In that post, the complainant cited poor quality of the fish cuts used by the restau- rant, as well as poor service and customer relations. The blog post was viewed about 60 000 times, the complainant later stated. Owner of Asian-Asia, Nancy Liu, spoke to TygerBurger to clear the air after yet anoth- er complaint was levelled at her restaurant. TygerBurger went to investigate the quali- ty of the food and the hygiene of the estab- lishment last Saturday. The handling of the food in the restaurant and the neatness of its personnel, as well as their hygiene, were similar to many other sushi establishments frequented by this re- porter. A client at the restaurant at the time, told TygerBurger he ate there regularly. “I find no fault with the restaurant,” said the cus- tomer. “We regularly eat here. Dean Scheepers, a security guard on duty atthe time, confirmed thebottle-throwing inci-dent. “I know the place has a high personnelturnover,” he said. “During the day littlehappens, but there have been incidents inthe evenings,” he said.“The person in question was hysterical.
She stood at the security desk crying afterthe alleged incident,” Scheepers said.A person claiming to be Nancy’s lawyer,
contacted TygerBurger on Monday.“How much more must this poor woman
go through? This is the third time somethinglike this hashappened. There are a lot of peo-ple trying to influence the restaurant, inclu-ding the media – it is illegal and I will puttogether a report on your reporting,” theman said.“Thiswoman (Nancy) is a foreigner trying
to make a living,” he said.
During the incident last year, the blog postwriter claimed Nancy fired a waiter after heallegedly confirmed the presence of an in-sect in the sushi.Nancy said the complainant and the wai-
ter were in cahoots. “He (complainant) andthe waiter were a team. This guy, he keptthreatening us. I saw the article on Face-book. That waiter was a problem. I askedhim for a work permit which he didn’t give, after three months. When I didn’t want touse his services anymore, he brought thatgroup,” she said.“They were out to destroy my business.”A report by a City of Cape Town health in-

member for health, answeredTygerBurger’squery on the matter as follows: “City Health
can confirm that complaints regarding thisrestaurant were received on 4 October 2010and again on 5 and 17 December 2014.“The complaints of December 2014 were
investigated by a senior environmentalhealth practitioner who issued an inspecti-on report setting a number of requirements.“The practitioner confirmed that the ow-
ner complied with all the items set in the in-spection report and photos of all the itemslisted were provided to him,” Mamkeli said.He added the photos were placed on file
and “thus far no further complaints havebeen received in 2015”.

kind.

Seven of Bellville’s current crime hot-spots – parking areas dotting the busi-ness centre – will soon be blocked off
to intruders by fencing and booms. This plan has been on the drawing board
for a long time to rid Bellville of “crime andgrime”.This is the hope of the City and the
VRCID, the improvement district the Cityrecently awarded clean-up contracts forthe seven parking lots.“The City and VRCID have reached an
agreement whereby the VRCID will man-age certain public parking areas on behalfof the City as from 1 July for an initial five-year period,” said Derek Bock, VRCIDCOO.“Currently, the public do not pay for
parking at these parking areas, but as soonas the VRCID and its service provider rollout the project, members of the public willneed to start paying for parking,” he said.Bock said carewas taken tokeep the costs
low compared to other business nodes. He said because theVRCID is anNPO, the
earnings from parking would be ploughedback into the immediate area.Certainparking areaswould be fenced off
and daily cleaning teams will sweep andcollect litter. It will also bemonitored by se-curity officers, he said. The VRCID is supported by the City and
the Bellville police, Bock said, to ensure the
areas are kept clean and safe.“Wealsohave theproblemof prostitution
anddrug selling taking place in these areas;it can now be more closely monitored.”He said the surrounding businesses
would be notified by pamphlet drop-offsabout intended tariffs and whom to contactfor monthly leases.“Daily parking is also available, with pay
points at these parking areas.”The seven parking areas are at Church
Square (opposite SARS), Paint City, oppo-site the Bellville Post Office, at the bottomof AJWest Street, in Bellvue Street, next toElizabeth Park, behind the Boston Centreand opposite Protea Toyota.Bock said they aimed tomakemore park-
ing areas paid-for in Bellville and Parow.“Weunderstand thatmembers of the pub-
lic may possibly be upset, but paid parkingis the norm.“If wewant Bellville CBD to attractmore
investment in terms of urban renewal, wecannot allow crime and grime to continueto flourish,” he said.Sam Pienaar, chairman of Subcouncil 6,
told TygerBurger he was excited about theprospect.“The process has been a long time com-
ing. From subcouncil’s side, we are excitedthat certain elementswill nowbeaddressedthat are very important to us,” he said.“Through this process we will see if we
can bring order to these areas and stem theabuse thereof of people turning them intosleeping and living quarters,” Pienaar said.

