Twitter Communities can Provide Asynchronous

Conversations

• Conversations of about resources/supports often continue

well after the chat

• Can do the same for professional resources and

collaborations

Page 26: Twitter Chats and Why You Cant Miss These Conversations

Starting your own chat, part 1

• Think through why

• Do you have enough to talk about to do so once, once a month, or

once a week?

– Think about the work required to promote, prep, and moderate

the chat for each of those scenarios

– What happens if you’re busy during a chat? Guest moderator, or

cancel?

• Pick a short, easy-to-distinguish hashtag

• Pick a date and time

• Need a website, or not?

– How will you point people to basic info about the chat?

Page 27: Twitter Chats and Why You Cant Miss These Conversations

Starting your own chat, part 2

• Decide if you will always moderator, or if you’ll share moderation duties

– Decide to create a moderator account, or use your own

• Decide how your chat will be run

– How will you identify and pick topics for each chat?

– What are the rules?

– How will you capture/curate content after the chat?

• Publicize your chat

• Host your first chat, and keep learning as you go!

@DanaMLewis key takeaways:

• Look before you leap: seek to understand the tone, style of the chat before jumping in

• Avoid self-promotion

• Moderating chats is a lot of work; often there is an existing chat to meet your needs.

• Community is the best part of chats! You’ll be surprised about the strong interdisciplinary relationships you can build

Page 29: Twitter Chats and Why You Cant Miss These Conversations
