“My ma het kom kyk.
Sunette sê sy was ’n veelsydige speler virdie Boland-span.
Haar vak-ke is ekonomie, be-dryfsekonomie, EBWen LO.
Daar is min mense watweet vrouekrieket bestaan.
“Daar sal ek aan-hou afrig. Maar dit isnie my lewensdroomom ’n groot afrigter tewees nie.
“Ek sal altyd byskole betokke bly enek wil kinders afrig, want daai sprankel indie oog is waaroor ditgaan.
“Shabnim Ishmael, ons noem haar PocketPower, bly in Ravensmead, so ons sien me-kaar gereeld.

There are no more safe havens in thecity.
This seems to be the overall senti-ment of patrons of the Tyger Valley Shop-ping Centre who have taken to social me-dia since Monday to make their discon-tent clear after an armed robbery at apopular family restaurant.
The Spur in the shopping centre wasrobbed by five men near closing time onSunday evening. The robbers posed as cli-ents before holding up staff and patronsand fleeing with cash and digital goods.
Shopping centre spokesperson LarethaBlom confirmed the robbers had fired oneshot at security guards giving chase, thenfled in a silver vehicle.
Some of the comments on TygerBur-ger’s Facebook page included one fromCheryl Willemse, asking: “When will thismadness end??? (sic)”
Stefan Eksteen said: “They’re gonna eatus! I’m going to Australia. Sad and an-gered. Next you’ll see diners with glocks
and 9 mm at the tables. Feeling con-cerned.”
Ivan Vanhooydonck said: “No ways. It’sgetting closer to our doorstep,” with Tra-cey Lee Appolis Johannes adding: “Andwe ate here a few nights ago! Scary.”
Ruth Slabbert Frazer said in Afrikaans:“One is not safe anywhere in the countryanymore. Spur is not seeing me againsoon...” Kerisha Naidoo thought the rob-bery was simply “insane!”.
Hadlay Mclean said none of his friendshad heeded his warning to steer clear ofthe steer chop shop: “I keep telling youpeople to stay away from Spur. No one ev-er listens. Sucks that this happenedthough. Hectic.”
These were just some of the hundredsof comments posted as the story publishedon theTygerBurgerwebsite started circu-lating on Monday. In the meantime, policehave had no luck making any arrests.
Provincial police spokesperson CaptainFC van Wyk, said the (getaway) vehiclewas later spotted in Nyanga by police.
“The suspects tried to evade the policeand they shot at police members and a
chase ensued,” said Van Wyk.He said the car stopped at the corner of
New Eisleben and Klipfontein Roads andthe suspects jumped out and fled on foot.“Some of the stolen items and cash wererecovered. It was found that the Golf washi-jacked in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday 6February.” He asked the public’s help tofind the perpetrators.
“Police are investigating a businessrobbery, attempted murder and hijackingcases and request anyone with informa-tion that could lead to the arrest of the sus-pects to please contact Crime Stop on08600 10111.” Provincial community safe-ty minister Dan Plato said the only wayto get rid of the scourge of business rob-beries, was to invest heavily in additionalsecurity measures.
“We are very worried about the increas-ing number of robberies at centres.
“This shows a great measure of despera-tion from the syndicates to lay their handson money. “Added security measure willcome at a great cost, but this is the pricewe will have to pay to get rid of thisscourge,” Plato said.

’n koper in sig.
elders Die Ranch kom besoek.
Daar was

Town audiences chose to perform at theshow, the only one in the countrywhere thepublic decide the line-up.Band’s frontman Dr Victor says he’s loo-
king forward to the outdoor show on Satur-day 21 March.“I like open-air concerts because everyt-
hing is bigger: bigger dance moves, biggerapplause and a huge sound system to playthrough.”Dr Vic, as he is also known, says the band
is planning to play some of the hits that ma-de them a household name in South Africa.“Most of the songs I’ve had the opportuni-
ty to sing on are crossover songs and theyappeal to all races and the whole family,”the I love to Truck singer says. He’s alsoachieved success with songs such as EddyGrant’s Give Me Hope Joanna that were al-readyhits in the ’60s and ’70s before theRas-ta Rebels recorded their own versions.“I believe a good song will always be a
good song,” he says.Dr Victor’s musical career has seen him
share the stagewith international stars likeGloria Estefan and Janet Jackson, but saystwo of the biggest highlights of his careerare meeting Paul Simon in 1995 and TinaTurner in 1996.He is also involved with local talent
though and even co-wrote and produced thepopular You Touch Me (Horny) album byDawnay. The title track off the album spenta record-breaking 22 weeks at the top of lo-cal charts in 2001.Dr Victor is currently working with the
artist known as Ricardo, whose single I loveyou Daddy was a huge hit in the ’80s.“The brother needs my help and I’m just
reaching out to him as a friend,” he says.Dr Victor also hopes to finish his smooth
jazz guitar project and his long overdueChristmas album this year. For now though, fans can look forward to

Kol.

