MISSION STATEMENT

Residing in one location, The Switzer Group and New York Engineers’ goal is to seamlessly integrate design for both interior architecture and mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering. With a combined staff of 71 members working in two shifts: 8 – 5 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 1:00 a.m., we are able to create high quality designs with speed and efficiency; ultimately, having the ability to be highly responsive to our clients at any hour. This in itself sets our team apart because we can respond to challenges within a quick turnaround time and produce a complete design specific to each individual client’s needs.

THE BENEFITS OF RETAINING A COMBINED TEAM THAT RESIDES IN ONE LOCATION ARE:

• Early collaboration and brainstorming sessions• Reoccurring “one-time” approvals with Department of Building (DOB), Fire Depart ment of New York, and Department of Environmental Protection, decreasing the amount of department visits, therefore speeding up project schedule • Accuracy in coordination of drawings due to face to face contact• Substantial decrease in change orders• Seamless construction process• A more high functioning space

The design of your space is governed by interior architectural layouts which subsequently impacts engineering such as sprinkler head and fire alarm locations. Therefore by simultaneous coordinating architecture and engineering, most issues are resolved prior to construction gaining valuable time and money.

With a staff of 51 and project completions in excess of 65 million square feet, the firm has gained industry rec-ognition for innovation in design services, efficiency and quality. It is our belief that the client is an integral part of the process, creating a collaborative experience in milestone decisions and design solutions.

TSG has maintained a top national ranking by Interior Design Magazine since the early 1980’s. The firm enjoys a client retention rate in excess of 80% which includes its first two clients, IBM and Citibank. After nearly 40 years, these original clients still represent a large share of the firm’s current workload.

With lasting leadership in the design industry, TSG continues to maintain the highest level of design excellence, client satisfaction, and technological advances.

DESIGN VALUES

At The Switzer Group, our design philosophy is based on understanding the client’s goals and aspirations. TSG is not formulaic and we help articulate the client’s story through dia-logue, listening and providing various branding options. This ultimately improves not only the brand but the efficiency of business operations as well. It is a process of discovery which leads to not only a beautiful environment, but one that better serves the needs of the client.

We pride ourselves on being problem solvers, researchers and creators. Our philosophy puts an emphasis on listening intently to our clients and finding the right solution tailored specifi-cally to each one. Our talent and size lends itself to personal attention from start to finish. Creating designs that meet the changing needs of our clients is critical to everything we do and we continuously search out and remain on the technological forefront.

PROCESS

The Switzer Group’s process is rooted in our philosophy of listening, dialogue and providing options in the process of discovery with the client. We present to the client a variety of

design alternatives and together discuss the attributes of each scheme. We work with the client to determine the pros and cons to reach a preferred design direction. This process fully engages the client in a meaningful and informed dialogue with TSG. By drawing the client into this process, each possibility can be examined in the light of logic that it represents in terms of solving issues of place and program together.

Watson is an artificially intelligent computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language. Watson was named after IBM’s first CEO and well-known business reformator Thomas J. Watson. The computer system was specifically developed to answer questions on the quiz show Jeopardy. In 2011, Watson competed on Jeopardy! against former winners Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings. Watson received the first prize of $1 million.

In February 2013, IBM announced that Watson software system’s first commercial application would be for utilization management decisions in lung cancer treatment at Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center in conjunction with health insurance company WellPoint. IBM Watson’s business chief Manoj Saxena says that 90% of nurses in the field who use Watson now follow its guidance.

This center, The Watson CIC (Client Interaction Center) is where clients come to experience Watson and learn about its capabilities. The M&C labs on two of the floors provide solutions to clients - designing and solving problems for their customers. The Watson CIC on half of the fifth floor is where Watson resides and is also where clients are brought to solution their problems with Watson. Included are desking systems, POD workstations, which are collaborative, a mediascape, study areas and a maker’s space (a moveable rail wall system) to accommodate one to six rooms depending on needs. Unique materials used are marker boards, ADOTTA wall systems and glass throughout, and felt Ecoustic wall treatments.

StatusCompleted 2013

A long term client, General Motors retained The Switzer Group to relocate their Asset Management and Treasury Groups from an office that was more than 20 years old, to two floors at 1345 Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. General Motors asked The Switzer Group to develop a change management plan which enabled the adoption of an egalitarian approach to the office design that reflects modern working conditions. The Switzer Group instituted new office standards, which include smaller individual footprints and personal offices, low work stations and clear glass office fronts which allow for more communal spaces, including larger conference rooms, hoteling stations which convert to meeting rooms, teleconference rooms and a high end communal café.

In addition to the overall design, we approached this project with the understanding that the 20,000 SF Treasury Floor would soon be migrated out of state, and as such, worked to keep the physical intervention on this floor to a minimum, while maintaining consistency with the design quality

of the Asset Management floor. To do this, The Switzer Group retained the existing perimeter walls and reused the existing furniture from the job site, while opening up the interior and changing the office fronts to glass to allow maximum natural light throughout the space.

The General Motors brand was incorporated throughout, taking the car as the concept for the furnishings and finishes, and featuring burl wood, perforated leather, shiny pops of sports car color, car grill accents, and bands of iconic General Motor car images.

VTB Capital is one of the largest banking institutions in Russia with several locations worldwide. The new office of 12,000 square feet at 452 Fifth Avenue is their first presence in the United States. Management requested that all of the staff have visibility of the spectacular views. This concept created interactive collaboration. We were able to achieve this by the use of a glass partition system. In addition, providing a raised

floor allowed for ultimate flexibility. The resulting environment is both comfortable and inviting to attract quality employees.

For the Manhattan Campus Relocation, The Switzer Group was commissioned to relocate St. John’s University’s Manhattan Campus to a new, state-of-the-art classroom and administration building. The new, modern design emphasizes natural light, spaciousness and way finding. It consists of a large multi-purpose room on the main level just off the large lobby/reception and gathering area. Unique branding is found throughout the

three levels. On the second level, classrooms run along the perimeter of the building affording spacious views and light. StatusCompleted 2007

Founded in 1947, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports the work of the United Nations Children’s Fund by raising funds for its programs and increasing awareness of the challenges facing the world’s children. The Switzer Group was retained to design their new 70,000 square foot headquarters in Manhattan.

The Switzer Group was asked to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for staff and visitors that reflected The United States Fund for UNICEF’s mission. The Switzer Group began by performing due diligence to find an appropriate site for the new location. Once a location was identified, The Switzer team began space planning that allowed natural light to flow throughout. To achieve this goal, most of the private offices were placed in the interior of the space

with workstations on the perimeter. The workstations were fitted with glass tops allowing the light to filter through space and create extended vistas. The use of ambient and indirect lighting supported the overall design.

The overall project consists of 2 floors of general office and private office space and a third “destination floor” which includes multipurpose meeting room, boardroom, large dining area, data room, interview room, training room and quiet rooms.

The entire plan was designed using LEED concepts including recycled carpet, local materials, and lighting.
