“In keeping with this administration’s com-mitment to building a Caring City, the dead-line for applying for special rates rebateshas been extended until 31 October thisyear. This will assist residents who need as-sistance in paying their monthly municipalaccounts,” says Alderman Ian Neilson, exec-utive deputy mayor and mayoral committeemember for finance.
Senior citizens who are 60 years or older,as well as recipients of a disability grant orpension, could qualify for rates rebatesranging from 10 % to 100 %.
The upper limit of total household incomefor these two categories has also been raisedfrom R10 000 to R10 500 per month. This year
the City of Cape Town has amended the defi-nition of household income to discount do-nations from family members.
In addition, all property owners with a to-tal household income of R3 000 or less permonth may apply to be registered as indi-gent, and may qualify for a 100 % rates andrefuse rebate. Their arrears may also bewritten off once during occupation of theproperty.
“Apart from the full rates rebate on house-holds earning R3 000 or less per month orwhose residential properties are valued atR200 000 or less, the city has added an indi-gent category for people who have an in-come greater than R3 000 and not more than
R4 000 per month, to apply for a 50 % ratesrebate,” says Neilson.
“We call on community leaders to assistpotential beneficiaries in registering forthis financial assistance. The rebates are forthe current financial year and remain validuntil the end of June next year.
According to Trevor Blake, the city’s di-rector: revenue: “Rebates are also availableto bona-fide non-government organisations, public benefit organisations, health andwelfare institutions, educational institu-tions, historical monuments, and more.”
For more information call the City of CapeTown Call Centre on 0860 103 089 or visityour nearest municipal office.

A man travelling to work nearly diedwhen his car was struck by a steel blockon McIntyre Road at the Panoramabridge on the N1.
Sarel Lingenvelder from Bellville wasdriving at 05:10 a week ago when his ToyotaYaris was hit by the moving object.
Although Lingenvelder was not injured, his car suffered huge damages costing himR20 000.
Since the incident, Parow police havestepped up patrols in the area to ensure theincident doesn’t happen again.
“I felt the impact as the steel block hit thecar. I immediately stopped to see the dam-age,” says Lingenvelder.
“I never expected this to happen. I hadsuch a terrible fright. The whole roof andwindscreen were damaged. I couldn’t see an-yone as it was dark, but someone must havethrown it, as there is no way it could havejust landed on my car. I drove on and wentto the police station.”
He says there is no doubt that if he hadbeen driving any faster he would have beenseriously injured or died.
“I was driving slowly and that must bewhy I didn’t get hurt. After the incident I re-ported it to the Bellville police station whothen transferred the case to the Parow policestation.”
Lieutenant Kevin J Williams, says eventhough patrols are taking place motoristsshould also play their part and remain safe.
“Always make sure that the doors of thevehicle are locked and the windows arerolled up when approaching a stop street orrobot. Don’t leave your keys in the ignitioneven if just for a moment when you leaveyour vehicle. Hide any valuables in the bootor the glove compartment while you driveand always avoid driving down desertedroads day or night.
He says: “Don’t pick up hitch-hikers atnight when approaching your car or driv-er’s door and when you leave a destinationensure that your key is already in yourhand. Motorists also need to make sure theydon’t leave identification tags with theirname and address on your keyring as thiswould give hijackers or thieves all their in-formation.”
Out of pocket, but still alive

