PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Main Clubhouse Grand Opening – Ribbon Cutting ceremony by past LRC Presidents

At times I believe the Club has much in common with Rob McKenna, the miserable lorry d r ive r in Doug las Adams’ Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. For those unfamiliar with the story, Mr. McKenna is a Rain God (more properly a “Quasi Supernormal I nc r emen ta l P r ec ip i t a t i on Inducer”) that the clouds lovingly pour rain on no matter where he

is in the world. It seems to me that the Club has had the same affliction during recent events. From the MCH Opening party to a demonstration by the most recent runner-up of the US Open tennis tournament, rain threatened to spoil the party. But in true LRC fashion the party went on in spite of the rain.

The MCH Opening Party was a great success based on the positive feedback of many members. One of the more intimidating moments I have experienced was standing on the Veranda during the Ribbon Cutting ceremony with so many past LRC Presidents. As I attempted to convey at the time, the MCH renovation was a team effort involving many members and staff of the LRC stretching back over time. Once again I would like to thank all of those involved with bringing the project to completion.

While rain meant we were disappointed that Kei Nishikori was not able to demonstrate his talents on Court 5, he did graciously

sign memorabilia for several minutes on the Veranda. This is in spite of the press of some very ardent fans seeking an autograph or photograph. I recommend viewing the photographs in Gene Harper’s Tennis Column in this issue of No. 10 to see what was missed.

A party of a different sort went on in Montreal this August. A team comprised of 18 LRC Master swimmers participated in the bi-annual FINA World Masters Championship with great success. The team returned with a number of new records, a fistful of medals and a new World Champion! Congratulations to our participating Master swimmers and thank you for again demonstrating what a vibrant and exciting programme we have at the LRC. For a complete rundown on the event, please turn to Patricia Nichol’s Swimming Column in this issue of No. 10.

We will soon start another improvement project at the LRC – renovation of the Ladies’ Changing Room and associated areas. While I recognize that many members will be unhappy with the resulting noise and inconvenience, the state of the changing room urgently requires attention and it is time to get this long anticipated project launched. I ask that members again show their remarkable patience as we undertake this vital renovation project.

Now – if we can just get the rain to hold off for the Pink Ribbon events.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Despite the bad weather, our grand opening party brought the main clubhouse alive with over 200 members enjoying the building, hospitality and entertainment. As we opened up the dining and function rooms, we hope that this has given everyone an opportunity to see how flexible the space can be for multi-purpose events and occasions.

Dining Room and Cocktail LoungeWhile on the subject, I would like to remind members that there is a dress code in the dining room. Smart casual dress is required. No sports wear, shorts, flip-flops or training shoes are permitted from Tuesday to Saturday. T-shirt, shorts and sports shoes are allowed on Sundays only if they are smart and clean.

Pink Ribbon EventsIn the month of October LRC will host six clubwide events organised to raise funds for the HK Breast Cancer Foundation. There is something for every sector of the club this year, particularly with the introduction of a Pink Aqua Circuit event on Thursday, 16 October which is an activity suitable for all the family. Please mark your diaries with dates for our tennis event, wine dinner, quiz night, fashion show and ladies’ lunch and pink ribbon bridge.

Food SafetyFollowing the latest publicity regarding health risks related to consuming products made with tainted lard oil, I would like to re-assure members that the LRC uses cooking oils from Australia and lard oil from the Netherlands. These products are certified that they are produced in compliance with all legislative requirements and manufactured under hygienic conditions in accordance with statutory requirements of food standards in their respective countries and also to International Food Safety Standards FSSC 22000.

Guest Rule ReminderIt has become necessary for me to write once again with a reminder of rules pertaining to guests using the club’s facilities. The facilities of the club (except Fitness Centre) are available to guests of members on the following conditions:

Rule 6.1 - Except for Houseguests, guests must be accompanied by Club members at all times, abide by the Rules and members may not permit their guests to use their accounts at the Club. If a Member needs to step away for a few minutes, they must inform the staff of their location.

Rule 6.3 - On arrival at the Club, the member must enter the name of the guest in the Guest Book and indicate the facility used. If the facility is not clearly indicated the maximum guest fee will be charged.

