Rain, rain, and even more rain...that was the story of early to mid July for much of North Iowa as a handful of summer storms swept through the area. Unforunately for many, these storms were accompanied by strong winds, hail, and flooding. The most severe of these storms came at 2:30 A.M. the morning of July 7th. Overhanging trees were the cause of the outage for over 120 of the 200 members without power early that morning. I’d like to thank our dedicated line crew for their hard work to restore power quickly and safely. I’d also like to recognize them for their constant efforts to inspect and improve line, poles, and other equipment year-round. By going the extra mile, we are able to increase reliability and minimize the outages we do have during severe weather. In return, I’d also like to thank you, our member-owners, for your paence during these interrupons in service and for calling in to report your outage. We’d like to remind you to always contact us if you are out of power. The more calls we receive, the easier it is to determine where the cause is. In addion, it is not uncommon for a fallen tree branch or lightning strike to be effecng only the tap line heading to your home. By calling in, you guarantee that we know about your outage and get your power back on with everyone else’s. I’d also like to thank you for your cooperaon with the tree trimming we do at Heartland. A majority of our outages are sll caused by overhanging tree limbs or trees close to the power line. With your support in tree- trimming, we can connue to make our system more reliable. On a different note, I want to menon that over the past year, we have been studying our rates to ensure that we meet the requirements of our lenders and that each class of membership is paying their fair share of the costs. We will be finalizing the rate study later this summer and will be talking with the board to determine if rate changes will be necessary. Please stay tuned for more informaon.

In return, I’d also like to thank you, our member-owners, for your patience during these interruptions in service and for calling in to report your outage. We’d like to remind you to always contact us if you are out of power. The more calls we receive, the easier it is to determine

where the cause is. In addition, it is not uncommon for a fallen tree branch or lightning strike to be effecting only the tap line heading to your home. By calling in, you guarantee that we know about your outage and get your power back on with everyone else’s.

I’d also like to thank you for your cooperation with the tree trimming we do at Heartland. A majority of our outages are still caused by overhanging tree limbs or trees close to the power line. With your support in tree-trimming, we can continue to make our system more reliable.

On a different note, I want to mention that over the past year, we have been studying our rates to ensure that we meet the requirements of our lenders and that each class of membership is paying their fair share of the costs. We will be finalizing the rate study later this summer and will be talking with the board to determine if rate changes will be necessary. Please stay tuned for more information.

- Always assume downed power lines are live and dangerous. Stay away and keep others away. If you are driving and come in contact with a power line, stay in your vehicle.

- Never enter a flooded basement if electrical outlets are submerged. The water could be energized.

- Make sure electricity and gas are turned off before entering storm- damaged buildings.

Two area food banks were seeing double last month as Heartland Power Cooperative board members handed each of the organizations not one, but two $1,000 checks.

The first donation was from Heartland Power Cooperative. The second, a generous matching grant from CoBank, our primary financing partner, through its Sharing Success program.

Sharing Success was established in 2012 to celebrate the International Year of the Cooperative. The response from the bank’s customers was overwhelmingly positive and the bank has renewed the program each year since. Since the program’s inception, CoBank and its customers have together provided nearly $14 million in support to charitable organizations across the nation.

The $4,000 in donations will be used to help the Mitchell County Food Bank in St. Ansgar and Neighborhood Food Bank in Forest City provide food and supplies to needing area residents.

TWICE AS NICE

Seeing Double: HPC Director Mark Kingland (R)presents two $1,000 checks to representatives of the Neighborhood Food Bank in Forest City.

Heartland Power will be sponsoring an appliance pick-up on qualifying appliances the week of September 12-16. Call our office by September 1 to have your extra working refrigerator, freezer, or window air conditioner picked up during that week free of charge.

Other appliances may be collected at a cost of $15 per appliance, which will need to be paid to our pick up service provider the day of pick up. Contact our office so these additional appliances may be added to the list.

Please have appliances sitting out and easily accessible. No appliances will be carried out of basements.

That extra refrigerator or freezer in the garage is probably costing you more money than you think. Did you know that old refrigerators and freezers could use up to five times more electricity than a newer, energy efficient model? Ditch the second refrigerator, or consider purchasing a new energy efficient model.

Are these energy hogs costing you?