Retail therapy is supposed to be “shoppingwith the primary purpose of improving thebuyer’s mood or disposition.” Actually it isa psychological disorder called “oniomania”or “compulsive shopping disorder”, accord-ing to researchers at Melbourne Universityin Australia. Some idea of theseriousness of the conditioncanbegauged froma2001 studyby the European Union whichfound that 33 % of shoppershave “a high level of addictionto rash or unnecessary con-sumption”. Further evidenceof the affliction can be seen inthe increasing incidence ofobesity which also results from“rash or unnecessary con-sumption”. The challenge forthe retail industry is to findways to increase the number ofoniomanicas and to make surethey are not cured. One third ofcustomers making unnecessary purchasescertainly helps the turnover, but imaginethe effect on the bottom line if the percentageof those with compulsive shopping disordercould be pushed up to, say, 50 or even 60 %?
To do this the managers of supermarketshave devised a number of ways to keep shop-pers in the store and exposed to temptationfor as long as possible while promoting thefiction of quick and convenient shopping.
The favourite trick is to put the newest, slowest cashiers on the express tills to frus-trate those healthy customers purchasing 10items or less. The cashiers are taught not tocount up to 10 and they are programmed toring the bell to call the supervisor as oftenas possible. Shoppers in a hurry have al-ready learned that it is better to join the trol-
ley-pushers in the long queues because theymove faster through more tills manned bymore efficient staff. But it is a trap set forthose suffering from compulsive shoppingdisorder. Store managers know that themain impulse purchases are sweets, chips,
soft drinks, chocolates andmagazines. They have alsonoticed that smart shopperslike women with small chil-dren know how to avoid theaisles where these temptinggoodies are on display.
So, to deal with the onioma-niacs and take revenge on thesmart shoppers, they havecreated, in the name of im-proved service, a new systemwhich funnels customersthrough a single queue to-wards a battery of tills regu-lated by a ghost voice whichannounces “Teller No 27” or
whatever. The system produces nice longqueues and the stores take advantage by lin-ing the route with shelves stacked withsweets, cool drinks, chips, chocolates (theimported, high-mark-up kinds), nuts andother tempting treats you avoided in thestore. Pity the young mother trying to dragtwo screaming pre-schoolers through thisvalley of temptation! In a state of acute em-barrassment, she really has no option but tobribe the little monsters with sweet things.
And so the young are corrupted while theresolve of those on diet is sabotaged and thehealth of the nation is undermined. Is it anywonder that the world has an obesity prob-lem? But, hey, the disease is good for the bot-tom line and what could be more importantthan that?
Big people better fora store’s bottom line

These were the words De GrendelSubcouncil chairperson, JamesVos, used in conclusion of hisspeech about recycling.
He addressed some of the mainquestions about recycling at thelast subcouncil meeting.
These included which materialsmay be deposited at the Tygerdal(which is going to be closed) andWelgelegen drop-off sites, as well as
where these materials ultimatelyend up. According to Vos the an-swer to the first question is: “Paper, plastics, cardboard, metal, glassbottles, tetra-pak, polystyrene, elec-tronic waste, mixed recyclables andother materials such as whitegoods, wood and bricks.”
He answered the second: “Materi-als are taken to the recycling com-panies in the industry, such as,Consol, Mondi, SA Metal and recy-cling associations.”
He continued by encouraging
community-based institutions suchas schools and sporting clubs to as-sist with recycling initiatives bycreating drop-off zones.
“The fact of the matter is that al-though many of our residents al-ready separate their paper andglass and dispose of it separately,we do not yet have a viable collec-tion system for separated waste. With much of my attention on is-sues relating to caring for the envi-ronment I am planning to organisea local campaign to create aware-
ness about home recycling with thekey message that every singlehousehold within the area has a re-sponsibility to recycle and look atways to undertake waste minimisa-tion. If we all recycle, they say, we’lltake pressure off the planet, andwe’ll save our money, our healthand our environment,” said Vos.
Ten years ago, the population es-timate was roughly 2,6 million peo-ple. In 2005 Cape Town’s almost 3,2million residents, thousands of visi-tors and hundreds of businesses
were generating about 2,7 milliontonnes of general waste that had tobe sent to our fast-filling landfills.
Today it is approximately 3 mil-lion tonnes.
He concluded: “Waste minimisa-tion and recycling are no longerjust challenges met by a few. Theypresent opportunities and an invi-tation to make a contribution to-wards making Cape Town a betterplace for all. What the city needs isa quantum leap in terms of attitude, commitment and investment.”