Rule 6.4 - If the guest uses sports facilities, a guest fee is payable which will be debited to the member’s account.

Carpark – Waiting DriversAs members have now returned from holiday and the carpark is at full capacity on Saturday mornings due to all classes having re-commenced, I would ask that drivers who are transporting children to and from lessons do not take up a valuable parking space while waiting. Drivers may park at Hornsey Road or May Road.

Ladies’ Changing Room As reported on page 6 and 7, the renovation project consisting of the Ladies’ Changing Room and contiguous exterior areas of the Sports Building has been approved by the General Committee and will commence mid October for a contract period of just over 3 months. This means that all areas of the ground floor and access to the building will be affected, with the Ladies’ Changing Room closed for the duration of the project from 16 October. While the Female Changing Room is under renovation, ladies will be required to use the Girls’ Changing Room in the Family Clubhouse and the cabana facility under the Outdoor Pool. Additional day lockers will be provided in the Girls’ Changing Room with a further 18 units under the pool deck. All female members who currently rent monthly lockers will be contacted to confirm if they wish to continue renting upon completion of the renovation. As mentioned earlier, as the Sports Shop will be downsized, we are also able to install many more day lockers in the Men’s Changing Room which currently has a very long waiting list.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

The Renovation of the Ladies’ Changing Room plus Renovation of the Sports BuildingThe Club is delighted to announce that the complete renovation of the Ladies’ Changing Room, in conjunction with the renovation of the public areas of Sports Building, is to commence during October.

The Ladies’ Changing Room is the Club’s priority project, following the Main Clubhouse completion, with a complete renovation well overdue. While it was very appropriate that there should be a “quiet period” of a few months following the opening of the Main Clubhouse, it is right that Lady Members should have proper facilities at the soonest possible juncture.

The start of the process was a survey during March 2013 of all Lady Members of the LRC. This involved posters in the Ladies’ Changing Room, plus requests in No. 10 magazine together with the weekly club e-mail for responses. Subsequent to the survey, following an extensive tender, the club appointed Wilkinson & Cilley as architects to design the new Ladies’ Changing Room. Subsequently, two lunch meetings were held, to which all the Ladies who replied to the survey were invited.

For the benefit of all Members, it was also decided, at the same time, to renovate several areas of the Sports Building. This includes all the public corridors, the disabled and children’s lavatories and the construction of a new Sports Building Reception area.

Near the Sports Building Reception, the Sports Shop is to be reduced in size, to focus on key items needed immediately by Members, such as tennis balls or swimming goggles. The space freed by this change is being used to expand the Sports Reception area and desk, plus to provide more lockers for the Men’s Changing Room.

For the outside of the building, the Sports Building terrace is also going to be renovated, together with the stairs to the car parks. This includes new lobbies for the car parks. A major improvement

is also the replacement of the present brown tiled wall with a surface and colour similar to the new Main Clubhouse and Sports Buildings.

The Club has carried out an extensive design and tendering process for this project. The winning contractor is DDL, which is to commence the project on 16 October. Management is going to inform all those affected by the project of contingency measures, on an ongoing basis, for the best usage of the Sports Building during the project. Ladies with lockers are going to be contacted individually with regard to arrangements for these.

The project is scheduled to be completed by January 2015. At that point, the Club should have a Ladies’ Changing Room of international standards, plus a much more functional and elegant Sports Building. Some of the drawings for the planned works are shown in this article, together with samples of the materials to be used.

The Development Subcommittee, which has overseen the organisation of this project, is very appreciative of the many members who have assisted these projects with comments. We also very much welcome, on an ongoing basis, comments on improvement projects at our Club.

