Michael dean is a research Analyst with informa telecoms & Media. in his role Michael looks at the impact of the latest developments inonline and ott content, connected devices and hybrid delivery platforms.

Online video accounted for only about 12% ofall Internet traffic in the region in 2010, butInforma Telecoms & Media forecasts that thefigure will jump to about 27% by 2015.Additionally, the number of connected devices– including connected TVs and hybrid set-topboxes – is set to dramatically increase over thenext five years. In 2011 the installed base of allin-home connected devices was about 6.1million, but Informa forecasts that by end-2016the number will have risen to just shy of 100million. The growing penetration of suchdevices will continue to fuel additional OTT-service launches.

Poland and Russia in particular are seing aformidable pace for their CEE peers when itcomes to online-video services. Homegrownonline VOD services, such as Omlet.ru andTVigle in Russia and Onet.pl and Ipla in Poland, are all experiencing ever-increasing subscribernumbers and usage and demonstrate thetenacity of local player in this OTT landscape. All these players have been quick to launch onconnected-TV devices, and it is notable that inthis respect these services are on par withtheir Western peers. The speed with whichthese services are launching on connected-TVdevices is impressive to say the least.

However, the operators are increasinglydemonstrating a canny sense of adaptabilitywhen faced with the encroachment of OTT

services. Severalplayers, including theleading DTH service inPoland, Canal+Cyfrowy, andSlovenian incumbentTelekom Slovenije, are investing in thedevelopment of fullmultiscreen services, taking contentofferings out of theliving room and onto

portable connected platforms for subscribersto access anytime, anywhere. These launchesare both a preemptive response to the threatof OTT players that have not yet seriouslyemerged and driven by the understanding ofthe additional value a truly multiscreen serviceoffers subscribers.

Others are teamingup directly with OTTofferings, such ascable operator Tarr inHungary, which lastyear became the firstoperator in thecountry to offer amultiscreen servicebut also integratedthe online VODservice HBO Go.

In Western Europe, examples of traditionaltelecoms operators having launched their pay-TV services on connected-TV devices are rare. But in Russia, Beeline launched its service onthe Xbox 360 in April 2011. Only a few monthslater, mobile broadband operator Yotalaunched its VOD service, Yota Play, onSamsung’s connected TVs. But Yota is not theonly big player to have a VOD service onSamsung’s TVs. It is joined by the VOD servicesof fellow operator MTS’ Omlet.ru and startupTVigle. So, unlike in the major Western Europemarkets, connected TVs are already turninginto a balefield between operators and onlineservices in Eastern Europe.

The outcome of the impending tussle forsupremacy is still far from over, but whereWestern peers are being disrupted, many ofthe big CEE pay-TV providers are launchingservices to preemptively stamp out potentialOTT threats and further spread marketdominance. Informa believes OTT will prove tobe much less of a disruptive force in Centraland Eastern Europe than in Western markets.Conversely, OTT will be an important tool forfurther entrenching the market dominance ofestablished larger players – including pay-TVproviders and Internet services, such asYandex – in the media landscapes of theirrespective countries and perhaps beyond.

What once might have been considered a region stuck a pace or twobehind neighbouring Western Europe is quickly catching up and,in some areas, leapfrogging Western markets and jumping head-firstinto these new market opportunities and dynamics.

the past year in particular has seen an explosion of activity in thecee online-video sector, with a flurry of new services coming to market.
