Retail therapy is supposed to be “shoppingwith the primary purpose of improving thebuyer’s mood or disposition.” Actually it isa psychological disorder called “oniomania”or “compulsive shopping disorder”, accord-ing to researchers at Melbourne Universityin Australia. Some idea of theseriousness of the conditioncan be gauged from a 2001study by the European Unionwhich found that 33 % of shop-pers have “a high level of ad-diction to rash or unnecessaryconsumption”. Further evi-dence of the affliction can beseen in the increasing inci-dence of obesity which also re-sults from “rash or unneces-sary consumption”. The chal-lenge for the retail industry isto find ways to increase thenumber of oniomanicas and tomake sure they are not cured. To do this the managers of supermarkets
have devised a number of ways to keep shop-pers in the store and exposed to temptation. The favourite trick is to put the newest,
slowest cashiers on the express tills to frus-trate those healthy customers purchasing 10items or less. Shoppers in a hurry have al-ready learned that it is better to join the trol-ley-pushers in the long queues because theymove faster through more tills manned bymore efficient staff. But it is a trap set forthose suffering from compulsive shoppingdisorder. Store managers know that the
main impulse purchases are sweets, chips, soft drinks, chocolates and magazines. Theyhave also noticed that smart shoppers likewomen with small children know how toavoid the aisles where these tempting good-ies are on display.
So, to deal with the onioma-niacs and take revenge on thesmart shoppers, they have cre-ated, in the name of improvedservice, a new system whichfunnels customers through asingle queue towards a batteryof tills regulated by a ghostvoice which announces “TellerNo 27” or whatever. The sys-tem produces nice long queuesand the stores take advantageby lining the route withshelves stacked with sweets, cool drinks, chips, chocolates(the imported, high-mark-upkinds), nuts and other tempt-
ing treats you avoided in the store. Pity theyoung mother trying to drag two screamingpre-schoolers through this valley of tempta-tion! In a state of acute embarrassment, shereally has no option but to bribe the littlemonsters with sweet things. And so the young are corrupted while the
resolve of those on diet is sabotaged and thehealth of the nation is undermined. Is it anywonder that the world has an obesity prob-lem? But, hey, the disease is good for the bot-tom line and what could be more importantthan that?
Big people better fora store’s bottom line

sacrifice for me, but it was as if I heard God say,I need to take you out of your comfort zone.”She says since her return she experienced a
new zeal for life and new enthusiasm for herworkwith theCEF.Herwork in theKalkfonteincommunity teaching children God’s word liesclose to her heart. In addition to herworkwith children in Kalk-
fontein, she also devotes her time to the GoodNews Club, run by the Kuils River ChristianFellowship Assemblies of God, school minis-tries and creche ministries.“What I do in a school ministry is to start
praying with the children, teach them the wordand play Bible games with them, for me to seeif they understood the message.” Her passionwas and still is, toworkwith children. “I believeGod has called me to do this.”There is a need, she says to train more people
in children’s ministry and Cirsten can be con-tacted to train people interested in the field. Cri-teria she says for those interested are: “Theymust serve God, must have a passion to workwith children and must have a way of speakingto children.”For her, the work for which she receives no
financial stipend is as rewarding as ever. Peoplecan contact her for ministry opportunities, where she can come out and offer her servicesto childcare facilities, or schools. She thanked Kobus Viljoen director from

While walking through the rowsof toys at the TheoMarais SportsComplex in Milnerton on Satur-day, itwaseasy to imagine the in-nocent dolls studying the peoplepassing by.
Then, when no-one is within ear-shot, the model cars would rev theirengines and the tiny plastic men on
the intricately designed plastic dis-play world would stretch theirbacks and promptly return to theirdefault position to avoid suspicion.
All this plays out in the imagina-tion, of course.
Or does it?When TygerBurger’s journalist
walked past the giant Bismarckboat model, the rows of guns movedwith him...
He turned his head in disbelief
and then the propeller started whiz-zing alarmingly.
The startled journalist tried to actnonchalant while he leapt back inhorror.

