. From page 1.According to the media liaison officer
for Specialised Law Enforcement Services,Neil Arendse, the word “public” shouldnot be taken out of context.
“If someone masturbates with the cur-tains open and others can see them thenit is indeed against the law. It doesn’t mat-
ter whether he or she is in their ownhouse,” he says.
Arendse makes use of an example: “Let’ssay you start a fire on your property, butthe smoke chokes the neighbours, thenyou are guilty.”
He continues by saying that one could beworking in one’s garden completely na-
ked, but if you are in plain view of childrenthen one is indeed breaking the law.

The case of Thabo Bester (23), also knownas the Facebook rapist, has recently beenpostponed in the Western Cape HighCourt. The last time Bester appeared in May,
the state and Bester’s defence failed toreach an agreement on a plea and sentenc-ing agreement. This time the judge, Andre le Grange,
postponed the case to August 13 to enableBester to consult his lawyer, Susanna Ku-un.Bester was transferred from Leeuwkop
Prison in Johannesburg to the Draken-stein Correctional Centre in the Western
Cape, so Kuun didn’t have enough time totake instructions. In an unrelated case, Bester was sen-
tenced to 50 years in prison for raping androbbing two women. He was sentenced to 15 years in jail on
each count of rape and 15 years on eachcount of robbery. Five years of each rob-bery was suspended.Bester was dubbed the Facebook rapist
as he used the social networking site tolure women to meet him.He would meet with the women after
claiming that international modellingscouts were interested in them. Armed
with a knife, he then raped and robbedthem. He is currently accused of killing 26-
year-old Nomfundo Tyulu in a SunsetBeach guest house. In one of his court appearances he told
the court in mitigation that he had beenraped by his grandmother’s friend whenhe was young, raped several times by aman who promised to look after him, andthat he was gang-raped in prison. He said he had never seen his parents
and that he lived under excruciating con-ditions with his alcoholic grandmotherand grandfather on a farm in Gauteng.

Local police made some inroads intocurbing the recent increase in house-breakings in Table View when they ar-rested a gang of three robbers last week.
The men were caught breaking into ahouse in Stanford Street, Parklands lastWednesday morning at around 11:30.An anonymous tip-off notified police of the
housebreaking. On theirway to the scene po-lice noticed a red VW Jetta parked close by.A man with dreadlocks, wearing a red jer-
sey was sitting in the driver’s seat.As police drove by the Jetta they saw a sec-
ond man coming out of the yard of one of thehouses. After briefly talking to the driver heran into the yard.As the situation looked suspicious the po-
lice turned around for further inspection.Upon entering the property it was clear
that the front door of the house had beenforced open. Police saw two men jumpingover the boundary wall to the property nextdoor.
A discarded radio speaker was also seenlying at the gate. Returning to the Jetta po-lice searched the vehicle and found fourmore speakers, that seemed to be the sameas the one found abandoned. After questioning the driver police were
given a description of his two accomplices. This allowedanotherpatrol vehicle to identi-fy these twomen as they were walking alongSandown Road. When the two men were stopped and
searched police found a gold earring andgold ring on the suspect they identified asone of the burglars seen jumping the wall. After the VW Jetta was searched police
found a collection of stolen goods includinga plasma big screenTV, computer and soundequipment in the boot. The red Jetta was also identified as being
involved in a number of housebreakings inthe area in the recent past. All three suspects are from Crossroads.Table View, Melkbosstrand and Durban-
ville have over the last couple of monthsbeen experiencing a spate of housebreakingsand most concerning – house robberies.

