General Information & Sale Notes
LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The Market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.
INSPECTION - The Sale Sheep will be available for inspection at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on the evening prior and the morning of the sale, or Prior Inspection of the sheep is most welcome by appointment with the vendors (see page 1).
CONDITIONS OF SALE - Sold under the conditions of sale as recommended by The Livestock Auctioneers’ Association.
HOTELS - There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue.
METHOD OF SALE - All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.
COMMISSIONS - The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.
SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK - Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

Foreword
I have decided to offer the entire Tweed flock of Texels for sale, with the adult portion to be sold in January and the 2012 ewe lambs to be sold next year as gimmers.
Tweed Texels have always been bred to supply good commercial tups for sale at Kelso, when the first tups were sold there in 1989. I have sold annually every year since, except in the foot and mouth year. Sales at Kelso have reached up to £7,800, £5,000, £4,000, £2,500 several times and in 2001 the Tweed prefix had the top average for 45 rams sold. In 2010 I averaged over £1,000 for 32 tups and have a sound following of repeat buyers at the Kelso Ram Sales.
In 2002 I started recording the Tweed flock with the sire reference scheme and still continue to do so. In 2012 the flock is in the top 10% (20th of the 200 flocks in the Signet recording scheme).
Out of 200 lambs each year the Tweed flock is third overall (behind Drinkstone and Llanferess).
I have always aimed to improve my muscle depth EBV’s and the flock is in the top 9% for scan weights. The contentious issue of fat depth EBV will pull the flocks overall index down as I have aimed for positive fats over the last five years and now have an overall flock fat EBV of 0.16.
Tweed Flock
The flock is MV Accredited (last test Oct 2012) and is in good health. The ewes are all on Heptavac P and will have been fluked. The gimmers are routinely vaccinated with Toxovax and Enzovax which was done again in 2012.
I would expect the ewes and gimmers on offer to go on and do well for prospective buyers and would hope they get as much enjoyment as I have had.

Foreword
Following further complications with my artificial hip and the pin snapping, the continued running of the flock and therefore the farm is proving too problematical. Therefore my wife and I are dispersing the Grey Peel flock completely. Initially the adult female portion of the flock is being sold in lamb to quality tups followed by the sale of the 2012 lamb crop as shearlings at the end of 2013.
The Grey Peel flock was founded in 2001 following the loss, due to foot and mouth in Cumbria, of the Marton House flock which was just at the start of a major development programme to produce high conformation, high quality and performance animals. Performance recording was originally started with the Marton House flock in 1998 with in-flock recording and followed in 1999 with across flock recording as part of Elite Texel Sires (ETS).
The Grey Peel Flock is among the highest recorded flocks within the Texel breed. Most of the females offered are in the top 5% or 10% of the Texel Flock with quite a number over 300 of an Index and a number being in the top 1% of the Texel Flock. This is topped by Grey Peel HMF1000006 at 425 being the 8th. highest adult female in the national Texel flock with an accuracy of 79% which is high for a ewe.
The general mating selection for the ewes has been made on the basis of the Fat level EBV to lower the positive or negative fat level of the offspring closer to zero.
A high conformation, quality, performance programme has been the basis for the creation of Grey Peel Texels. To achieve this 4 quality stock ewes were purchased from the noted Ettrick, Grougfoot and East Middle Flocks and embryos were also taken out of two ewes from the Stonefieldhill Flock to ensure that GREY PEEL TEXELS is MV & EAE accredited. Initially the better ewes and gimmer shearlings were used in flushing programmes producing a number of ET lambs.
The flock is Maedi-Visna & EAE accredited and on the Heptavac P Plus system with all adults in addition receiving an Ovivac P booster in early July each year. It is recommended that all should be given a Heptavac P Plus booster before lambing.
All animals are given a combined Selenium and Cobalt bolus twice a year. The ewes are all due their pre lambing Selenium and Cobalt bolus and it is highly recommended that this is done. Scabivax Forte has also been employed on the farm previously and the ewes have NOT been inoculated with it this time so that the virus would not be introduced on to a purchasers holding. Purchasers are therefore asked to consider if this would be needed for their operation.

