IV. New Business

a. New Course Proposal: English 9-10

Dr. Budd noted that both of today’s new course proposals have been driven by

needs of segments of the THS special education population. Ms. Beaman

presented the English 9-10 course proposal as necessary to assist special

education students three years or more below grade level in literacy. Ms. Petitti

moved to bring the new course proposal to the Board of Education for approval at

Page 3: TRUMBULL, CONNECTICUT Curriculum Committee 8:15 a.m ...€¦ · TRUMBULL, CONNECTICUT Curriculum Committee of the Trumbull Board of Education Special Meeting Long Hill Administration

its meeting scheduled for June 13, 2017, and Mr. Ward seconded. The motion was

unanimously agreed to.

b. New Course Proposal: Science Explorations

Dr. Budd explained that this new course proposal would allow for all special

education students to be included in science programming. Ms. Beaman noted the

value of science to these students’ lives. Ms. Timpanelli clarified that typical

peers would only be able to take the course as a general elective after their three

years of mandated science credits, and also suggested students participating in the

course as community service. Ms. Timpanelli moved to bring the new course

proposal to the Board of Education for approval at its meeting scheduled for June

13, 2017, and Mr. Ward seconded. The motion was unanimously agreed to.

e. Physical Education Grades 6-8 Curriculum Guide

Dr. Budd commended Mr. Berecz and his team for the development of this

curriculum guide, last revised in 2004. Mr. Berecz outlined the nine units of study

and their importance to life beyond middle school. Ms. Timpanelli and Ms. Petitti

stressed the importance of equitable experiences at both middle schools and asked

Dr. Budd to explore this topic further with Mr. Berecz in planning for

professional development and program improvements for 2017-18. Mr.

DeOliveira, Ms. Tyszka, and Ms. Breakell detailed the importance of lifelong

fitness, including stimulating units involve core strengthening and pickleball. Mr.

Ward noted the importance of the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment, and

asked Dr. Budd and Mr. Berecz to explore further the improvement of those

scores at all schools where applicable. Ms. Timpanelli moved to bring the

curriculum guide to the Board of Education for approval at its meeting scheduled

for June 13, 2017, and Mr. Ward seconded. The motion was unanimously agreed

to.

d. Visual Arts Grades 6-8 Curriculum Guide

Dr. Budd noted the thoroughness of this curriculum guide revision. Ms. Edwards

explained the structure of the middle school visual arts program, and then

explored how problem-solving and creative thinking are integrated throughout all

units for all three years. Ms. Timpanelli supported the development of

interdisciplinary connections wherever possible, and Ms. Petitti and Mr. Ward

commended the middle school students’ visual arts products they had recently

seen at the Art Show at Sacred Heart University. Mr. Ward moved to bring the

curriculum guide to the Board of Education for approval at its meeting scheduled

for June 13, 2017, and Ms. Petitti seconded. The motion was unanimously agreed

to.

c. Bake Shop II Curriculum Guide

Chef Voytek exhibited photographs of Bake Shop II students at work to illustrate

the baking work done throughout all units of this recently piloted course. He also

showed copies of the texts used in the course, and explained the depth probed in

each of the four units of this double-period semester-long course. Committee

members commended the authentic applications of culinary knowledge in which

Page 4: TRUMBULL, CONNECTICUT Curriculum Committee 8:15 a.m ...€¦ · TRUMBULL, CONNECTICUT Curriculum Committee of the Trumbull Board of Education Special Meeting Long Hill Administration

students continue to be involved. Mr. Ward moved to bring the curriculum guide

to the Board of Education for approval at its meeting scheduled for June 13, 2017,

and Ms. Timpanelli seconded. The motion was unanimously agreed to.

f. Beginning Ceramics Curriculum Guide

Dr. Budd briefly explained that the revisions to this curriculum guide are purely

structural: since the Curriculum Committee and the Board of Education had

recently approved Beginning Ceramics moving from a full-year course to a half-

year course, Mr. Youngberg had accordingly adjusted the length of each unit. Ms.

Petitti moved to bring the curriculum guide to the Board of Education for

approval at its meeting scheduled for June 13, 2017, and Ms. Timpanelli

seconded. The motion was unanimously agreed to.

g. Report, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessments

Dr. Budd thanked the Committee members for their very industrious work over

the past school year; he distributed a double-sided page (attached) charting the

curriculum guides, new courses, and new textbooks reviewed and approved by the

Curriculum Committee from July 2016 through June 2017.

Mr. Ward moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:21 a.m.; Ms. Timpanelli seconded. The motion was

unanimously agreed to.