A teacher who lives in Ridgeworth inBellville has participated in a globalNASAmaths and science programme
for in the USA.ShaunKeyser teachesGrade 7 learners at
Bridge House School in Franschhoek andwas part of NASA’s Space Camp education-al programme.
The camp is specifically aimed at teach-erswishing to advance science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in theirschools.
A number of teams visited the US Spaceand Rocket Centre (NASA’s official visitorinformation centre for the Marshall SpaceFlight Centre) in Huntsville, Alabama.
Westley Casey from the Space Camp ex-plained in a statement that the attendeeswere tested on leadership, teamwork anddecision-making and given a number ofmissions.
Some of their experiences included astro-naut simulators and virtual tours intospace to “save” the International Space Sta-tion (ISS), Casey stated.
The groupswere given lesson plans based
on actual NASA content, which will bepassed on to their learners in their class-rooms for practical learning.
Shaun said a company called Honeywellfully sponsored his trip and one of his fa-vourite activities was the simulated para-chute jump into water.
He was part of Team Zarya, which meanssunrise in Russian, Shaun says. Zaryawas the first module of the ISS,” he said.
This module was launched into space inNovember 1998.
Casey stated the participating teamswere each made up of 15 members.
He said the campoperates throughout theyear and trainees sleep in quarters de-signed to resemble the ISS and train in sim-ulators like those used by NASA.
“Nearly 700 000 trainees have graduatedfrom Space Camp since its opening inHuntsville in 1982,” Casey said.
“Last year, children and teachers fromall50 states and 64 international locations at-tended Space Camp.”V Interested in training like an astronaut? Visitwww.spacecamp.com.

Who knew pets could donate blood?Well, they can, andhave been doingso at a Bellville animal hospital for
at least four years. This essential service to animal hospitals
across the province and country has beenrunbyDrAnnie Singh at theTygerbergAn-imalHospital (TAH) inKenridge since 2011.Singh calls the Tygerberg Pet Blood Do-
nor Clinic her “baby”.“We supply many of the animal hospitals
in the Western Cape with blood, but thereis a hospital in Pretoria which also has ablood bank,” she says.“I guess you could say we share the bur-
den to supply animal hospitals across thecountry.”Singh says just lastweek someof their do-
nor blood was sent off to Vredenburg andeven Port Elizabeth, as well as Pretoria.
Signing up“We have 60 clients [donors], mainly dogs
and about 10 cats. It is more difficult to gethold of donor cats – I’m not sure that peopleare aware of this service,” she says.“Generally, the client first has to sign on.
We need a dog of over 30 kg, which is notobese. It has to be a standard, healthy largebreed animal between one and eight yearsold,” she says.“The reason is simple: We take about
350 ml of blood at a time. With the anti-coag-ulant, a donation is about 450 ml in vol-ume,” she says. The principle is the same as for humans,
who have to be about 55kg to donate half alitre, she says.It is a little different for cats.
Sedation“Cats are normally only about three to
four kilograms in size. We take only 40 ml– 60 ml at most.”She says they don’t keep cats’ blood, it is
used immediately and only in emergencies.“Because we take so little blood, there

the donor animal feel any pain?“We do give them sedation, but this just
cuts off the edge, as it is a general anaesthet-ic. They don’t really feel any pain becauseof the sedation.“The owner comes in the morning and
has to keep them starved for the sedative. Then we do a blood count,” Singh says. They proceed with a blood smear, a para-
site check and if all is 100% okay, they pro-ceed with the sedation.“The animal goes from table to floor. We
do not have any problems with this. Theyare fed immediately as soon as the proce-dure is completed. Then they are given a de-wormer and can go home,” she says.Their donor pets donate every three

weeks, but we rotate the clients.”“We have clients as far as Hermanus.
This dog needed emergency medical assist-ance and his owner thought a good idea to‘give back’ to other pets would be to donate. When we need blood, we call on donors. Wealso have clients from the southern sub-urbs, in Claremont and such.“I’m not sure everyone knows of this ser-
vice, but we did have an open day about amonth ago. We also have a board up in ourfacilities with our donor heroes. Soon we’llstart to give them gold stars or red stars.”The donor animals “retire” at the age of