Isn’t that, after all, what theseconventions are all about?
Getting in touch with one’s innerchild?
The Cape Model and Toy clubmembers insist it is more about col-lecting those toys that leave today’sadults reminiscent of a bygone era– a less hurried time.
Present-day children sometimesstare in fascination at the thingstheir parents did when they wereyoung, and even sometimes desiresomething they never knew.
There were indeed children at theannual Spring Fair on Saturday, but their wide eyes were for oncematched by their adult peers.TygerBurger is told that the club
is “trying to get as much exposureas possible to the Toy Shows so asto grow the hobby and to encouragethe younger generation to takepart”, but perhaps it gives them anexcuse to show off their toys to like-minded adults.
Members buy and sell varioustypes of die-cast toys, train sets, slotcars, plastic kits and all manner ofcollectable toys.
The club has between 160 and 170members.

Kontak Bruintjies by 074 347 4928.

terug.
Waar daar ’n wil is, is daar ’n weg.PATRYS PIENAARBrackenfell
Personeelverdien lofEk was bevoorreg om deur die verkeers-departement uitgenooi te word na hul uit-reik-geleentheid by die Alta du Toit-na-sorgsentrum.Oppad soontoehet ekgewonderhoeveel
Durbanville is my dorp al vir meer as 30
Daarword “uitreik-aksies” gehou, geld in-
Die Ameri-kaners het ’n uitdrukking “Nimb” oftewel“not in my backyard”.

Is it your house? Your car? Your pension fund oryour share portfolio? It’s none of these really.Your most valuable asset is you and your ability to earn an income during your working career. But have you ever stopped to think about what would happen if you suddenly lost your abilityto earn an income, and you could no longer work because you were disabled, whether it wastemporary or permanent? How would you pay your bond, school fees, groceries, car instalments? How would you maintain your lifestyle if your income was reduced or stopped completely?
How can youprotect your income? Many South Africans protect their families and their
assets with life cover, but don’t protect themselves
and their lifestyles against cancer or a heart attack.
But with GREENLIGHT Disability Cover from

waaraan skryf jy dit toe?“Ek is baie, baie dankbaar vir my gehoor.
sodoende nuwe aanhangers bygekry.
gebeur, soos verlede Saterdag waar ek voor’n buiteluggehoor gesing het, voel dit altydvir my asof daar ’n magiese element teen-
woordig is.
daan?
Myma was ’n ge-
liefde vir Afrikaans was my onge-looflike onderwysers. Op Jan vanRiebeeck was mnr. Henning Sny-man en mnr. O.E. Driesse my Afri-kaansonderwysers. ’n Mens konnie vir meer vra nie. Ek was ingraad 10 toe mnr.
. Kaartjies vir die konsert wissel vanR110 tot R160. Dit is beskikbaar bywww.cul-tivaria.com of by 021 872 9754.Konsertgangers word aangeraai om ten
bring.Parkering vir die konsert is beskikbaar.

cludes plans for hospitals andpublic institu-tions to adopt its recipes and healthier eat-ing guidelines.Mungal-Singh says that this new initia-
tive is the first of its kind.“We’ve launched many initiatives over
the years but never one quite like Cookingfrom the heart,” she added. The unique book contains popular budg-
et-friendly recipes which have been submit-ted by ordinary South Africans with ahealthy twist from medical and nutritionalexperts by cutting salt, sugar, fat and addinga nutritional boost.Mariska Fouche, public affairs manager

