The tsunami is a series of water waves

caused by the displacement of a large

volume of a body of water, typically an ocean

or a large lake . Earthquakes , volcanic

eruptions and other underwater explosions

(including detonations of underwater.)

How are tsunamis generated Tsunamis can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Tectonic earthquakes are a particular kind of earthquake that are associated with the earth's crustal deformation; when these earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the deformed area is displaced from its equilibrium position. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass, which acts under the influence of gravity, attempts to regain its equilibrium. When large areas of the sea floor elevate or subside, a tsunami can be created.

On the average, there are two tsunamis per

year somewhere in the world which cause

damage near the source. Approximately

every 15 years a destructive, Pacific-wide

tsunami occurs. The destructive tsunami on

Dec 26th, 2004 on the Indian Coast seems to

have occurred for the first time in the

history.

What to do after a tsunami Continue listening to a NOAA Weather Radio, Coast Guard emergency frequency station, or other reliable source for emergency information. The tsunami may have damaged roads, bridges, or other places that may be unsafe. Help injured or trapped persons. Give first aid where appropriate. Call for help. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of further injury. Help a neighbour who may require special assistance--infants, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Elderly people and people with disabilities may require additional assistance. People who care for them or who have large families may need additional assistance in emergency situations.

Tsunamis in India The first tsunami to struck

India was back in December 31, 1881.

However, the government of India indicated

that around 11,000 people died and more

than 5,000 were missing and were assumed

dead by the Home Affairs Ministry. An

estimation points out that about 380,000

Indians displaced by this tsunami. It is

expected that reconstruction of these

affected places would cost over 1.2 billion

dollars from the World Bank.
