Special day forvictims of abuse

Little faces lit up and youngsters squealedwith delight as an early Christmas lunchwas held for them. This was the first time in a long while
that a smile had been seen on their facesas all the children are victims of sexualabuse.Members of the Parow Court, which
dealswith childrenwhohave been sexuallyabused joined hands and arranged a spe-cial, fun-filled day for children across thecity on Wednesday. The girls and boys aged from five to 14,
have all beenmolested and abused by fami-ly members or people whom they trusted. All children had testified against their
perpetrators who have since been sen-tenced.“These children have been through so
much and this is the least we can do forthem,” says Charmaine Harrison, a courtofficial.“It will blow your mind when you hear
what the children had to endure from fa-thers, brothers and neighbours. It’s sad tothink thatwehave people in thisworldwhowill abuse these innocent children, but weare glad that justice has taken its courseand that all the perpetrators are in jail.”The lunchwas held and sponsored byMc-
Donalds in Parow and the children got toplay, eat and just be children. Each child also received a gift on the day,
which was sponsored by the FoschiniGroup IT department.“These children have become part of us,
we are like one big family,” says Harrison.“The bond thatwe havewill never be bro-
ken.”
With the festive season approaching sheurged parents to safeguard their children.“Parents need to take a stand and be in-
volved with their children. They need toknow what their child is doing, and wherethey are. There are dangerous people in theworld who want to hurt children, but it isthe parents who should prevent bad situa-tions from arising. With school holidayshere, all measures need to be put in placefor our children to be safe. Children shouldalways be in a safe environment and welllooked after at all times.”A social worker from Safeline says it is
of utmost importance that the children’scounselling continues.“A child as young as threemust get coun-
selling as it will help them cope with theabuse.“The mother must ensure her/his safety
now and teach her that no one is allowedto touchher, to prevent anyabuse fromhap-pening again. The child will think ‘daddyloves me’ and think it is okay if someoneelse also touches, and thatmust be prevent-ed.”“In such situations we normally advise
that the perpetrator stays away from thechild, but in this case the fatherwould haverights to his child. This must be super-vised.”She added that if a child who has been
raped does not receive counselling, thedamage may become worse.“If the child does not receive counselling,
she/he might not remember it now, butwill in later years and this will be worse. The child could start acting out, behavingbadly. So counselling is essential.”Harrison would like to thank everybody
who assisted in making the day special.

Economic development programmes inBellville South are helping to boost busi-ness in the area.
The Bellville South Youth and WomenCentre co-ordinatedby theWomenofWorthMovement (WOW) recently hosted their an-nual expo at the civic centre in KasselsvleiRoad and it was an example of how theyhave been growing from strength tostrength.
Co-ordinator at the centre, Joy Warriespointed out the programme is taking rootin the community despite the many chal-lenges that they are facing.
She pointed out that they are keeping totheir aims of creating a sustainable plat-form for the unemployed towards economicself-sufficiency.
“Sustainability is the biggest challengesthat NGOs are facing in the current finan-cial climate,” she said.
“Thankfully Provincial Social Develop-ment forged a partnership with us and theyare supporting us in our quest.
“Last year we mentioned the challengesthat unemployed single mums are facing tobecome economically self reliant, and withtheir support we were able to assist 40 sin-gle women with a sustainable programmefor the next financial year.
“However, our challenges still remainthe same as we are unable to attract youngwomen under the age of 35 to register as re-cipients of this opportunity.”
Warries also pointed out that thereseemed to be a buzz of excitement at the cen-tre this year with participants realising theimportance of empowering themselveswith new skills.
“In our efforts to provide training in artsand handcraft people realised that they hadthe potential to start their own micro-busi-nesses, and someof themarealreadyupand
running,” she said.“For the first time we have also had men
joining with six registered, and four havealready completed their courses.
“Another excitingdevelopment is thatwestarted a mosaic course which was verysuccessful with 18 people already complet-ing the 20-week course.
“The sewing and one-year Garment Con-struction course was also well-attended andit is a joy to see our ladies becoming moreand more adventurous with their creativi-ty.”
She added that financial and computerskills were also important in the communi-ty and they provided workshops to empow-
er disadvantaged women in financial andbusiness skills.
“This year we partnered with Educom-pass which provided two Micro MBA ac-credited business courses at the centre.
“Some 28 people successfully completedthe course and 20 of our residents also com-pleted an accredited basic computercourse.”
Another exciting development is that thecentre has started a Market Day every firstSaturday of the month for participants andcrafters to start selling their products to thecommunity.
For more information about the centrecall Warries on 073 556 1025 or 021 951 5487.
Showing off some of their handiwork at the expo were Francis Chisia and Clara Simpson.