Mt Difficulty owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand’s rugged South Island. The vine age gives their wines, particularly the Pinot Noirs, extra complexity and concentration. The Bannockburn area is internationally recognised as one of the few places in the world outside Burgundy where the pernickety Pinot Noir variety has found a home. The unique microclimate of the Bannockburn area is partially created by the presence of Mount Difficulty which overlooks the southern Cromwell basin, and is the namesake of Mt Difficulty Wines. Bannockburn enjoys hot summers, a large diurnal temperature variation and long cool autumns; conditions which bring the best out of the Pinot Noir grapes. These conditions, along with soils which are ideal for viticulture, provide an excellent basis not only for Pinot Noir, but also for aromatic whites such as Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay. Michael Herrick, Sales & Marketing Manager from Mt Difficulty winery will present 7 wines – 2 Pinot Gris a Riesling and a Chardonnay, then 3 different Pinot Noir’s including one of their Single Vineyard Pinot Noir’s that are crafted in very limited quantities and only released in outstanding vintages.

Displaying aromas of white fruit and well-integrated, subtle notes from oak-aging, the wine is decidedly unctuous, with balsamic and mineral notes; fresh and pleasant on the palate including a slightly bitter touch on the finish. Beautiful red ruby colour. Very fine and complex aroma, attractive and fresh with mint and fresh fruit. Flavours of ripe red and black fruits, good acidity. Well balanced and persistent. CC2 Hilltops Shiraz, New South Wales, Australia 2010 $200 Medium red with purple tints. On the nose dark cherry and black pepper aromas are matched by subtle spicy oak. The Raid 2In this sequel, Jakarta policeman Rama (Indonesian traditional martial artist/actor Iko Uwais) is asked to go underground to infiltrate one of Jakarta’s two crime families with the goal to ultimately wipe out both groups. Of course, Rama is not too keen on that plan so soon after his first foray into serious crime busting but he has no choice. If he doesn’t act now, the lives of his wife and infant son will be at risk from the family he left in the first installment of this series. Considering I don’t really like this genre of films, I’ve got to say that The Raid 2 wasn’t too bad. The martial arts choreography was top notch. It is not a perfect film by any means and the plot does have some gaping holes in it, but if you’re prepared to suspend all logic and reason (like seeing snow in Jakarta’s streets), and endure a lot of blood and gore for 2-1/2 hours, you’re in for a good time.

NEWS IN BRIEF1 The Pink Ribbon Charity Bridge Dinner will be held on 27 October in the Function Room. 6.15pm arrival and registration time is suggested, so that you have time to eat in a relaxed fashion, and we can get the game underway around 7.30pm.

The $550 charge includes a buffet dinner and a glass of wine, as well as a Lucky Draw where you can take a chance on winning some sought-after items.

It is building to a true gala event. Please come along and lend your support to this worthy cause.

2 The Intermediate bridge lessons held in September ended on a high note. There was very keen interest; in fact they were oversubscribed. We are therefore encouraged to continue in this vein with more lessons. More later.

Supervised play is targeted to begin this month. Several players have expressed a keen interest. See notification below under “Lessons”.

3 The grand opening for the new season of our Friday Duplicate Game was celebrated in the Function Room on 12 September and a true celebration it was. Homemade muffins and a celebratory cake courtesy of Roma. We splashed out with a free game!

We are now moving into the season filled with tournaments and league matches. Our various indoor sports teams have been actively using the facilities to practise and prepare for participating in tournaments.

Tournaments

The annual Stuart Glass Handicap Squash Tournament was held on 6 September and

the winner was our Sports member, Rohan Bhappu, who won for the second year in a row. We would like to announce that the Indonesian National team is going to visit us on 6 October for a friendly match against our squash players. Come and support us!

At the time of writing, there will be a Lim Cup Badminton Tournament, which was a popular event in the past, on 28 September for juniors under 18.

Do you know there is free bowling every Wednesday from 2pm onwards? Come and join us! Our active bowling members will be there, and they are more than happy to share some great tips to make you a good bowler. Having said that, you will need to come more often to practise hard to earn good results.

We’re not called the “ladies” club for nothing! In two recent outings for the Inter-Club Doubles Badminton Challenge, the ladies in our badminton team shone through and showed the rest of the team how to play badminton winning all of their games! After starting shakily and with nerves in our home court against the Kowloon CC, we nearly

came up with an overall win over the hotly favoured HK Football Club also at home (but eventually losing in the final game by just 4 points). Great performance from the entire team, especially since we don’t often play with the same partner during our social badminton games. The games are fast and require lots of concentration, given it is only one game to 31 points (and

our games on Tuesday nights are only up to 21 only). Now that our home games are over, our next game is against HIT and then at an away venue. Given the recent vast improvement of the whole team, we look forward to giving the Club more positive news soon!