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people... – a poign-ant and famous line fromHandel’s epicmas-terpiece,Messiah, is now the title of an oper-atic musical borne from dusty Bloekombosstreets.Unforgettable childhood moments often
shape the rest of our lives, personalities areformedby themand theyare for thebest partnostalgic and wholesome. But not for everyone, especially thosewho
grew up in impoverished Cape Town com-munities.Mali Kwatsha (19), from Bloekombos was
only fivewhenhe learned hewas abandonedonadumpsite byhismother – amemory thatevokes much emotional pain.An alcoholic,Mali’smotherwas lost to the
thriving shebeen life in the township, wherea string of social ills are employed to copewith everyday reality.“Neither my father nor I ever knew why
she did it, but I believe that alcohol hadkilled her love forme,”Mali says in an inter-view with TygerBurger. His anquished father, a construction
worker, found him later that night after re-turning home from work and raised his sonalone. His mother never returned.Mali is one of 24 teens in the Bloekombos
Secondary School choir who will be per-forming in this much anticipated musicaltheatre production, a year and a half in themaking.
AutobiographicalMali’s story and those of his peers outlines
the autobiographical texts and songs forComfort Ye, which comes to Artscape inMarch.“I wanted them to create their own story,
which started in a 10-day workshop duringDecember 2013. They penned their stories
and I used it as material to write the text,”German stage director and librettist RobertLehmeier explains.Lehmeier is associated to Umculo Produc-
tions, an international music organisationthat supports lasting social change throughmusic in South Africa. He describes the piece as heart-wrenching
and gripping, with a deeply spiritual under-current.“It is stories of love and death in themidst
of abject poverty, substance abuse and teen-age pregnancies, and the title Comfort Yebrilliantly encompasses the theme of theproduction. How to overcome and find hopewhen everything seems so desperate,” hesays.“The main story revolves around one day
in the life of a young man in Bloekombos. It’s six o’clock in the morning, he kisses agirl, then runs away as the police arrive. Itis adark story, full of ambiguityandshadow, but finds its way to an optimistic conclu-sion.”Formerly, the laughing stock of the choir
world, the 24-piece ensemble of BloekombosSecondary choir will sing and act alongsideeight professional singers and actors and abaroque chamber orchestra in this piecethat encompasses several choruses and ari-as from Messiah.Final rehearsals started two weeks ago,
andBloekombosSecondary is ahiveof activ-ity every weekday afternoon.Lehmeier and director Shirley Apthorp
agree: “These youngsters are great and we
are very impressed with them. It was a joyto work with them. They are talented andtheir performances are honest and powerfulwith a stage presence hard to emulate.”Jason Make (17) says this experience has
changed his life for the better.“It motivated me and made me wiser. It
taughtmehow tomake good decisions in lifeand how to distinguish the right path fromthe wrong,” he said.
Confidence and courage“As a performer it taught me confidence
and how to project and act,” he adds. Both Sibuyiselo Nywili (15) and Nasiphi
Ntosimbi, are excited to perform on thesame stage that brought soprano PrettyYende fame.“We had so much fun and can’t wait for
the opening night. Being part of Comfort Ye,made us proud and gave us courage,” Sibuy-iselo says.Although most of the youngsters feel a ca-
reer in the performance arts is not what willultimately lift them out of poverty, they doagree that this experience has given themthe courage and willpower to finish school, advance tertiary education and work to-wards their respective dreams.“I never knew I could sing this well, but
coming from a poor home, I can’t pin mydreams on singing alone,” says Mali.“I will have to study and find a good job
to support my father and I and build a betterlife for my family.”One thing is for sure though, come 6
March, many a childhood dreams will cometrue.V The world premiere performance of “Comfort Ye”which has already received international invitations, takes place at Artscape’s Drama Theatre on 6 March,at 19:00, with further performances on 7 and 8 Marchat 15:00.Tickets are available at computicket and Artscape Box office. They range from R50 120 per person.

