NOTES
It is a special joy to appear at this "fly-in" ,
"love- in" for "Texas Triumph" , Jack Valenti .
Jack is truly a "Man for All Seasons" and
Mary Margaret 1 s "Love is A Many Splendored Thing . "
When the President hears how popular Jack is,
he may change his ideas about his November running mate .
But I ' m sure Jack wouldn ' t want to change his No . 1 job
for a No . 2 job .
My presence tonight is not in any event political .
I ' m here even though there are no Variety Clubs in New
Hampshire .
It is not true that anyone in the industry has
asked my friend Senator Gene McCarthy to leave this
month to become a documentary Producer overseas .
My presence here is as much as a surprise
as Bob Hope ' s appearance at the Annual Academy Awards .
But the Humphrey family have always been
movie goers . A "Family that goes to the movies
together" enJoys life together .
I am particularly glad to see members of
the press present . Perhaps that great show business
newspaper, VARIETY, might headline this evening as
"HHH FLACK FOR JACK'S CLAQUE . "
SALUTE
I am here not just as a tribute to Jack,
as important as that is, but to pay tribute to the Variety
Clubs 1 -- to the men and women of the motion picture,
theater, TV and allied entertainment industries.
What blessings you have brought to countless
Americans -- to ill and handicapped youngsters, in
particular. Your Sunshine Coaches and countless other
philanthropies have been a joy to behold.
Within this room are both Variety Club pioneers
of your industry and men who have attained great renown
within the past few years.
A mutual symbol of their -- your industry
is service. There has never been a good cause in which
your industry theater owners and allied businesses --
have not served your u. S. Government -- in Savings Bond,
blood donations and countless other good causes.
- 2-
CITIES
As President Johnson ' s liaison with the
nation ' s mayors , I am here to assure you that we want
healthy cities , prosperous cities ; that means roth inner
cities , suburbia and exburbia .
We don ' t want whole sections of America ' s
cities to decay .
We want our streets and roads to be safe and
modern so that people can easily drive wherever they
want to go -- to downtown theaters or suburban theaters .
We want to reduce the toll of crime because we know the
cost of vandalism, on many cities .
Your thousands of drive- ins are called
"ozoners . " We want the air that people breathe in
the countryside and in the city to be fresh , by
defeating the pollution problem .
INTERNATIONAL
Jack has put his constructive imprint - - not
only on the U. S. motion picture industry , but on other
nations ' film industries . This is so very appropriate;
I know of no medium which is more international in nature
than motion pictures and , now, television . Indeed , your
film products are more closely identified with the United
States than any product made by any other industry . in our
country .
Your film earnings abroad are ~endously
helpful in improving our balance of payments . It is safe
to say that the Silver Screen abroad is a key to the
"golden" health of American exports .
The continued prosperity of America ' s film
industry is important, not only to the state of California,
to other states , such as right here in New York, but to
our overall economy .
Just back from Africa , I know that the image
which foreign peoples have is to considerable extent
dependent upon what they see on the screen .
From D. w. Griffith to George Stevens , from
"'Jfue Sheik" to "To Sir With Love", motion pictures have
changed our idea about the world . They have changed
America ' s idea about the rest of the world and the
world's idea about America .
