The Fisantekraal waste water treatmentworks (WWTW) will play a huge role inthe long-term in the demand for water inSouth Africa and the Western Cape.
Construction of the R88 million projectstarted in October 2008.Shehaam Sims, mayoral committee mem-
ber for Utility Services of the City of CapeTown, said last week at the official openingof the newly constructed water treatmentworks, that SA has either reached or is fastapproaching the point where all financiallyviable freshwater resources are fully uti-lised.The plant is currently in the last leg of the
phased commissioning process, awaitinghandover to a contractor, whowill be respon-sible for the operation andmaintenance overthe next 15 years. The latest technology available to the
waste water industry is being used, makingthis the fourth plant in the country that usesultraviolet light for disinfection. “Thismeans that no chlorine needs to be used fordisinfection and subsequent release into theenvironment.“The plant is also geared to become a zero
discharge plant and the city has agreementsin place for the utilisation of 100 % of the fi-
nal effluent of this first phase, Sims said. The treatment capacity of 24 ML per day
for the first phase, which provides for the av-erage effluent discharge from 40 000 house-holds, was designed to enable operationalcommissioning at the earliest date in 2012.This now allows the deviation of waste wa-
ter flows to the new works from the Bellvilleand Kraaifontein catchments, thereby free-ing up capacity in these plants for new devel-opment, as well as providing significant op-portunities for growth in the DurbanvilleNorth-Fisantekraal corridor.“The City has recently completed the Dur-
banville Sewer Upgrade Project to divertwastewater from the Bellville WWTW toFisantekraal,” Sims said. Before this plantwas constructed, develop-
ment in thenorth east of the citywas restrict-ed due to the lack of capacity in the Bellvilleand Kraaifontein wastewater treatmentworks serving this area, Sims said. The need for a new waste water treatment
works to serve the potential development inthe city’s northernarea, was identified in theNorthern Spatial Development FrameworkStudy, which was concluded in 2000.“The Bellville and Kraaifontein WWTW’s
were running out of spare capacity.“A suitable site was identified in Fisante-
kraal for the construction of a WWTW to re-ceive diverted waste water from thecatchment areas of the Bellville and Kraai-fontein WWTW’s, thereby creating someneeded reserve treatment capacity in theseareas.”

Brackenfell-based welfare agencyShiloh Relief, has taken hands withSibusiswe Community Care inWal-lacedene, in a new partnership topromote sustainable lifestyles forthe poor.
According to Statistics South Af-rica, the unemployment rate inSouthAfrica is currently 36,6 %, upfrom 35,4 % at the end of last year.
“Of those currently unemployed,60 % have no matric, 68 % havebeen looking for a year or longer, and 44 % have never worked,” saysEstelle Veldman fromShilohRelief.
It was based on these dire figuresthat the two agencies initiated the
Enterprise Development scheme.“We are very excited about this
cause as it is the start of a climatechange for this struggling commu-nity. It takes people from a hand-to-mouth mentality to a sustainablelifestyle,” says Veldman.
The idea of this project is to teachbeneficiaries the concepts of goodbusiness practice – profit, loss, mark up, marketing and so on.
“We then sell good quality sec-ond-hand clothes for a very smallamount like R2 or R5 to them andhold them accountable to put intopractice what we have taughtthem,” she says.
“They have to produce a profitand loss sheet every time they come
to buy clothes from Shiloh. In thisway we teach the beneficiaries notto livehand tomouth, but to becomesustainable and responsible leaderswithin their families and communi-ty.”
The first group of women fromWallacedene graduated on 8 No-vember. Some 11 women receivedtraining.
Shilof Relief aims to continuallysupply them with good quality clo-thes, and calls on the generosity ofthe public to become part of thiseconomic empowerment initiative.
Please call Sally on 0839607069 oremail [email protected] if youare able to donate clothing to thisworthy cause.