In establishing the flock 1st Prize at the Royal Highland Show 2010 was won by Knock Papoose which was purchased at Lanark in 2009 and has proven to be an extremely significant ram. So much so that he is generally known just as Papoose. His female offspring have sold to 26,000gns. Grey Peel has also won 6th prizes for ram lambs at the Royal 2005 and Royal Highland Show 2007 and 2008. Prizes up to 1st. have been won at various other shows including The Border Union (1st.), The Northumberland Show (Reserve Male Champion) and The Great Yorkshire (4th.). A full brother to the significant ewe HMF1000006 above is Grey Peel Rambo which sold for £15,000 at Kelso Ram Sale 2011 and this is the 2nd. highest price achieved for ANY Texel shearling tup and a record for Texels sold at Kelso.
Grey Peel Texels have won three (2007, 2009 & 2010, no entries made in 2008 & 2011 or 2012 as this was not held by Swan’s) prime lamb championships at St. Boswells market where home bred high index tup lambs are used on Cross Texel ewes not being used for ET work. Only 40-50 prime lambs maximum in a normal year are produced from the Cross Texel recipient ewes to select from for these championships. For example due to ET work only 8 prime cross lambs out of 16 total prime lambs (the other 8 were later born) were available in 2010 to select the 5 lambs that won the Summer Show and Sale at John Swan’s.
This year the ewes and gimmer shearlings have been sired by Grey Peel Rambo, Knock Stonker, purchased at Lanark for 5,200gns and Cwmcerrig Top Man purchased at Lanark and is a full embryo brother to the Royal Welsh Show first prize Ram Lamb 2012 Cwmcerrig Topper WJJ1200201 which sold for 4200gns at Lanark.
In addition to the Texels and included within the sale are the in lamb MV & EAE cross texel gimmers and ewes and four 2009 born Pedigree Herdwicks bred by C K M Stewart of Selkirk. As mentioned above the cross texel ewes have produced John Swan’s Champion wining prime lambs and selected from an extremely small number of cross lambs. This year they are all in lamb to Knock Stonker a tremendous carcass tup.
The texel cross gimmer shearlings are daughters of £3,000 Grey Peel Rocket who has a tremendous carcass and they should produce very special 15/16th. Texel cross prime lambs. Likewise the Texel/Herdwick cross gimmer shearling should produce a very special 3/4 Texel cross prime lamb(s).
All of the Texel cross ewes are 2009 down to a single 2004 ewe but each of them are capable of producing quality prime lambs. As an example the 2004 born ewe’s prime lamb in 2012 sold for £99 which is no mean feat in the 2012 market.
The Herdwick ewes are superb mothers and due to their breeding extremely easy lambers basically not requiring any attention.
All of the cross ewes are suitable for recipient work with the added bonus they are carrying quality prime lambs which should provide a good return upon the sale of the lambs. An option being the retention of the female offspring for further ET work.

Grey Peel Rambo is a significant ram that was noticed in 2011 at the Great Yorkshire Show, Border Union Show (1st) and certainly at the Kelso Ram Sales ( Performance Champion) with tremendous length, character, size etc. Prior to the Kelso Ram sales a good number of potential buyers were examining him at Innovis and at Grey Peel. His dam is the Cambwell ewe LTC07536 that sold for 4,400gns (flock reduction sale January 2011) and sired by the notable Cambwell Laird. His grand sire is East Middle Le Coq d’Or who was the quintessential quality recorded ram with a good head, great back and gigot, and stood well. Le Coq d’Or was 1st winner at the Royal in the Performance Recorded Class 2006. Drinkstone Oh So Smart sold at Kelso 2009 for £1800 and follows in Le Coq d'Or's footsteps. Knock Stonker is by the renowned Cambwell Rob Roy out of what is considered to be the best ewe in the extremely regarded Knock flock. Stonker was purchased at Lanark 2011 for 5,200gns having a tremendous carcase, skin, length and with good performance figures to continue the upward but steady improvement in Grey Peel’s recording performance. His development has continued while growing into an impressive shearling where he has performed well at shows winning Reserve Male Champion at the well contested Northumberland Show and a 2nd prize winner at the Border Union Show beating the 2012 RHAS shearling. THE FOLLOWING
All visitors and traders on site will be responsible for ensuring that they and their employees or sub-contractors engaged by them comply with all legal requirements, including the Health and Safety At Work etc., Act 1974, The Management of Health and Safety At Work Regulations, The Provision And Use of Work Equipment Regulations, etc.
All visitors and traders will be responsible for ensuring that their operations in no way affect the integrity of the company or its fire, safety or security arrangements and in no way compromise the health and safety and welfare of other visitors to and or employees of Harrison & Hetherington.
