Connectionsby Joe Lesko

The Twenty-Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time The parts that suggest a connection between the Old Testament and the New Testament make a reference to sumptuous banquets. Major religious events use a banquet filled with “rich and pure” food and wine as well in celebrating as a family. In addition weddings and any extra-ordinary events call for banquets as well. Feasts as the Passover or the joining of families in a covenant seal relationships with the Lord and per-sons involved to solidify a major jointure. Recall that the Lord and Moses called for a banquet to seal the Ten Commandments. Isaiah describes a banquet on Mount Zion to celebrate Yahweh’s kingship with His chosen people. Mount Zion is the highest point of Jerusalem; consequently, the Temple, a visible symbol of Yahweh’s presence, has been built there. The Jews use Zion and Jerusalem to have the same reference to Yahweh’s home. Isaiah reminds the exiles of the celebration at Zion when they shall return to their home and reconnect with Yahweh to symbolize the righteous relationship of eternal happiness they have with the Lord. This banquet shall be a festival of the choicest and finest food and wines. On this mountain, the highest physical point in this holy city, Yahweh shall come to uncover the earth that veils all people. The word veil refers to the buried ones covered with earth. The reference is to the destruction of death and the promise of eternal life. The sentence of death in the Book of Genesis has been canceled. The final verse praises and thanks Yahweh for His deliverance. Again Matthew’s Gospel is an episode of Jesus teaching in the Temple area where His audience has been comprised mainly of the chief priests and the and elders of the people. He has made His triumphal entry into the Jerusalem and has infuriated these religious leaders. His message to them are parables about His divine mission and by whose authority He has been sent to preach and teach to create a new covenant. Today’s address to them is a long history of God’s dealings with the Jews. It has been a series of invitations to a spiritual life and describes their reactions to God’s summons to share in these messianic blessings. The scene in this passage is again the Temple area on the Wednesday of the first Holy Week, within the shadow of Calvary. The parable is a lesson as before directed to the vain Pharisee s who have not, in their haughtiness, accepted the requisite for God’s plan for redemption and salvation for all mankind. The parable features a king and his servants who symbolize God and His prophets. This Jewish audience concludes that Jesus’ words are blasphemous and He should be arrested and killed. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus teaches that time is not too late for redemption. God always has an abundance of mercy . A call to a wedding feast centers the action of the parable. The audience is symbolic of those Jews who refuse to accept Jesus as the Messiah. He calls but they reject His call. Each group shows a perverse attitude in their rejections, a total dishonor to the king who then orders his servants to call those outside the city. These are sinners and tax collectors, considered unworthy by the religious leaders. One comes with an inappropriate garment, symbolizing one who accepts the call but has not kept the prescribed behaviors that the Lord gave to Moses and to Jesus. He has soiled his baptismal garment (sinning) “that was washed in the blood of the Lamb.” He lost his moment to repent (that is washing his garment). His place is darkness not one of light and continuous joy of the messianic blessing (the wedding banquet at end time). The “call” is not just a positive response but a prescribed life style of behaviors are included. Dire consequences occur with deviance from these behaviors that do not conform with God’s prescripted Laws and decrees. All acts has consequences. Man’s choices come from God’s gift of free will to accept or reject the gift of grace as his means of acceptance to a life of acting according to God’s Laws.

DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL (DLA) 2020 Our DLA total pledges have increased to $46,989 and the amount collected is $44,677 with 179 households having contributed. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your generosity and prayers which enabled us to surpass our Diocesan Target ($29,241) and Total Goal ($39,241), gaining at least $15,436 for our Parish needs.

10-YEAR LOAN REPAYMENT REPORT

To date, we have paid back $124,899.34 (including $11,735.90 in interest) on our $300,000 loan plus $35,294.54 interest. Because of extra payments made early, and the temporary suspension of interest payments recently, loan amortization is 20 months ahead of schedule, with full repayment expected in October, 2026, and a projected parish savings of $10,200.29. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish during

the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION allows the Lord to make known His personal interest in each of us, and to open up for us a bit of heaven on earth. Consider these words Jesus communicated via locution to a Benedictine monk: “…the underlying problem of so many souls…is…the doubt of my personal love for the soul upon whom I have set My Heart. So many begin to think, ‘He cannot possibly love me in this way or take a real interest in me’ – and so they begin to withdraw from My friendship, to flee My presence, and to greet me only from a distance as one would a passing acquaintance. You must never let this happen. Know that My Heart is set upon you with an everlasting and most tender love, that I look upon you at every moment with all the delicacy of My divine friendship, and with an inexhaustible mercy. Respond to My love by coming to me as often as you can….My Immaculate Mother feels the same way towards you. She too follows you day by day. Every-

thing you do and say interests Her maternal Heart…Dialogue with me, with My most holy Mother, and with My saints…Become the adorer I want you to be, and you will see the heavens open within your soul…you will enjoy…a heavenly joy while yet on this earth.” (In Sinu Jesu p. 84) For September 29-30, the following hours had only one adorer: 9 am, 1 am, 2 am, 3 am and 4 am. At least two adorers should be present for each hour . Thank you. CHURCH IS OPEN 24/7 for silent adoration of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle.

Everyone is encouraged to stop in each daily if possible at a convenient time, and to sign our log-in time sheet so

that we can gauge participation in this. For September, at least one adorer was present in church for at least some

part of 354 hours out of the 720 total hours. That’s almost half (49.1%). Please help us toward perpetual

adoration. These are unprecedented times that invite our full turning to the Lord. Thank you for your response.

SUMMER FESTIVAL REPLACEMENT TICKET II Festival Replacement Ticket II is available to be picked up until October 18th. Each parishioner is asked to purchase/sell at least 2 tickets. Tickets will also be available to be picked up during the week in the back of church.

Please contact Dr. Dreliszak or the rectory if you are able to sell more than 2 tickets. Your support is so great-ly appreciated and needed.
