases being reported
are considered or taken in a seriouslight. Table View police detectivesare arresting suspects and sendingthem to court. The detectives do notdo withdrawals and have a zero tol-erance regarding the withdrawal ofcases.”According to her this tough
stance is done to the benefit of thevictims, because many tend to re-port assault cases and then with-draw it after a few days.
Serious assaultcases stay on roll

A 43-year-old man died on the scene whenhis vehicle collided into a tree near Melk-bosstrand on Sunday morning at 10:00.Paramedics fromER24 and local emergen-
cy services attended the incident shortly af-ter 10:00. Upon their arrival on the Old Dar-ling Road, off theM19 (Melkbosstrand), theyfound a Mazda sedan that was wedged upagainst a tree on the side of the road.Says ER24 spokesperson, Werner Ver-
maak: “When paramedics assessed the inci-dent they found the man still trapped in thevehicle. He sustained multiple fatal injuriesand was declared dead at the scene by thelocal fire and rescue department.”
The exact cause of the incident is not yetknown and will be investigated by the localpolice department. It is understood that theman was alone in the vehicle at the time ofthe incident.Melkbosstrandpolice officer,W/OWillem
Muller says he was on the scene himself andspeculates that the man might have fallenasleep behind the steering wheel.Says Muller: “There were no skid marks,
the road wasn’t wet, no tyre burst and in allprobability nowild animal ran in front of hisvehicle.”Muller is having trouble informing the de-
ceased’s sister, who apparently lives in Na-mibia. She is according to Muller the onlyfamily they are aware of.

“Avery exciting traditional project is flour-ishing in Du Noon where women are har-vesting the problematic Typha Capensisreed that, while not an alien but neverthe-less an invader, is choking our waterwaysand stormwater systems,” said Subcouncil1 chairperson, Heather Brenner during arecent public meeting. The women are using their natural tal-
ents to weave mats, baskets, trays, lamp-shades and containers tomention but a few.“The city is in partnership with the
project through its Economic Developmentand Environmental Resource ManagementDepartments to help sustain this initiativeand present a unique opportunity to bal-ance the needs of the community, the envi-ronment and the market economy,” contin-ued Brenner. Both the DA and theANChave contribut-
ed to the promotion of this project.V Brenner also touched on the city’s ef-
forts to provide much-needed relief to resi-dents affected by the recent heavy rainsparticularly in informal settlements.Said Brenner: “A total of 65 areas
throughout the metro, comprising 3 030households, were partly or severely incon-venienced by the heavy rains. In Subcoun-cil 1, parts of Du Noon, Doornbach, JoeSlovo Park andWitsandwere badly impact-ed and Table View did not escape in Ward4’s area just west of the bridge on Blaauw-berg Road at Heron Waters and in SpriggRoad, where the Rietvlei burst its banks inhistorical echo of the 1974 floods.”The city’s proactive preparations for the
current winter season have apparentlybeen instrumental in reducing the numberof areas and residents affected by heavy
rains.VWesfleur Hospital in Atlantis is about
to get an extension to accommodate “biggerand better” emergency facilities.“Costing in the region of R12 million, the
new Emergency Centre will be located onthe site of the existingWesfleurHospital ad-jacent to the CBD. The extension was posi-tioned on the only suitable space availableon the site, which in itself restricted the sizeof the building in many ways. The newbuilding will closely resemble the aesthet-ics of the existing hospital. The refurbish-ing of the existing ablution facilities at themain entrance to the hospital as well as therefurbishment of the existing trauma sec-tion and its conversion to a paediatric wardis part of the contract,” said BrennerBuilding is expected to commence to-

aangespreek.
So was dit dan ook die rugbyafslui-
My jare langs my seuns serugbywedstryde was van die beste.

