“We’re going to have play-ers around us that are self-less, that are accountable andthat have a blind trust in thegroup. Once we establish thatculture, once we establishthat foundation, and it’s fromownership on down, then wewill be able to start craftingour identity.

“Our identity will be oneof a tough-minded, physical,defense-first group that issmart in all aspects of thegame on both sides of thefloor. Our guys will feel it,they will breathe it, they willtouch it and they will see itfrom myself and my staff ona daily basis. I say daily,because this is a process. Ican’t wait to get started.”

Those were among the firstwords uttered by MikeBrown at an April 24 pressconference to announce hehad been rehired as Cavalierscoach.

They’ve been repeated, inone form or another, dozensof times since — and notjust by Brown.

From Anderson Varejao toTristan Thompson to AlonzoGee to even jaded membersof the media, everyone, itseems, is buying intoBrown’s defense-first mantra.

The most vocal proponenthas been Cavs point guardKyrie Irving, who didn’t playa lot of it over his first twoseasons in the NBA.

More impressive, the 21-

year-old is not only saying allthe right things, he’s goingout on the floor and doing hisbest to carry out Brown’swishes.

“That’s so important,”Brown said. “When otherguys see him doing it, whenthey see him buying in, itsends a message.”

Brown’s message, mean-while, is crystal clear, even toan All-Star like Irving: If youwant to play, you had betterplay “D.”

“We have enough talent toscore baskets,” Irving said.“We just have to get stops.”

That’s something the Cavsdidn’t do often enough underformer coach Byron Scott,who talked a fantastic gamebut didn’t coach a very goodone, especially on the defen-

sive end.Scott might have had a

plan and philosophy, but itwasn’t readily apparent. Onenight Cavs guards wentunder screens, the next nightthey went over. One night thebig men popped out to help,the next they retreated to pro-tect the basket.

Add in that guards Irvingand Dion Waiters sometimeslooked like bullfighters wav-ing a cape as their man drovepast them — plus the factCleveland’s scatterbrainedrotations often left the oppo-nent’s best shooters wideopen — and the Cavs werethe worst defensive team inthe league last season.

That will change.Actually, it’s already

changed.

Ask Brown about defenseand his answers go on andon, the excitement in hisvoice building as he talksabout concepts like “show-ing,” “tagging” and “havingfive guys on a string.”

His practice sessions canbe even longer. Early in thepreseason, media memberswere kept waiting for fourhours as Brown held a prac-tice, stopped it for lengthyexplanations and then heldan even longer film session.

“I loved every minute ofit,” Irving said. “Every sixhours of it. It’s more of amental push, a mental barrieryou have to get through. He’sour coach and we’re the play-ers.”

revolutionary, but they arestrict, consistent and wellthought out. They’ve alsobeen successful.

Guards always fight overthe top of screens. Big men“show” to slow down theopposing guard or make himtake a little wider route,which gives Cleveland’sperimeter defenders time torecover. Cavs big men thenhustle back to their man,knowing a third defender has“opened up” and will bethere to help, if needed.

There is tons more, but allthe principles and theoriescome back to one of the mostbasic themes in basketball:Stop your man. If you can dothat, a lot of double-teamsand weak-side help won’t beneeded. The defense won’talways be scrambling, tryingto recover.

“I like to teach,” Brownsaid. “In my opinion, theseguys seem eager and willingto learn.

“Everybody, I believe,wants to win,” he added. “Inthis league, I believe youhave to defend to win.”

The 43-year-old Brownknows a thing or two aboutwinning. He led the Cavs toa 272-138 regular-seasonrecord in his five-year stintfrom 2005-10, including 66-and 61-win seasons in hisfinal two years, and his .663winning percentage is thebest in franchise history.

Brown’s teams have alsowon at least one playoffseries in every full season hehas coached — he spent afull season in charge of theLos Angeles Lakers in 2011-12 and was fired early in2012-13 — making him the

only coach in NBA historywith a minimum of fiveyears experience to hold thatdistinction.

But even more impressivethan his 314-167 lifetimerecord (.652) in the regularseason, the man who led theCavs to the 2007 NBA Finalsseems much more comfort-able, confident and open ashe begins his second stint inCleveland.

Beyond that, Brown issecure enough to know hisstrengths and weakness. He’snot the greatest offensivemind in the world, but he’ssmart enough to trust hisassistants — and his players.

Brown will give his troopsfreedom and even tolerate afew mistakes at the offensiveend — as long as his guysare busting their backsides atthe defensive end.

Plus, he’s got Irving, whois so talented with the ball inhis hands he often makessomething out of nothing.

“Our movement on offenseis such that I’m picking andchoosing my spots,” Irvingsaid. “We have enough talentto score points.

“Right now, our focus is onthe defensive end and gettingstops and me holding myman to a limited amount ofpoints. The offense will takecare of itself.”

Irving almost singlehand-edly won the Cavs a handfulof games over his first twoseasons, but there werenights when he scored 30points and also gave up thatmany, though they were oftendivided between the oppos-ing team’s starting pointguard and backup.

This season, Irving’s scor-ing average will likely beclose to the 22.5 points heput up a year ago, but with ahealthy Varejao, an improved

Waiters and the addition ofAndrew Bynum and JarrettJack, his assist averageshould jump considerablyfrom the 5.9 he averaged in2012-13.

“I have a goal of averagingin the seven to nine range,”he said. “I have a lot of con-fidence in my teammates thatwe can get easy buckets andguys can make plays for me.

“We’ve got talent on thisteam. My assists should goup enough. I’m pretty sureI’ll take care of that depart-ment.”

Irving’s bigger goal, as hebluntly stated on media daythis year and has repeated onseveral occasions, is “to bethe best player in the NBA.”

In the offseason, the 6-foot-3, 191-pounder came tothe conclusion that in orderfor his name to even be men-tioned among the best, hehad to lead the Cavs to amuch better record than the21-45 and 24-58 marks theyhad in his first two years inthe league.

“After the season, Ireminded myself that with(wanting to be the best)comes a lot of responsibilityon myself,” Irving said. “Ican’t do it without my team-

mates. The most importantthing is we have to wingames and make the playoffs.

“When I said that com-ment, I meant it,” he added.“But I can’t do it without myteammates.”

In the end, Brown’s defen-sive emphasis and desire towin are totally intertwinedwith Irving’s quest to be thebest and also to win. TheCavs can’t win consistentlywithout playing defense,while Irving can’t be the bestwithout consistent winning.

“We definitely have thepieces this year, whetheryoung or old or young, oldveterans,” Irving said.

“We have a chance to dosomething special,” headded. “Our youth is goingto keep us going.”

Soon after, Irving saidsomething that had to bemusic to Brown’s defensive-minded ears.

“This year, we have the tal-ent to outscore teams,” hesaid. “But we have a defen-sive-minded coach and ourfocus is on that end of thefloor.

“If we want to achieve ourgoals, our focus has to be onthat end of the floor.”