It is projected that the “greeneconomy” in Cape Town will beemploying 12 000 people by 2015,16 000 by 2020 and 20 000 by2025.
Themajority of job opportunitiesare projected to be created throughthe manufacturing of componentsfor the renewable energy sector.Western Cape MEC of finance,
economic development and tour-ism, Alan Winde, revealed this ona visit to a solar power equipmentfactory, AEG Power Solutions, in
Montague Park on Monday. He elaborates: “To create the en-
vironment conducive to thisgrowth, the Western Cape govern-ment establishedGreenCape inNo-vember 2010, a government-funded,industry-led agency taskedwithun-locking the manufacturing and em-ployment potential of the greeneconomy. Green Cape and the pro-vincial government are currentlyin discussion with various stake-holders on the implementation ofsmart energy grids that would ena-ble individual firms and house-holds to install hybrid energy gen-eration systems and feed excesspower into the grid.”On Monday Winde visited three
factories “investing and producingin the green economy space”.A green economy is one whose
growth in income and employmentis driven by public and private in-vestments that reduce carbon emis-sions and pollution, enhance ener-gy and resource efficiency, and pre-vent the loss of biodiversity andecosystem services.According to the Executive De-
velopment Programme SynthesisReport the country must reduce itscarbon footprint in order to grow itstrade, locally and internationally.Winde says that economic growth
puts a strain on the infrastructureand that the country needs to findinnovative and economical ways tobetter manage natural resources.“If we use coal power to produce
an agricultural product in refiningit then it affects our market. Greeneconomy is very, very importantfor the province.“We recently launched the 110
percent Green campaign, a catalystto build a critical mass of activitythat puts the Western Cape well on
the road towards becomingAfrica’sGreen Economic Hub – a key econo-
mic goal of the province,” he explai-ned.

The Cape’s biggest garden centre group iscelebrating 50 years of quality and service.Humble beginnings started the Stodels
Garden Centres which has seen it grow intoamuch loved brand inWestern Cape house-holds.The first Stodels Garden Centre was
planted firmly in Kenilworth, thereafterStodels Bellville was found which is wherethe company’s head office is situated.Milnerton then grew from this in 2005,
with the opening of a Stodels in RacecourseRoad which proved to be a huge successamong the community.Under the reign of Nick Stodel, who took
over the business from his father Robert asmanaging director, the company has blos-somed through his ambition and leader-ship.“We work hard to make sure that we give
our customers great service.Webelieve thata smile andagreeting isn’t hard for any staffmember to give, and allows our customersto have a great experience when visiting. Ithink that our mission statement says it all– ‘To delight our customers by giving themaffordable access to great gardening ideasand service’,” says Nick.An early birthday present saw Stodels re-
ceive an award for Best Garden Centre inthe Western Cape. Their goal of great serv-ice and well priced quality products is whatallows those who want to garden to be ableto afford it.

The Love Bombs Film Festival, currently showing at the LabiaonOrange, opened to an enthusi-astic sold-out crowd of CapeTown movie-goers last Thurs-day.
The highly anticipated film festi-val’s opening night, showcasedthree locally produced short films– including one shot in Du Noon –made by the Film Kru of JoshuaGeneration Church: The SecondDay, iBalaclava and The Prodigal. Each film is hard-hitting andwell
made, and covers a range of genres, from science fiction to action andexperimental drama. The evening was a great success
and the audience were treated fromthe onset, with particular com-ments made on how amazed theywere by the quality and originalityof the films.Movie-goers differed onwhich short film they enjoyedmost.
“I loved iBalaclava! It was stylis-tically verywell shot,” said RaeHu-man.Ashleigh Wainstein said that she
loved the special effects makeup inThe Second Day.The evening began with a short
behind-the-scenes clip, providingviewers with key insight into whatwent on behind the camera, and theresourcefulness of the film makersin producing such quality movies, despite an extremely limited budg-et.
But the real proof is always in thepudding, and all eyes were on thebig screen as the first of the films,The Second Day began to play. The film which runs a mere 17
minutes is an action film that takesviewers to a post-apocalyptic pris-on,where corrupt prison guards en-tertain themselves by placing betson cage-fighting inmates, until anunknownmanmakes hisway to thering. The intensity didnot let up as this
was followed by iBalaclava, a filmshot entirely in the Du Noon infor-mal settlement. The film tells the story of Zolani,
a struggling street vendor, whoturns to crime to provide for hisyounger brother and himself. In a subtle change of theme the fi-
nal film The Prodigal, follows ayoung man as he leaves his father’shousehold in pursuit of love and ac-ceptance.
At a film viewing one might ex-pect the show to end and everyoneto walk out, but this was no ordi-nary night, and the audience werefurther treated to an address by thefilm director, Howard James Fyvie.Fyvie shared in greater detail
about what it meant to be part ofThe Love Bombs project. He shared from his role as direc-
tor in The Second Day, as actor inThe Prodigal and from being in-volved in the production of all threeshort films.“No one who is here tonight, is
here by coincidence; it is a LoveBomb incident,” he said. For more information or to buy
tickets, visit the The Love Bombswebsite at www.lovebombs.co.za orjoin the Facebook Page at www.fa-cebook.com/lovebombsfilms. TheLove Bombs Film Festival is show-ing at The Labia on Orange until to-morrow 9 August.

