skapsprojek se naam SLEAK (Skills, Lear-ning, Education, Activities, Kids) is.
betrokke is by die projek.
Bosman by 083 688 5662.

Police are reacting quickly to shooting inci-dents in the community.Swift response resulted in the arrest of one
suspect within minutes, after a shooting in-cident outside the Bellville Magistrate’sCourt at about 09:30 on Tuesday 16 Octber. The victim, a 27-year-old man from Delft,
who was the accused in a case involvingdrugs was outside the court when a gunmanshot him in the head from close range. His attacker fled the scene in a green Audi
A4 in an unknown direction.
Shortly thereafter, SAPS members fromBishop Lavis noticed a green Audi drivingwildly. When the driver spotted the SAPS vehicle,
he tried to speed away from police.Unfortunately, in his attempt to get away,
he crashed thevehicle into ahouse inValhal-la Park.Luckily no one was injured in the acci-
dent, but the driver, also 27, was taken in forquestioning, while investigation into thecourt shooting continues.

. From page 1There was no money available for
much-needed maintenance work forthem.Another concerned resident pointed
out that at one of themeetings inBontehe-uwel an official pointed out more adultlearning centres were needed because“all you saw in Bonteheuwel was younggirls with babies on every corner.”“How can they make a statement like
that?” she said.“Have they done a survey to back up a
statement like this!”Irma Titus, another young education
activist in the area said that it was alsoimportant to see how the learners them-selves were taking these closures.
“It has seriously affected them becausethey think that it is something that theyhave done wrong that led to these clo-sures,” she said.“Here in Bonteheuwel they even took
to the streets to protest the action and Ithink that in some cases there will haveto be some serious counselling with themto make them believe in their educationagain.“It is even more despicable when you
realise that these decisions were madewhen learners were engaged in assess-ment exams at most schools.”Various organisations will be meeting
thisweek to decide on legal action againstthe Western Cape Education Departmentto fight the closures.

from UWC doing his practicals at the OasisSchool for Learners with Special Education-al Needs and he hosted a special awarenessprogramme at the school last week.“I felt that it was important to host this
presentation for the learners because evenwith their special needs they are not im-mune to the dangers involving HIV/Aids,physical abuse and even teenage pregnan-cies that exist in the communities wherethey live,” he said.“Part of this project was also to create an
environment that will enable learners, par-ents, staff and community members to worktogether without excluding each other.“Since many of the learners from this fa-
cility are often excluded from mainstreamsociety, the focus of the project is to createawareness about social inclusion.“We also hosted speakerswho spoke to the
children about reducing the stigma and dis-crimination around HIV/Aids and reducefactors that make people vulnerable to HIV/Aids.“Abusewas also part of the discussion and
we wanted to let the children know theirrights and that there are resources availableto them if they feel threatened in any way.”Mangxola also pointed out that after the
successful presentation at the school hewould like to thank the school for their sup-port to host the event.“Oasis Special School is in need of support

Bramble Way Primary School in Bonte-heuwel received a stationery donationworth R5 000 thanks to a chance conversa-tion in a meeting between Merriman Lionspresident Clive Fox and the marketing de-partment at Good Hope FM (GHFM).A small idea grew in momentum and then
suddenly Lions and Absa representatives, joined by GHFM personalities, caused quitea stir at the school.During the obligatory speeches, GHFM
marketing manager, Meegan Keiffer, stressed the importance of education in or-der to be successful in life. One of the poorer schools in the Cape
Metropole, BrambleWay is 50 years old this
year but it has little to celebrate.Through an acute shortage of funds and
rapidly deteriorating buildings which are inurgentneed of repairs andaquality paint jobboth inside and out, the school is in need ofsome seriousmaintenance, which is a costlyaffair. Many of the 275 learners need exter-nal support through food security services(part of which is provided by the We CareFeeding Project located in the same road). It is operated by a husband and wife team
and a reliable food source for needy learnersand local residents alike. The project and the school is ably support-

