Supporting R&D and technological innovationprojects of the private sector in Turkey since 1991,TTGV is a successful example that Turkeyindroduced in Europe; an innovative and dynamicintermediary mentioned in EU LisbonCommunique as an organization required to reachpublic R&D support to private sector. TTGVprovides long-term credit that is repaid by thecompanies and that requires cumpulsorycontribution of the companies to all costs incurredin the project. By this way, the public funds aredirected to R&D projects more effectively throughthe "multiplier effect" of the revolving fund.

Istanbul continues to produce the highest numberof fast growing companies with 35, while 14 ofthe winners come from Ankara. We have only 1winner from Kocaeli.

Fast50 Industry segmentation Compared to 2010 results, there is a big increasein software companies from 47 percent to 62percent. We observe that the number ofTelecommunications/Networking firms, decreasedfrom 35% to 22%, which were substituted bysoftware companies. Share of Internet is 8%.

We see that the number of companies whichspent €1M-16M to research and developmentdecreased from 36% to 25% compared to theprevious years. However, it can be seen thatcompanies preferred to spend around €100K-500K in R&D. Spending of €100K-500K increasedfrom %34 to %48 between the years 2010 and2011. In general it is fair to say, companies startedto devote less to research and development in2011, which can be a result of economicturbulence faced in the previous years.

Many of the CEOs of Turkish Technology Fast50companies seem to be confident about theircompanies’ growth prospects. Even though aneconomic recovery is observed between 2009 and2010 leading the confidence level increase, by2011 the confidence level decreases mostprobably due to the economic fluctuations, political recession observed in the Middle East andeconomic instability in Eurozone.

Although, organic growth is the most likelyscenario for the majority of Turkish CEOs for thenext 12 months, merger with strategic partnerseem to gain importance in future plans comparedto recent years. This year, sound business strategyis still perceived as the key for outstanding growtheven though it is seen less important compared toprevious years. On the other hand, strongleadership and right timing in the marketplacesignificantly gained importance over last year.Quality of top management is also considered tobe in the top three main factors in companies’growth in Asia Pacific and EMEA Fast500 amongcompanies.

Considering growth for Turkish CEOs in Fast50Europe, Middle East and Africa are stated as thebest geographic markets of opportunity forsignificant growth over the next five years. On theother hand, excessive government regulation andincreased competition from emerging powers likeIndia and China are perceived as the biggestthreats to growth.

Finding, hiring and retaining qualified employeesis still the biggest operational challenge in Turkeyfor managing rapid growth with over 50 percent. Moreover, it has gained more importance in thelast three years. Spending time on selecting high-quality employees and training them causecompanies to be cost sensitive. Eventually, thismakes finding, hiring and retaining qualifiedemployees the biggest challenge. Although, developing a strong sales and marketing strategyappears to be the second important challengewith 16 percent, its importance significantlydecreased compared to previous years.

Like previous years, the biggest personal challengestated by CEOs, is still developing leaders anddelegating responsibility. Compared to 2010results, making the right decisions gained itsimportance back, becoming the most importantskill with 50 percent. “Thinking globally” becomesthe second most important skill, reaching itshighest value in the last five years.

Although it lost some importance, compared to2010 results, high-quality employees are stillfound to be the second most important factorcontributing to the companies’ growth. CEOs seetraining and education as the most stimulatingfactor of their company’s growth prospects in thenext year. Moreover, almost all surveyed CEOs inFast50 Turkey 2011 Program (94 percent) expecttheir workforce to grow in the next 12 months.

While only 3 percent of the respondent companiesare not sure how to prepare for the New TurkishCommercial Code, majority of the surveyed CEOs(63 percent) believe that their companies areready for the new requirements.