A cellar worker of De Grendelwine estate in the Durbanvillewine valley has been chosen asSouth Africa’s Cellar Worker ofthe Year.
“I competed against the best cel-lar workers in South Africa, wor-ked hard and studied even harder. All these things make me proud ofthis award,” said Joseph Phiri,South Africa’s Cellar Worker of theYear.According to Phiri his eagerness
to learn, seven years of cellar wor-king experience in the wine indus-try, along with his enthusiasm forhis work, were major contributingfactors towards his success in thecompetition. The SA CellarWorker of the Year
Programme, which is funded byWi-ne Cellars South Africa and Wine-tech, aims to recognise all perma-nent cellar workers in South Afri-ca’s wine industry. The intention of the project is to
create role models for cellar wor-kers, thus improving productivity, encouraging healthy relationships, transferring knowledge and promo-ting training. There were 102 participants in
the first round of the 2012 program-me, of which 34 went through to thesecond round. After delivering a presentation to
a panel, 20 cellar workers were cho-sen to move on to round three. The three finalists were chosen
from this group following an inten-
sive wine tasting. Gladys Jafta ofVergelegen and Gerrie Grootboomof Roodezant Wines were includedin the top three, along with Phiri.“The competition has so many le-
vels: a written exam, a presentationand a wine tasting,” explained Jo-seph.“I concentrated on the wine tast-
ing in particular, because my years
of experience at De Grendel hadprepared me sufficiently in theother areas.“We tasted wine every morning
in preparation for this competition. As we don’t have defective wineshere, we made a few examples our-selves – with too much sugar, acidi-ty or water. We even left a glass ofwine outside to oxidise, just so that
I could identify a defective wine!”Joseph found his presentation
with the title “The costs of makingwine and the factors that influenceit” the most demanding aspect ofthe competition.According to Charles Hopkins,
cellar master at De Grendel, thisaward is significant because of thewinemakers’ responsibility regar-
ding the training and equipping ofworkers within the cellar.“It makes us proud to say the Cel-
larWorker of the Yearworks for us.We feel we have achieved some-thing significant.“Joseph has travelled a long road
withme and has grown in leaps andbounds from the inexperiencedworker I met seven years ago.“He is curious about everything
and isn’t afraid to ask questions, particularly about the cellar andour wines. The fact that we shareeverything with him prepared himwell for the competition,” Hopkinssaid.Chairman of the Durbanville Wi-
ne Valley Association and cellarmaster at Diemersdal wine estate,Thys Louw, says this award is a fea-ther in the cap of Durbanville as awine region and a suitable rewardfor the time and effort invested inthe area’s cellar workers.Phiri’s advice to other cellar wor-
kers to improve their skills is sim-ple.“Make the most of the opportuni-
ties that come yourway every day,”he advises.Phiri alsoworks in the storeroom
and tasting room over weekends.“I enjoymarketing wine, because
I am a sociable person. I love mee-ting new people and starting inte-resting conversations.“If there’s one area where I’d like
to develop more skills, it’s in salesand marketing,” said this verydriven young man.

The Childhood Cancer Foundation of SouthAfrica (CHOC), is creating awareness dur-ing September as Childhood Cancer Aware-ness Month. This will be done by implementing pro-
grammes throughout the Western Cape, working closelywithandproviding supportto Red CrossWarMemorial Children’s Hos-pital, Tygerberg Children’s Hospital andGroote Schuur Hospital.A study done by Tygerberg Hospital,
found that a large numbe of childrenwithintheWesternCape are either undiagnosed ordiagnosed when the cancer has already ad-vanced.However, if a diagnosis is done early, be-
tween 70 % and 85 % of children can becured. This has given CHOC the opportunity to
establish a campaignwhich targets commu-nities, schools and clinics throughout theWestern Cape aimed at raising awarenessand increase diagnoses.CHOC Westen Cape has provided facili-
ties as a “home away from home” for fami-lies who are disadvantaged and who travela long distance for treatment. The CHOC Lodge Tygerberg offers assist-
ance to families receiving treatment at theTygerburger Children’s Hospital, while theCHOC House Plumstead takes in familiesfrom Red Cross War Memorial Children’sHospital includingGroote SchuurHospital. They provide care to children by making
the wards more child-friendly and theyhave a dedicated volunteer programmeaimed at empowering the children whilethey are in the hospital receiving treat-ment.As the majority of the children are from
disadvantaged backgrounds, CHOC West-ern Cape also provides practical and nutri-tional support such as food, clothing, toilet-ries and funding for transport to the chil-dren aswell as their families, to ensure thatno child abandons treatment. The paediatric oncology units at both Red
Cross War Memorial and Tygerberg Chil-dren’s Hospital diagnose at least 220 chil-dren with cancer each year.

usual pressured method of going instudio and recording all at once andare instead recording bit by bit asthey write new music.“Everything gets done anyway,
it’s just in a more relaxed atmos-phere,” Wynand says.Francois van Coke, the band’s
frontman, interjects: “At least weare being creative and writingagain.”Francois andWynand, originally
from Fokofpolisikar, are often de-scribed as pioneers of the local “Bel-lvilleRockCity” culture, a title theyboth feel honoured to carry.“Growingup inBellville, wewere
bored,” Francois says, explainingthat music was his outlet. Despite
having moved out of the area, thegroups the two have been in havealways been strongly connected toBellville.“We were seen as the guys from
Bellville,” Francois says.“The first CD talks about subur-
bia,” Wynand says of Fokof-polisiekar’s first album, As Jy MetVuur Speel Sal Jy Brand. When asked about their favourite
acts to comeout of thenorthern sub-urbs, the boys point out aKing,Heu-wels Fantasties, Ashtray Electricand Jack Parow, but admit that it’shard to keep up with the endlessbands popping up.A huge portion of those bands
come fromBellville, or more specif-ically, DF Malan High School.Francois says he thinks this has
something to do with them having
a culture that allows for music atthe school.“It feels like they support it a bit
more,” Wynand adds.Wynand, Francois and guitarist,
Jedd Kossew, will be playing someof Van Coke Kartel’s most wellknown songs along with a 65-pieceorchestra at Symphonic Rocks atthe Grand Arena on Saturday 29September.The setting unfortunately doesn’t
allow for drummer, Jason Oosthui-zen, to be in on the action.Tickets for the show cost between
R200 and R225 and are availablethrough Computicket.
.Van Coke Kartel gave us a tasteof their performance at SymphonicRocks on the “Orange Couch”.Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to