Although it is the visitors and traders responsibility to ensure that plant, equipment and systems in work are safe, Harrison & Hetherington Limited reserve the right to ask any visitor or trader to leave the market for any breaches in the Health and Safety Rules and/or Regulations.
Vendors must inform Harrison & Hetherington Limited of any livestock due to attend the market whose temperament, behaviour or condition may call for additional precautions for its safe handling.
When loading or unloading livestock handlers must ensure that the dock and vehicle gates are securely fixed so as to prevent the escape of animals.
Traders are responsible for providing and maintaining suitable livestock handling equipment. They should ensure that livestock handlers are fit, experienced in livestock handling and familiar with the livestock in their charge.
Children must not be permitted in any area where they may be at risk from livestock or machinery.
In the case of bulls, during the period when the show/sale is open to visitors, bulls in stalls or pens should not be left unattended. If the handler is temporarily absent, arrangements should be made with another vendor, steward or member of Harrison & Hetherington staff to oversee the bull until the handler returns.
Handling of Livestock at shows and sales: Harrison & Hetherington Limited recommend that an adult person should accompany any junior person during the showing/sale of livestock in the ring and reserves the right to intervene at any point if, in the company’s opinion, the person showing the livestock is at risk in undertaking that activity.
Passageways must be kept clear at all times during the auction sale. PLEASE DO NOT STAND IN THE SALE RING ENTRANCE AND EXIT PASSAGES.
The auction ring man escapes and refuges must be kept clear at all times.
All portable electrical equipment supplied and/or used by visitors and traders must be safe and fit for the purpose and should have a valid portable appliance test certificate.
AUCTIONEER’S TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE
(Incorporating the Auctioneer’s Terms and Conditions as recommended by the NBA)
1. The biddings to be regulated by the Auctioneers and the highest bidder, subject to the Vendor’s reserve (if any), to be the purchaser. No bid shall be retracted and if any dispute should arise between two or more bidders, the Lot in dispute to be put up again and resold, or the Auctioneers may determine the dispute at their own discretion and their decision shall be final. The Auctioneers reserve the right to refuse the bid of any person without being called upon to give reason for such action.
2. The Purchaser to give his full name and dwelling place and pay for all Lots purchased immediately at the close of sale. No Lot or Lots shall be removed from the sale premises until paid for and a pass-out slip obtained from the Auctioneer’s clerk but each and every Lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the respective purchaser or purchasers thereof and shall be removed from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense. The right of property shall not pass until the full purchase price is paid.
3. Purchasers paying by cheque must be prepared, if required, to produce a banker’s reference. As a result of the Money Laundering Regulations (2003) the auctioneers are unable to accept cash payments in excess of nine thousand pounds sterling for any any single or linked purchase transaction.
4. All statements in the catalogue, or made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale, also the correct identification of the animals, are the entire responsibility of the Vendors. The Auctioneers take no personal responsibility for the correctness of such statements or identities.
5. All statements in the catalogue, or any made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale relating to any veterinary or other tests are to be taken as statements of fact only. No such statements shall guarantee the purchaser of any animal against loss arising from the subsequent reaction of such animal to any test administered after the sale and the Vendors shall not be liable in any way should this occur.
6. All stock is sold subject to the Conditions of Sale recommended for use at markets by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Markets Committee for England and Wales except in so far as these conflict with any Special Conditions applicable to the sale of pedigree stock, when the latter Conditions shall prevail.
7. Neither the Vendors nor the Auctioneers will be responsible for any accident or injury to persons or property, through fire or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage by animals prior to, during or after the sale.
8. No undertaking by the Auctioneers or their servants to take charge of any Lot or Lots after the sale or to forward them to their destination shall be held to impose upon the Auctioneers any legal obligation or vitiate any of these Conditions.
9. Inasmuch as the Auctioneers act as agents for a disclosed principal they shall not be considered personally responsible for any default on the part of either purchasers or Vendors and the remedy shall be against them only and not against the Auctioneers.
10. If these conditions are unfulfilled, the Vendors or Auctioneers shall have the power to resell the Lots, retaining any surplus and charging any deficiency and expense to the defaulter.
11. You have a right to know how we will use the information you have provided to us. We may share the information with other members of our group and may make this information available to relevant media groups and other interested parties on request. We and other members of the group may contact you by telephone, e-mail, post or fax to inform you of products or services available.
