(Written by Crunchy )
0) find a clear table / desk to work on, make sure the floor is not to messy. It'll be a LOT easier to find back those tiny little screws / plastic buttons that tend to fall out exactly the wrong way
1) stick a screwdriver/knife/needle between the USB plug and the bottom plastic part (the one that holds the battery) . Any gap large enough to fit a sharp edge in will do.
2) lever the bottom plastic of the rest of the player. It's not welded or glued tight, so it'll come of easily. Be forceful, but gentle, if necessary. Don't worry if you hear plastic "snapping" it's just the clips coming
loose, you are not breaking anything.
3) in the four corners of the PCB (the printboard with all the chips) you'll find four screws, find a screwdriver that fits, and unscrew them PUT THE SCREWS IN A CONTAINER! Anything will do,
from an egg holder to tupperware to an ashtray, JUST DON'T LOOSE THE SCREWS!!!! You can now lift off the main PCB. Be carefull, as the LCD connector cable (brown flat cable) is quite fragile. Don't
break it!
4) You can now safely remove the chrome/silver/shiny ring from the player. Note how it fits UNDER the main PCB, and how the LCD connector cable goes through it. This bit is a bit tricky to reassemble
later, so if you remember how everything was in the first place, It'll be easier to put it back together.
5) you can now see the back of the LCD board. there should be two screws in it. Again, take your screwdriver and unscrew them. Put these screws in a (different) container! Again, Don't lose the screws!
you NEED them. Put them in a different container to make sure you don't mix them up with the four "main PCB screws", as that will cause trouble when you put the player back together. After all that, you
can take the LCD board from the front of the case. Remember, the brown LCD connector cable is FRAGILE, don't break it!

Congratulations, you have now disassembled your S1MP3 player! To reassemble it, just follow this guide in reverse order.
well, I hope this little guide is of help to you, anyway, report back the results, even if it fails, even if it succeeds, and why it worked/failed. It'll be education for all of us.
First, uninstall the "mp3 player tools" you have installed previously. Install the 1.45 version available at the Aplicaciones y Utilidades.
Unplug the player and remove all the drivers related to USB at the device manager
Now, click "SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES" button. Finally after the new USB drivers are installed, plug in your player.
If you have problems with drivers, they may be obtained at the place you've installed the MP3 player utilities(program files/MP3 Player Utilities/) At folders "Windows98Drv", and "Dissipate/drivers".
If you follow all this steps and windows still can't recognize it, you may try to push ALL the buttons while connecting it to the USB hub. Try every button, and keep the button hold. You may also try to
plug it on another computer.
If nothing works, don't get desperate, you can still try to short-circuit the memory chip to make it run the "recovery mode".
4. Instale un programa de actualización compatible
Skip this step if the updater program runs on your machine.
Firstly, make sure you have done the previous steps, and disable any anti virus/anti spywares.
Try to plug your device with and without the batteries, and see if holding the buttons solves the update program start errors.
If you are still getting errors like "UNKNOW FLASH TYPE ", "FLASH NOT RESPONDING", "DEVICE NOT DETECTED", "DEVICE IS BUSY", You should uninstall you current updater
program and try other ones. (see the Herramienta de actualización del reproductor)

If you still can't make it work, you can try to short-circuit the memory chip to make it run the "recovery mode".
You must disassemble your mp3 player. If you haven't done this yet, check the disassemble the s1mp3.
Recognize the memory chip, near the ATJ2085 chip. It's usually a samsung chip, and it's the biggest silicon on the board. To help identifying the device components, check the Vista interna del s1Mp3. We
have seen players with 2 memory chips, too. If you have one of those, you have to short the memory chip near the ATJ2085.
Now, without the batteries , with a flat screwdriver, touch any of the 8 IO legs of the memory chip. Then, with the screwdriver on, connect the player to the USB.
If you are successful, windows will recognize an ADFU server device. Now, let windows install the drivers. Now you may flash any firmware to the player, after finding a compatible update program.
You may need to do this process lots of time before getting a successful short.
6. Encuentre el firmware para su reproductor de mp3
With your board number in hand, check the Firmware list . If you find a firmware compatible with your board, your 're lucky, try it.

