KIDSPORT CALGARY & AREA
ANNUAL REPORT
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
For KidSport, 2019 marked a couple of big milestones - 24 Years of
supporting kids in Calgary and area, assisting a total of over 50,000
kids, and expanding our organization to include free equipment in
addition to fee assistance! Through a continued commitment, hard
work and passion to continue to deliver on KidSport’s mission,
our team was able to once again deliver on our promise to our
community to not turn away anyone that is qualified for our
assistance. We are steadfast in our commitment to ensure
that every kid needing our assistance gets a chance to
play. We are very excited to have expanded our ability
to deliver on our mission in 2019 with the merger
of the Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank into our
organization giving us the ability to now provide free
equipment in addition to registration fee assistance
all through one organization.
We are grateful that in 2019 we were able to
improve upon our fundraising in 2018, which
was a very tough year. In 2019 we cultivated
new partnerships, stewarded existing
partnerships and set the course for what
we hope will be an amazing 2020 as we
celebrate 25 years of KidSport here in
our community and across Alberta. We
enter each year with great optimism
for what our team and organization
are able to accomplish. As we
entered 2020, we are excited
to share all of the amazing
content, stories and initiatives
we have built to engage our
community around our
25th anniversary.
In the fall of 2019 we announced the merger of Comrie’s Sports
Equipment Bank into the KidSport Calgary family resulting
in the combination of two grassroots organizations that are
breaking down the barriers facing low income families when it
comes to access to sport for their kids. The merger brings both
organizations under the leadership of one board with the focus
on providing the families we support with both services under
one roof and one process. This expansion of KidSport to include
the Sports Equipment Bank also gives our donors, partners,
sponsors, volunteers, ambassadors and sport partners the ability
to support both organizations in a simple and impactful way.
Our work is not done! 2020 is a huge year for us as we celebrate
the past as well as build for the future as more and more
kids and their families are needing our assistance each year.
Economic struggles and a global pandemic will make 2020 more
challenging then we had imagined even a few months ago. We
will not let this deter us. We firmly believe sport will be more
important than ever as we band together as a community to
overcome COVID-19 and look to restart our daily lives. Sport
will be an outlet that will unite us once again while ensuring
no one in our community is left behind. What sport looks like
when it does return may be different, but the power it has to
inspire, motivate, develop and grow our community’s kids will
not change. The need for KidSport to open the doors to sport
opportunities for the families who need us most will be on the
rise. For our organization to rise to this significant challenge that
lies ahead, we will need the support of you and our community
by our side so we can make sport possible again. Together we
will overcome these hurdles and leverage the power of sport to
unite our community once again!
WILSON ACTON, KIDSPORT CALGARY & AREA BOARD CHAIR
We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and
all should be given the opportunity to experience the
positive benefits of organized sport. KidSport provides
support to children in order to remove financial barriers
that prevent them from playing organized sport.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
2020 is the 25th Anniversary for our local KidSport chapter here in Calgary & Area. This is a milestone
year for our organization as we look to celebrate the past 25 years, as well as paving the way for the
next 25 years of KidSport positively impacting our community.
We are celebrating 25 years here in Calgary and across Alberta as KidSport opened our
doors throughout the province for the first time in 1995. That year our local chapter
led by some amazing volunteers supported 92 kids! 25 years later we are set to
support over 6,000 kids with sport registration fee assistance and another 3,000
kids with no cost equipment through our Comrie’s Sports Bank program.
To make this year as big as it can be, we need you to join us. Whether you are a
local business, sports team, volunteer, donor, service group, family foundation,
community association or sports organization we have a role for you to play as we
make 2020 our biggest year yet.
Sport plays a critical role in the development of our kids. This is what led to the
development of the backbone of our 25th Anniversary which is focused around the
concept of When we play, we learn! This simple concept using key sport skills
like hard work, respect, perseverance, play, listen, don’t win, practice
and help others to fill in the blank.
Check out www.kidsport25.com to learn all the
ways you can get involved including: becoming
a sponsor, supporting an upcoming event,
volunteering, donating, joining the Coach the
Coach campaign, getting yourself involved in

our community! #KidSport25
5,717 kids were assisted and over $1.7 million dollars
were invested back into our local sports community and
economy to ensure KidSport kids had the support they
needed so they could play! 2019 brought in a record
number of kids assisted, and dollars distributed for our
local KidSport chapter here in Calgary & Area. This is an
exceptional statement to make following a challenging
year for fundraising in 2018.
We continue to focus on strong governance and oversight
for our organization to ensure the donor dollars we
receive are focused on getting more kids in the game.
We continue to try and find new ways to raise more
sustainable dollars to ensure we can provide the life
changing investment into local kids who need us. The
immense impact and investment we have on our local
sports community is often an understated reality of the
millions of dollars we send out in sport registration fees
to our sport club partners.
2020 is a big year as we work to use our 25th Anniversary
year to raise more local dollars than ever before. These
dollars will continue to contribute to the current need
that continues to rise. They will help us build sustainability
as we try and grow our managed fund, and will allow us
to consider important decisions like raising our annual
funds available per child that are needed to keep up with
the ever growing cost of sport. We are 100% community
funded so this will only happen with further involvement
of our donors, event partners, sport clubs, corporate
partners and sponsors.
We cannot continue to make all of this happen without
the support of our community. It is you who can help
us by investing your time and dollars to ensure KidSport
Calgary & Area is always in the position to make sport
possible for those less fortunate in our community.
*2019 financial information above is unaudited. KidSport Calgary
& Area Financials are audited annually by KPMG. The 2019 audited
Financial Statements will be available on our website following the audit
completion and our AGM in April 2020.
