The critical role women play Throughout the year, not just during Women's Month in August, Anglo American Platinum appreciates the significant contribution women make to our operations, our host communities and at home. We asked some community members' why we should honour women in society.

"Women are strong! We just want to be able to make a living and raise our

children and grandchildren."

Letty Thobejane (55), Ditwebeleng

"In the past, the women of this country stood together for liberation and their voices are important. They should continue to stand together today and speak out against injustices. Women are nurturers and we need to honour their beauty, but also their strength."Jack Selowa (27), Burgersfort

”Woman within our communities and the workplace should be embraced and supported throughout the

year. Women are not to be undermined, for they displayed their strengths and worth when about 20 000 women marched to the union buildings in 1956. Women deserve to be treated with respect

and afforded the same opportunities as us (men). Long gone are the days when a women’s place was

said to be the kitchen. We men should stand together against the abuse of women and children."

Fortune Sekhukhune (29), Mpetse

"I want people to respect women in society. We are mothers, sisters and wives and should be treated with honour and respect every day."

Sekina Mafane (38), Moroke

"I love buying and selling things. It is not always easy to make enough money to feed our families and sometimes we suffer. However, every morning, we get up and go to work, because we are responsible."

The elections will be conducted under the watchful eye of the

independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to ensure a free and fair election.

Voters can make their way to the following tribal authorities' premises on 14 to 25 August:

3 Ga-Mampa; 3 Magadimane Ntweng; 3 Ga-Mashishi; 3 Phashaskraal; 3 Phasha Makgalanoto; 3 Ga-Makgopa; 3 Ga-Kgwete (Nareng

Thokwane); 3 Swazi-Mnyamane; and 3 Ga-Mashabela.

Along with the IEC, the SAPS, and the Fetakgomo-Greater Tubatse Municipality will be present to ensure the safety of the voters. The voting results will be counted by the IEC and will be announced as soon as the official counting has been completed.

CEF 2017 elections every vote counts!Maintaining a healthy relationship with our communities is of utmost importance to Anglo American Platinum. From 14 to 25 August, the Community Engagement Forum (CEF) elections will take place at the nine tribal authorities premises in Twickenham Project’s host communities.

Twickenham Project will only observe the proceedings and will in no way participate in this community election.

The purpose of the CEF will be to enhance open discussions between Twickenham Project, the traditional authorities, the community, the local municipality, local business and government on issues directly relating to the project’s operations.

The forum will also serve as a platform to discuss the community and Twickenham Project’s concerns and oversee the resolution of community issues relating to the operation.

It will provide advice on how to best communicate relevant information to the broader community.

“The CEF and Twickenham Project will work together towards outcomes that will benefit the host communities and the project,” says

Twickenham project senior social performance  manager Jeffrey Ngobeni.

“With the newly-elected CEF, we will encourage community participation to promote engagement and economic growth through sustainable rural community development,” he says.

VOTE IN THE CEF ELECTIONS!

14 to 25 August 2017

“It is important to come and vote to ensure that representatives are elected openly and democratically. This will empower communities to engage with Twickenham Project in an organised, positive way.”

Twickenham Project consults with the community leaders, local government and NGOs to ensure that our investments benefit the nine tribal areas surrounding our operation.

To be productive, safe, responsible and sustainable, our operations must live alongside thriving communities.

They are the places our people call home, our closest neighbours and stewards of the land entrusted to us for a period of time.

Our SLP projects are aimed at promoting economic growth, employment and the advancement of social and economic development of the areas in which we operate.

We thank everyone who attended the first round of SLP handovers on 23 June at Moseki Seconday School in Ga-Makgopa and Maseven Clinic in Maseven.

Meaningful transformation

Platinum's Social and Labour Plan (SLP) projects are aimed at promoting

employment and advancement of the social and economic welfare of all South Africans, while ensuring economic growth and socio-economic development.

Community members, government officials and Anglo American Platinum representatives witnessed Twickenham Project officially handing over several completed projects to its host communities on 23 June.