With a name as exotic as KimiteCancino it is almost safe to as-sume that this vibrant teenageris destined to become the famousauthor she dreams of becoming.
The budding 16-year-old writerfrom Milnerton received the firstcopy of her debut published novelthree weeks ago.“I was sleeping when I heard mymom shout my name. When I cameinto the room I saw her showingsomething to my cousin, Chad. Ihad to peek around her to see whatit was. I was so excited. It was kindof weird to look at my own face onmy book,” the bubbly teenagersays. Her book Toxic Persuaded Love:
Under the Influence is a journey oflove and passion in the spirit world.“When I sent a description of thebook to the publisher, Xlibris, theysaid it was different then the nor-mal boy meets girl story. It’s alongthe same lines as Vampire Diaries, but plays out in the spiritualworld,” says Kimite a Grade 10learner at Unity Christian Collegein Bothasig. The story centres around Sacha,a troubled teenagerwho is easily in-fluenced and needs direction in herlife. After dying Sacha goes on tothe spirit world, where she be-friends a group of intriguing char-acters, including Kazz, a popularblonde, and the identical twins –good-natured Trayce and the devi-ous Chace. Sacha is tasked to ac-complish seven steps, as set out by
her grandmother, in orderto reach her ultimate goalsthat are also still a mysteryto her. In her quest to ac-complish these steps anddiscover her true self Sachahas to contend with love, se-duction, betrayal, anger andmystery along her journeyof discovery and pain. Willshe be strong enough to copewith hermission in the spir-it world, when she had notbeen able to cope on earth?Although only 15 at thetime of writing the book,Kimite or Kimmy as herfriends call her, has not lether lack of life experiencelimit her creativity.“The main character ofSacha is actually based onmy older sister, Sacha-Lee.She’s 21 and a real party ani-mal, wild,” Kimmy sayswith a smile.“I’ve nagged my sister totake me to parties just sothat I can observe how teen-agers act in those situations. At onehouse party I remembered the roomfilled with tobacco smoke, smellingthe alcohol,” she says with a know-ing look. She says atmosphericscenes she has seen inmovies, havealso been saved to memory and isused to colour in her stories withdescriptive detail.Although she is still innocent inthe ways of love, this did not stopthe young writer from includingsome steamy scenes in the 267-pagebook that took her six months towrite.
“Some of the material reads as ifit was written by a 35-year-old,”Kimmy’s mom Michelle says. She is very proud of her daugh-ter’s accomplishment.“She is such a creative person. Inbetween the writing she is alsolearning to play the guitar and per-forms with a local band MidnightSpecial. She is also very much intophotography and took the pictureand designed the cover of her bookherself,” Michelle boasts addingthat Kimmy could roller skate atthe tender age of one.
“She also makes movies with herwebcam and edits themherself. Shehas a couple of videos on YouTubeand a couple of short stories onWhattpad,” Michelle continues. It is not only with being creativethat Kimmy takes the lead.“I believe in tough love when itcomes to my children. If they cometome and say theywant to do some-thing, I tell them to find a way to doit themselves,” Michelle says.Kimmy found the American pub-lisher of her novel after seeing anadvertisement on Facebook. After
agreeing to help her publishher book, Kimmy had tocome up with R12 000.Her mother paid half butKimmy worked 12-hourshifts as manager at a localpizza shop and also didsome part-time modellingto realise her dream of be-coming published.“There were eveningswhen I had to massage herfeet because they were sosore,” Michelle recalls. This book is, however, on-ly the start.“It is the first of a six-bookseries and I want to finishall of them by the time I am21. I am already busy writ-ing the second one. I al-ready have the titles andcovers of each of the bookschosen and I know how thestory is going to end,” Kim-my rattles off enthusiasti-cally.“I can’t wait to sign myfirst book when someone
comes up to me in the shop for myautograph,” she says with a biggrin. In the meantime she is saving upfor a laptop. “Then I can movearound and write whenever the in-spiration hits me.”Kimmy has read her book 10times from cover to cover and iscurrently in the process of readingit out loud to her mom.“I have never read it, not even be-fore she sent it to the publisher, Iwanted her to do it all by herself,”Michelle says.