But, if you don't find your board there, them you will have to find it yourself, by attempt and error. We unhappily CAN'T help you hunting. (Google can.)
All the firmwares we have collected so far are on the forum, get them and start trying. Post your complete experiences on the forum, so, with some time, we will catalogue all the FW files.
If you have a friend with a identical player it's easy, just ask him to extract the bin file from his player using La aplicación de Wire.
7. ¡Ayuda! ¡Todavía no consigo reparar mi reproductor!
If you have SURE you have made all the steps above, post on the forum describing what is going wrong, maybe we can help you.
The most important is to keep faith, LOTS of people already recovered their players!

1. Guía s1fwx
(taken from http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uwa8/s1mp3/?Tools.s1fwx)
Description and basic usage:
s1fwx (s1 firmware extractor) is a free commandline tool (public domain) which lets you extract the original firmware from your s1 mp3 player device.
Additional features support operations on the firmware files like decrypt, extract and archive. This way you could investigate all the files included in any fw file, change their content and put them back
together.
There are two known archive formats:
● AFI: this archives include files needed to flash the device, a minimal set may consist of an BRECFxxx.BIN (the bootloader) and a FWIMAGE.FW file (see below)
● FW/FWI: firmware image files include all firmware files needed during runtime
Commandline usage:
usage: s1fwx {i|x|s|a|l|f|r} {filename{:[afi|fw|enc]}} examples: display file info s1fwx i fname.ext extract firmware file s1fwx x fname.ext generate script from file s1fwx s fname.ext > new.script create
firmware file by script s1fwx a new.fw:fw < def_fw.script create afi file by script s1fwx a new.bin:afi < def_afi.script list entire content of any file s1fwx l *.bin extract firmware from player s1fwx f dump.bin

How to extract and repair firmware:
Extracting your players firmware is a very good idea just to create a backup of the original firmware files. It's no promise that you could always backup your player after some bad firmware update, but at
least you have some more possibilities.
First download newest version(La aplicación de Wire) of s1fwx and extract the archive. Then connect your mp3 player device to your computers USB port and wait until it gets detected. Now double click
the extracted file "extract.bat" or run
s1fwx f dump.binfrom the windows commandline console. Skip the disclaimer by pressing space and select the drive your
player gets mounted to. (eg. if detected drives displays " <x> " then choose drive "x:" by pressing x) Now s1fwx should start extracting your firmware, this may take around 10 seconds. If all went well and no error gets displayed it will display the content of the extracted firmware file as it was read from your
player.
Before you can update your player with this firmware file using the original "Mp3 Player Update Tool" you will first have to repair it. Start "repair.bat" or type
s1fwx r dump.bin
A backup will be saved at "dump.bi$" automatically and the repaired file is now available as "dump.bin". Notice that its not possible to do a firmware recovery with this file (only regular firmware updates)
since there are missing files needed by the "Mp3 Player Update Tool" recovery mode.
Since this files couldn't be found on your player you will need to get them from some official firmware file which is known to work with your players hardware. Either you first could recover to this firmware
before updating to "dump.bin", or you could insert the needed files from the original AFI file into "dump.bin" using s1fwx. The original firmware has to support your flash chip(s). It doesn't matters if its just
using different backlight or key-mapping.
Extract Firmware Files
Here some example how to extract the whole content of the AFI file "firmware.bin".
Place firmware and s1fwx in one folder, open commandline console (run "cmd") and go to the folder containing the files. To extract the AFI and the firmware files, type:
s1fwx x firmware.bin md fw cd fw ../s1fwx x ../fwimage.fw
http://www.s1mp3.org/es/docs_advanceduguide.php?PHPSESSID=e8702e5cd3fc686b6ddc968c2a04d0f8 (3 of 5)30/08/2006 02:37:39 p.m.
Now you should have extracted all the files usually included in some general firmware file.
Archive Firmware Files
To modify files in a firmware you will have to extract, modify and then archive the files back together to one AFI file.
First generate the script from the firmware file "firmware.bin", using:
s1fwx s firmware.bin >firmware.bin.script
Then extract the files and modify their content if you want. if you want to add or remove files or change file specific parameters edit the generated script using an usual text editor (i think the syntax is self
explaining).
To archive the files back together type:
s1fwx a new_firmware.bin:afi firmware.bin .scriptThis could also be used to archive firmware files like "fwimage.fw". In this case use:
s1fwx a fwimage.fw:fw fwimage.fw.script
Recover To Extracted Firmware Files
Flashing your player with an extracted firmware file is a very simple procedure, just take care you repaired the extracted file (see above) and use the latest "MP3 Update Tool" available at the download
section.
This works good until the day we flash our player with some partial corrupted firmware (a total corrupted firmware will damage the player permanently) and the update tool tells something about
recovery mode and just opens an open-dialog. (maybe you will have to open your player and short some pins to get to this point, read the forum for further instructions).
If you select an extracted firmware file now, it just displays "Invalid upgrade firmware file". This isn't a bug of s1fwx! The problem is that recovering needs some extra files included inside our AFI-file that isn't needed for simple flashing. This files couldn't be found on the players flash, the only source is to
look for them inside some original firmware files.
There are two methods to solve this problem and each of them expects you could find some original firmware file which is compatible to your players hardware and extracted firmware.
[Method 1]
http://www.s1mp3.org/es/docs_advanceduguide.php?PHPSESSID=e8702e5cd3fc686b6ddc968c2a04d0f8 (4 of 5)30/08/2006 02:37:39 p.m.
● - recover using some official firmware● - format the player (with the "MP3 Player Disk Tool")
● - finally update to the extracted firmware file
[Method 2]
● - extract the extracted and the official firmware file using s1fwx (only the AFI part)● - generate a script for both files ("s1fwx s dump.bin >dump.script")
● - merge the scripts to some new script file using a text editor● - build a firmware using the new script ("s1fwx a new.bin:afi new.script")
Both methods should have the same effect, give it a try!
2. Guía s1res
(taken from http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uwa8/s1mp3/?Tools.s1fwx)
s1res (s1 resource editor) is a free win32 gui licensed as public domain.(La aplicación de Wire)
To change graphics or text on the S1 MP3 Player, just extract and repair your firmware using s1fwx. Then run s1res and edit the extracted firmware file directly. Save the file and upload it using the original
MP3 Update Tool.

