Dear friends, In certain circles, it is fashionable to speak of the “kin-dom” of God because the word “kingdom” can sound, to some, too imperial or masculine or magisterial or hierarchical. “Kin-dom” is intended to evoke some thing more familial, as in “kin”, and represent a more inclusive vision of God’s human family. I must say, of the play-on-words that pop-up from time-to-time, “kin-dom” is one that I quite like. It certainly started me thinking the first time that I heard it. If God’s kingdom is about anything, it is about recognising God’s parental tenderness to all, which in turn, unites us as sisters and brothers — God’s kindred. While this can sound all very nice, it has particular implications for our recognition of the dignity and worth of every human being. Any sense of “us” and “them” crumbles before such a vision of the human family. Yet we can remain so tribal, so defined by status, education, ethnic background, or the colour of our skin. It makes us feel safe when we can establish clearly defined boundaries which separate rather than unite. Jesus was being deliberately provocative when he announced to the religious leaders of his day that they were on the outer: “Tax collectors (the crocked and untrustworthy) and prostitutes (the immoral and unclean) are making their way into the kingdom of God before you”. The kin of Jesus are certainly an unlikely and unruly bunch. St. Paul offers some helpful advice today about how we can shape our minds and values to Jesus’ vision. St. Paul says, “In humility regard others as better than yourselves. Look not to your own interests but to the interests of others”. Paul’s words are not about making ourselves compulsively small—in truth, Paul’s words are not really about “me” and who I am; they are about the other person. The other person is a person of value, just as much as you are. The other person is a person of dignity, just as much as you are. The other person is a person of worth, just as much as you are. This new way of thinking does not come easily because we also need to unlearn all our prejudices. This is why true discipleship takes a lifetime because we must learn and unlearn all at the same time. In choosing to see one another as kindred, we say “Yes” to working in God’s vineyard and building God’s kingdom. Fr. Dear friends,

In certain circles, it is fashionable to speak of the “kin-dom” of God because the word “kingdom” can sound, to some, too imperial or masculine or magis ter ia l or hierarchical.

While this can sound all very nice, it has particular implications for our recognition of the dignity and worth of every human being. Registration for Mass Registration for all Masses is essential (especially for Sunday Masses). Registration can be done via the Cathedral website. Registration for Sunday Mass

closes at midday on Friday. If you do not have the resources to register on-line, please contact us on 3324 3030. The following guidelines remain in place: If you are feeling unwell, please stay home and

participate in Mass on-line via the Cathedral website;

Physical distancing of 1.5m, whilst standing in the queue to check-in, during Mass and whilst in the Communion procession, is essential;

Hand hygiene (sanitising your hands before entering the church and when exiting);

Respiratory hygiene (coughing/sneezing into elbow);

The number of people in our churches at any one time must be strictly adhered to.

If you have registered for a particular Sunday Mass but have not checked in by the end of the Processional Hymn, your place may be re-allocated.

Thank you for your co-operation. Summer is here! Now that the hotter weather has arrived, we have opened all the doors of the Cathedral to allow the flow of air. However, because of the government restrictions and requirements for COVID tracing, entry to the Cathedral is still only through the one side door. Your continued co-operation is appreciated. Organ Maintenance The Cathedral Jubilee Pipe Organ is undergoing major maintenance. To enable maintenance to proceed as smoothly and quickly as possible, the Cathedral and Chapel will be closed from approx. 2.00pm each afternoon Monday to Friday. The Chapel will re-open at 4.00pm to enable the 4.30pm Reconciliation and 5.10pm Mass to be held in St Stephen’s Chapel. Moving into the future, we may need to adjust the opening times of the Cathedral and Chapel depending upon the availability of volunteer marshals.

Resumption of 7.30pm Mass Next Sunday evening Mass 4th October 2020 the 7.30pm Mass will resume.

Last weekend our parish held an appeal for the Annual

Catholic Campaign in support of the important Catholic ministries in our Archdiocese. Thank you to everyone who responded generously to the Archbishop’s call for support. If you didn’t get a chance to make a gift last week, there is still time. If you took the envelope home, please pop it in the mail or leave it here on your way out after service. Your tax-deductible gift will be put straight to work by funding the vital Catholic agencies in our local community. Thank you for your generosity. Healing Mass—Bardon Are you in need of healing? Consider the Common Good on October 31 Catholic Social Teachings prompt us to consider the Common Good and to pay particular attention to those who are vulnerable, marginalised, or who often ‘fall through the cracks’. As we grapple with the challenges of a COVID world, the Catholic Bishops of Queensland have called Catholics to consider Catholic Social Teaching as they prepare to participate in the Queensland State Election on October 31. For more information about Catholic Social Teaching and to find out more about the issues you might reflect on when you cast your vote visit https://bit.ly/3mhPzY3

Super flumina Babilonis,

Upon the rivers of Babylon,

there we sat down and we

wept, as we remembered you,

O Zion.

Antiphon: Jesus, in your heart we find love of the Father and mankind; these two loves to us impart divine love in a human heart.

May we stand within the fire Of your Sacred Heart and raise To our God in joyful choir All creation's song of praise.

In our hearts from roots of pride Deadly growths of evil flower; But from Jesus' wounded side Streams the sacramental power.

To the depths within your heart Draw us with divine desire, Hide us, heal us, and impart Your own love's transforming fire.

At the conclusion of the Introit, a bell is sounded. The assembly

responds as the Choir and Ministers process towards the altar

with the following translation of the Introit text. The first verse

(which is the Antiphon) is repeated after the final verse.

Antiphon: On earth, in heaven, down below, At Jesus' name all bend their knee; For he became obedient Unto his death upon the Tree. Let us acclaim our Lord as King; In hymns and psalms let praises ring.

Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry Have ready access to your throne; Do not conceal your face from me When I am troubled and alone. Attend, O Lord, to my desire, And hasten quickly when I cry.

But you, O Lord, enthroned on high, Your name endures from age to age. You pity Zion's holy stones And show her mercy, show her grace. All kings shall fear your holy name When you rebuild her walls again.

PLEASE TAKE THIS COPY OF THE BULLETIN

WITH YOU AT THE CONCLUSION OF MASS TODAY.

All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with love, his praise forth tell, Come now before him, and rejoice.

Know that the Lord is God indeed; Without our aid he did us make; We are his flock, he does us feed, And for his sheep he does us take.

O enter then his gates with praise; Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his Name always, For it is seemly so to do.

For why? the Lord our God is good: His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, ever one.

You are the Way: in you alone from sin and death we rise; without your grace we nothing are, in you all goodness lies.

You are the Truth: your Word alone full wisdom can impart; your Word alone transforms the mind and purifies the heart.

You are the Life: the empty tomb proclaims your victory. And those who put their trust in you shall ever-more be free.