As part of a project to complete their de-grees in Business Commerce Aminah deKock, Nasreen Julius, Achmad Domingoand Nicole Frechtas combined their talentsto start the Adopt-a-Grade project.De Kock explained that the Adopt-a-Grade
team was established in July this year tocomplete an assignment on Project Manage-ment.“The project instructions required us to
identify a problem in the community and im-plement a solution, which soundspretty sim-ple,” she said.“However, we were expected to use the
tools taught in themodule and initiate, plan, execute and close off the project physicallyand not just as a proposal on paper.“As students we strongly believe in the
saying that: ‘knowledge is power’ and identi-fied our community problem as under-edu-cation.“Our solution to under-education
stemmed from its cause being the lack oflearningmaterials andwe therefore plannedto ‘adopt a grade’ of scholars from a schoolthat lacked the basic stationery needed to en-able its learning facilitators to educate learn-ers and provide the adopted grade with sta-
tionery.”In order to fund the project the Adopt-a-
Grade team approached several companiesfor donations and purchased stationery in-cluding, writing books, pencils, mathemati-cal sets and calculators to supply the entireGrade 3 class at the Dr Van de Ross PrimarySchool in Belhar.“While the project may have been started
to pass a module it has definitely impactedthe lives of the Adopt-a-Grade team and allparties affected by the outcome of the projectaswell as boost the aptitude of the kids,” con-tinued De Kock.“Therefore we would like to express our
gratitude to the staff at the school for wel-coming us andwewould like to show our ap-preciation to Extreme Fast foods, Steel-world, Victoria Park Butchery, DesmondFrecthas, Mickey, Najwah De kock, Faldie-lah Gassiep, Baderiya Fakir, Abdullah Faki-er, Nadia Haroun and the Davis, Domingoand Shira Families for all their generouscontributions.“They played a huge role in helping the
project achieve its goal, through enabling usto donate six boxes filled with stationery.“After the successful execution of the
project, the team has come to the realisationthat a pencil is not only an instrument forwriting, it also symbolises a tool of empower-ment, it equips scholars with the ability tobuild a strong foundation to amuch brighterfuture.”

“I cannot say that I come from ‘disadvanta-ged’ circumstances because I am privilegedto have a family that supports me, but therewere also many challenges, trials and tribu-lations that I had to overcome.
Carly added that her education started atAccordian Primary in the area and she is ve-ry grateful for the strong foundation for lear-ning that this school provided.
“She laughs when she recalls that whenshe got to high school many people regardedher as a ‘blondie’.
“Luckily I did not let it get me down butit only inspired me to achieve my potential.
“Before this year, getting an A was just adream, but this year I made it a reality withsix certificates and three medals at our prize-giving,” she said.
Her haul of accolades included being thetop achiever for economics and visual art, merit awards in business studies and life ori-

While children all over the coun-try wished to get a bandana intheir favourite colour to wear toschool last week to raise moneyfor the Sunflower Fund, all a lit-tle girl of Oakdale wished for isnot to be sick so that she can justgo to school.
The parents of Emma Fourie (9)are still trying to absorb the devas-tatingnews that her aggressive can-cer has returned after almost fouryears of ongoing surgery, chemo-therapy and radiation.
Emma was first diagnosed withcancer in 2008 – only six months af-ter her sister, Alex (5), was born
with an abnormal heart condition.“We were still frail from the first
bad news, when I discovered oneday, whilst bathing Emma, that shehad a hard lump in her left but-tock,” Emma’s mother, Natalie, said.
“After an MRI scan and biopsy, the lump turned out to be cancerous– a sort of cancer of the soft tissue.”
Twenty weeks of chemotherapyfollowed, of which Emma spent 14weeks in hospital. That was fol-lowed with six weeks of radiationtherapy.
“By week three the top layer ofher skin looked like third degreeburns. The skin was so raw, we had
to give her strong pain medicationjust to let her go to toilet,” she said.
After radiation, more chemother-apy followed, totalling 16 months oftreatment.
Thereafter, Emma had to go for athree-monthly MRI scan, X-raysand blood tests. “Everything wasgoing well. Emma started Grade 1at Gene Louw Primary and enjoyedher dance lessons. We were plan-ning to go on a trip with somefriends,” she said.
WhenEmmawent for her normalMRI scan and check-ups in January2011, they suspected nothing. How-ever, another tumour was discov-ered and Emma had to be operatedon for the tumour to be removed.
“Due to financial reasons, as wewere still trying to recover fromlast time, we had to change medicalaids.Ournewmedical aidhas givenus a 12 month exclusion on cancerfor Emma. So, we then had to fundeverything ourselves.
“The expenses were big. In onlyfive months our hospital accountran up to almost R100 000. I’m so ter-rified that they will stop Emma’streatment as we cannot afford topay,” she said.
She had six sessions of intensechemotherapy. However, it was de-cided radiationposesmajor risks asthe tumour extended into the pelvicwall.
In October that year another tu-mour was discovered. She went forsurgery in November to try and re-move the tumour in five and a halfhours of surgery.
Emmahad thenundergone 23 ses-sions of radiation. This was once
again followed by chemotherapy.“Shewas able to go to the first day
of Grade 2 this year – she really en-joyed it. Due to her treatmentschedules, she was only able to goto schooluntil the endofFebruary.”
In the last week of February shecommenced with chemotherapy.
She suffered very bad side effects. The final chemotherapy sessionwas completed in July this year andthe radiologist confirmed that allthe scans are clear.
However, in September, Emmastarted complaining that her backwas sore.
Another tumourwas found in thebone ofEmma’s spine. “We immedi-ately had to start her on steroids totry and reduce the swelling. Shortlyafter, they discovered another tu-
mour in the bone of a vertebra, thatis busy encroaching on the nerve ofher spine, causing the pain in herback.
They also found a recurrence ofthe old tumour in the pelvic region. There are also three visible lesionsin the liver – one the size of a golfball.
“The oncologists and radiologistsdo not see any cure this timearound. They gave her 10 sessionsof radiation.
“We are exploring some alterna-tive non-invasive treatments. Alsoto keep her on a good diet and pray, pray, pray for a miracle,” she said.
Financially this puts strain onthe family. Anyone who wishes toassist, can send an email to Natalieat [email protected].
Brave face as cancer reappears
Emma is bravely trying to keep up with her schoolwork.
All 64 children of the Kids Can Pre-Primary School bought a bandana forBandana Day and raised R1 300 for the Sunflower Fund. One of the childrenin the school is Emma’s cousin – Emma suffers from cancer. Wie kan ’n snytjie louwarm, vars-gebakte brood weerstaan? Minmense, glo ek.
bestanddele, voeg sterk louwarm wa-ter by en meng goed deur.
Kontak Louise met navrae by