DESIREÉ RORKE
For me the most terrible thing of havingbeen “blind” for an hour or two, was theconstant anxiety of being acutely awareof every single sound or shuffle behindme or next to me, and not knowing whatit was.
How would you experience blindness ifgiven a slight glimpse into the world of thevisually disabled?
This is exactly what the non-profit organi-sationBlindSA, aims todowith their annualDinner in the Dark, campaign, and the in-sights gained by diners is startling. Thisyear’s event, hosted by the Cape Peninsulabranch, took place at the Protea Hotel on Sat-urday evening.
Arriving in a dining room where the lightswere dimmed down to resemble a late twi-light, I at first felt comfortable in the lowlight.
As long as I have the flashlight on my cell-phone nearby, in case I had to make a noteor two. But where is my cellphone?
I opened my bag and started fiddlingaround for my phone in vain. But there isjust not enough light to see anything inside.I furiously started looking around for thesource of the dim light to assist me in myfruitless search, but that I couldn’t find ei-ther. Very quickly frustration sets in and afew seconds later I found myself gripped infear.
Finally giving up, I stormed out of theshadowy room and headed straight for thebathroom, where I successfully retrievedmyelusive phone.
The realisation hits me like a train in thenight: “What would I do, if the lights are nev-er switched on again?
This is the unfortunate reality for nearlyhalf a million people in South Africa cur-rently and the numbers are growing.
Blind SA is an organisation of blind peoplefor blind people, and aims to do whatever isnecessary to improve the quality of life ofblind South Africans, to enable them to playan active role in the socio-economic life ofthe country.
According to André Vosloo, chairman ofthe Peninsula branch, much disinformationstill exists about blind people.
“A few decades ago blind people were em-
ployed only as switchboard operators, whereas today they work in many fieldsfrom physiotherapy to the business worldand information technology,” he said.
Blind SA was established by blind personsin 1946, during a time when blind people inSouth Africa had no opportunities and wasforced to advocate for themselves.
“Back then blind people had no jobs. Theyworked in workshops and instead of receiv-ing a salary they were compensated inmeals. And when they asked to be paid inmoney, the question was always, ‘Why?Whatdoyouwant todowithmoney?’ Societyneeds to know that we as blind people canbe an asset to the community,” he said, anargument that was proved when a group ofblind waitrons entered the dining room toserve the seeing diners, who then had toplace blindfolds over their eyes.
The waitrons received a brief layout of theroom, ten minutes prior and dinner wasserved without a single glitch.
The same cannot be said for the dinershowever. Finding the food on your plate andthen directing your fork in the right direc-tion, in itself is rather challenging, provid-ing that the food stays on the fork.
And you’re nothing but lucky should youfind your wine glass on the table again fora swig of encouragement.
Apart from the obvious, the dinner con-versation was strikingly different than usu-al. It was as if everyone at the table was sud-denly switched on by a giant hand, genuine-ly listening to the others with a keen senseof interest, as opposed to just hearing thetalker out, before spitting out another non-consequential utterance.
But as I slowly found my bearings in thisdark world, one action at a time, there wasone thing that caught my attention, genuinefun and laughter.
For the entire time that I kept the blindfoldon, my other senses were acute and I“looked” at things, in an altered way, witha deeper insight perhaps.
Even so, the dark became too intense, longand lonely, and soon enough I felt compelledto pull of the blindfold.
With half my dinner next to my plate, anda table full of knocked over wine glasses, thesignificance of the message is crystal clear.
Blind people are more than capable of liv-ing a meaningful life.
Dinner in the Darka real eye openerDie seniors van die Tygerberg-dienssen-
trum is onlangs tydens ’n inligtingsessiedeur dr.

