RES 3rd Grade Odyssey of the Mind Team Took on the World!
From May 22-25, RES’ 3rd Grade Odyssey of the Mind team traveled to Michigan State University to
compete at Odyssey World Finals! The team was made up of William Miller, Max Anstett, Emily
Screwvala, Bodhi Mond, and Allie Humphrey, and was coached by William’s mom, Jen Miller. They competed in Division 1, for students in 3rd-5th
grade.
This was the first time in several years that an RES team has made the trip to the Finals. While many
teams are coached by professionals and qualify for Worlds year after year, this was the first year of
involvement in Odyssey for most of this young RES team, and their parent coach!
The four-day event kicked off with an Opening Cere-
mony at a 10,000-seat arena on MSU’s campus. In the days that followed, competitors visited a Crea-tivity Festival and International Festival on site. Com-
petitors stayed in on campus at MSU, and swam in its Olympic-size swimming pool during their down-
time. On the final day, RES students celebrated the end of their competition year alongside thousands of other participants at a massive dance party.
The team partnered with a Swiss team that attends the International School of Geneva, eating meals with their Swiss counterparts and cheering each other on
during competition. The teams traded pins and ex-changed gifts - chocolates from the Swiss team and
maple candies from Warrups Farm from the Redding team. One of the highlights of the kids’ experience was being surprised by a welcome of silly-string
from their parents as they completed a portion of their competition.