[00:55.68]Lyrics are fun [00:58.49]...dadada...

Most MP3 players available today are firmware upgradable, meaning as it becomes available, new software that runs your player can be loaded onto it to improve its feature set or performance.
In most cases, a firmware update will fix bugs or any playback or navigation issues, though it can sometimes also mean improved battery management, compatibility with new audio formats, and the addition of useful features such as album art support. In a few cases, a firmware update can completely change a player's looks and abilities.
Upgrading firmware is analogous to updating your computer's operating system with patches and fixes, and it often happens semi-automatically. Though not necessary for the majority of players, a firmware upgrade for your MP3 player will nonetheless make your unit the best it can be.
Most manufacturers will offer a periodical firmware upgrade, though you'll often have to find these updates yourself on the manufacturer's Web site. Since each manufacturer has a different method for upgrading a player's firmware, we've offered a few easy upgrade steps for the most popular brands: the Apple iPod and the Creative Zen, as well as iRiver and Cowon players.
Required attention span: About 10 minutes
Before you start, you'll need to gather these elements:
● Windows or Mac computer ● Your MP3 player and transfer cable (typically, USB
2.0) ● An Internet connection to download the firmware or
updater application; in some cases, you can get a firmware updater on a CD
Cowon iAudio Apple iPod Updating the firmware on your iPod is for the most part an automatic process. Updates for the iPod usually unlock a cool new feature, such as compatibility with accessories such as the Camera Connector. Step 1: Automatically update Part of the reason the iPod is so popular is because of its simplicity and its seamless relationship with iTunes. In most cases, iTunes will automatically notify you if you'd like to update your iPod with the latest iPod software. In this case, you simply select Yes. Step 2: Manually update If you'd like to update your software manually, you can do so by downloading iPod Updater software if it's not on your system already. At the time of this writing, the latest version is 2005-11-17, and it includes the latest firmware for every iPod ever made. You'll find it by default in Applications > Utilities > iPod Software Updater. Once you plug in your iPod, you'll get a choice of updating to the latest firmware or restoring (or erasing) your iPod to factory settings.

Step 3: Don't unplug the device Just remember to never unplug your iPod or any other device while the firmware is updating. In the playback info area of iTunes, you'll see the update's progress.