Fuzli-Nur (8) was unable to talk, chewand keep clothes on his body. He wasspinning around for hours, clapping hisears until they bled when he was enteredat the Snap Centre in Vierlanden, Dur-banville.
His parents were told that nothing wouldbecome of him.
Now, six years later, Fuzli-Nur is a Grade3 pupil at Snap Academy at the Snap Centre. This was his only chance of a future as noother school would accept him.
Next year he, as well as most of the otherGrade 3 pupils, will need a Grade 4 class-room.
The Snap Academy, a primary school forchildren with special needs, which specialis-es in autism and learning disabilities, is ap-pealing to everyone for help for their Grade4 classroom donation drive.
Autism is a neurological disability and isconsidered to be the fastest growing develop-mental disability in the world. If no interven-tion is received, autism has devastating ef-fects on not only the child, but also the entirefamily. The cost of intervening in the life ofa child with special needs can amount toR120 000 per year, said Annelies van Rijswi-jk, director of Snap Centre.
The school is also in need of an additionalmulti-grade classroom to facilitate thosechildren who require a more practical cur-riculum.
Snap is a non-profit organisation and theydo not receive any support from the govern-ment for materials, infrastructure andequipment. Their fundraising effortsthroughout the year are mainly focused onsponsoring childrenwhocannot afford inter-vention and therefore additional funding isrequired to expand their facilities.
For Snap to continue the important workof providing these children with their basicright to education and an independent fu-ture, they need the support of businesses andfriends.
Donations are sought of money, as well asbuilding materials such as the structure ofthe classrooms, electricity and plumbing, paint, an air conditioner, cupboards, car-pets, a computer, tables, chairs, magneticboard, books, blinds and a CD player.
Snap is registered in terms of Section 18Aof the Tax Income Act and any donation willreceive a tax rebate certificate.

Your cheque’s in the postAfter the terrible killing of the young manwho only wanted to sell his car on the inter-net, one should be aware of the dangers outthere.
My daughter-in-law advertised her indus-trial carpet cleaning machine for sale andwas thrilled when the first caller wanted tobuy it. He asked for her bank details to depos-it the money into her account and wouldsend his driver with the proof of payment tocollect the machine.
After calling her for details they duly ar-rived, bringing the print-out of the transac-tion adding it would take two days for thepayment to show.
Long story short she checked every day
and there was no payment and reported it tothe police who said it was a scam.
A detective later called to confirm, fortu-nately the driver and the “buyer” had left tel-ephone numbers by which they could betraced but they are part of a syndicate with45 members and her case was no 112 in whichthey had defrauded advertisers, with alltheir banking details.
Please don’t ever give your banking detailsto any unknown person and wait for the pay-ment to show or the cash payment before youlet your goods go and be careful who getsyour address, it could be a fatal mistake

Show respectfor the disabledDuring the month of September several in-itiatives create awareness around disabil-ities. These include National Deaf Aware-ness Week, Eye Care Awareness Monthand Casual Day. Through all of this, weseem to toe the line more than usual, main-ly because of the buzz created around it,whereas we should in actual fact be doingit every day, year round.
In South Africa approximately half amillion people are totally or partiallyblind and another half a million profound-ly deaf. This number increases exponen-tially when you add the number of peoplein wheelchairs and other forms of disabili-ties such as cerebral palsy, spina bifidaand disabilities due to accidents or illness-es.
We often receive complaints from thedisabled about able-bodied persons nottaking the disabled into account. And theyare right – on any given day you can takea drive to shopping centres where the disa-bled parking bays are taken up by able-bodied motorists. It’s the little things thatmake all the difference. So, don’t park inhandicapped bays, don’t use handicappedbathrooms and drive slowly and help disa-bled people who need assistance by open-ing a door.
Show respect to the disabled today. Peo-ple don’t plan on getting disabilities, butit happens every day.