On a rainy Friday afternoon last month, Kei Nishikori, the #6 ranked player in the world, joined us for some tennis drills and games with some of our top juniors and kids from the HKTA programme. Nishikori

was a great sport and fun was had by all. He also had a hit with Hong Kong’s top ranked player, Philip King. Kudos to the Sports and Recreation staff, as well as the engineering team for being able to move the entire set up from

court 5 to indoor court #2 in a very short amount of time, as a freak thunderstorm hit the courts an hour before play was to begin. The kids had a great time and our coaches, Andy Brothers, Jeff Schneider, Bobby and Nicolas made sure the programme on the court was fun and competitive.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SWING PATTERNThere are days when we cannot get into our groove and it seems like every single swing of our racket misses the shot. There are days when we cannot even feel our shots and we end up frustrated because we feel like it’s the first time that we held a racket. Sometimes it even gets worse when we are up against opponents whose pace and game style are completely different from ours and we don’t know what to do. In times like these, the fundamental ground stroke swing pattern plays a very important role. While one of the oldest and most generic coaching tips that we will probably hear is “Just hit the ball”, let me give you some other tips to improve your ground strokes.

Top Spin Under Spin Hybrid

The swing pat tern for top spin – is the easiest swing pattern that tennis players can learn. All you have to do is to swing on a circular motion (see illustration). The beauty about the top spin technique, is the almost endless variety of shots that you can do with it. You can hit a heavy top spin that kicks, like Rafa Nadal’s, or hit a hybrid top spin as Roger Federer does for his rally shots, or as Novak Djokovic uses for his passing shots. Those short angled top spin cross courts and offensive top spin lobs can also do some damage in doubles. Even ladies who have solid top spin ground stroke techniques are deadly on the court. The variety of swing patterns for top spin is very interesting to learn. If you can master one, the rest will be a piece of cake.

The swing pattern for under spin / back spin / slice / chop – is also very interesting. It is best used for defence against aggressive opponents, or for offence if you could use it in perfect situations. Normally, you start with an open racket face as you swing at the ball with a high to low motion (see illustration). It is very effective for changing the pace of the rally, especially when your opponent is already getting comfortable with your top spin. There are also varieties of swing patterns for under spin / back spin / slice / chop that can keep your opponents guessing about your game plan. One of the most effective tactics for this is hitting a good deep shot to the corner and slicing a drop shot into the open court.

The swing pattern for a hybrid shot – is slightly the same as with top spin. In fact, the hybrid shot is sort-of mixture of flat and top spin shots. It is when you hit the ball neither too flat, nor with too much top spin. The swing pattern for hybrid can be more aggressive. You can also start with a circular motion but you have to avoid taking the racket head too low on the back swing. Having your racket just behind the ball can make you avoid swinging upward too much. This swing pattern is most effective when you swing at medium to fast pace and when you meet the ball while it is still slightly higher than the net. This will give you more aggressive and more solid kind of shots. You can use it to effectively set-up a shot for an easy put away.

The swing pattern can be a quick solution, especially if you are having problems during matches.

Julian Snelling attended Pan Pacific

Championships, Gold Coast, Australia

Julian Snelling was hard at work in the pool all summer preparing to swim for Hong Kong at the Pan Pacific Championships 10km Open Water event, covering 70,000 yards per week Unfortunately,

the open water event was cancelled due to bad water quality and the possibility of swimming in shark-infested water! It was a shame to miss out on competing at the highest level, but we have no doubt that Julian will have further opportunities. The meet was not a complete dead loss, as he got to sw im a longs ide Michae l Phe lps a n d R ya n L o ch t e i n t h e wa r m up and training pool and watch them race.

