Although local officials indicate that the situation regarding the Du Noon clinic is back to normal after its closure two weeks ago, residents still queue at Albow Gardens Clin- ic. Tempers flared in the informal settlement over the last couple of weeks after the local clinic was closed. The closure follows intimidation tactics by the local health commit- tee. Made up of local residents, the committee and some other resi- dents have been protesting against the dismal state of the clinic. The fainting of a nurse at the clin- ic in January this year, illustrated the lack of sufficient ventilation in a building where patients, many suffering from tuberculosis, are forced to queue for medical atten- tion. With the clinic closing, the city put steps into place to allow Du Noon residents to visit the clinics in Table View and Albow Gardens, Rugby. The influx of additional patients at Albow Gardens Clinic has made it even busier than usual, while tak- ing its toll on awaiting patients. TygerBurger went to the clinic in Rugby yesterday morning where several Du Noon patients were still waiting for help. One of these people, the wheel- chair bound 88-year-old Nelson Joya, had to pay someone to bring him to the clinic. According to him he waited sev- eral hours before eventually being helped. TygerBurger spoke to five other waiting patients from Du Noon who were all apparently unaware that the Du Noon Clinic has reopened. “We have been waiting since 06:00 this morning to be helped,” said a woman sitting in the waiting room teeming with people. Transport from Du Noon was ap- parently organised for some, while others had to make use of taxis. One nurse who wished to remain anonymous said they have been particularly busy during the clo- sure of the Du Noon Clinic but she insisted that they were never undu- ly swamped and coped fairly well. According to a local ward coun- cillor and chairperson of the city’s health portfolio committee, Cyn- thia Clayton, everything is howev- er back to normal following recent public meetings. “The Du Noon Clinic has been opened again and due to the small size of the clinic we have also made available a warehouse that will treat patients with illnesses like TB and HIV/Aids. “Mother and child medical serv- ices will still be offered at Table View Clinic. So we are separating the sick from the healthy,” she ex- plained. She added that the city has also provided transport for these patients to Table View. Clayton was adamant that there was no need for Du Noon residents to travel to Albow Gardens. The Western Cape department of health will start construction on a new R76 million clinic in Racing Park, Killarney Gardens in Septem- ber. This clinic is set to open at the end of next year. A “massive blow” was dealt to the WesternCapedrug tradeaccording toprovincial policespokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel AndrèTraut.
He said this after Milnerton police confis-cated about 18kg or R5 million worth of tik andR80 000 in cash out of a Van Riebeecks Courtflat on Sunday.
As a result, the 40-year-old Nigerian suspectand his 31-year-old South African wife werearrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
Traut elaborates: “Milnerton police fol-
lowed up on information gathered over a peri-od of time and approached the flat of the sus-pect, which is situated in Knysna Road.”
Traut also warned dealers that this type ofcrime is very high on the police’s priority list, before concluding: “We regard this seizure asa massive blow to the Western Cape drugtrade, and we are pleased with the outcomeof our operation.”
The suspects appeared in a Cape Town courton Tuesday, but the outcome could not be con-firmed before going to print.

Sheer determination paid off for Nosi-phoSheilaMdini, a42-year-olddomes-tic worker from Boston, when she re-ceived her National Diploma in Hu-man Resource Management last week.
“Since I was little, I told myself I want-ed to be a graduate,” says Sheila. Thisdream had to be put on hold when she fellpregnant in 1987, at the age of 17. As shehad a child to bring up, Sheila could notcomplete matric, but the dream persisted.
In 2004 Sheila completed a computercourse and in the following year, she reg-istered as a part-time student at the CapePeninsula University of Technology.
This go-getter paid for her studies withher salary and when she received her di-ploma last week, her studies were paid infull.
“It wasn’t easy,”Sheila says. “After Icompleted the sec-ond year, I wanted toquit, because it wastoo much for me.”Sheila had five sub-jects in her first yearand four in the sec-ond year and with afull-time job, shemerely didn’t haveenough time to jug-gle everything.
Sheila persisted, however. Mondaysto Thursdays shewent to class be-tween 17:20 and 19:20and still had to findthe time to study fortests and exams, butshe managed it.
Despite being busybetween work andstudies, Sheila madetime for love too andin 2007 she marriedMxolisi Dala.
During examsthough, she tooktime off to study.
Her employer ofthe past 12 years,Carin Human, isvery proud of Sheila.
“She is a real inspiration,” she says.About her choice of career Sheila says:
“I want to work in human resources. Itis such a broad field and I like to talk. Iam a people’s person,” she says.
Sheila’s only daughter, Philiswa (21) isrepeating Grade 12 this year, to obtain abetter result for university exemption.“My daughter says I am an encourage-ment,” says Sheila.
While Sheila was studying towards herdegree, Communication 1 was added asan additional subject to the diploma, which meant Sheila had to study an addi-tional year, in which she completed thatone last subject.
Although she cannot wait to work inher field, Sheila’s set on doing it right. “Ido want to work in human resources, butI will only leave my current job once Ihave found another position,” she says.