Open Streets is a global movement tomaximise the power of streets aspublic spaces. Now a Bellville orga-
nisation wants to embrace the idea. The Greater Tygerberg Partnership
(GTP) is partnering with local NGO OpenStreets Cape Town and members of theBellville community to explore the possi-bility of holding an Open Streets day inBellville in October.
The plan is to close some roads to motorvehicles, thus opening the space for peopleto walk, cycle, skateboard, play and simplyenjoy the street in new ways.
The idea behind Open Streets is to createspaces that are shared by the public andembody respect for all, the GTP stated.
This is a means to help bridge “the socialand spatial divides of our city”.
The GTP wishes to “breathe life into theBellville CBD by taking vehicles off thestreet and opening it to everyone to shareand enjoy this often overlooked publicspace”.
The GTP encouraged the entire commu-nity to take ownership of their public spa-ces as the event relies on community in-volvement.
Previous Open Streets days have beenheld in the City Bowl, Observatory andLanga.
“The Open Streets platform has the po-tential to draw people in from other partsof the city, connect different communitiesand encourages the use of public trans-port.”
Over the next two months, Open Streetsand the GTP will engage various communi-ty members to explore this initiative forBellville’s CBD. The plan includes the in-volvement of the local City ImprovementDistrict, the VRCID.
Two “Talking Streets” walks and twocommunity meetings open to all locals andbusinesses will be hosted in July, pre-emp-ting the roll-out of the initiative during thefirst two weeks in October.
“We are working towards the ideal ofstreets being public spaces that allow peo-ple to share the space in a way that is safeand provides fun for everyone,” said GTPCEO Chris O’Connor.
“Well managed public spaces can pro-vide ideal opportunities for building asense of community and enhancing qualityof life in city centres,” he said.
The initiative forms part of the GTP’s De-sirable Spaces Programme.V Contact Lauren Uppink Calderwood at lauren.up[email protected], or Marcela Guerrero Casas at mar[email protected] for more information.

Daar was die afgelope maand tweevoorvalle in die Middestad-winkel-sentrum in Bellville waarin skelms
hulself as polisiebeamptes voorgedoen het.Só sê kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder

So het ek ’ngraad 1-leerder vir ’n klasmaat, nadat sy haar lelik afgeknouhet, hoor sê: “Ek mag jou maarseermaak, want Jesus het klaarvir my sondes betaal!”

SLICE OF LIFE
Greatestdanger lurksin the homeOne in every two women killed aremurdered by their partner.
Research by the Medical ResearchCouncil, mapping trends over a decade, shows murder by a relative or loved one, often referred to as intimate femalehomicide, has become the leading causeof women being killed. Researchers foundlittle had been recorded in police docketson prior abuse history. This is alarming,as murder is seldom the first act ofviolence against an intimate partner.Perhaps if a history of abuse had beenrecorded, the murder could have beenprevented.
Children don’t fare much better. Morethan two children are murdered in SouthAfrica every day, according to the 2011/12crime statistics. Our rate of child homici-de is more than double the global avera-ge, according to the World Health Organi-sation. Over a third of these murderstake place in the child’s home and morethan a third of children are killed bysomeone they know. There was also ahigh rate of sexual assault in these cases.
In fact, over 50 children are raped dailyin our country, according to the 2013/14crime statistics. And these are just thereported cases.
These statistics should scare you. Theyshould leave you feeling disturbed. Theyshould spur you to action, either to leavea dangerous situation or help those whofind themselves in one.
Hiding behind your curtains is nolonger an option. Preventing theseatrocities is everyone’s concern.