ASunningdale family escaped serious inju-ry lastweekwhena car drove right throughtheir bedroom wall at the exact momentwhen neither were lying in their bed.At the moment of impact the woman at-
tended to a restless baby and her husbandwent to sleep in another room. After the accident the unidentified driver
of the vehicle fled the scene on foot and thesuspicion exists that he might have beenunder the influence. The father, Abbo Dussoumanou, says it
was very fortunate that no one in his familywas injured, but he adds that the whole af-fair has left a very sour taste in his mouth. The car drove over a ditch and through
the bedroom wall in the early hours ofWednesday morning.“It was terrible. At about 03:00 a car
slammed through our main bedroom wall. Our bed was splintered,” he says.According to him his wife, Oussou-
manou, got out of the bed when their one-year-old baby cried in the next room. While she was giving their babymilk she
heard the noise reverberating through thehouse.Abbo went to sleep in his other child’s
roomearly thatmorning andhe also got the
fright of his life when he heard a “tremen-dous noise”.“Everything shook! I had no idea what it
was, so I locked the door and phoned the po-lice. It might have been burglars... Whenthe police arrived we saw a car where ourbed used to be. The driver must havethought he or she killed someone and didn’twant to face the music,” he says.Thankfully the family will not have to
cover the costs of repairing the house sincethey are not the owners.Oussoumanou is nonetheless suffering
from shock, adds Abbo. The incident was reported on Table View
Neighbourhood Watch’s website onWednesday and immediately drew a big re-sponse.Questions surrounding theaccidentwere
answered by a friend of the family, BruceSanderson, who exclaimed in a post: “Godis great!”Suspicions that the driver might have
been driving under the influence will nownever be able to be verified according toCommunity Police Forum chairperson,Chris Visser. The driver had to be tested right after the
accident, and in fleeing it would be very dif-ficult to prove that he was intoxicated. The police are looking for any informa-
tion 021 521 3800.

In the throes of a freezing winter with feetstill stuffed into thick socks and heavyboots open-toed sandals are a summer’sdream away, so why would anyone botherwith a pedicure?“Because those socks have to come off
sometime, dear,” says artist NickyWalker, who specialises in oil canvasses ofwomen’sfeet.Nicky, who calls Parow home, occupies
himself with a rather distinct artistry: thepainting of female feet with oils on canvas. The graphic-designer-turned-fine-artist
plans to start a low-cost beauty/art bou-tique in Parow where women can unwind, have their feet pedicured, photographed, painted and pampered to their hearts’ con-tent.
Asked what his fascination is with feetand he’ll tell you that a woman’s feet arethe most beautiful feature and should betreated with utmost care. “Unfortunatelythis does not prove true for most women,”he sighs.“There are two types of people: thosewho
pedicure and those who don’t. I became aconvert to the pedicure cause; blame fiveyears of looking at grubby toes and filthytoenails enteringmy oldworkshop inTableView, for convincing me that there is littleuglier than an unvarnished, unattended-tofoot,” he says.Plattekloof born beauty therapist, Nazli
Theron couldn’t agree more: “It’s not justthework-slaveswhoare guilty of not caringwhat’s going on past their ankles, if theyeven get that far. Gosh, the number of hairycalves on women in this town is enough tomake anyone scream in despair!”

So teen 20:00 die aand het diestroom konstant ingekom totdaar omtrent 100 kinders was.
Ons was net drie grootmenseom toesig te hou, aangesien 30nog ’n beheerbare getal souwees. My man het by onskroeg gebly sodat die kindersnie iets daar neem nie.
My vriendin was by dievoordeur en dan by die kinderswat buitekant was.
Ek moes my slaapkamers entoiletarea gedurig dophou.

My bejaarde moeder hetverlede week deurgeloop en ekglo dis dieselfde gladdemond-manne.

Elect leaderswe respect, not fear“Great managers know instinctively thattheir power depends more on employee’scompliance than on threats or sanctions,”a wise but anonymous person once said. But a position of power just makes it
so easy to bark orders, to instill fear andintimidate to get exactly what you want.Yes, “power corrupts, absolute power
corrupts absolutely”, the British historianLord John Acton, so aptly declared. All of us can name quite a few exam-
ples of this phenomenon – the primaryschool teacher, the head boy, the policeofficer, the sergeant, the boss, the presi-dent or simply the office bully. How many times have we not seen
leaders voted into positions of power, justto see them turn into despots. Suddenlythey are presented with power to playwith, to manipulate, to abuse to get whatthey want – and they simply can’t resistnot to.When they taste power, their intentions
and promises of caring for others and tofight for solutions often disappear.Robert Mugabe comes to mind as a
prime example. Politicians, yes, we oftenthink of them first in this regard. But thecaring colleague who turned into aheartless boss when a more senior title isadded to the name, is for example, just asbad. Using power to harm or intimidatethose further down the ladder, typicallyto force them to do what he or she wants, also has a dictatorial ring to it.Hopefully we have our antennae on
high alert when choosing leaders werespect, and not because we fear them.

