The area is bursting with activity as locals and visitors alike make the most of the amazing environment.

Currumbin Creek is at the heart of the emerging

stand-up paddleboard scene and offers the perfect opportunity for learners to test their skills and for seasoned professionals to enjoy ideal paddling conditions.

Along the creek and out to the estuary are plenty of spots to enjoy a picnic or barbecue, or just set up for a day of fun on the water.

of the region’s surfing hotspots where you’ll see some of the best exponents of shortboard and longboard surfing in action.

A walk out to the rock lets you get close to the surfers as they negotiate channels to take off on one of the most exciting surf breaks around. When the winds pick up, the skies fill with colour as kite surfers take to the water in a combination of kiting and surfing.

At the northern side of Currumbin Estuary, you’ll discover one of the great local spots for families at the Palm Beach Parklands, with a giant playground, barbecues and picnic spaces next to one of the region’s best safe and sheltered swimming areas.

Just around the corner, take the exit off the Currumbin Bridge to discover the attractive beachside village of Currumbin.

currumbinA favourite among personal trainers and fitness fanatics, Currumbin Beach is best known for its chilled out locals who make the most of the natural surroundings and beachside living.

This is one of the region’s most picturesque stretches of beach. Between the Currumbin Estuary and the famous Elephant Rock you’ll discover amazing views to Surfers Paradise in the north and to Greenmount in the south.

Along Currumbin’s Marine Parade there’s also an eclectic mix of cafes, small boutiques and shops which all offer stylish, unique and hard-to-find items.

Following Marine Parade around to Duringan Street offers a diverse selection of cafes and restaurants serving everything from aromatic coffee and cakes through to fresh fish and chips and a-la-carte dining experiences flavoured with Currumbin’s friendly and relaxed lifestyle.

The active lifestyle of Currumbin makes this one of the great spots to experience Australia’s surf lifesaving culture.

A volunteer movement, the surf lifesavers patrol the beaches on weekends and holidays to keep the beaches safe.

A visit to the beach at dawn or dusk will usually offer the chance to see some of the region’s champion lifesavers at training as they take on the surf with paddle boards and surf skis.

Occasionally, you’ll also see some of the wooden surf boats as they dash their way through the surf, or even a surf carnival in full swing as life savers test their skills and strength against each other and the waves.

On any day of the week, the surf clubs in their unique beachfront locations also offer the chance to enjoy a cold drink or a hot meal while enjoying the million dollar views.

it’s a naturalthe Hills, valleys and coastal outcrops were formed millions of years ago from the Tweed Caldera, a massive volcanic basin stretching from Mt Warning Wollumbin to the ocean.

Within the Caldera are heritage-listed, sub-tropical rainforests harbouring a wealth of biodiversity with abundant wildlife and vegetation.

The region offers scenic drives along the coast and through the hinterland from Currumbin Valley and down to Mt Warning Wollumbin.

There’s plenty of opportunity to explore the region’s many national parks, bushwalks and climbs to experience the region’s natural assets.

One of the most scenic walks takes in Point Danger, with a beachside path stretching along Rainbow Bay, Snapper Rocks and up to the Captain Cook Memorial Lighthouse where you can take in views south to Byron Bay and north to Stradbroke Island.

For an easy rainforest walk, Mt Cougal National Park in the Currumbin Valley offers a circuit which follows natural waterfalls and streams that meander through the cool shade of the rainforest.

With an elevation of 1576 metres, the peak offers incredible views of the valleys and beaches of the Tweed Caldera.

While this climb is recommended only for the reasonably fit, it is just one of the many options to explore the region’s captivating landscapes at a pace which suits you.

when the right combination of wind and tide comes together, the famous Kirra barrels peel off from the rock groynes in perfectly liquid cylinders.

In the 1960s and 1970s, these challenging waves attracted surfing nomads who made this sun-drenched stretch of golden beach their home.

Kirra became a bohemian haven for the surfing sub-culture and was the perfect breeding ground for world champions, including Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew.

Even before the surfers discovered Kirra, it was a favourite beach destination and still retains the heritage-listed Beach Pavilion dating back to 1935.

On Kirra Point still stands the Shelter Shed in the same position since 1916, offering spectacular views north to the skyscrapers of Surfers Paradise.

Today, Kirra is one of the region’s most scenic beachside retreats.

The beachfront offers a walking and cycling path with shady picnic retreats and barbecue areas along the way.

Kirra is home to a vibrant eat street where you can enjoy breakfast as the sun rises over the beach, a lunch or an al fresco dinner and soak up the sea air.

One of the little known attractions at Kirra is the Eagle sculpture which sits on top of the hill at Kirra Point.

Take a quick detour off Marine Parade and you can discover one of the region’s most spectacular lookouts.

the beautiful beacH strip takes in the golden sands of Coolangatta Beach, Greenmount Point and the scenic enclave of Rainbow Bay.

The beaches have a great reputation for safe, protected conditions and gentle rolling surf which make them perfect for family beach holidays.

The north-facing Greenmount Beach, with the headland offering protection from the wind, benefits from near perfect conditions for swimming and sunbathing virtually all year round.

