Tunnelling & Underground Space Tunnel Ventilation, Fire & Life Safety Atkins provides a wide range of services convering all aspects of road and rail tunnel safety, including ventilation, risk analysis and fire safety. Atkins’ expertise has been gained over many years of involvement in major public and private sector infrastructure projects and goverment-funded research projects. Our Tunnel Ventillation, Fire & Life Safety team has a long history of providing specialist expertise and innovative engineering solutions to ventillation and safety challenges in complex tunnel projects. Our engineers are committed to providing specialist services for all aspects of tunnel ventillation. We also provide expert witness services in support of design applications, appeals and arbitration. Our skills and services include • Design and analysis for ventilation of road and rail tunnels, metro systems and other forms of tunnels • Aerodynamic and thermodynamic analysis for tunnel systems Design for refurbishment of tunnel ventilation and fire safety systems • Escape route planning and rescue concepts • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and fire modelling • Quantitative and implementation of tunnel ventilation and pollution monitoring • Post-inciddent investigation and analysis Ventilation and Life Safety A3 Hindhead Atkins was commissioned by the Highways Agency to develop the A3 Hindhead improvement scheme, inlcudiing a 2km twin-bore road tunnel, to sufficient detail for the tender of the ‘early contractor involvement’ (ECI) design and build contract. In the course of the development of the illustrative design, Atkins made technical and operational proposals for the tunnel. Safety objects were established and analysis carried out of the operational hazards. Quantitative assessment of risk, including time- line analysis for incident development and modelling of vehicle fires using computational fluid dynamics, contributed to the development of the tunnel configuration and fire and emergency strategies. Aero and thermodynamics Metronet, Ventilation Analysis Atkins was commissioned by Metronet to perform the aerodynamic and thermodynamic modelling of the Victoria Line underground system of tunnels, shafts and stations with existing rolling stock. In addition, predictive modelling of temperature and airflows on the line with proposed new rolling stock, timetables and passengers was carried out.