The initiatives handed over on 23 June included the construction of a primary school, renovations at four schools, road development, the construction of a primary healthcare clinic and two agriculture projects in Der Brochen and Twickenham.

Demonstrating Platinum’s

commitment to uplifting its community, Twickenham Project selected Moseki Secondary School in Ga-Makgopa to host its handover event, while the new Maseven Clinic in Maseven village was the official venue for the Der Brochen Project event. Both venues formed part of the SLP projects handed over by Platinum.

The SLP initiatives promote economic growth, employment, social and economic welfare of local communities. Combined, the projects handed over on

Setlamorago Primary School Twickenham Project constructed a new school with a state-of-the-art education facility including classrooms, a library, a science laboratory, an administration block, ablution facilities, walkways and a guardhouse. More than 140 learners are benefiting from this facility.

Mpetje Primary School Platinum renovated a school building and constructed a new administration block, new classrooms and a children's play area. About 483 learners from Morapaneng, Ditwebeleng and Dithabaneng villages attend the school.

Moseki Secondary SchoolPlatinum renovated classrooms to accommodate the growing number of learners from Makgopa, Seelane, Mosotse, Serafa and Ga-Mashabela

23 June created more than 170 contractual jobs for local community members and totalled R223 million.

Platinum chief executive officer Chris Griffith said: “We are pleased to handover these projects, which bring important improvements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as well as economic opportunities through farming.”

These efforts are taking place against a challenging backdrop. South Africa’s mining industry has been in decline

villages. A new administration building, a science laboratory and ablution facilities were also constructed.

Phase two development of Makgopa RoadPlatinum assisted in the construction of a 20km stretch of a tar road from Atok, passing through Ga-Mashabela to Ga-Selepe area, ensuring better access to transport for residents of surrounding areas. A partnership agreement with Roads Agency Limpopo was signed in August 2016 for phase three to construct an additional 20km road by 2018. To date, 2.2km of tar road connecting Seelane to the Makgopa has been completed.

for several years due to, in part, political and regulatory uncertainty, with a direct impact on competitiveness, investment and economic growth.

Anglo American will continue to work towards supporting recovery, investment, growth and transformation in the mining industry to benefit all. The company will play its part to ensure South Africa is again a preferred investment mining destination.

Committing to the host communitiesPlatinum is proud to hand-over nine completed SLP initiatives in communities around the Twickenham and Der Brochen projects. In Twickenham, the company has implemented and handed over the following initiatives...

The march was to be a turning point in the role that women play in our society. Today, in August, we not only acknowledge the role women play

in our country's history with pride, but are proud to see the continued role of women in the workplace and society.

Anglo American Platinum’s transformation programme aims to create a workforce that reflects the diversity of the South African population. In pursuit of this goal, we have been striving to create an environment that makes transformation possible and indeed that encourages it.

Our employment equity status shows satisfactory progress towards achieving equitable representation of designated groups across all occupational levels and categories of the workforce.

South Africa has seen a rise in women qualifying in technical employment. There are more incentives than ever for women entering the industry. Bursaries have been introduced to attract women to mining, giving them the opportunities they need to develop key specialised skills.

It is my hope that you will join South Africans on 9 August to celebrate the women in our country and take time to thank them for impacting our lives as mothers, wives, sisters and colleagues.

JeffreyJeffrey Ngobeni, senior social performance manager, Twickenham Project.

August is Women's MonthSouth Africa commemorates Women's Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.

TWICKENHAM TIMES AUGUST 2017 7EDUCATION

Did you know platinum is used to make devices called fuel cells that make and store electricity?

Just one of the many ways Anglo American Platinum makes South Africa a better place to live.

WE KEEP THE LIGHTS ON

Did you know? Platinum is the world’s heaviest precious metal.

5 x A5 Advert Campaign _2016.indd 4 2017/01/11 2:56 PM

It was Nelson Mandela who said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you

can use to change the world”. In June, Twickenham Project hosted a visit from the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) and the best- performing female learners from local schools.

