When TygerBurger visited the scene of the incident in Binne Cres- cent on Monday, the destruction was evident with the south-easter stirring the ashes of what once was home to a married couple, and two friends who shared living quarters. Two cars are testimony to the speed with which the fire took hold, and the acrid smell of the fire hangs in the air. The family is out at hospital hoping for the recovery of their injured brother. All destroyed Samuel Azer shared one of the wendy houses with Richard Blows, and he sat among the cinders still hop- ing for the recovery of his friend, and wandering what his future will be with everything destroyed. He is still in shock as he recounts what happened and how they tried to pull their friend from the burning structure. On Monday morning at about 08:30 occupants of the main house on the property were alerted that one of the wendy houses next to the house was on fire. “We ran out immediately,” says Az- er, who was in the main house at the time. “I knew that Richard was still in the room and tried to get him out but he was too heavy for me as the flames and smoke were just too thick. “While I tried to get my breath, the owner of the main house managed to get in and got him out, but we could see that he had been badly burnt.” Tragically he died from his injuries later on Monday. Local council officials and commu- nity workers have rallied around to help the families come to terms with their loss, and help them to get some relief for the festive season. V To page 2. Youngsters can get into the swim of thingsat Bonteheuwel Swimming Pool in the holi-days.Various partners that include the Safe
Schools project of the department of educa-tion in collaboration with the City of CapeTown, Community Safety, SAPS and Athlet-ics South Africa will be hosting the Learnto Swim programme, and it will include lotsof other fun activities as well. The Learn to Swim programme was
formed through an initiative by the Depart-ment of Safe Schools, the City of Cape Townand the Department of Cultural Affairs andSport in 2004 when the first Learn to Swimprogramme took place at the BonteheuwelSwimming Pool. This programme has been held every De-
cember during school holidays“Schoolholidays arenormally timeswhen
the young people of the area do not knowwhat to dowith themselves, and, inmany in-stances, are drawn to activities that are neg-ative and problematic,” says Andre Morganof Safe Schools, one of the facilitators of theprogramme.“The intention is to provide alternatives
that will keep the children and young peopleoccupied in a constructive way and kept offthe streets, where they are prone to becomethe targets of gangsters and drug pedlars.“Through this programme the kidswill be
able to acquire much-needed life skills andlessons thatwill inspire them to become con-structive and positive members of society, understanding the environment in whichthey live, and how they can contribute to-wards the transformation of that environ-ment towards making the area liveable, healthy and safe.”While the area is impoverished with ap-
proximately 60 % of all adults being unem-ployed, resulting in some children going toschool hungry, it is a situation that has in-creased criminal activities like gangs anddrugs, and seeks to attract the innocent chil-dren into a web of destruction.“Notwithstanding the above, the excite-
ment of the children to play sports is veryencouraging and quite overwhelming, andwe want to sustain and possibly expand thispositive attitude and enthusiasm in our ar-ea,” concluded Morgan. The programme will run until 20 Decem-
ber; further information is available at thepool.

Teacher helps to make dreams come trueREYANA STEYN
Wishes do come true. This was proved when a Parow teenager
was selected to be a beneficiary of the KFM94.5 Christmas wish so she can receive acornea operation she urgently needs.
At the age of nine Robyn Links (now 17)was diagnosedwith keratoconus – a diseaseof the eyewhere the eye loses its shape caus-ing many other problems along with it.
Although Robyn’s condition worsenedand schooling became difficult for her asthe years went by, she remained her posi-tive, bubbly self.
She has been on the waiting list at Tyger-berg Hospital since her diagnosis, but stillhad not been notified and her parents couldnot afford the operation privately whichcost R50 000.
AnnekadeVries, a teacher at ParowHighSchool took the initiative and wrote to theradio station explainingRobyn’s condition;and onWednesday a jovial atmosphere sur-rounded the school as KFM staff arrived togive Robyn and her parents the good news– the Dischem Foundation sponsored theR50 000 for the operation, which includesadditional costs for contact lenses.
Robyn says it has been an overwhelmingexperience.
“When I was diagnosed the optometristprescribed special contact lenses whichmade my life a bit easier at school. At 16,it got really bad and the optometrist thenprescribed that I wear two contact lenses(one hard and soft) as the hard contact lens-es were damaging my eyes.”
Robyn was diagnosed with chronic kera-toconus in February and in August thisyear she was told that she needed to havea cornea transplant in six months.
“It’s been difficult as I can’t see writingon the board and I have to wait for friendsto finishwriting so I can take thework fromtheir books. It’s tough but I wasn’t going tolet this get me down and put in the extraeffort. Parow High has been very support-ive and enlarges all my paperwork.”
Being a beneficiary couldn’t have come ata better moment as Robyn will be in matric
next year and is planning on studying lawthereafter.
“I am so grateful to KFM and Dischemwhomade this possible. Iwason thewaitinglist for cornea donors at TygerbergHospitaland I had already been waiting since I wasnine and my parents couldn’t afford it. Itmeans the world to me that my teacher (DeVries) wrote in and that I was chosen. Thistruly is the best Christmas gift.”
Robert Links, Robyn’s father, says it is in-credible.
“It is absolutely amazing what they didfor us.Wewere called believing that we hadto talk about Robyn’s computer classes fornext year, which she could no longer takebecause of her eyesight and then we real-ised the real reason.”
He says it means a lot to the entire familyand is a weight off their shoulders.
V The family would like to thank KFM,Dischem Foundation, M-Net, Anneke andParowHigh School for all their support andfor making this operation possible.
The KFM wish came true for Robyn Links who can now receive an operation which she desper-ately needs. Farewell to a great teacherGARY VAN DYK
Montevideo Primary will bemissing a major force on theteaching staff next year.
With schools closing lastweeklearners said a sad farewell tofoundation phase teacher MaryGella after 42 years in the profes-sion.
Now living in Parow North, she was born in Hermanus andspent 18 years teaching in Haw-ston before coming to the schoolin Montana where she has beenfor the past 23 years.
“I lived through nine princi-pals here,” she laughs.
“For me it has always been apleasure to teach because I havea passion for children and en-couraging them to do well.
“Therehave been timeswhereI have taught higher grades butI have alwayswanted to get backto my foundation phases be-cause this is where you mustgive the children that initialmo-tivation that must take themright through their education.”
Principal Terrence Timmetonly had praise for this teacher.
“We cannot lose the years ofexperience andwealth of knowl-edge that this teacher has.”
“Over the years she hasproved that youmust never giveup on children even if they havelearning disabilities. At onestage she was teaching thoseclasses but her passion saw themgetting in-to the mainstream classes and all of thempassed the next few years,” he said.
“She was honoured with a lifetimeachievement award for this region, andover the years has achieved the highest per-centages in the annual national assess-ments for language and maths.”
Her message to the new generation of
teachers is that they have to be prepared tobecome an integral part of the lives of theirlearners.
“This is not a nine to five job, you mustbe prepared to be the foundation of educa-tion in their lives. Make them the thinkersand inventors of the future. Give them theconfidence to want their dreams, and facethe world with positivity and no fears.”
Principal Terrence Timmett, with Mary Gella and some ofthe learners who will be missing her next year.

