SECTION
A BETTER NEWSPAPER
With this issue tho Nevs changes from aseven-colum- n paper with
"patent" insides toa six-colum- newspaper. Thismeans that in the
future all of the matter con-tained in the News will be set up in
our ownoffice and the management of the paper willdictate what goes
into it.
This change was made in keeping with ourdesire to improve the
standard of the Newsand also with the idea that the advertisers
inthe News would reap a benefit through havingtheir ads placed in
better positions.
We hope you will like the change, and be-lieve you will. There
are otherto be made which will make the Newd a betterpaper for the
reader and also for the adver-tiser. Watch the News each week and
see theimprovement.

SENATOR ALLDREDOE
The Santa IV New Mexican this weekprint the pietuie of State
Senator ('II. Alldredge of this city; aUn a Urivfbiography. While
It may seem a littlelike boasting, we want to say that thepicture
of the Ttienuicaii Senator i
Mie of the best looking that the New
Mexican has published. f courio Representative Campbell i not
included inthis comparison).
Mr. Alldredge wa born iu Indiana, and is fortv one vein old. He
was
rcai ed on a farm ami taught school forsome time, lie studied
law at the I'ni- -
veisity of Indiana and was admittedto the bar iu that utate. lie
came westiu ll'iin mid located at Mangum, Oklu.He came tw New
Mexico iu limit and In- -
cated iu Tiieuincnri, where he ha sincepracticed his profession,
lie i a partner in the tlrm of Saxon & Alldredge. He i married
and lia two children.
- - oaov. Mcdonald
Though William ('. Mcdonald, thenew governor of New Mexico, lias
beenin public life for a quarter if a centuryhe is a comparatively
unknown man, when it comes to the great majority ofthe people
knowing him intimately. The iiiipieun the gieal mass ol peoplehave
of him is .superficial and gencialand it would be presumption to
pass onhi qunlitlcatic-u- s for the executive of-fice. On the other
hand a brief biographical nii'linc might be given ofwhat he has
been and what he ha ac-complished: whom he has served andwhat
honors luivc come to him. Thatwill, iu part, foiui a bai for
pieseutjudgment. His inaugural .iddies giveadditional ground for
gauging whatmanner of man this new executive isand what sou of
otlieial he will likelyprove to be. Then there aie his campaigu
utterances and the opinion thathis friends ami associates have of
him,and from these the judgment is a fa-vorable one.
It i likely that (lovcrnor Mcdonaldwill be safe and s;iuc; that
he will notengage iu any wild political or eco-nomical experiments;
that ho has thewelfare ot New Mexico at heart. Muchwill depend on
the men who will stir-roun-
him a advisors, his otlieial In inMy. for therein lies tin1 li
rt test of ex-ecutive ability to select men who canbe trusted
without being watched, menwho have initiative and yet will not
gooff on a tangent, or are to servile amimere flntteiej'.
f.iovcmor McDonald may make him-self very popular and yet net be
a suc-cessful governor in the real .sense ofthe word success; he
may strengthenand build up hi party and yet makea miserable failure
of hi udmiulstralion: but if he icjcets and discardpolicies
becau.se they are wrong anddoe things becaue they are right, heis
bound to give his administration aname and fame that will out li
anymere evanescent populan'v. And thepeople believe he will do
it.

honesty ofa subscriber to pay a small debt, it Inext to a necessity
for a home paperto continue sending the "paper after thetime ha
expired. It Is not necessaryfor the city dailies or weeklies to
fol-low this rule, mm their subscribers live

honor to knowthat we do not doubt their integrityand continue to