El Shaddai Christian School in Durban-ville,with a total of 70 high school girls,40 of whom play hockey, is celebratingtheir two recently announced u-18ASouth African players, Beatrix West-dyk and Tarryn Glasby.
The two girls have been coached at ElShaddai Christian School by Tracey Glas-by since 2006.
In addition to receiving SA colours forthe first time, Beatrix, a Grade 12 student, played outstanding hockey to earn the u-18IPT Goalkeeper of the Tournament awardduring the event held in Potchefstroom inJune.
She captains her school side as well asher club side. Her school’s first team playin the WP Girls’ Grand Challenge Competi-tion. Her club, Durbanville Women’s Sec-ond Team, play in the WP Women’s TownChallenge League.
Tarryn, still in Grade 11, is having an ex-tremely busy provincial season, securingplaces in both the SA u-18A and the SA u-21
sides. The scintillating striker won the IPTTop Goal Scorer Award in 2011 playing forWP u-16A and again in 2012 playing for WPu-21A. She also plays her club hockey atDurbanville, turning out for the Women’sFirst Team that plays in the WP Women’sGrand Challenge League.
Representing the South African u-21squad, Tarryn is scheduled to play for theJunior Women’s Africa Cup qualifiermatches in Randburg in October this year,in the lead up to the FIH 7th Women’s Jun-ior World Cup next year.
A third WP player, Nicole Muller, fromThe Settlers High School in Bellville, wasalso selected for the SA u-18A Team.
During the IPT, the WP u-18A side, coached by Paulene de Bruin, won theirfirst five matches against Boland, North-erns, Amathole, Peninsula and EasternProvince A to make it into the semi-finalagainst KwaZulu-Natal Coastals.
TheWPgirls had to settle for fourthplacein the IPT when they lost the 3rd/4th play-off match to Amathole 3-1.

Two teams of the MilnertonSquash Club proved themselvesworthy after finishing among thetop five in their respective divisi-ons this season.
This year saw the Milnertonclub enter a women’s team in theleague for the first time in four ye-ars. They competed in the fourthdivision of the Western ProvinceLeague.
Despite a rocky start which saw
them losing their first fixture, theteam of Bianca Besener, MaureenCampbell, Linda Besener, DenisePotgieter and captained by RobynWalker went on to win the leaguecomprehensively.
The men’s first team also madetheir return to theprestigious firstdivision again.
This team always knew it wasgoing to be a tough season back inthe top division.
During the course of the season, the home fixtures were alwayswell supported, and the spectatorsgot to see some of the country’s topplayers back in action again. Mostmatches were tightly contestedand coming into the final fixtureagainst Welgemoed on 5 Septem-ber, Milnerton was in sixth positi-on on the table, with Welgemoedlying in fourth spot.
Only a comprehensive win
would see Milnerton leapfrog UCT(fifth position) and Welgemoed.
With the ever-vocal homeground support, the fixture got offto a great start for Milnerton withnumber four Mikhail Schabortwinning 3-0, and number threePikkie Swanepoel winning 3-1.
Number two player Matt Mar-shall went the distance in hismatch with Kobus van der Vyferand although he was well ahead in
the fifth and final game, he lost 3-2.The final match of the evening
saw local player Gary Wheadon ta-ke on Rudi Willemse, both rankedin the SA Top 10. With every gamecritical to the final league positio-ning, Gary came out firing, andmade short work of the slightlyhigher ranked Rudi. This gaveMilnerton a 13-4 win, which sawthem finish the season in fourthposition.
Tough back in top division for Milnerton
