Your purchase helps me continue to represent the pet food consumer voice with regulatory authorities. The List are foods that I would trust to feed my own pets. In my years of pet food consumer advocacy, I’ve learned too much to risk my pets life with just any old pet food. Not that the foods in this List are perfect, everyone is susceptible to human error, but to the best of my knowledge, these are pet foods that I could, would, and in some cases do…feed to my own pets (I cook for my pets most of the time). Each of these companies have shown me consistency in their efforts to produce a high quality food. A pet food that is not on the List - I emailed and asked some simple questions about their food. This was a small company whose ingredients looked good. My country of origin of ingredients questions stumped them. They didn't know - and admitted to me they'd need a few days to investigate. About a week later I received a response from the company that they were still working on this - trying to learn the country of origin of all ingredients used in their foods. My response back to them - ‘why don't you know?’ This is very basic information that every manufacturer should know about their ingredients (pet food and human food). This is one reason why some foods make ‘The List’ and many do not. The best pet foods know their suppliers - skillfully choose their suppliers - because they want to produce a safe and healthy food. Many foods that don’t make the list don’t care who there suppliers are, their concern is sales. The best food to give your pet - in my opinion - is lightly processed. Even though there are some high quality kibble foods on The List, kibble would be my last choice for my own pets. A lightly cooked or raw food would be my first choice for my own pets. I would not feed my cats a kibble food and I would only use kibble as a partial food for my dogs. If your local independent pet food store does not carry these foods, ask them to. Or you can order them online from the manufacturer or online retailers. It is beneficial to work with a local pet food store or directly with the manufacturer - building a relationship - to help monitor your pet’s health on the food you choose. Thank you for purchasing The 2015 List and supporting the work ofTruthaboutPetFood.com. Your purchase helps me continue to representthe pet food consumer voice with regulatory authorities.

The List are foods that I would trust to feed my own pets. In my years of pet foodconsumer advocacy, I’ve learned too much to risk my pets life with just any old petfood. Not that the foods in this List are perfect, everyone is susceptible to humanerror, but to the best of my knowledge, these are pet foods that I could, would, andin some cases do…feed to my own pets (I cook for my pets most of the time). Eachof these companies have shown me consistency in their efforts to produce a highquality food.

A pet food that is not on the List - I emailed and asked some simple questionsabout their food. This was a small company whose ingredients looked good. Mycountry of origin of ingredients questions stumped them. They didn't know - andadmitted to me they'd need a few days to investigate. Carna4 Pet Food

Carna4 is a Canadian pet food company, and not an ordinary kibble pet food.Carna4 Pet Food is “gently oven dried”allowing the food to provide highernutrient content than typical kibble(extruded) foods. A very unique thing ofthis pet food is their use of sproutedseeds. Known as 'super foods' in thehuman food world, sprouted seeds can provide amazing nutrition to petsas well. Another big plus I like about this pet food is they utilize food –not supplements – to provide dogs a complete diet.

Meat and vegetable ingredients are CFIA (Canadian equivalent ofUSDA) inspected and approved.

Free of pre-mix vitamins/minerals. Uses food to provide a balanceddiet.

Organic sprouted seeds are added to the pet foods. These seedsare a source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and provide a source

of probiotics to the dog diet.

For pet food consumers that wish to feed their dog a raw meat diet,Carna4 produces a "food topping" made from sprouted seeds to

balance the diet including probiotics, enzymes and antioxidants.

The Honest KitchenPet Food

The Honest Kitchen Pet Food was thefirst pet food company to receivepermission from FDA (Letter of NoObjection) to make the 'human gradeingredients' claim on their labels. Thiswas a ground breaking effort thatcertainly raised the bar in pet food. In2014, Honest Kitchen renewed theirLetter of No Objection from the FDA.

It's a known fact that employees ofHonest Kitchen taste test theiringredients, but they aren't the onlyones. Owner Lucy Postins shared this

picture of herchildren nibbling onthe pet food ingredients (shared here withpermission). That's how confident thiscompany is about the quality and safety oftheir ingredients.

This company - in my experience - has neverhesitated to answer any question, even the difficult questions and evenduring difficult times. The owner once responded to my email when(later) I learned she was out of the country dealing with a family crisis.

Hound and Gatos Pet Foods manufactures a simplehigh quality complete and balanced pet food. Simpleonly in that this pet food is meat -and only meat - plus supplementsto balance the diet. All meats areUSDA inspected and approved.

Recently consumers experiencedshortages of H & G pet food onstore shelves. This shortage led to a discovery thatseparates this company from many others. The manufacturer told me hestruggled to find quality meat sources in the U.S. (or from proved safecountry of origin) and refused to purchase imported meat. "ONLY 3% ofall imports are inspected by the USDA. That leaves 77% wide open thatcould be dangerous." This company chose to waive sales and wait untilquality meat sourcing was found.

Hound & Gatos Pet Foods tests the DNA of pet food batches. Especially inlight of recent studies proving some pet foods do not contain the animalproteins stated on the label, this special effort by this company givesconsumers assurance they are buying what the label states.

Lucky Dog Cuisine is another companyon the List I feel I know very well. Oneof the things that sets this pet foodapart is their demand for the finestingredients. Several years ago LuckyDog Cuisine wanted to add a fishvariety dog food. Their search for aquality fish source led to the discoverythat most fish sold in the U.S. (actuallyaround the world) makes a round tripto China for processing before it is soldto consumers. Determined not toproduce a pet food with fish processedin China, this company searched (andsearched) to find a U.S. supplier withprocessing in the U.S. They care - about every single ingredient in theirfoods.

Lucky Dog Cuisine Canada is run by the founder's daughter, sourcingingredients from Canada. Meats are purchased locally from a human foodbutcher in Toronto.

This is a commercial pet food that provides a personal touch. Every batchof pet food is made by the owners themselves.