Its fifth birthday celebration heralds expo-nential expansion at Capegate Mediclinicin response to a fast growing community.Amidstmuch excitement at the celebrati-on held at the hospital onMondaymorning, hospital manager Carol Defty explainedwhy expansion was necessary.“Due to the swift population growth inthe area, it is no secret the hospital has inrecent times suffered a shortage of beds.Whenweopened on 8February 2010,wehad144 beds and six theatres, but initially onlyused 90 beds and four theatres.Within threeyears, however, we had to open the entirehospital.“Add to that the excellent standard of lo-cal specialised services and a loyal core
staff compliment and you have the winningformula for our success,” she said. The hospital is currently adding to its itspaediatric and neonatal ICU wards and isawaiting the approval from the health de-partment to add another 120 beds, two thea-tres and a day hospital.Defty says construction on this expansi-on is set to start early next year, pendingapproval.“We always strive to offer a better serviceto our patients and appreciate feeback fromthe community, positive or negative, to beable to deliver better service,” she adds.Free health screenings, which includedglucose, blood pressure and cholestrol testswere offered free of charge in the hospitalfoyer on Monday, while those who could“afford” it, enjoyed some birthday cakewith staff members.

If you are looking for something differentto do this Valentine’s Day, then the Korn-gold Project Concert on 14 February at theHugo Lambrechts Auditorium in PictonStreet, Parow, could be just the ticket.“The concert starts at 16:00 and the line-up of artists reminds one of the 1960s ‘Rat-pack’ Oceans 11 team – in this case, sixhandsome and talented men – drawn fromacross the globe,” says André Coetzee, spokesperson for Hugo Lambrechts.Cape Town favourites Daniel Rowland,Gareth Lubbe and Julian Arp are joined bycolleagues Benjamin Roskams (BBC Symp-hony Orchestra) and Francesco Sica (TrioMonte) plus local cellist Peter Martens andthe ‘Danny Ocean’ of the group – pianistLuis Magalhães.“We performed these works at the Stel-lenbosch International Chamber MusicFestival resulting in the most enthusiasticpublic reaction and rave reviews”, saysMa-galhães.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold is often associ-ated with the creation of the symphonicfilm score. Many of his admirers today be-came familiar with his music through hisfilm scores of the 1930s and 1940s. But beforearriving inHollywood hewas awell-knowncomposer of concert and chamber music, operas and stageworks, aswell as an arran-ger and conductor. Most often compared toMozart, Korngoldwas, in his own right, oneof the most gifted composing child prodi-gies in the history of music.“The programme includes the PianoQuintet in E major, Op. 15 and the StringSextet in D major, Op. 10. The music has aheroic, effusively romantic melodic stylemaking it perfect for a unique Valentine’sdate,” Coetzee says.Safe parking is provided.

The ability of police to successfully com-bat crime in South Africa is severelyhampered by their incapacity to gener-
ate crime intelligence. This is the view Dr Johan Burger put for-
ward at a discussion at the School of PublicLeadership of theUniversity of Stellenboschin Bellville last Wednesday.Burger is a senior researcher at the Insti-
tute for Security Studies (ISS) and ProfessorExtraordinarius at the department of policepractice at Unisa. The discussion, facilitated by the Centre
for Constitutional Rights, centred on jus-tice, safety and security.Burger said the South African Police Ser-
vice’s (SAPS) crime intelligence perform-ance has declined to minuscule figures overthe last three years, making it almost impos-sible to combat the organised crime syndi-cates overrunning the country. He referred to the exponential 142% in-
crease in armed robberies in shopping cen-tres over the last year.“I am extremely worried about this in-
crease and part of the problem lies with thepolice,” he said.It is due to the lack of SAPS crime intelli-
gence that crime syndicates such as theones behind many mall robberies are hav-ing a field day, he said.Another worry is the decline in success-
ful convictions.“A 60 000 increase in police officers since
2001 resulted in a 54% growth in arrests, but due to the poor quality of the investiga-tions on the dockets, a 20% decline in suc-cessful convictions was indicated by theNational Prosecuting Authority (NPA)during the same time,” he said. And he says this gap is growing.Although in 2012 the National Develop-
ment Plan (NDP), already approved theprofessionalisation of the police and bring-ing back specialised crime units, Burgerexpressed his concern about the actual im-plementation of these plans.“It has been two years since these plans
have been approved in chapter 12 of theNDP and yet nothing has changed ... andwith police leadership in its current disar-ray I question whether they could imple-ment this plan by themselves.”Among other things, this plan encapsu-
lates the re-establishment of specialisedunits, the establishment of a national po-liceboardand the inclusionof a codeof con-duct into performance appraisals of the po-lice.
It will renew focus on strengthening capaci-ty and training of detectives and specialisedinvestigators in the fields of forensics, ballis-tics and crime-scene investigations.Furthermore, police officers would be spe-
cially trained to respond to the changingcrime trends such as narcotics, cyber crimeand international crime syndicates.Dissolving specialised units such as South
African Narcotics Bureau (Sanab) and Mur-der andRobbery resulted in the loss of special-ised investigative capacity within the SAPS,said Burger.“Specialist investigators develop informer
networks, and become familiar with emerg-ing and changing modus operandi of crimi-nals or networks.”