Volgens haar was die twee by ’n partytjie

Defenceive driving: With about700 000 accidents happening on South African roads a year, it is hardly newsworthywhen someone loses control of their vehicle and comes to a standstill on someone’slawn. It is perhaps more educational to follow Milnerton’s Johannes Koering’s example and carry a camera at all times. He drovepast this accident scene last week Thursday and decided to capture someone’s inevitable embarrassment and share it withreaders. Thankfully, no one was injured inthis incident. Inwoners by Huis Zonnekus kan nie wagvir hul drie-weeklikse brakkiebesoeknie.
Paw Pals se koördineerder, Juleen du Toit, gebruik sedert 2001 haar eie honde vir meeras net sekuriteit of kameraadskap.

The forgery of bank documentsto secure rental housing con-tracts beyond the financialmeans of the perpetrators has be-come a growing tendency in theTable View area.
The Table View Police’s fraudunit is currently investigating twosuch cases.
“Theyget thebank letterheadandthen fabricate a balance sheet with
a false account number. The docu-ments are filled in with figures thatqualify them for the renting of largeproperties,” explained policespokesperson Lieutenant ElizabethMunro.
The two cases under investiga-tion involve houses in West Beachwith a monthly rental of betweenR5 000 and R10 000.
Munro says the fraudsters alsoforge their salary slips and appearabove board when doing ITC creditchecks.
“They move into the properties, pay a deposit and rent for the firsttwo months and then they stop,”Munro explained.
One man was arrested on chargesof forgery and fraud in connectionwith this practice two weeks ago.
According to investigating offic-er, Detective Constable DesmondNovember, several similar casesare under investigation.
Once these individuals occupy aproperty they cannot be evictedwithout following a lengthy legal
process.“According to the Prevention of
Illegal Eviction From and UnlawfulOccupation of Land Act (PIE) an un-lawful occupier can only be evictedby the Sheriff of the Court once aneviction notice has been obtainedfrom the court,” says Munro.
She says any action by a disgrun-tled property owner such as cuttingoff the electricity or running waterto force the unlawful tenants out, isconsidered an act of eviction interms of the law and would put the
property owner in the wrong.“A desperate property owner in
Parklands had new tenants move inon top of the tenants that were ille-gally occupying his property. Sub-sequently a charge of illegal evic-tion was laid against the new ten-ants,” Munro said.
Property owners and home rentalagencies are warned to look out forthese fraudulent documents.
“It’s as simple as phoning thebank as the bank account usuallydoes not exist,” Munro advised.