SAREL BURGER
DieUniversiteitWes-Kaapland (164) is net
Edgemead(153) is baie goed geplaas teen Bellville-Suid(82).
JacoCastle (75),WesleyThomas (57) enMor-né Heyneke (4/38) is Durbanville (188/5) seuitblinkers teen Claremont (222).

VascoDaGamaopen their seasononahighnote when they beat Witbank Spurs 3-0 ina National First Division league match atParow Park on Sunday afternoon.
The home team dominated right from thestart, but had to wait until the fifth minute toopen the scoring when midfielder Zeka Kar-kee crashed home a rather brilliant close ran-ge shot.
Geofrey Serunkuma made it 2-0 before thebreak, and from there the Parow side shouldhave buried Witbank Spurs in an avalancheof goals, with the chances they created, butpoor finishingmeant there was no further im-provement on the score before halftime.
However, they improved after the break anddominated the second half, even though theywere only able to increase their lead by onemore goal throughJohnKarkee in the 84thmi-nute with a well taken header.
The former Hanover Park player benefitedfrom great set-up play by the likes of GarethNcacaandRobertoDoSanto, while goalkeeperKyle Peters was another star for Vasco Da Ga-ma, keeping a clean sheet with some excellentsaves to ensure Witbank Spurs never had theslightest chance of a comeback.

derwasgiven the red card forkickingSici She-lembe in the 70th minute.
“It will always be difficult to play the firstgame of the season, especially with a numberof new players that we have in the squad butwe managed to get three points and that’s im-portant,” says theVascoDaGama coachAnto-nio De Nobrega.
Engen Santos played to a goalless drawaway to FC Cape at the NNK Rugby Stadiumin Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams started at a fast pace and therewere scoring chances from the opening minu-tes.
Though the “People’s Team’’ dominatedmost of the match and hit the crossbarthroughSalmaanKing in the secondhalf, theywere unable to capitalise on the chances theycreated.
Both teams had strong penalty appeals tur-ned down.
Oneminute before the endMzuvele Skhosa-na was given the red card for elbowing NasiefMorris.
Nooij Martinus the Santos coach would ha-ve preferred to start with a win away from ho-me, but was pleased they managed to get apoint after all.
“FC Cape are a good team and others whocome here will struggle to get a good resultsagainst them,” he said.

A blistering south-easter made things verytough on cyclists who took part in Sunday’sTiletoria West Coast Express cycle event inSunningdale.
Although it was no pleasure on the rideback from Atlantis it proved helpful for thisyear’s winner of the 85 kmmen’s Elite groupDave Garrett. Riding for Team Focus, Gar-rett was part of the early break-away groupof five riders. “Weattackedafter about 15 kminto the race, just after the Koeberg PowerStation on the R27,” Garrett said.
“Then we dropped one rider. After about50 km Carl Pasio from RSA Web joined theleading bunch. At this stage when had abouta 40 second lead on the chasing bunch,” hesaid of the route that took the riders all theway out to Mamre.
At the 65 km mark the leading group lostits lead somewhat with the other ridersbreathing down their necks trailing by only10 seconds.
“Then I attacked again and opened up agap of about one minute which I kept all theway to the finish,” he said of his win in2:05:30.
“It was a head-wind all the way back so wereally suffered but luckily the teamscouldn’t get organised with this head-windso I managed to keep the tempo and keepthem at bay,” Garrett said.
The chasing bunch saw a sprint to the fin-ish with Reniell Matthysen (Intellibus)crossing the line in second place 30 secondsafter Garrett. David’s Focus teammate KyleDonachie from Durbanville came in third.