Open Water Season

The autumn is a massively busy time for open water swimming in Hong Kong, with a number of events organised by Revolution Asia, Aqua Whizz, Open Water Swimmers of Hong Kong and Open Water Asia. Coaches and team captains can

provide more details. Here’s wishing our teams the best of luck in the annual Clean Half 16km relay taking place on Saturday 11 October.

Championships – LRC has a World

Champion again!

In the world of Masters swimming the World Championships takes place every two years. Two years ago in Italy the team had a lot of success including

Jane Kelsey becoming World Champion. Over 6000 Masters competitors from around the world gathered in Montreal in August. Once again, the LRC sent a team, this time comprising 18 Masters swimmers and they showed why LRC is the best Masters team in Hong Kong: the team came home with a world champion, a bunch of podium medals and Top 10 places and a host of HK Masters records, and Personal Best (PB) times.

Day 1: On the very first day, Jane Kelsey scored the LRC’s first medal of the meet with a storming silver medal in the 800 Free, in a PB and Hong Kong Masters record. A superb swim and a great start to the meet.

Day 2: brought an avalanche of medals with 54 year old Eric Johnson hitting the podium with a magnificent bronze in the 200 Backstroke. Also medalling for Top 10 places in 200 backstroke were Robert Ho (6th), Linh Carpenter (5th) and Lynda Coggins (7th)! These were all really well-deserved Top 10 places.

However the best was yet to come on Day 2 when Jane Kelsey became World Champion once again in the 200 backstroke. Jane is

renowned as a middle distance freestyler so this was a surprise to many!

The 100 freestyle also took place that day and all our men achieved new personal bests. Justin Bridge lopped an enormous 6.4 seconds off his previous time, while Stefan Rust dipped under the magic one minute barrier for the first time, to register a new Hong Kong record.

The ladies were not to be outdone and every single swim was a PB, but the stand out highlight being Jane Kelsey storming to a bronze medal in an amazing 61.54 seconds. Well done Jane, again!

Day 3: Bronze and more Top 10s! The third day saw Eric Johnson and Ex- HK 2 time Olympian Sandy Chan take home Top 10 medals in the 200 Freestyle (in HK Masters records) and Sandy got another Top 10 medal in 50 butterfly.

Once again though, Jane Kelsey got on the podium, with a fantastic bronze in the 200 Freestyle (and was our fastest competitor, male or female)!

Lynda Coggins just missed out with an 11th place in her 200 free, but smashed the HK Masters record. Every swim by an LRC swimmer in the event was a PB. Stefan Rust and Matthieu Barry also got HK Masters records in the 200 Free and Stefan got another one in the 50 Fly. The team also cheered on Damian Jacobs in the exhausting 400IM, with Damian going top 20.

Day 4: brought even more Top 10s, with amazing swims in the 100 Butterfly from Eric Johnson with a 1:04.49 (6th) and Sandy Chan also going top 10 (both HK Masters records). Eric Johnson also went Top 5 in his 200IM. Also well-deserved PBs for Stefan Rust, Matthieu Barry and Tain Kirkwood, demonstrating that to be

a good butterflyer you basically need to choose to do a lot of butterfly in training!! An eye-popping swim came from Ryan Carpenter who carved out a magnificent 1.01.7 in his 100 butterfly, good enough for 13th. Good 200 IM swims this day too came from Alex Cheung, Dominic Tsui, Lynda Coggins, Sandy Chan and Damian Jacobs (Sandy, Lynda and Damian breaking HK Masters records).

Day 5: was Relays Day, which is the most fun you can have in a pool while racing and there were 6 relays competed in - men’s, women’s and mixed relays in medley and freestyle. The atmosphere was amazing and the teams had a blast with a load of PBs and National Record swims. However, the highlight was the Mixed 160 - 199 Freestyle relay who took home the LRC’s first ever Worlds relay team medal – a silver medal! An amazing team effort with our ages spanning 30 to 54, we probably had one of the widest spreads of any team. There were also another amazing 5 Top 10 places in relays!

The team celebrated the success of the meet so far and the fun of the relays day with a fantastic meal out together.