Some might consider it fun to run andclimb up Table Mountain several timesa day, but this wasn’t the only reason 100athletes participated in the K-Way Plat-teklip Charity Challenge (KPCC) on Sat-urday.
The fourth KPCC was, in fact, more aboutraising R500 000 for Joe Slovo Park’s Sinen-jongo High School.
Through several sponsors the target wasmet and finally exceeded by R20 000.
Competitors climbed to the top of the
mountain via Platteklip Gorge, descendedvia Table Mountain Cableway and raced tothe start to begin another excruciating and“satisfying” lap. They needed to completethe 5,5km loop as many times as possible be-tween 07:00 and 18:00.
The winner, André Calitz, broke tworecords in his repetitive forays up and downthe mountain.
It took him 34 minutes to race from thelower cable station to Platteklip Gorge andthen, perhaps more noteworthy, he reachedthe summit 11 times in 11 hours!
to a lingering feeling of stiffness.“But it wasn’t about me or the other
competitors, but rather about givingsomething back. It is nice to race fora noble cause!” he emphasised.
Calitz said that the organising ofthe race was the best he’s ever seen.
“It was amazing! To get all that wa-ter up the mountain and get preferen-tial treatment over the tourists whenit came to coming down in the cablecar takes some doing. There was alsofood like muffins and sandwicheswhich kept us going. So much couldhave gone wrong, but nothing everdid,” adds Calitz.
Table Mountain Cableway provid-ed all participants and race officialswith free access to the cableway andthere was “minimal disruption” totheir normal operations.
One of the organisers, Anton deWaal, said he was very happy withhow the event turned out.
He also participated and describedit as a “good day out”.
“There were a lot of other events inwhich the participants could com-pete, but they chose this one becauseit’s a charity drive,” he elaborated, be-fore adding that every single personwho helped that day were all volun-teers.
The 130 participants managed to getcompanies and individuals to sponsorthem per lap, and all the money raisedwas handed over to the NPO, MarconiBeam Trust, which will in turn use itto help Sinenjongo High School.

En ja, die sêding “charity begins at ho-me” is inderdaad waar.

Last week I was taking a walk toCentury City in Canal Walk and asI approached the entrance that fac-es the new hotel overlooking theshort bridge I saw two young chil-dren lying next to the water canalindulging in sexual intercourse. Itwas disturbing to see.
Firstly, because they were bothunder 14 years of age. The boy was13 and the girl even younger thanthat! I decided to walk next to themand confront them but I realisedthat this was a matter the parentsshould address. Unfortunately Icould not get hold of their parents.
My concern is that parents dropoff their children to hang out at Ca-nal Walk, totally unsupervised.
It’s one thing if the children weremore aware of what they are doing, but it’s another to see clearly howunderage they were. This was in-deed disturbing to see. So I contact-ed my friend and she advised me tocall the newspapers and state thisstory as a matter of urgency.
Parents must be aware what theirchildren could get up to while hang-ing out at the shopping centres.

We often hear that the police do not haveenough vehicle resources to get to every-thing. Interesting because I’ve been visit-ing my friend in Kraaifontein Friday, Sat-urday and Sunday and on all three daystwo police vans were standing in twoyards opposite each other near the Palms. This is now in the evening and rightthrougout the day. So maybe the officersare off but surely these vans should be attheir stations? Would love to hear whatthe explanation for this is.

WO Erica Crous, Brackenfell policespokesperson, responds: The Bracken-fell police urge residents to report such inci-dents as above but to please provide the spe-cific police station the car is from, (and reg-istration number), which will be indicatedon the side of the car.
Police members from across the peninsu-la live in the area and it would be easierto investigate such matters if they can de-termine where the vehicle is from. In cer-tain cases officers have authorisation totake a vehicle home in case they need it ear-ly the next morning.
Not enough cop cars, then?

Here’s the really weird part: you already know what we’re going to tell you. You already know that in order to live well later, you need to dosomething now. You also know that if you don’t, chances are you’ll be short of cash at a time in your life when you need it most. But, despitethis, people still do nothing about it.
If you’d like to be the smart exception to the rule, then the brilliant news is that The Classic 5 Investment Collection provides you with thesimplest and easiest way to achieve your long-term financial goals. This stellar collection of five hand-picked unit trusts is designed to deliverreturns you never dreamed possible. And yes, the sooner you start the better it gets. Even setting aside a small amount now can mean bigpayouts, thanks to the power of compounding over time.
And if you’re feeling commitment anxiety, don’t!
• Unit trusts do not lock you in.• You can get access to your money in one day – without penalties.• You can miss monthly payments. Also, no penalties.• And no upfront admin fees, so your money works from day one.
So, before you turn the page, consider how pleased you’ll be with a really big chunkof cash in the future and at the same time, how irritated you’ll feel if you look backand say, “coulda, woulda, shoulda”.