This is a personal letter to express my sin-cere appreciation for the kindness of anhonest, unknown person/s who verykindly found the keys of my car left in thedoor of my car, which was parked in thecarpark at Tygerberg Hospital.
This Good Samaritan wrote a note,“You left your keys in the door. I’ve putthem under the pillow”. The folded notewas put on the pillow on the front seat ofthe car. No name or telephone number. Iwas away for four hours and when I gotto the car I looked in my bag and in myknitting bag, no keys.
I had a spare ignition key in my purseand when I went to unlock the door I sawthat it was open. By this time I was verystressed and tired. I was frightened thatsomeone could be watching me. I jumped
into the car, locked the door, found thenote and just burst into tears when Ifound the keys.
What a miracle that my car was stillwhere I had left it, and being unlocked, for four hours. Also that no one had no-ticed this or seen the note, which waswritten on lined exercise paper.
I think it might have been a student. Ithad been folded and didn’t draw atten-tion. I can only surmise that this person/sbelieved all would be well. I just burst intotears and thanked and praised God forHis goodness and asked for blessings onthe Good Samaritan. He/she saved me alot of inconvenience and stress, especial-ly at my age, 80 years. Thank you.

Figures on the treatment of alcohol abuse overa 12-month period indicates that 28% of thosetreated by the national alcoholism council inthe Western Cape were between the ages ofseven and 17 years.
Dr Andreas Plüddeman, chairperson of theSouth African National Council on Alcohol-ism (Sanca) in the Western Cape, who madethis statement in his annual report, describedthe fact as a concerning trend.
Plüddeman said Sanca, as well as the Medi-cal Research Council statistics, indicate meth-amphetamine, commonly known as tik, as themost common choice of abuse. Dagga is thesecond most common.
According to Plüddeman the proportion ofheroinuse remained stable comparedwith the
previous year at 7%.Plüddeman said dealing with clients de-
pendent on methamphetamine is particularlychallenging due to the mental health side ef-fects, which includes psychosis.
From April 2011 to March this year, Sanca’smost recent data collection period, theyserved over 1 700 clients - an 18% increase incomparison with the previous year.
Both Plüddeman and regional director ofSanca, Dr David Fourie, said in their reportsthat government subsidies have been insuffi-cient to meet the growing needs and risingcosts within the sector.
This places an enormous burden on NGOsto keep raising the necessary funds to remainoperational.

To better the students’ education, North-link College has launched an Informa-tion Communication Technology (ICT)Innovation Project, which is driven bythe education and training unit.
This comes after all FET colleges areobliged to step up their ICT multimedia toimprove the development of the future stu-dents, who both at school and in industryare exposed to these recent trends.
The target market of the FET sector hasbecome so engrossed in ICT that it seemsnatural that they receive their future educa-tion and training development in an envi-ronment to which they are accustomed.
The ICT Innovation project focuses on in-frastructure development, staff training, software support and a new pedagogical ap-proach.
The project was launched with the instal-lation of ICT equipment in a number ofclassrooms at each of the seven campusesand includes a podium that was custommade to house all the necessary ICT equip-ment safely; along with a screen, tower caseand keyboard and a mouse.
The project is further supported by thefact that the majority of educator staff thathave their own laptop computers can con-veniently be connected to the podium andsave time before presenting a lesson.
Ina Louw, head of department of BlendedLearning at Northlink College was excitedabout the project.
“With this project we will be taking thenext step of innovation and closing the tech-nology gap between the students and the lec-turer to help improve the students’ learningexperience.”
Northlink staff training will include expo-sure to the new Northlink Learner Manage-ment System (LMS) powered by Moodlewhich will serve as the platform for theproject.
The second phase of the project will seethat the classrooms where the podiums areinstalled will be furnished with more tech-nological equipment such as projectors.
With the implementation of these phasesNorthlink College will be equipping and em-powering their lecturing staff to make theclasses that they conduct more interactiveand conducive to learning.
This will not only change the learning ex-perience for the students, but change thewhole pedagogical approach to educationand training.

. Kaartjies vir die konsert wisselvan R110 tot R160. Dit is beskikbaarby www.cultivaria.com of by 021872 9754.