Three of Durbanville Hills’ wines fromtheir reserve Rhinofields range havewon awards at the 2015 Sommelier Se-
lection wine competition. The 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay took
the trophy in the “full and rich” categorywhilst the 2014 Rhinofields SauvignonBlanc and 2013 Rhinofields Noble Late Har-vest were each shortlisted in the categories“elegant and classy” and “sticky’s” respec-tively.
With just under 400 wines judged blindby two panels consisting of three somme-liers each with one associate, the wines we-re evaluated not by grape varietal but moreby the style and price point.
According to organisers, the aim of thecompetition is to find the best, most dyna-mic wines available on the market, judgedon their food appropriateness.
The competition, a first for the South Af-rican wine industry, is judged solely by apanel of South African sommeliers and incategories, although unusual, which re-flect the design of a wine list for a restau-rant and hotel. These include house wines, fresh crunchy whites, voluptuous rich redsas well as beer, cider and international wi-ne.

The bumper 4th of July IndependenceDay meeting at Killarney on Saturdayis a unique American themed package.
It combines the razzmatazz of Yankeetanks, FordMustangs, chromedHarleys, theStar Spangled Banner and Billy Joel’s,“she’s like a rocket on the fourth of July”,all combined in the fifth round of the PowerSeries sponsored by Wingfield Motors. As far as racing goes, the All American
one-make V8 Masters category, with carsunashamedly based on the Ford Mustang ofold being redesigned for the track and builtby Owen Ashley in his factory/workshop atKillarney, will take pride of place.Powered by modified V8 engines produ-
cing 325kW of power through the rearwheels and driven by superstars like multi-ple former SouthAfricanSuperkart champi-on Marcel Angel, sometime Supercar title-holder Richard Schreuder, Craig Jarvis, Fa-bio Tafani and Franco Donadio, the racingis almost always close and dangerous. With reigning Formula Supercar champi-
on Nick Adcock possibly absent, the door inthis category could open for young Dayne
Angel, who has been in fine form. Others towatch include Brad Wadeley, Andrew Mof-fitt and Gareth Easom. But the biggest entry and some of the best
racing can be expected in the Midas Club-
man events from front runners like specta-cular Danie van Niekerk in his WingfieldBeemer, Nieyaaz Modack (BMW), JesseHuggett (VW Jetta) and Andre Johnson (Au-di Quattro).
The rookie to watch is going to be 15-year-old Joshua Dolinschek in the Formula Libresingle seater class. Still too young to (legally)drive on public roads, Joshua was impressi-ve as he dominated the first two rounds inwhich he competed earlier this season. Ho-wever, he was well beaten by Julian van derWatt in a more powerful car at the most re-cent meeting. It will be interesting to seehow he fares during the meeting on Satur-day.At the other end of the scale, the popular
54-year-old Danie (van Killarney) Maritz isa veteran motorcyclist astride the sameGSX-R750 Suzuki that carried him to victoryin the 1987Western Province championship.Incredibly though, this super-fit rider is lap-ping even faster now than he did more than28 years ago.Aimed at the whole family, the day is also
going to include a Breakfast Run for streetlegal motorcycles, a kiddies playgroundmanned by minders and an American stylehot-dog eating contest in the clubhouse. There are 18 races for cars and motorcy-
cles on the programme, the first of which isdue off after final practise and qualifyingsessions at 10:00.

