The SPEED of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything, Stephen M.R. Covey

Disclose and reveal expectations. Discuss and validate them. Don’t assume expectations are clear.

Hold yourself accountable. Hold others accountable. Take responsibility for results.

Say what you’re going to do. Then do what you say you’re going to do.

Establish a track record of results. Get the right things done. Make things happen. Accomplish what you’re hired to do.

Continuously improve. Increase your capabilities. Be a constant learner.Develop feedback systems—both formal and informal.

Genuinely care for others. Respect the dignity of every person and every role. Show kindness…

Tell the truth in a way people can verify. Get real and genuine. Err on the side of disclosure.

Take issues head on. Address the tough stuff directly. Acknowledge the unsaid. Lead out courageously in conversation. Don’t skirt the real issues.

Tell the truth. Let people know where you stand. Call things what they are. Don’t spin the truth.

Make things right. Apologize quickly. Demonstrate personal humility. Don’t let pride get in the way.

Listen before you speak. Understand. Diagnose. Listen with your ears...and your eyes and heart.

Give credit to others. Speak about people as if they were present. Don’t disclose private information.

Demonstrate a propensity to trust. Extend trust abundantly to those who have earned it. Extend trust conditionally to those who are earning your trust.

First seek to understand the other person, and only then try to be understood. Stephen Covey presents this habit as the most important principle of interpersonal relations. Effective listening is not simply echoing what the other person has said through the lens of one's own experience. Rather, it is putting oneself in the perspective of the other person, listening empathically for both feeling and meaning.

Seek First to Understand

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey

Be ProactiveChange starts from within, and highly effective people make the decision to improve their lives through the things that they can influence rather than by simply reacting to external forces.

Begin with the End in MindDevelop a principle-centered personal mission statement. Extend the mission statement into long-term goals based on personal principles.

Put First Things FirstSpend time doing what fits into your personal mission, observing the proper balance between production and building production capacity. Identify the key roles that you take on in life, and make time for each of them.

Think Win/WinSeek agreements and relationships that are mutually beneficial. In cases where a "win/win" deal cannot be achieved, accept the fact that agreeing to make "no deal" may be the best alternative.

SynergizeThrough trustful communication, find ways to leverage individual differences to create a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts. Through mutual trust and understanding, one often can solve conflicts and find a better solution than would have been obtained through either person's own solution.

Sharpen the Saw Take time out from production to build production capacity through personal renewal of the physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Maintain a balance among these dimensions.

Attitude

Mindset of a Champion, David Cook

train for how you’ll react at that pivotal moment

Focus your mind on the opportunity in front of you

Don't fall into the trap of depending on others’ opinion of you

Overcome your biggest pitfalls

set the right kind of goals that will stretch and move you beyond

Goals not fueled by passion = empty set of words on a piece of paper

preparation is the key to success

The one thing you can control 100%

Take action = first step is to choose

Self-improvement is not about comparing yourself to others

Good to great : Why some companies make the leap -- and others don’t, Jim Collins

“Level 5 leaders” display an unusual mix of intense determination and profound humility

doing one thing better than anyone else in the world

…an unrelenting inner sense of determination

every team member is afforded personal empowerment and latitude

securing high-quality, high-talent individuals

…confront the Brutal Facts

personal ego and individual financial gain are not as important as the long-term benefit of the team and the company

…determine what you are deeply passionate about

reinforce and affirm the company’s "hedgehog" competencies

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”— Dalai Lama

Virtuous Leadership: An Agenda for Personal Excellence , Alexandre Havard

Leaders are not born, but trained. Why? Because virtue is a habit acquired through practice.

Courage Staying the course and resisting pressures of all kinds

Self-ControlSubordinating passions to the spirit and direct them towards the fulfillment of the mission at hand

Prudence

Justice Giving every individual his or her due.

Enhancing our ability to make right decisions

Leadership is a question of character (virtue, freedom, self-improvement),not temperament (biology and genetics).

MagnanimityThe habit of striving towards great things. Leaders are magnanimous in their dreams, visions, and sense of mission; and also in their capacity to challenge themselves and those around them.

HumilityThe habit of service. Leaders pull rather than push, teach rather than command, inspire rather than berate.
