Desert Race – the Ultimate Adventure A unique look upon the legendary Dakar RallyThe Dakar Rally is the world’s longest and toughest motor race. This is a tale of survival of the fittest, and completing the race is in itself an enormous achievement. It is an event that brings together real men and the toughest tom-boys. The Dakar Rally is a rarity in a man’s world of the purest kind. It is a kind of community that nowadays practically exists only in the armed forces and some biker gangs, where it is often described as violent and callous. But the solidarity is positive and its structure basically masculine and so it comes naturally to men.

It is the stories of these people, their dreams and their hopes that the film provides. We live with them in their ups and downs, we share their disappointments and cheer with them in their victories. We follow them day and

night through the sacrifices they make to ensure their chariots the best possible positions.

Cave FeverDeath has his gnarled hand on the shoulders of the cavers exploring the water-filled Mexican caves. If their equipment fails they will have made their very last dive, because it is often as much as half an hour or even an hour to the next air pocket. In return fabulous experiences await the intrepid explorer: nature’s own inconceivably wondrous cathedrals, inhabited by species hitherto unknown. The fantastic caves attract cavers with their own particular dreams of revealing the secrets hidden there. Biologists, geologists and zoologists make the pilgrimage to Yucatan, Mexico, in search of the perfect altar for their ritual of derring-do and quest for beauty.

Crossing the LineWhat does it take to push us into the zone where we transgress ethical and legal boundaries? And as individuals and society as a whole, can we accept assault, torture and murder if we think the situation justifies them? Crossing the Line draws on hard-hitting, up-to-date examples to spotlight the dilemma of human rights versus our own protection.

Esad Landzo, an ex Bosnian soldier, is a striking example of how close to the surface our inner torturer can be. He grew up in the bosom of a happy nuclear family. As a young soldier he emerged from the closet as a bloodthirsty avenger, torturing and murdering fellow human beings in cold blood. Today he is penitent, but from his prison cell he asks if he really had any choice. However, could or would any citizen in his right mind follow in Landzo’s bloody

footsteps and resort to torture or murder for his own protection? And is even the most civilized society prepared to cross the line and ignore ethics and human rights if its safety so requires? Many of us probably think or at least hope that this is not so. But the facts tell a different story.

The Black Man and the FloodNew Orleans one year after Katrina. A one-hour documentary from the bottom-side of USA.

The documentary starts in the days after the Hurricane, where despair is growing, day by day. While the news media are leaving New Orleans, poverty and racism is there to stay. In the midst of this, the main character Malik Rahim, 58 years old and former member of the Black Panthers is bringing food, water and hope to the few elderly and poor that have not left the city. His one-man mission quickly becomes an organisation and donations and volunteers from all over America starts coming in. Malik wants to use the situation and the attention to make sustainable changes in his poor black community, and soon he opens a health clinic and begins to distribute food

to more distant areas. He stayed during the hurricane, became a local hero in the days after and now is running for mayor of New Orleans. The documentary also features Michael Moore and Naomi Klein.

reThe Other Europe

Director & producer: ..............Poul-Erik HeilbuthProduced: ..............................DR TV (Danish Broadcasting Corp.)Duration: ................................58 min.Year of production: ...............2006

MIPDOC Video library

Everywhere in Europe politicians are aware of the popular demand for fewer aliens. Official roads to Europe have been more or less closed for immigrants. The Other Europe presents the millions of illegal immigrants that force their way in anyway. We are allowed into their everyday life – a life without passports, papers, insurance, and all the other things we take for granted.

The Other Europe will take the viewer to Germany, Spain, UK, and Belgium to illustrate the central dilemma of the film: the fact that the Europeans feel they are victims, drowned by a tide of immigrants. But is that the true picture? Is Europe really the victim, or do the demands for ridiculously cheap labour create a breeding ground for the hundreds of thousands who sneak in illegally every year? Is Europe a helpless victim or in fact creating the tide?

Latest film by award winning director Poul-Erik Heilbuth.

False ChildrenThe programme follows an eight-year-old refugee who has run away from home. The boy discloses that the man and woman he has been living with are not his real parents. Cases have shown that many refugee children have been “reunited” with false parents, and we accompany eight-year-old Yousef on a dramatic, highly emotional journey back to the parents in Iraq who originally dispatched their son to Denmark.