When the bright-eyed artist speaks it ishard to believe he is only 11 years old.
“For all the kids out there, never give uponyourdream. You see,me, I’mnever givingup on drawing. It’s my talent! Your talentdoesn’t have to be drawing, acting or sing-ing. Even if you think you don’t have a tal-ent, all you should do is explore yourself andfind what it is you’re good at,” says the re-markable Thando Yedwa.
He certainly foundhis talents – and it’s notonly talking sense.
Thando and his peers at Abeille RucheSchool in Century City entered a DStv Car-toon Network competition andwon silver inthe national art competition.
Kids were asked to come up with a newcharacter for the popular show, The Amaz-ing World of Gumball.
Thando’s character Loly was chosen asrunner-up.
As a result, Thando won a hamper full ofgoodies and his school received R4 000.
Thando continues: “I first wanted to callthe character Lizzie because she reminded
me of the Simpsons, but then I called herLoly instead. I started drawing with a friendand we came up with a few character de-signs, such as cheese people.
“So we mixed it up and then the teachertold us that it should fit in with the Gumballfamily. I drew a cat girl.”
The father of the Gumball family is a bun-ny and the mother is a cat. The little sisteris a rabbit, so Thando thought of makingLoly look like the mother.
Thando also experimented with Loly’sgarments. She didn’t look too hot in a Scot-tish kilt, so he clothed her in a short, cutedress.
“Loly is a typical teen. They talk like, ‘youknow girlfriend’,” Thando laughs.
His principal, Liz Simpson, interrupts:“He is exceptionally talented!”
Suffice to say that Liz is over the moonwithThando’s prize, whichafter a class vote, will be used to buy a computer for the school.
The school is holding its annual Art Exhi-bitiononTuesday, 4Decemberbetween17:00and 19:00. Thando’s picture, along with artfrom all the pupils, will be on display. Mem-bers of the public are welcome. Contact theschool on 021 559 8902 or 074 181 9808.

The City of Cape Town has a strict policythat forbids solid waste collection personnelor any other service personnel from askingresidents for “donations”, but according toShehaam Sims, the city’s mayoral commit-tee member for utility services, incidentshave occurred where people, posing as citystaff, have aggressively asked homeownersfor money. Residents have also been threat-ened that waste will not be collected if thedemands are not met.
“The city will not tolerate such behaviourfrom our own staff and have accordingly in-
structed all staff that soliciting for ‘Christ-mas boxes’ and donations is discouraged,”Sims said.
Residents can report any incident of in-timidation by calling the call centre and pre-senting the date, time and place of the theincident as well as a vehicle registrationnumber of the culprits. Reports will be inves-tigated immediately and, if residents arewilling to testify, the city will be able to pros-ecute offenders. The event, set to be an annual occurrencewas launched last year.
This year 12 finalists were chosen by ajudging panel to compete in the finals.

Settlers High received a R5 000 prize andBloekombos received a R3 000 prize.
“As part of the entry process and criteria
for entering, choir masters had to be pre-pared to have the students perform beingmindful of the exam period as well. Theschools had to be available on the set datefor the competition as well as the recordingof the songs for the Airport Shopping’s limit-ed edition festive CD. The competition or-ganisers ensured the schools were accom-modated by having two recording dates aswell as sending the recording company tothose schools who couldn’t make it to the re-cording studio due to exams,” said DeidreDavids, Cape Town International Airport’scommunications manager.
All schools will be scheduled for a record-ing session for an exclusive CD productionby Cape Town International Airport.

A new world anattractive ideaSome people say the world is going to endon 21 December this year. Others say itwill be the dawn of a new era and that alland everything that will not serve the new(better) era, will be “disposed” of.
Nobody knows for certain of course, butwouldn’t it be great if we could get rid ofall thebad, start afreshwithonlyone thingin mind: the greater good of all.
People hunting power and money, egodriven by pure greed in a race where theycould never have enough, will hopefullyhave to go. They won’t serve us in a “bet-ter” era. Politicians encouraging people tobreak down, destroy, hurt and even killothers for political gain, like in our beauti-ful Boland and the Gaza strip right now, will have to go. If there’s no love and re-spect for honest work, mother nature, in-frastructure, fellow countrymen and theirinnocent families, you won’t fit in!
Corporate high flyers, more interestedin their own pockets and nurturing theiregos by covering their tracks at all cost, while disregarding people’s feelings orhard work, will have to hit the road. Infact, capitalism will have to go. It isolatespeople, ignores loving relationships, breeds lying, cheating and dishonesty, allin the name of “good business”.
Yes, a “new world” with love, hope, peace, honesty and respect for each other, may not be such a bad idea after all.

Bring us thegood newsYour editorial this week (“Fokus eerderof ditwat goed is”,TygerBurger 14Novem-ber) was spot-on andmademe think of thereasons why people including myself arein a negative frame of mind at present.
When the World Cup was on, you couldsense a feeling of joy, a feeling that SouthAfricans were all part of one nation. Thishas dissipated since then and we all knowthe reasons why.
Themedia is a powerful tool and is capa-ble of turning the mood of a nationaround. All we need is to focus on whatis good, but this does not sell newspapers.
One only needs to read the posters onthe street poles every morning. Rarely isit good news and maybe this contributesto the decline in sales experienced by themainstream papers.
Community papers like yourselves canassist by headlining uplifting stories andrelegating the bad news to page two. Sen-sible people do know that service deliveryis difficult at times and maybe some initi-ative to create awareness of these goodstories can be started by this paper.M GOLDINGParow