WISHING ALL OUR MUSLIM CLIENTS WELL OVER THE MONTH OF RAMADAAN
As a result of a slowing in the registrationprocess of the Animal Bylaw 2010, the origi-nal deadline has been extended from 31 Julyfor registering extra animals to 31 August.
In order to prevent any further confusionand misperception arising, the final dead-line for the entire process has been changedto 30 September.
Instead of applying for an annual dog li-cence, the process requires pet owners toregister all cats and dogs kept on their prop-erty at no cost.
Additional animals not registered before
31 August will result in a fine. Owners of ani-mals without a chip, name tag or tattoo tobe identified will also be fined.
However, applications completed afterthis date will not be denied without reasonbut will be looked into upon inspection.
This is necessary to obtain accurate infor-mation of the domestic population in CapeTown where failure to comply will result ina R300 fine or animals being impounded.
Owners are encouraged to update theirpets details with regard to pet deaths andnew pets as this occurs.
Pet registration is delayed

SLICE OF LIFESLICE OF LIFE
seerkry is...eijsh!

Miskien red hierdie skrywe dalk ’n kindse lewe.ANONIEME-pos

Talented players from across thenorthern suburbs are coming togeth-er to create a feast of musical enter-tainment.
Legend Productions is busy with re-hearsals for King Saul, a musical feast. The production will be on at the Bel-
lville Civic Theatre from Thursday 30August until Sunday 2 September witha matinee on the Saturday.Director Sean Dryden describes the
production as “a musical with two con-certs”.Sean explains that the musical tells
the story ofKingSaul of Israelwho turns
his back on God, but with a twist.“The only guy who seems to calm him
down, is David,” Sean says.He says in the story, the king suffers
intense jealousy and goes crazy. His ad-visors consult the Witch of Endor whosuggests bringing the likes of MarilynMonroe and Elvis from the future for aconcert.“Although there’s all the glamour, it
doesn’t help the king,” Sean says.Act two startswithDavid, andhis abil-
ity to calm the king down leads to anoth-er concert, this one with big local nameslike Ivan Siegelaar. This is inspirational for the king, but
makes the witch unhappy. In between there is a war scene, and
the production ends with David becom-ing king.“There’s a lot of entertainment,”
Dryden says, adding: “It’s going to speakto different audiences.”Legend Productions is a local organi-

“I can’t wait to show you the cabochon!”says the woman with wonder in her eyes.
“The what?” I ask.She speaks a little slower this time: “The ca-
bo-chon!”“Ohhh! The cabochon! What’s a cabochon?”The secretary of the Cape Town Gem and
Mineral Club, Jo Wicht, carefully explainswhat it is, but all the other “stones” are doingtheir best to distract me.
Shiny, colourful and fascinating gems suchas tanzanite, ajoite, and verdite shine natural-ly in the soft sunlight.
For the layman, however, it doesn’t matterwhat the objects are called or how they cameto be.
Jo’s words, interesting as they were, couldnot compete with the jaw-dropping exhibitionin Bothasig on Saturday.
Onceamonth the clubmembers get togetherat the clubhouse with the aim to raise aware-ness and sell some of the items to gawking in-dividuals.
It is the only club of its kind in Cape Townand members come from as far as Montagueand the Northern Cape.
“It’s a hobby club for people who like miner-al specimens, gemstones, cabochons (polishedstones), and crystals. We have three machinesin here which members can use to cut gem-stones after they do the preliminary course,”she explains adding that members can go onorganised field trips and listen to interesting
talks. The multiple benefits of joining the club
should be reason enough to get on board, butthe appreciation one gets from working withgeological marvels is the main drawcard.
When walking through the meticulous ex-hibits and observing the proud looks on peo-ple’s faces, it becomes clear that every singleone shares a passion for these stones.
“I never even knew the club existed, so Ionly joined about 10 years ago. I knew no-thing when I started, so you gain the know-ledge as you go along,” she concludes.
An open day is held at the clubhouse inGoede Hoop Street, Bothasig, every first Sa-turday of the month. For further informati-on email Jo at [email protected].

