Member Reflections By: Cindy C.

I’m so happy that I get to spend more time at Turn-ing Point. Turning Point helps me so much, it helps me stay out of the psychiatric ward. It also helps me to socialize with other people. The Clubhouse also helps me to be more responsible. Turning Point is more of a family to me than my real one. Now that I’ve been out of the hospital, I will be able to attend more. We also are able to get out in the community and go places, like to the movies and dinner and to the mall to shop.

My Favorite Things to Do At Turning Point Compiled By: Deshawn F.

Deshawn F.: My favorite thing I like to do while I’m here at Turning Point is working the Bank and I enjoy being here around my fellow Members. Brenda C.: My favorite thing is working the Snack Shop. Laranzer C.: I like the computer and doing tasks. Robert H.: Eating real food. Suzan C.: Friendship. Kim S.: I like to cook lunch and sanitize the kitchen. Henry G.: Doing tasks and the Health & Wellness Groups.

Business Unit News By: Elliott B.

A job done by one person may be few. Everyone is required within the Unit to attend the morning and afternoon meeting and be interested in performing tasks. Please have good communication with each other and stay focused at all times everyone.

Food Unit News By: Brian F.

I like working in the Food Unit and completing it’s tasks. I like to help prepare lunch on occasion, it’s actually pretty fun. On Tuesday’s, we’re now receiv-ing donations from the Panera Bread in the Renais-sance Center. The Members seem to enjoy the bread and pastries. We enjoy serving healthy, good meals with as little processed food as possible. We’re doing very good as a Unit with everyone pitching in to get it done.

Blessed Hope Volunteers

Since late August, Clubhouse Members have been volunteering at the Blessed Hope Church serving lunch to the less fortunate members of the commu-nity. This gives the Members a chance to integrate themselves into the community which is one of the pillars of the Clubhouse Model.

Spiritual Corner By: Laranzer C. I want to say what God did for my life. He changed me from the old person that I was, to the new me. So now, I try to make all my time available for Him. And I just want to thank Him, for saving me. To God be the Glory. Amen.

Random Fact Corner

• Anne Frank rewrote her diary in 1944 to improve content and language after hearing the Dutch gov-ernment-in-exile's advise to keep diaries as a record of what went on under the Nazis.

• An elephant's trunk has more than 40,000 muscles. In comparison a human being only has 639 mus-cles total.

• The spiciness of a chili pepper is not in its seeds but in the white pith inside the pepper. • The common experience of arriving somewhere only to realize you've forgotten what you went there

to do is called the "doorway effect." • During WW2, Hajimi Fuji volunteered for the kamikaze but was refused because he had a wife and two

children. His wife then drowned her two young girls and herself.

Renaissance Festival Outing By: Laranzer C. The Renaissance Festival was a wonderful experience. Even getting there was an experience in itself, because of the weather, it rained all the up to Holly and we had to take two freeway detours. I en-joyed the exhibits , saw the Festival Feast. I also saw the juggling act, an axe throwing contest. A lot of attendees were wearing cos-tumes. Tim R., saw the act One Step Further, a comedy, dangerous juggling act with fire, pins and large knifes. I also liked the archery competition. I’m really looking forward to going back next year, and getting a giant turkey leg.

Journey of Hope By: Cindy C. On September 17th we volunteered at the Journey of Hope Church in Taylor for their Block Party. We cooked and wrapped nearly 500 hot dogs, it was fun. We handed out hot dogs and chips to the people who attended. We were also able to walk around and do different things like face painting and get balloons made in any shape you wanted, so I had a hat made out of pink and purple balloons. Everyone had a great time and look forward to doing it again.

The Flower Shop By: Suzette M.

Since late last year, the Clubhouse has been purchasing flowers for the dining room tables from the Ed Lobb flower shop down the street from the Clubhouse. Our Director, Sue P. got the idea from the South Carolina Clubhouse, where she and Shirlon C. attended Colleague Training. They really brighten up the Clubhouse, and be-cause were a non-profit they give us a good discount on the flow-ers. The Members really enjoy the carnations and the colors.

Visiting Nursing Interns By: Shirlon C.

Once again, Karmen M. has brought back nursing student in-terns to make healthy living presentations for the Members. The students from Schoolcraft College in Livonia told us about stress management and health eating habits. They did a great job on the presentations and the Members enjoy have them here. We enjoyed they’re presentations about yoga, ex-ercise and stress reduction exercises like the Relaxation Re-sponse. Turning Point really enjoys having the students join us at the Clubhouse and share their knowledge with us.

Labor Day 2016 and 2017 By: Suzette M.

To many, Labor Day marks the end of the summer season, even as Memorial Day marks its beginning. Many see Labor Day as their last chance to get out and take a vacation before summer is gone, and many workers get a two-week annual vacation pe-riod with Labor Day Weekend right in the middle of the two weeks off.

Most U.S. schools restart classes, after the long summer break, about a week before Labor Day. Others schools, how-ever, resume classes on the day after Labor Day, thus allowing families to get in their last taste of summer before the school year gets underway.

While Canada also celebrates Labor Day at the same time as in the U.S., though spelling it differently to keep faith with the UK, many other countries have their own equivalent of Labor Day. May Day (on May 1st), for example, is observed by over 80 na-tions to give workers a much-needed day off, and there are also other countries with yet other dates for their version of Labor Day.

The first U.S. Labor Day celebrations took place in New York City in 1882 at the behest of local labor unions, who wanted to put the fruits of their industries on public display. In 1887, Ore-gon instituted a state-level Labor Day holiday, and 29 other states followed suit before Labor Day finally became a federal holiday in 1894.

The original Labor Day celebrations consisted of street pa-rades displaying the contributions of laborers in various indus-tries followed by local festivals or other amusements. Over time, it became a time for giving speeches on labor-related topics, which is still occasionally done today.

My Recovery Story By: Ruth G. I’ve come a long way in my Recovery since I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder at the age of 18. I had a nervous breakdown and was in and out of the hospital for ten years, with severe depression. All I wanted to do was sleep. I had no appetite, I didn’t want to eat or take showers. At the age of 28, I was in a psychi-atric hospital and pregnant. I was very depressed. Eventually, I gave birth to a daughter which I gave up for adoption. After I had given birth, I wasn’t depressed anymore. I call her my “Miracle Baby”. After-wards, I bounced around AFC homes for eight years. When I was 36, I got married then divorced at 42. Then for four and a half years, I lived with a man who abused me. I finally acquired the courage to leave him in 2005 and moved into Coogan Terrace in 2007, after living with my parents for a year and a half. I realized that I can live on my own and be independent, Cook and clean for myself, budget my money and pay my bills. I’ve lived there for nine and half years now. I enjoy going to Turning Point on Fridays for now, but when Heaven forbid my dad passes I will come in 3 days a week.