There was no mistaking the smile on Tre-vor Mahoney’s face when he birdied the18th atKuilsRiverGolf Club to claimvicto-ry in the Kuils River Classic last Wednes-day.The Pearl Valley golfer put on a classy
performance on his way to a four-under 68and a two-stroke victory on 10-under-par206 over reigning Curro SA Juniors Inter-national championAltinvanderMerweonthe IGT Cape.“This is such a bigmonkey off my back,”
said Mahoney as he hoisted the R12 000winner’s cheque sponsored by The Houseof Machines. “I came here with a very spe-cific game plan and I executed it. I feels re-ally great to get the job done again.”Van derMerwe, fromBellville Golf Club,
closed with a 67 to finish second, whileSunshine Tour champions Christiaan Bas-son (67) and Peter Karmis (68) and BolandamateurArmandtScholtz (70) shared thirdon 209.Overnight leader Matthew Kent slipped
to joint sixth on 210 after a 73 with Rhys
West (70).Mahoneymade aname forhimself on the
amateur circuit before he turned pro in2010, but lack of funds forced the SAGDBgraduate to take back his amateur statustwo years later.“I started working at Pearl Valley Golf
Estates and I competed for Boland until so-mepeople at PearlValley offered to financemy return to the pro circuit,” he explained. He promptly won the Vusi Ngubeni Qua-
lifying School in January to secure hisSunshineTour card for the 2015 season, butafter six months of missed cuts, Mahoneywas running out of patience. He entered the Kuilsrivier Classic ho-
ping to find a way to get back on track.“The frustrating thing is that I’m not
playing poorly,” he said.“My game is solid, but I’m not scoring.
It starts wearing you down when you areplaying well and consistently, but con-stantlymissing the cut. Itmade sense tometo play the IGT Cape while the SunshineTour is on a break, because I needed to
break this streak.“I knew there would be pressure this
week because we had a really strong field.Peter and Christiaan are very experiencedand Rhys has been making waves on theSunshineTour. Therewas a bunch of otherSunshine Tour pros competing, so I knewthe pressure would be on.”Mahoney set himself two goals for the
week – to start with a red number and fi-nish in double figures.“The IGT Tour guys set the courses up
tough so amateurs can get used to what toexpect on the Sunshine Tour,” he said.“Breaking par would tick the first box.”“I had 14 birdie chances in that second
round, but I only made two,” he said. “Ikept myself in the mix because I stayed pa-tient and didn’t make mistakes.“Setting goals is very important and tic-
king the boxes has really given me a boostof confidence. I know I can turnmy seasonaround, so I just need to take this win andfeed off it in my next start on the SunshineTour.”

Cathy Carstens is the onlyfemale cyclist to beincluded in the Legendsof the Pedal hall of fame.
STEHAN SCHOEMAN
Being the only female cyclist to be in-ducted in the Legends of the Pedal hallof fame is nothing short of remarkable.
But Cathy Carstens has had a superb careerthat began back in 1984 and at the age of 52this Brackenfell resident is still on her bike, with no intention of quitting anytime soon.
“Before I started cycling I was a WesternProvince 800mathlete, but a serious knee in-jury forcedme to quit and that is how I start-ed cycling,” said Cathy.
Her list of achievements reads like theper-fect script. In 1985 she set the 3000m SouthAfrican track record and won over 300 funrides between 1985 and 1990.
In 1985 she won the mixed tandem sec-tion of the Argus Cycle Tour. The follow-ing year she broke the Argus record forwomen by more or less 30 minutes. “I stillremember that day, everything was justgoing very well and I can’t remember theprecise time, but I beat the record by abouthalf an hour. After that dream race, I wonit for the next four consecutive years.”
After winning the national champion-ships in 1990, Cathy took a 12-year breakin which she raised her two children andstarted her own physiotherapy practice inBrackenfell where she is still workingwith top sportsmen and women includingMariska Strauss, the 2014 African XCOMTB champion, Peter-John Waterboer
(SA schools hurdler), Alicia Visser (WP tug ofwar), Zeeke Norris (K1 kickboxer) and Jonat-han Forlee (national under-20 basketball play-er), to name a few.
After her 12-year absence she made a come-back at the age of 41. Two years later, compet-ing with the best in the country, she showedher class by being ranked second in SouthAfri-ca.
Further accolades include gold medals at theSA veteran championships from 2007 to 2010.She took silver at the World Cup in Austria in2005 and 2006 and gold in 2009.At theWorldVet-eran UCI Road Champs in Austria she claimedsilver in 2005 and 2006 and won gold in 2008.
One of her proudest moments remains her
overallWestern Province Cyclist of the Yearaward back in 2008. “What made this awardso special for me was the fact that the awardwas for both men and women. So to walkaway with that award being acknowledgedthe very best cyclist irrespective of genderwas fantastic.”
For now, there is no stopping Cathy. Sheis still active on her road bicycle and themountain bike bug has also bitten her. “Forme it is all about staying fit and healthy, andwith mountain bike events it is a differentway of seeing how beautiful our country is.
“I have overcomemany injuries inmy lifeand I have realised if you never give up ev-erything exists as a possibility.”