The programme takes us extraordinarily close to Yousef and the complicated business of getting him back to his real parents in Iraq. It reveals everything from bureaucracy, the difficulties of planning travel to a war-ravaged country, and the dramatic, deeply moving journey into the chaos of Iraq. We appreciate Yousef’s longing to see his family and his trepidation at returning to them, and we are present at the thought-provoking encounter between two very different approaches to child-rearing: an encounter that does not turn out quite as expected.

In Languages We LiveV o i c e s o f t h e W o r l dOf the World’s approximately 6,500 languages, one dies out every two weeks and the World is destined to lose half its cultural heritage within the next 100 years. Many of the endangered languages are spoken by small groups of indigenous people who have limited access to economic resources and very little influence on their country’s cultural and linguistic policy. Some 60 of the world’s languages are spoken only by very few people.

Why do these languages disappear, and what is the significance of this loss, not only to those who speak them but to the rest of us as well?

Late Lessons from Early WarningsSometimes, faith in progress can be so overwhelming that the world is willing to go to any lengths to ensure a new technological leap forward – regardless of the threat it may present to both mankind and his environment. This series is a historical exploration of how we have been able to respond to warnings about the hazards that some of these inventions have represented during the last century.

In the first four episodes this award-winning series looked at the damages caused by leaded gasoline, air pollution, asbestos and extensive irrigation. And now Late Lessons from Early Warnings introduces another four programmes in the series: The Atmospheric Hole looks at the history of the Ozone layer; The Mysterious Poison investigates the

now infamous pesticide PCB; Cosy Killer traces the history of cigarettes; and antibiotics, the most significant discovery in modern medical history, is described in Fighting the Microbes.

One hundred years ago, the Herero people of Namibia were nearly exterminated by German colonial soldiers in what has become known as the first genocide of the 20th century. Herero men, women, and children were rounded up like cattle and put into Germany’s first ever concentration camps. Four years later, three-quarters of the entire Herero nation had perished at the hands of German colonialists.

The main character is a 23-year-old Herero woman named Georgina. She has a fair complexion and a green tinge to her eyes. Georgina is aware of the fact that her great grandmother was raped by a German soldier and now wants to confront the demons of her own genetic past.

Old & WiseOld & Wise is a series of seven short documentaries investigating what it means to different people to grow old. The films can be shown individually as fillers of between 9 and 11 minutes or as 58 min. / 70 min.

MOMENT is a group of seven professional filmmakers who have committed themselves to an investigation of the methods and language of documentary making. The members use their different cultural and educational backgrounds actively in a distinct personal approach to the subject.

“We have chosen to make seven films about old people because there is very little focus on the subject in the media. We believe there is an ever increasing culture of youth idealisation in society

which leads to a fear of becoming old. It is our goal to tell some of the positive stories of old people”.

The WormInese (43) and Karlis (62) occupy an illegally-built hut in the suburbs of Riga City in Latvia. They are both stuck at the very bottom of the social ladder, doomed to fight for mere existence. They are neither alcoholics nor criminals, they are les miserables of today. They survive on a single pension and other people’s leftovers. One day they decide to start a family business: breeding worms for local anglers. And the life of the worms turns out to be unexpectedly exciting...

The director’s initial idea of making a film about a man engaged in a far-fetched business venture soon developed into an existential tragicomedy. The Worm gives a captivating and very moving insight into Inese and Karlis’ very own world.

The Mind of My Father“When I was little, my father filmed me. Now I’m filming him.” In the sixties, the future looked rosy for Vibe’s parents. They had a house with a garden and two children. Now it’s 2004, and in the intervening period many dramatic and painful changes have occurred; mum passed away and dad is struggling with schizophrenia. In this film we become privy to Vibe’s loving relationship with her father and to a moving retelling of both their lives.

The Mind of My Father is a film about love, hope, and a human being’s ability to overcome adversity, even in the face of the greatest of obstacles.

Copenhagen Remix– A documentary film about street-art

Copenhagen is a small but celebrated European capital. It is famous for Tivoli, the Little Mermaid, the Royal Family, etc. But Copenhagen also has a very different visual side to it. Throughout the city street-artists are adding their stories, emotions, and idiom to the walls and tunnels.