Audacity of taxi driversThis morning between 07:45 and 07:50 I wason the road that goes past the Graanendalshopping centre in Durbanville.
I witnessed a taxi driving on the oppositeright sidewalk – against traffic on thegrassed pedestrian area – at a hell of a speed.
He was kicking up dust and stones and thefive ladies walking on the sidewalk had tojump out of the way.
He then wormed his way off the curb intooncoming traffic and pushed his way acrossthe intersection and back into the left-handlane down towards Wellington Road.
Five minutes later a second taxi did exact-ly the same thing.
This is dangerous, aggressive, rude and
very upsetting to all drivers patiently wait-ing in the traffic.
I implore you to come through on Mondaybetween 07:30 and 08:00 to catch these guysoff-guard. You will not believe the audacity.

This “boereraat” proved its effec-tivenesswhen Stokkies sustained severe burnwounds from his elbow down to his hand in2006 during an accident on a mining site. The zest for a good workout
Last week Wednesday was World Diabe-tes Day, a day aimed at creating aware-ness amongs individuals to help themun-derstand what diabetes is all about andhow to overcome any fears about the dis-ease.
“There are two types of diabetes, whichare called Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Botharemanageable and can be treated if correct-ly diagnosed,” says Derrick Banks, ER24He explains:Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease in
which high levels of sugar is in the blood. This type 1 diabetes can occur at any age butis mostly found in children, teenagers oryoung adults. The cause of Type 1 is unknown but it’s be-
lieved that it’s some disorder that your bodyhas developed which can be passed downthrough the families. In Type 1 there is usually too little or no
insulinwhich causes sugar to build up in thebloodstream, making it unable to go back inthe cells, and the body is unable to use thesugar for energy. Some symptoms that you should look out
for are, being very thirsty, feeling hungry, tired or fatigued, losing weight without try-ing and going to the toilet more often. If you have been diagnosed with Type 1,
you will need to manage your diabetes, knowing how to treat and recognise if youhave low or high blood sugar, that you havethe correct eating plan and how to give your-self insulin if needed.Unlike people with Type 1 diabetes, people
with Type 2 diabetes produce insulin buttheir pancreas does not produce enough in-sulin or the body cannot use the insulin ade-quately.“This is when there isn’t enough insulin
or the insulin is not used as it should be sothe sugar can’t get into the body’s cells. When sugar builds up in the blood insteadof going into cells, the body’s cells are notable to function properly. With Type 2 diabe-tes anybody is able to get it but people whoare more at risk of being diagnosed withType 2 Diabetes are people over the age of45, are overweight, familyhistory of diabetesor possibility of high blood pressure.”With both types of diabetes the long-term
goals are both the same in treatment.By controlling your blood pressure and
cholesterol with enough exercise and ahealthy eating plan, doing regular self-test-ing of your blood to make sure your sugarlevels are okay.Get yourself checked today.Get to know the risk factors before it’s too

LOUISA STEYL
R&B singer, Loyiso Bala, is shar-ing the good news.
“Gospel is everything that pro-motes what is good, that’s why wecall it the good news,” said Loyiso, whose latest Christian offerings aredoing phenomenally well.Loyiso recently released his live
gospel CD and DVD, Love Complete, marking a completely new direc-tion for the talented performer. He even turned down a record
deal in the States to start moving inthis new direction.“I just felt a call to do this gospel
album,” he says.“There was a new sound in my
head that I hadn’t heard before,”Loyiso says. “It was absolutely afaithmove; I was doing what was inmy heart.”He points out that the responses
from interviews and social mediahave been amazing. “I just receiveso much more love for what I donow,” he says.“People love seeing someonewho
stands for something,” Loyiso adds,
stating that he believes that there isa lack of men who are willing to dothat. His new album has sold three
times more than his previous al-bums and he believes that themovehas definitely solidified his fanbase, but Loyiso isn’t doing this forfame.“I can see that what I am doing
is making a difference,” he says.“I’ve received enough recognitionin my life.”“When I did this, I was at the top
of my game,” he says, adding thatwhile he seemingly had everything,he felt empty.“It’s in giving, that I am now go-
ing to receive,” he says.Loyiso will be performing at the
Grand Arena this Saturday, along-side Danny K and several popularCape Town performers, as well asthe Settlers High School Choir andtheLimitedEditionDrumCorps forRocking our City.Tickets at Computicket.. Loyiso is on TygerBurger’s Or-

plekke behaal,” vertel Jancke.

Kampioenspan: Die HoërskoolBrackenfell se o.19-krieketspan isdie WP-noordelike stadsgebiede