South Africa’s own rock musical,Rockville 2069, will be launchedthismonth, featuringaTableViewlocal, Michael Naranjo.
Rockville 2069 is the creative brain-child of composer Johnny Ray; thescript and lyrics were written by Rayand Bruno Paiola. The fully orchestrated production
sees over 60 artists and musiciansfrom different cultural and musicalbackgrounds collaborating to bring anew, sometimes discordant, alwaysthrilling voice to the rock musicalscene. The result is an emotionallysoaring journey of caution, hope, op-timism, rebellion and joy. It’s a lyri-cal rollercoaster ride you’ll want totake again and again.Ray both wrote the music and co-
arranged it alongwithKyle Peterson. It was adapted and scored by DarrylAndrews. An album, featuring 22 tracks, is al-
so being released in September to gohand in hand with the production.Adding to the all round experience, a40-page graphic novel, complement-
ing the sound-track will also bereleased. Some of the big
names involved inthe project in-clude Kevin Gib-son, Tony Cox,Dave Ferguson,Beverly Scott-Brown and anoth-er northern sub-urbs local, NeilPotgieter.While Michael
is currentlybasedin Johannesburg, his roots are in Ta-ble View, having fronted both SevenDay Story, who performed the themesong “Going nowhere slowly”, for thetelevision programme with the samename, as well as his current project,One Day Remains.“About a year and a half ago I was
approached by JohnnyRay to sing onthe production,” Michael explains. “Idid studio time in Pretoria withFloors and was very excited to get acall back from Johnny where he told
me the show will bepresented on a livestage,” he says.He adds: “I think this
production is exponen-tially bigger than whatwas anticipated and Iam very proud and ex-cited to be a part of it.We have incredible tal-ent in this country.”The concert and CD

“If you do what others don’t,you’ll get what others won’t”.That is thephilosophyof 17-year-old up-and-coming golf star IanSnyman.
Ian, who attends Bellville HighSchool, first picked up a club at thetender age of three.“I remember Iwas eightwhenmy
dad took me for my first golf lessonand the following year I entered thePaarl Junior Classic at Boschen-meer.“It was very special to win the
first tournament I ever entered. Iwas always fond of the sport and at14 I decided this is what I wanted to
do. I want to be a professional golf-er.”Paul Mackenzie has had a mas-
sive impact in the past five yearshe’s been working with Ian.“Coach Paul has helped me tre-
mendously – not only with gettingmy swing where it needs to be, butto be mentally fit as well.“Over the past few years my
swing has become much more con-sistent and it is very rewarding tosee the results of our hard work onthe course.”Ian has represented Western
Province golf on every level. Heplayed u-12, u-14, u-16, u-19, u-23 andmade the senior team. This impressive resumé caught
the eye of scouts for the Ernie ElsFoundation of which Ian has beena part for two and a half years. Onlythe proverbial cream of the crop getselected to represent the Ernie ElsFoundation.Playing on the world stage can be
an intimidating experience, butsome relish the opportunity to gohead toheadwith theworld’s finest.“It was a great experience to rep-
resent our country last year at theWorld Junior Championships in It-aly. South Africa finished third inthe team competition and individu-ally I finished 17th out of 100 golf-ers.”Earlier this year in June, Japan
hosted the Junior u-19 World Cupwhere 13 countries each enteredfour players. Although the team on-ly managed to secure 11th spot, theexperience gained will be invalua-ble in future competitions.“I have never played courses so
well manicured, the greens and
fairways are immaculate. It was al-so an eye-opener to see howwell theguys putt, it made me realise thatI need to work even harder with theflat stick.”Having been asked who is his fa-
vourite golfer of all-time, the an-swerwas an emphatic: “ErnieEls!”.Ian’s dream fourball would consistof Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, BubbaWatson and Gary Player.“My dream is to be number one
in the world some day, but firstthings first. After matric I willstudy to get something behind myname. I’m not sure what I want tostudy yet, but it’s important for meto have a proper education. Once Ihave that, it is all systems go andchase my dream of golf stardom.”