“Beat the fuel-price blues: take a bus ortrain!” Brett Herron, mayoral commit-tee member for transport, roads andstormwater of the City of Cape, said inthe light of last week’s significant fuelprice hike.
The City of Cape Town urges all motoriststo consider their transport and mobility ha-bits and see where these can be changed tominimise the impact of this increase.
Residents and motorists are asked to con-sider public transport wherever possible orto walk or cycle in order to take the stingout of the price hike.
“Motorists will be paying 37 % more forfuel and 30 % more for diesel than they werepaying in January last year, according to fu-el costs listed on the Automobile Associati-on website,” he said.
“The city is committed to providing an in-tegrated multi-modal public transport net-work in the coming years, which providesa seamless, convenient, affordable, and safepublic transport service to all Capetonians.
“Whilst we are still some way from achie-ving these objectives, and while using cur-rent public transport may not yet be desira-ble for all of our residents, we are asking re-sidents to consider how they can minimisetheir reliance on private vehicle usage.
“Increasing private vehicle ownershipand usage, particularly single occupancy ve-hicles, in Cape Town is not sustainable, andit is for this reason that the city, in partner-ship with the national and provincial go-vernment, is rolling out the integrated rapidtransit project, Herron said.
The city has also recently launched TravelSMART. The Travel SMART programmeaims to work towards sustainable transport, like any transport with a low impact on theenvironment such as public transport-ori-ented initiatives, non-motorised transportlike cycling and skateboarding, lift-clubbingand low-emission vehicles.
“The capacity of the current transport in-frastructure is under increasing pressure, resulting in longer peak periods, worseningcongestion, and wasting valuable time intraffic – not to mention the ever-increasingcost on the pocket of the commuter,” Herronsaid.
The MyCiTi bus system has been opera-ting an interim limited service for over a ye-ar. “In this time the servicehas seenamassi-ve appetite from our residents for qualitypublic transport andwehaveenjoyednearlyfive million passenger trip journeys. We areworking hard to extend the MyCiTi servicesacross the entire city, and working with Me-trorail to improve the quality of the currenttrain service,” he said.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the mostcharitable of them all?
As one of the judges at the Bella DonnaFinishing Classes’ award ceremony at LoveCake Café, I would be one of the mirrors thisday.
If I could reflect just half of what the girlshave done for charities then I’ll be morethan happy.
Unfortunately due to space constraints,I’ll only be able to manage 1/100th.
The Miss Teen Bella Awards on Saturdaysaw 10 girls aged between 13 and 17 get to-gether at Burgundy Estate and tell the judg-es about their recent work in charities.
Charities from as far as Khayelitsha andMilnerton ultimately benefited from theyoung conscientious trend-setters of Edge-mead’s Bella Donna Finishing Classes.
They were supposed to help out in which-ever way possible at these places and in-volve their friends and family in the pur-poseful distribution of smiles.
The involvement of others might havebeen difficult were it not for their convivialconviction.
Eventual winner, Lauren Ohlsson, spent100 hours helping the elderly at Parow Sen-ior Centre.
She will now act as an ambassador by vis-iting schools in Cape Town and getting theyouth involved in helping those who so des-perately need it.
According to Bella Donna operationsmanager, Mandy Ross, the girls spent a to-tal of 301 hours in the service of others.
Lauren and runner-up, Sarah AnneHowarth, as well as the delightfully namedsecond runner-up, Juliette Montague-Fry-er, won prizes which were generously do-nated by many sponsors.
Bella Donna Finishing Classes offer a
wide variety of subjects such as dance, firstaid, goal setting, public speaking, wardrobestyling and modelling.