Making (very) cool memoriesANDRÉ BAKKES
There were moments in the Arctic iceboxwhere one fully expected to see an emperorpenguin doing his happy feet dance on theother side of a tiny frosty glacier.
Snow World in Canal Walk, the first of itskind ever seen in South Africa, is a mustfor kids andadultswhoare looking for somewonder in their lives.
It is also the ideal place to experience anippy winter in a sweltering hot summer.
“Nippy” is perhaps an understatement. The temperature wasn’t so much “nippy”
as it was piercingly penetrating and biting-ly brisk.
The whole surreal undertaking will un-doubtedly leave one cool memory in itsplace.
There were ice slides for everyone, icethrones for the regal wannabes, ice climb-ing for the brave, ice sculpting for the curi-ous and ice for snowmen.
Suffice to say ice was ever present in theicy world of blue fingers and goose bumps.
Gloves would have been handy. The TygerBurger photographer’s index
finger could not stop pressing the shutterrelease button, partly because of the myriadamount of magical moments and also hisfinger was frozen to the button itself.
To put the cherry on top of the ice creamcake, kids can have their picture taken withSanta Clause in a realistic frozen cave.
Snow World is a complete 300 m² indoorsnowenvironment right in themiddle of theshopping centre, which includes a play areafor the little ones, a thrilling toboggan slide,a six-metre ice climbing wall and a toddlerdragon slide.
It is open from 10:00 to 22:00 every day un-til 6 January, so when the summer sun getstoo much to handle, there is only one placeto go!V For more information about Snow World contact021 529 9699.

Brakke, Kraaie behaal segesSAREL BURGER
Ockert Erasmus (3/24) was Brackenfell sesuksesvolste boulers.

Ajax Cape Town bagged three crucial pointswhen they edged out Maritzburg United 1-0in an Absa Premier League match played atthe Athlone Stadium on Friday night. The only goal was scored by Toriq Losper,
a low drive at the near post after Wandersonset up the Ajax Cape Town midfielder on theedge of the penalty area.Maritzburg coach Ernest Middendorp be-
lieves that a failure to hold onto the ball inthe last third of the field has contributed tothe team’s two defeats this week. The Team of Choice failed to score against
bothPlatinumStars andAjaxCapeTown, go-ing down 1-0 in both matches.Against the Urban Warriors on Friday,
Maritzburg United played some neat foot-ball, but not in the areas where they couldhurt the opposition.“When the ball did go forward, to striker
Cuthbert Malajila it came back too quickly,”says Middendorp.Ajax Cape Town coach Jan Pruijn was re-
lieved to see his men bouncing back afterthey were outplayed by Kaizer Chiefs in a 3-0defeat earlier in the week.“It was a matter of making the players
aware of the fact that we are in the bottomof the log, playing a team that is unbeatenaway,” he said.Pruijn was happy to see his players carry-
ing out instructions, although it concernedhimthat theynearly letMaritzburgback intothe game with Delron Buckley’s late chance.“I toldmyplayers to bepatient, to be organ-
ised, to try and play the ball down the wingsand that they would then get a chance.”There was an early scare for the home side
when a slip up by Matthew Booth nearly letin Ryan de Jongh, but Sean Roberts did welltomove off his line quickly tomake the inter-cept.