Creative Zen and MuVo The company has a long list of players, including the Zen and MuVo series, but updating firmware is no hassle at all. And you should update, as Creative adds features and improvements to its players often. Step 1: Visit Creative's support page. Select Downloads, then Region, Country, and Language (here's a quicker way for Australian users). Then select MP3 Players and your make of Creative player. We chose Zen, then Zen Micro Photo for this example.

Step 2: Designate your language, operating system, and type of file. Select Firmware. You'll get a page with at least one version of the firmware with the version number, the date, and a brief description of what the new firmware does. Click Details if you want a more detailed look at the enhancements (recommended).

In the case of Zen Micro Photo firmware 1.20.01 dated November 5, 2005, it improves playback performance of protected WMA tracks, which is a considerable upgrade. It also improves support for Japanese and Brazillian-Portugese languages -- not so big a deal. Step 3: Download the update, and save it to your desktop. Alternatively, you can save it in whatever folder you normally use for temporary apps. Simply connect the Zen Micro Photo to your PC via USB, then open the update application (click Run, then Update). Whatever you do, don't unplug the Zen Micro Photo while it's updating. The process is automated, and it took us less than a minute for our update. Step 4: Make sure the firmware is installed. When the update is finished, double-check your firmware version on the device. In the main menu, go to System > Information.

iRiver It used to be somewhat of a pain to update iRiver firmware, but it's become much easier. Occasionally, you'll run into firmware for an international version of the device that can open up new features (such as video on the H300 series), but iRiver does not recommend this. Step 1: Visit iRiver's support page. Australian users can go here. Step 2: Select player type. If you have a flash player such as the iRiver T10, click the bar for Ultra Portable Players. On the resulting page, select your player.
file:///H|/mp3player/- Music Software.htm (3 of 14)30/08/2006 02:49:43 p.m.
Step 3: Find the firmware. Scroll down and you'll see the firmware section, which has a link for the latest firmware. Click the firmware file for graphical instructions on how to update your firmware; in our case, it's version 1.53 for the T10 series. If you have an older non-MTP player (not the T10, T30, H10, and U10), the process is slightly different. Also if you have an H10, there are special instructions that include a bizarre step where you need to reset the device. For info on how to update an older iFP player such as the 700 or 800 series, click here. This process is a little more complicated and requires a formatting of your player.

Step 4: Download the iRiver Firmware Updater. Make sure you download it somewhere accessible, such as the desktop. Unzip the file, then open it. Step 5: Follow the wizard. The wizard will guide you through the process. You'll be prompted to connect your player, which will be autodetected. Conveniently, the updater application will display your player's current firmware version and the new one, and it will give you the opportunity to format your player (erase all data) or simply update the firmware. Step 6: Unplug the T10 and power on. The updating process took 10 seconds on our iRiver T10, and the new firmware allows the user to delete a song from a playlist, create a playlist on the fly without a computer, and improves VBR playback, along with fixing other some bugs. See the complete list here.

Cowon iAudio Cowon may not be a famous brand, but MP3 insiders definitely know that the iAudio series includes some of the most technologically advanced and best-sounding MP3 players available. Updating Cowon's firmware takes a couple of extra steps, but it's pretty easy overall. Cowon is particularly proactive about updating its

firmware, so check for updates regularly. Step 1: Visit Cowon's download page. In the left-hand column, under the heading JetShell/Firmware, select your player from the drop-down box. In our case, we're updating the iAudio X5. Step 2: Find the latest firmware. The page is arranged into types of downloads. Find the listing that has Firmware in the Type column and the most recent date in the Date column. Down below, you'll see what the firmware adds and fixes. In our case, version 2.10 beta 7 doesn't do much (a couple of fixes), so we might decide not to update. Below the description is a step-by-step tutorial offered by Cowon.
Step 3: Download the firmware. Click the Download button next to the most recent firmware. Unzip the firmware update file to your desktop. Make sure your X5's clock is set to the current time. Step 4: Connect the X5 to your computer via USB. Copy the X5_fw.bin file to the Firmware folder of the X5 (go to My Computer and double-click the iAudio X5 drive icon to gain access to the Firmware folder). Step 5: Wait for the update to take effect. Disconnect the USB and power cables from the X5, then connect the power cable. The firmware upgrade will automatically happen on the player; it takes about 30 seconds.