The initiative ran alongside the ‘Take a Girl Child to Work’ initiative, started by the Department of Education. It involves companies hosting female learners for the day at work. Twickenham Project treated eight girls to an underground tour and an information session in the administration department.

“The session left us feeling we had to do more to contribute towards building a beter future for our younger generation,”

Offering hope to schools! To make a real difference tomorrow, we’re preparing our future leaders now. Anglo American Platinum offers all kinds of opportunities, training and financial support for students and graduates. Two dynamic women from Twickenham Project, Precious Tshishonga an Caroline Manaka, have stepped up to ensure that Grade 12 learners in the host communities know how to access those opportunities.

says Tshishonga, a mining shift supervisor at Twickenham Project. “Both the learners and teachers had limited information about careers, bursaries and universities.”

Manaka, a shaft surveyor at Twickenham Project, adds that they felt that they needed to help schools in the host communities by imparting knowledge to the children. “Our hope is to increase the Grade 12 pass rate and the university level intake of learners from our local schools,” says Manaka.

Tshishonga and Manaka identified 18 schools to start the initiative. They hope it will attract the attention of businesses in the area. “We would like to get businesses and individuals involved to ensure the longevity of this initiative,” says Tshishonga.

A workshop, aimed at both male and female Grade 10 to 12 learners, was held at Maboragane Secondary School at Ntswaneng village in July. During the workshop, the women focused on motivating the students to study, discussing career paths, university admissions and bursary admissions.

The initiative will include weekly meetings with the learners to assist them with academic work, personal issues and university and bursary admissions.

Anyone who would like to get involved in the schools initiative or would like to assist by donating groceries, clothes, sanitary towels, toiletries or stationery, can contact Tshishonga on 083 967 4645 or Manaka at 082 789 1807.

“DIFFERENCE MAKERS... Twickhenham Project employees Precious Tshishonga and Caroline Manaka.

“There are many underlying issues that contribute to the low pass rate in the area, including infrastructure, equipment, poverty or health issues. How can children listen and focus in class when they are hungry or work in a class room without electricity?"

Caroline Manaka

GAINING KNOWLEDGE... The top academic performing girls from Manawe, Mogolahlogo, Makuane, Serokolo, Lotloulela, Poo, Magobanye and Tshihlo Secondary Schools had to dress in protective gear before going on their underground tour with Twickenham Project safety officer Elias Mokgari.

EDUCATION PLANS... Precious Tshishonga (wearing a hat) and Caroline Manaka (in the pink shirt) with some of the Grade 10 to 12 learners at Maborangane Secondary School.

8 AUGUST 2017 TWICKENHAM TIMES

Oh George! You really know how to spoil me…I am so lucky to have a “blesser”!

Anything you want, darling. My women only get the best.

Marayza, look what George bought me! Next month I am going overseas – and

George is paying for everything!

How’s Thandi doing, Marayza?

Do you know him?

You should tell Thandi to stay away from George! Don’t worry, I will!

That’s Thandi’s blesser with

another woman!

That guy is bad news.

What is it Marayza?

I am a bit worried about Thandi. I don’t know if George is such a great guy if he is

interested in young girls.

“I told him no. I’d much rather do things right and not worry about going to jail.”

I told George I am pregnant with his baby and he said he wanted nothing

to do with me anymore.

Now I can’t fi nish school and I must raise this baby

on my own.

What?!.... He left me anyway.

I am so sorry George used you like that! We

will fi gure something out.

Thandi, I saw George today with another woman, and Themba said he deals in drugs!

“Drugs harm your body and can make you addicted.” “It can also get you arrested.”

One day at Thandi’s house…

The next day in the park…

Later that evening…

See what happens in the next issue!

Well…she’s got a blesser now and he buys her everything she wants!

Yes. He wanted to give me drugs to use and sell. He said I could get rich like him and drop out of school.