The announcement of an average 5,5 % hikein bus fares is expected to leave a bitter tastein the mouth of commuters.Thepricehike comes into effect onMonday
30 December, Golden Arrow has announced. The public transport service provider says
“soaring fuel costs” are a contributing factor, adding the increase has “only been consid-ered after all other cost absorptionmeasureshave been explored and exhausted”.Golden Arrow general manager FE Meyer
says in a statement: “Over the last 12 monthsthe diesel price has increased by 14 %, whilenationally determined wages escalated by8,5 %. These two cost items constitute about74 % of Golden Arrow’s total costs. This isfurther compounded by the cumulative
shortfall in funds from the Division of Reve-nue Act (DORA) subsidy allocation, whichhas not been in line with the contracted esca-lation rate.”In spite of the challenges, Golden Arrow
has continued implementing its recapitalisa-tion programme. In the last year 120 MANHB2 and 10 Volvo
BR7 buses have been added to the fleet at acost of about R182 m.Passengers can postpone paying the in-
creased fares until 13 January 2013 in thecase of 10-ride clipcards (which are valid for14 days) bought on Sunday 30 December anduntil 5 February 2013 in the case of monthlyclipcards (valid for 37 days) bought on thesame date.

Disability does not keep Nathali Raynersfrom Ravensmead from pursuing herdreams to give back to the community.
While a form of polio as a child left herwith a physical disability to walk properlyshe decided from an early age that she wasnot going to let it get her down.
“Onmy 17th birthday I took it all very se-riously when I started working with thelate Pastor Tommy Klein,” she said.
“His projects to help in the communitymade me realise that this is what I wantedto do and it has become a passion inmy life.
“I’m currently involved in projects forthe City of Cape Town’s Sport and Recrea-tion department, Disabled People South Af-rica, and an HIV/Aids lay counsellor.
“My future plans are to do more trainingto equip myself for more community work, and next year I want to releasemy first gos-pel CD.”
Part of her work is also visiting childrenat Tygergberg Hospital and she recentlyspent her time at the facility to do her partfor World Aids Day.
“Looking back on what I achieved in life, andwhat I still want to achieve, one of themis a better life for our children, especiallyour children who have to live with the vi-rus,” she continued.
“When I visit some of these children inhospital the reward is their smiles whenthey realise that there is someone whocares about them.
“Working in this field sometimes bring
tears to my eyes, but it is worthwhile be-cause I love what I’m doing.
“Reaching out and caring for our chil-dren ismy first priority. My saying is ‘yourchild is my child and so we build our futureby caring for them’. Let us stand up todayand protect what is ours.”

is theworst fatalities the province has expe-rienced in three years, according to Minis-ter of Transport and Public Works for theWestern Cape, Robin Carlisle.“Accordingly, I welcome the new and
very far reaching measures to counterdrunkendriving recently announced by theNational Prosecuting Authorities,” he saidin a media statement last week.Thesemeasuresmean that drunk drivers
who manage to avoid blood testing may, nevertheless, still be sentenced to long jailterms as the state would no longer have torely only on blood tests for convictions.“In addition, I have decided to call on all
law enforcement agencies to pull over se-dans and trucks, in addition to taxis and
buses, for the purpose of assessing whetheror not the drivers are fatigued, as well asfor the carrying out of other safety checks,”he said.In terms of the National Road Traffic Act,
a traffic officer may take away the keys ofa fatigued driver and forbid him to drive forat least four hours.Such a driver – who in the opinion of a
traffic officer, is fatigued – will be asked topark in a safe area and their keys will beremoved for four hours, after which thekeys will be returned and the drivers maythen resume their journey.“I trust that all road users will under-
stand that we cannot permit a fatigueddriver to continue to operate a vehicle, kno-wing that fatigue may lead, as it has doneseveral times in recent days, to very seriouscrashes. A fatigued driver is just as dange-rous as a drunken driver,”he said.

The finals of the Bondi Blu/Laguna Mallracing series last week proved that theslalom formula is a winner.
“This discipline will be part of the KiteWorld Series (PKRA) to be held nextyear,” says organiser of the local seriesOlaf van Tol.
This format of racing has also provedto be the most popular among partici-pants in the Professional Windsurfers’Association (PWA) World Tour.
This is also an easy event to follow forspectators, as seeing how positions rapid-ly change during the heats added to theexcitement along with the inevitablerushes while rounding the buoys andclose racing till the finish line.
During the last race of the current se-ries Colin Heckroodt not only won thelast tour stop but became the overall win-ner as well.
He was followed by the youngster Dy-lan Adriaans who is actually still compet-ing in the youth class.
Third place went to Olaf Marting, a pre-vious world speed record holder.
Iva Lopez claimed the overall women’stitle from a very close second finisher Si-mone Swanepoel. In the masters’ classArmin Wohlgemuth from Germany fin-ished first overall followed by GrantRoss.