Day 6: More Top 10 Medals: On day 6 Lynda Coggins came 4th in 200 breaststroke and 9th in 100 backstroke, with Robert Ho 6th and Eric Johnson 8th in their respective age groups in 100 Backstroke. Tain Kirkwood was our lone swimmer in the 200 Fly – brave woman and smasher her PB! Alex Cheung also lowered his own record in the 200 breaststroke to round off a good series of swims for the week.

Day 7: AND More Medals: Another great day in the pool brought a 5th place for Rob Ho in and a 6th place for Linh Carpenter, both in the 50 backstroke, while once

again, Jane Kelsey showed her true grit to get a silver medal in the 400 freestyle, the event she won 2 years ago in Italy. Jane went three seconds faster in Montreal despite being two years older.

Open Water: Thus ended the pool events and a few of our swimmers hit the open water of the 1976 Olympics rowing basin. Fantastic results too, with all of Richard Letcher, Damian Jacobs and Lynda Coggins all going Top 20 in their age groups.

There is simply not space in No.10 to highlight every medal winning or Hong Kong record breaking performance. The team did the Club and themselves amazingly proud. Here are some of the other stand out Montreal moments.

1. Matthieu Barry – 800 Free took 27.99 off his PB

2. Justin Bridge – took 6 seconds off his PB for 100 Free and improved his rank by 75 places.

3. Tain Kirkwood – 200 Fly – took 11.62 off PB in the course of 8 weeks. Tain got a number of HK Masters records too.

4. Eric Johnson had an “has anyone seen my glasses moment” inadvertently forgetting to put his goggles over his eyes and still got in the Top 10. Eric was at the wrong end of his age group and got bronze and 4 other individual Top 10 places to go with his relay silver. Sadly Eric is relocating this month to New York. He will be missed at the pool. We wish him well.

5. Ryan Carpenter doing an absolutely outstanding 61 second 100 fly.

6. The 50+ Brigade. Fantastic results for our over 50s swimmers: Tain Kirkwood, Lynda Coggins, Eric Johnson, Dominic Tsui and Robert Ho. Medals, records and PBs. Cannot ask for more.

Everyone had a great competition and came away with swims they could be really proud of. Of the results LRC Swimming Head Coach John Dempsey said “I thought that the performance of our team in Riccione, Italy would never be repeated. I have never been so pleased to have been wrong!!”

As first time competitor Justin Bridge put it: “Everyone supported everyone else and many people spent the whole day rushing from one pool to the next cheering team mates on. The jubilation we felt when someone swam a great race and the

Jane had a great haul from the meet, hitting the podium in all her individual events – go ld , 2 s i lver and 2 b r o n z e d e s p i t e b e i n g a t t h e t o p end of her age group. Jane works incredibly hard in the pool, has a heart of a lion and just never, ever, ever gives up, Jane had this to say: “My swims in Montreal far and away bettered all my expectations. I never would have guessed I would return a World Champion (especially not in the 200m back). For me, however, one of the greatest achievements at Worlds was winning the silver medal as a relay team. Final Words: The World Masters is not all about medals, our team showed great spirit and camaraderie throughout. It is an achievement in itself to qualify and then something else to compete with the best in the world. As Justin Bridge commented “It is amazing how you lift your game on the big stage. I learned a lot more about me as a swimmer.” World Masters first timer, Amber Lake added, “I was in complete awe of my team mates and their amazing performances. I found the whole experience very inspiring. I also got to see JD’s sweet and patient side; I think he only growled at me once the whole week.” Amber, he won’t be so nice to you next time! Just ask Brian….

Malaria, yellow fever, typhus, and the plague have all played pivotal roles in history—halting colonization and travel, felling armies, and even bringing entire empires to their bubo-covered knees—and all of them are transmitted by bugs. Albee opens with the many

ways insects are helpful to humans (as a source of food, in medical research), but those niceties belie the grossness that follows.

Thankfully, Leighton’s mostly cartoon illustrations mean the visuals aren’t scarily gross. Though there are a few missteps—a warning about eating bugs found in the yard should really come before the recipe for chocolate-covered crickets—this engrossing volume is jam-packed with enticingly gruesome world history.