LOUISA STEYL
With the poise of someone whohas been performing for years,Lucy Kruger’s effortless “cool-ness”, is fascinating.
With the launchofherdebutalbum around the corner, you can expect to hear alot more from thisJoburg lass who haschosen, via Gra-hamstown, to nowmake Cape Townher home.
“I’ve alwayssung, since I wasvery little,” Lu-cy says matter-of-factly, whileshe explains thather father and allher uncles playguitar,
making music a means of bond-ing for her family.
While Lucy has been involvedin demo recordings since she was17, this is her first full-length al-bum.
“I wanted to wait until I wascompletely ready,” Lucy says,
before quickly adding thatshe realised that the“right time” was nevergoing to happen.
She started work-ing on the album,Cut those Strings,in February, withwell-known musicproducer, SchalkJoubert.
Lucy explainsthat she hadknown him sinceshe was a teen,
and thathe washer onlyreal linkto themusic in-dustry,so shephoned
him and asked for his help tomake her mark.
“Turns out he was a prettygood person to know,’” Lucyjokes, adding that the recordingprocess for her album happenedquite quickly.
Lucy’s mixture of honest hardwork and wholesome talent hasearned her the support of some ofSouth Africa’s biggest musicnames – backing her for her al-bum launch will be Albert Frost,Schalk Joubert, Mellisa van derSpuy and Kevin Gibson.
They’ll be on stage together onThursday 20 September for Lu-cy’s album launch at MercuryLive. Entrance is R30 at the door.
Also catch Lucy this weekendat the Rolling Stone Weekend.

Thecurtainsareopeningonceagain for the highly success-ful Love Bombs Film Festival.
In early August three local-ly produced short films pre-miered to a sold-out crowd of1 300 movie-goers, over eightdays, at the Labia on Orange,Cape Town. Canteen ownerHarold said: “This is the busi-est I have seen the Labia in 20years.” And so with such highdemand and much excite-ment, the three short films areback for the Love Bombs En-core. On 14 and 15 SeptemberThe Labia on Orange Theatrewill host the Love Bombs oncemore.
The Love Bombs is a projectof the Film Kru, a film and me-dia team at Joshua Genera-tion Church. But these are notthe usual films you would ex-pect a church to make; theLove Bombs are hard hitting,
action-packed and insightfulstories, artfully captured onscreen.
Made by a team of over 300volunteers new to the world offilm-making, these films man-age to deliver a big budgetfeel, with minimal financesand passion as their primaryresource.
Under the guidance of upand coming local film-maker,Howard James Fyvie, theFilm Kru have embarked on aSouth African adventure offun, hard work and qualityfilmmaking.

Leading classical guitarist,James Grace will performhis favourite works at an in-timate recital at Plaisir deMerle Wine Estate on Sun-day 16 September at 17:00.
Grace says patrons shouldexpect a diverse and interest-ing programme with a varietyof different musical styles andsounds. Aside from perform-ing a selection of works fromhis Spanish and Latin albums,he will be debuting some newarrangements of variousBeatles songs.
Grace started guitar lessonsat the age of seven and had anatural affinity for the instru-ment. He believes part of theguitar’s charm is in the inti-mate connection between theinstrument and the player.
“The classical guitar is theonly instrument you actuallyhold against you when youplay it. You can feel how it vi-
brates and resonates when youstrike its strings, and you do sowith the direct contact withthe flesh of your fingers,” saysGrace.
He is currently head of Clas-sical Guitar Studies at UCT.

Yes, it is amazing how time can fly, especially when
you’re having fun! Saying that, it is time to remind you
about our annual Golf Day in aid of the SA Children’s
Home.
The Home takes care of 46 children between the ages 6 and 18
years coming from all communities. The children are placed by the Children’s Court for
an initial period of 2 years. Some of them, however, stays much longer. The Home
receives less than 50% of their required funds from the government. Therefore they

SAREL BURGER
Die komende naweek se program (tuisspaneerste) is: Belhar t Schotsche Kloof/Walmer,Tygerberg t Universiteit Kaapstad, Goodwoodt Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege, Bellville tHelderberg, Collegians t Hands & Heart.