Copenhagen Remix was shot during a genuine fairytale event: a royal wedding between a Crown Prince and his Australian fiancée. While the city is dressing up for the royal event, two local artists are working intensely in the streets with their arts. Meanwhile a desperate graffiti remover from the city council is trying to clean up the “mess” before the giant event. The film follows the two artists in their work and gets close to the human need for self-expression. It is a need that even the graffiti remover has to acknowledge by the end of the film. Through the two artists’ work (and that of other artists in the cityscape) we get a feel for the organism of a big modern city in Europe.

Broken ColumnBroken Column is an installation in Stavanger, Norway by British artist Antony Gormley (b. 1950). It consists of 23 cast-iron figures scattered about the city – in the centre of town, in a classroom, churchyard, parking lot, service station, shop, municipal swimming pool, museum, soccer field, and even a residential home. The creatures are arranged at varying altitudes, from 1.23 metres to 40 metres above sea level, with a gradual curve of 1.95 meters, forming an imaginary column that is spread out or broken – hence the work’s title. Antony Gormley is well-known to the inhabitants of Stavanger, having previously created Another Place, an ephemeral installation comprising some

hundred different figures placed on the beach outside the city’s airport. This time, Gormley chose to place the statues in and amongst the residents – one in the middle of a woman’s living room – forever. A story of the confrontation between artist and audience, this film looks not only at the art itself, but at the reactions to it and the controversy surrounding it.

Did you see:They Made History - 9 x 40 min.The international TV series They Made History visits a group of the world’s most significant people whose choices have affected the course of history over the last forty years. Each programme focuses on one historical event and at the same time provides a personal profile of the leader being interviewed.

The series profiles: Moammar Gadaffi, Shimon Peres, Benazir Bhutto, Corazon Aquino, Desmond Tutu and Frederik de Klerk, Madeleine Albright, Lech Walesa, Viktor Yuschenko, and Daniel Ortega

Karen Blixen - 58 min. This documentary takes the viewers on a journey throughout the fascinating life of the world famous author Karen Blixen, told by people close to her. A journey that not only documents her extraordinary life, her extensive travels and the people she met; through her story it also depicts a time of adventure and eccentric aristocrats, a time of opportunities and obstacles.

The Inuit Experiment - 2 x 1 hour or 4 x 30 min.A group of scientist set out to solve the riddle of obesity. In the most thorough experiment involving living human beings in history, 16 westerners and 8 Inuit spent 6 weeks on the sea ice off Thule in North-western Greenland. Prior to the expedition they had all been subjected to extensive and painful tests. And once on the ice, they had to walk 8 hours a day, each carrying loads of 80 kg. 6 weeks of temperatures of minus 30, endless hours of often monotonous hardships, unstable ice, and obstacles.

Learning for Life - 49 min.Throughout the world, children’s access to education is no matter of course. What we take for granted in the West is the exception in many third world countries. Learning for Life portrays three children from three different parts of the world who all share an equal desire to learn. But they all have to face obstacles and social injustice.

Seda – People of the March - 52 min.In Seda, a remote peat miners’ town of Latvia, time seems to be frozen in the Soviet era. Built in 1952 and inhabited by a multi-ethnic workforce from different parts of the former USSR, it still preserves intact the signs of the inflated style of a Stalin’s “shock work” construction project. But with the fall of the Communist regime things changed. The local vodka shop was transformed into a Russian Orthodox church, and the peat was now exported to the Netherlands.

Sea of Attractions - 26 min. Non-verbalThe narrow strip of seashore is a no-man’s zone belonging to both sea and land. What is interesting about it is that this zone exerts an almost magnetic attraction on people. Due to its strange attractive force, the seashore often turns into a playground for all sorts of people, each of them absorbed in his or her particular form of play.

The Caravan - 28 min.Every year in September a group of nomad women from the Tuareg tribe in Niger form a caravan to venture out on a journey of 600 km across one of the largest sand deserts in the Sahara area. Their journey will take them to the oases of Fachi, but to get there they must cross extremely difficult desert terrain where even the smallest mistake can have disastrous consequences.

Jorn – Havana - 28 min. This is a love story: the brief encounter between a very sensitive, gifted artist and a very special place in a unique moment of its history. It’s the story of the artist Asger Jorn’s visit to Cuba in 1968. Invited to attend an international conference on art in the society in Cuba, Jorn soon got tired of the countless academic speeches and decided to leave a piece of art behind as a gift to the Cuban people.