It’s little wonder that Coolangatta was a pioneering destination for sunseekers and holiday makers.

Right back to the 1890s, people began travelling to Coolangatta to enjoy the sub-tropical climate and beautiful beaches.

In 1915, the legendary Duke Kahanamuku visited the area and gave a demonstration of surfing at Greenmount Beach, inspiring some of the locals to make their own pioneering wooden surfboards and take to the waves.

But it was after the Second World War that Australians really learnt to let their hair down at the famous beach parties of the Southern Gold Coast.

During the 50s and 60s Doug Roughton, who ran the Greenmount Beach Kiosk, became known as the

Hokey Pokey Man, playing popular music from the time from the Kiosk and leading beachgoers in the Hokey Pokey Dance.

Free beach concerts also attracted thousands of weekend visitors to enjoy some of the biggest names in music at the time. This was the period that the Gold Coast became famous for fun and its renowned beach culture was born.Beachgoers in bikinis and boardshorts flocked from Brisbane and interstate to join the party atmosphere and the region prospered as Australia’s beachside entertainment capital.

Even now, every June, Coolangatta’s history as an entertainment destination is celebrated with the Cooly Rocks On Festival which features live music, dancing and parades attracting music and car enthusiasts from throughout Australia.

The old camp sites and boarding houses have made way to a mix of family-friendly accommodation, including luxury hotels and self-contained apartments with kitchen and laundry facilities. Many hotels and apartments also offer stunning ocean views and an easy walk to the beach. While so much is within walking distance, Coolangatta also provides a great hub from which to base a holiday with countless beaches, attractions and activities a short drive away.

each year the area attracts tHousands of surfers, both amateur and professional, to the point breaks along the coast.

Since the 1970s, the Southern Gold Coast has hosted major international surfing events and this tradition continues to this day.

While the many beach breaks are the best places for beginners to try out surfing for the first time, the legendary point breaks are where more experienced surfers should head for the most challenging waves.

the best known breaks include:Snapper Rocks – known as the Superbank where quick, barrelling waves peel off the rocky outcrops and continue into Rainbow Bay.

Greenmount Beach - a softer, rolling wave forming off the headland and forms into left and right hand breaks.

Kirra – the world famous, barrelling surf break formed by the wave action angling across the rock groyne and onto the inner sand banks.

The Alley – an exciting wave that quickly peels off Currumbin Rock with a challenging take off for surfers before rolling into the mouth of the estuary.

The Mt Warning Shield VolcanoThe Mt Warning Shield Volcano

The Caldera MapThe caldera of the Mt Warning Shield Volcano

straddling the Queensland border of North EasternNSW is a landform of both scenic and natural international

significance - the Mt. Warning Shield Volcano. The Volcanic action which occurred 23-20 million years ago produced a flat

shield shaped landform - not the steep-sided peak that volcanoes usually bring to mind. At nearly 2000m in height it was almost twice

the present height of Mt Warning (1157m) its' remnant magma chamberand central vent. Its lava flows reached as far as Canungra in the north,

Kyogle to the west, Lismore and Ballina in the south and as far as 100km out into the ocean, covering 5000 square kilometers. For 20 million years, wind and rain carved out a huge bowl around the central magma chamber

which still stands proud, as it is made of a harder, more erosion resistant rock. This is the caldera of the Mt Warning Shield Volcano, the largest caldera in the

southern hemisphere. The sheer escarpment, of the caldera rim and tracts of level highland radiating out in three directions, together with the central majestic Mt Warning,

combine to create a scenic landform of memorable rugged beauty.Add to this the rich volcanic soils, high rainfall and the aspect of the caldera itself on the most easterly bulge of our continent,

and you have the recipe for the natural values which make this landform a major refuge for rainforests o f W o r l d H e r i t a g e s i g n i f i c a n c e .

With Murwillumbah at its centre, the Tweed Valley stretches out to Mt Warning/Wollumbin with the villages of Crystal Creek, Chillingham, Tyalgum, Stokers Siding, Mooball and Uki all within a short, scenic drive.

To explore the Tweed Valley and discover its many hidden gems, turn off the Pacific Hwy and explore the roads that wind their way through the valley.

Whether simply a day’s sightseeing or an overnight stay in a cosy bed and breakfast retreat, it will be a rewarding detour to experience the incredible diversity of countryside.

Many visit the Tweed Valley simply for the art and craft galleries which showcase local works and leading national exhibitions in venues ranging from tiny, eclectic galleries to some of the most innovative commercial and public galleries of any regional area.

With local artists and craftspeople taking inspiration from their natural surroundings, you’ll find one-off pieces which make a unique memento or gift to take back home.

The Tweed Valley is also the region’s food bowl, and cane fields, fruit and vegetable farms and livestock all thrive in this temperate and fertile environment.

There’s plenty of opportunity to sample the best and the freshest produce at roadside stalls as well as farmers markets hosted throughout the valley.

Here you’ll find organic producers, exotic and rare fruit and vegetables as well as delicious local treats.