An identity fraudsterwho had been cau-singhis victimmisery for 16 years, hasbeen busted by City traffic officials.
Jafta Williams went to the Parow TrafficDepartment a few weeks ago to enquireabout traffic fines andwarrants issued inhisname for offences he had not committed.Williams said he lost his identity docu-
ment and driver’s licence in Bellville 16 ye-ars ago and has been haunted by an identitythief ever since, facing arrest for outstan-ding fines and having to pay for offences henever committed. Efforts to clear up the is-sue, including with the police and home af-fairs, had come to nought. At the traffic department, one of the offi-
cers searched the database and found astring of offences registered in the Retreatand Capricorn areas for a Toyota minibusand others for a Toyota Tazz. The discoveryled officers Desré Benadie and Marnus Vis-ser to the Retreat taxi rank the following
day, where they received confirmation thatthe person going by the victim’s name wasin fact a taxi driver. Once they tracked himdown, he insisted that he was Williams andproduced an identity document to prove it.“The fraudster was so brazen. He actually
tried to convince the officers that he was infact Mr Williams. Even when they went offin search of a Morpho Touch machine to ve-rify his identity through fingerprinting, hestill stuck to his story. Only through persis-tent questioning did he eventually confessthat he had in fact stolen the resident’s iden-tity and had used it to make duplicate licen-ces andpurchase a vehicle, as henever legal-ly acquired his own driving licence,” saidthe City’s mayco member for safety and se-curity, JP Smith. The suspectwas arrested for fraudandhas
since appeared in court.“These officerswent aboveandbeyond the
call of duty,” said Smith.

Three weeks ago Allyson Swanepoel fromKraaifontein started knitting and didn’tstop until she had completed 40 brand newsets of newborn baby beanies and booties.
And she is not finished yet.“About 500 babies are born at Carl Brem-
mer each month, many of whom do not ha-ve proper warm clothing to go home in,”she says.
She learned of this plight from a nursingsister at the hospital after she read apamphlet in a wool shop recently.
It reads as follows: “There are a numberof hospitals around the country, in whichbabies are being born and have no warmclothes to wear. In some of these hospitalsthe babies are even wrapped in newspaperand sent home. Many of them become veryill (pneumonia and bronchitis) and areeven dying of this.”
This tragedy softened her heart and sheimmediately bought a bag of wool and setoff home to start the mammoth project.
“The nursing sister even provided mewith a pattern for beanies and booties forpremature babies, as this is often a direneed. The hospital already have a group ofladies knitting for them, but it is simply notenough for the demand. Many of the youngmothers who come in for labour are still atschool and can hardly take care of themsel-ves,” says Allyson.
On a table in her living room she spreadout the cute and colourful knitted sets.
“Fourty down...hundreds to go! But Ican’t do it alone. Likeme, theremust bema-ny other community members out therewho loves knitting, have some spare timeand would like to join a knitting group.”
“Ive knitted all my life and it is a wonder-fully, relaxing and therapeutic hobby. Youcan sit and knit all day!V Contact Allyson on 0829795590 to get involvedin this worthwhile project. or to donate wool.

whichwas well supported by the local aut-horities. The race winners prize givinghad Western Cape minister of economicopportunities,MrAlanWinde, who is alsoa keen cyclist, as guest speaker. byeenkoms aan of af is, vind dit nou eers-komende Vrydag by die Jan Burger-sport-kompleks in Parow plaas.

Imran Nackerdien (100*), Jona-than Schwerin (62), Gio Hulley (42*) en
Mario Stoop (32) was die Edgemead-kolwerswat so mooi vasgeskop het.