Partnerships behind new therapy centre
Principal Denis Stephen, the primary school’s head of therapy Jenny Stephen, MEC for Education Donald Grant, with Rotary Club Blouberg’s Marius Boraine and Geoff Chait.
PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES
Bloubergridge Primary School has a brandnew Remedial Therapy Centre valued atR600 000 thanks to the Blouberg Rotary Club(BRC).
This has become known as BRC’s flagshipproject over the last two years.
All the parties involved in the projectjoined MEC for Education Donald Grant lastweek during the official opening ceremony.
It was revealed that huge costs and plentyof time were saved by using a relatively newbuilding method involving polyurethanepanels.
The principal of Bloubergridge PrimarySchool, Denis Stephen, is very excited aboutthis new classroom, as are the relevantteachers. This school facesmany challenges, particularly with regard to dysfunctionaland previously disadvantaged families, re-sulting in the learners struggling to get the
best out of a quality education.“The greater Table View area has one
of the highest divorce rates of a middleclass area in the world. Quite a number ofhomes of our learners are dysfunctional, despite both parents still living at home,”het says.
“Alcoholism, drug abuse and gamblingproblems are but a few that beset our fami-lies. Many children have been trauma-tised by the break-up of their families. Many of these children are unable to ver-balise their feelings and play therapy isused to assist them to deal with theirhurts.”
Stephen continues by saying that theyneed to house the children’s play thera-pists in a building closer to the classroomsthan the current venue: a pre-cast garagebehind the hall.
The school’s therapy department currentlyconsists of a registered counsellor, a remedialteacher, a language laboratory teacher andtwo Audiblox practitioners.
The initial plans for this proposed class-room were for an 20 square metre woodenwendy house which was gong to cost aboutR120 000.
A local businessman then came on boardand offered to build this same size structurefor R60 000, using a new “green, space-age”building material.
As a result it has been decided to proceedwith a 100 square metre classroom, valued atR250 000. This sizeable sum would never beable to be raised through bingo alone, so themain suppliers have been approached and
large amounts of the materials have been do-nated, free of charge.
The Blouberg Rotary Club now only hascontributed R120 000 towards this class-room, which is a great example of how thebusiness community has “come to the par-ty” and benefited a good cause.
The costs of building were brought downand the rate of funding kept on climbing.
The total input from the Rotary Club ofBlouberg was R120 000 in cash, a small por-tion of the R600 000 of the worth of theproject. The parties who helped with theshortfall include community members whoplay bingo every month, construction andbuilding related companies, overseas Rota-ry clubs and the Rotary Foundation.

After more than a year, police are stilllooking for the family of a homeless manwho was killed in a pedestrian accident.
According to Milnerton police spokes-person W/O Daphne Dell, the reason whyhis body has been kept all this time is be-cause the investigating officer has beentrying to find the man’s next of kin.
Tom Pietersen was killed in DemocracyRoad in August 2012 by a driver of a ToyotaQuantum.
His legs were broken and he sustainedheavy cuts on his face before he was de-clared dead on the scene.
All of his possessions were in the trolleyhe was pushing at the time.
Since then police have searched far andwide for the next of kin, believed to be re-siding somewhere in the vicinity of Atlan-tis.
“The family might want to bury thebody, but if no one claims the deceasedthen the state will cremate it. We don’t usu-ally keep bodies for so long.”

Taxi Violence spoke about their new album on the Orange Couch this week.PHOTO: TWELVE ELEVEN PRODUCTIONS
Taxi Violence getsback to party rockLOUISA STEYL
@lounotes
Cape Town rock ’n roll band Taxi Vio-lence, have recently launched theirfourth album, Soul Shake.
The band visited TygerBurger’s OrangeCouch to talk about the albumandwho theyare.“Taxi Violence is a band that have been
around for nine years now,” says guitarist,Rian Zietsman.“We’ve comea longwayandgone through
a lot of ups and downs,” he says.“At the moment we’re on an up,” Rian
adds, referring to their new album.“Essentially we’re a rock band,” vocalist
George van der Spuy, jokes.“Wealways struggle to find aname for the
album, one that means something,” drum-mer, Louis Nel, says. “The funny thing iswe always seem to just choose one of thesongs that will be on the album, we choosethat as the album title,” he adds.
MeaningGeorge says the song picked has to em-
body the album, while Louis adds that it hasto sound cool and marketable as an albumtitle as well. “And then we kind of make upthe meanings afterwards,” Louis says.“The initial idea behind the albumwas to
do a party rock album, like, go back to ourrock roots,” saysGeorge, adding: “So I thinkthat’s exactly what we did.”“But it’s still got those emotional mo-
ments, but it’s essentially also just good oldfashioned rock ’n roll, the Taxi Violencesound,” George says. The band’s previous album, Long way
from Home, was an unplugged album, andthe band has said that they wanted to goback to “rocking out” on that album.“Even though that was a lot of fun, and
we learnt a lot, we can’t deny who we are,”Rian says.
“Being energetic on stage and in the stu-dio has always been part of our makeup, sowe kind of returned to that by design,” Riansays.”By ‘party rock’, we don’t mean Good
Charlotte, just upbeat music you can danceto,” Rian explains, while George throws outthe example of ACDC.Rian says they probably would have end-
ed up doing that anyway, they just verbal-ised it, before it came to be.
Jamming“Our songwriting process is very simple
actually,” George says. “Usually somebodycomes to the rehearsal with an idea, a basicriff,” he explains.“On this album, Jason wrote a lot of it,”
he says, referring to bassist, Jason Ling.“Then we basically jam it out, in the re-
hearsal studio, until we get some kind ofstructure,” he says.George puts melodies over that, which
are often just mumbled, nonsensical words, until they eventually find lyrics for a song.“Sometimes even we’re performing live,
he will mumble,” Rian points out jokingly. When they aren’t busy with Taxi Vio-
lence, the band members are involved inother musical projects. Louis and Rian arepart of Beast, while George also sings forGoodnight Wembley, who opened for inter-national act, Billy Talent, last week.I think Beast and Goodnight Wembley
have both become bands that are just asbusy, it’s not really a side thing,” Georgesays.“It’s two very different styles and you can
almost hear how both Beast and the Good-night Wembley have influenced Taxi Vio-lence,” he says.V For more information onTaxi Violence, visit theirwebsite at www.taxiviolence.com.V Taxi Violence is on the Orange Couch this week.Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their performance and interview.

The final of the Engen Knockout Chal-lenge went down to the wire as penal-ties were needed to separate Ajax Cape
Town and ASD Academy on Sunday. The final was the culmination of months
of qualifying matches and over 40 matchesat the weekend, and pitted together two ofthe title favourites.People’s Post is the tournament’s print
media sponsor. The Urban Warriors breezed through the
group stages, quarter-finals and semis witha perfect record as expected, scoring 13goals and conceding just one.
AttackASD had a less a comfortable route to the
final, drawing against United FC in the
group stage and scraping past Bishop Lavison penalties in the semis.
Buoyed by their success in the earlierrounds, Ajax needed no time to settle in thefinal and were in all-out attacking mode assoon as the first whistle sounded.
The defending champions won the mid-field battle and imposed their style of playon the game to take full control and keepASD pinned in their own half.
Ajax regularly got in behind the opposi-tion defence, but couldn’t come up with anaccurate final ball to take the lead.
The second half started as the first had, with Ajax pushing for a breakthrough andASD hesitant to commit numbers to attack.
Though the Urban Warriors continued tolook dangerous, they seldom threatenedand found the opposition keeper up to thetask when tested from long range.
PenaltiesNeither team found a goal in the remain-
ing minutes, and, in the end, Ajax won 4-3on penalties, after the match ended in agoalless draw after regular time, to taketheir sixth title in the 10th instalment of theChallenge.
Meanwhile, tournament hosts Santos hada tournament to forget. The People’s Teamfinished sixth overall, after finishing sec-ond in 2012.
Pinelands club Old Mutual Academy fin-ished fifth, Grassy Park’s Crusaders endedseventh and Mitchells Plain side KenparkUnited were eighth. Hanover Park FC fin-ished ninth and Green Point Salesians fin-ished 10th overall.V To view galleries of all the exciting Engen KnockoutChallenge action, visit the website www.peoplespost.co.za.
