  • Its all about people.Every single day, every single second, a truck is delivering its cargo to a destination somewhere in the world. All these transport assignments stem from mans constant need of development and renewal. Our job at Volvo Trucks is to meet this need. Without compromising on either quality or safety, and without impacting the environment more than necessary. Using our experience and expertise, we have set up a clear goal: to be your first-choice supplier of transport solutions. Now and in the future.

  • The only way is ahead. Thats why we have to look back.Sweden. 3000 years ago. The people here lived in tough conditions. Life was a constant battle against a severe climate and long, dark months for much of the year. But they survived and flourished thanks to their inventiveness and their ability to stay one step ahead. We bear that heritage with us to this very day. Functionality. Simplicity. Dependability. Light. Its all part of the Scandinavian soul. Against that background, its not so strange that Volvo was established towards the end of the 1920s. Our founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson felt that the trucks of their day simply didnt measure up.

Some things just never change. We made our first truck in 1927. A lot has happened since then, but some things havent changed one bit. We still feel that everything can be improved. Our deter-mination to solve problems has meant that we have often been the first in the world to introduce cutting-edge innovations and make technical breakthroughs. That is why Volvo Trucks is renowned for driving progress for a better future. The ability to improve combined with our three core values quality, safety and environmental care characterise everything we have ever done, everything we do and everything we will do in the future. You get them along with the vehicle when you purchase a Volvo truck.

  • A cleaner future.Volvo is conducting intensive research into fuels such as DME and biogas, but we are also working on various ways of further improving the efficiency of our existing engines. One example is the I-SAM hybrid concept, where an electric motor helps the diesel engine so effectively that fuel consumption can be cut by up to 35%. However, the focus is not only on engines. In 2007, our factory in Tuve, Sweden, will probably become the worlds first vehicle manufacturing plant that is entirely carbon dioxide-neutral. It will run solely on wind-generated electricity and will be heated entirely by biofuels. In 2008 it will be time for our factories in Ghent in Belgium and Ume in Sweden to follow the same path. These three factories account for half of our total worldwide truck production.

Why have three trucks when two are enough? We dont sit idly by when we see that something can be improved. That is why we pursue many import-ant issues all the way into the political arena. For instance, we have initiated a proposal within the EU regarding longer truck rigs. By allowing rigs totalling 25.25 metres in length as standard, just two rigs would be able to do the work of three of the shorter models that are the most common within the EU today. Just imagine the result: 30% fewer trucks on the motorways. Longer rigs also mean lower total fuel consumption and lower emissions. The proposal shows that a haulage firm would be able to reduce its transport costs by about 23%. Emissions of carbon dioxide in Europe would be cut by between 10 and 20 million tonnes a year. Important improvements, wouldnt you say?

A breakdown has a major impact on our customers, who lose both time and money. That is why we are investing heavily in making the truck as reliable as possible. Our research teams work together with customers in the field to see how exactly trucks are used. The experiences gained here are harnessed to make improvements and create new functions. When the time comes for production, we check and double-check every single manufacturing procedure before the truck is allowed to proceed to the next station in the production chain. And once the truck is out on the road, earning its living, service, parts and maintenance are always close at hand. Thats quite simply the way it has to be.

The truck should keep on moving. And moving. And moving.

More money left over for you.Fuel is expensive, and its not going to get any cheaper. Even though we lead the way in the development of alter-

native fuels, diesel is going to remain the most efficient solution for the foreseeable future. However, the com-bustion of diesel fuel naturally has a negative effect on our environment. Over the past 10 years, we have therefore succeeded in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from our trucks by 20 percent. This has been achieved thanks to more efficient engines, better gearboxes and reduced air drag and rolling resistance. One consequence of this focus is improved fuel economy. And thats good for our customers. Its also good for society in general. And good for us too.

  • The driver is the key to your profit. What makes a driver a really good driver? We know that the working environment plays an important role in the equation. The better the preconditions for enjoying your time behind the wheel, the more productive you are. We therefore offer a working environment that is designed entirely around the truck drivers needs. Safety, comfort and other parameters are planned to achieve two things: efficiency and harmony. We would even dare say that our trucks are so well thought out that they transform good drivers into the best. And thus the most profitable.

Its all in the details. We dont build the worlds biggest or flashiest trucks. But we do aim to build the very best. The Scandinavian heritage can be clearly seen in our trucks, and the guiding themes are simplicity, cleanness, functionality and care. Volvo was the first truck maker in the world with a steel safety cage, deformable steering wheel, impact-friendly interior trim, three-point seat belt and airbag. With a Volvo truck, you also get good visibility and there is the option of specifying cameras if you want. Text-based communication between the truck and office reduces the risk of mistakes. The cli-mate is pleasant and the air-suspended seat is comfortable. The low noise level means you stay alert and reduce stress levels. An alarm system for the cab allows you to sleep soundly at night. Its all in the details.

Braking power when its needed.Long downhill gradients with a heavy load impose incredible wear on the wheel brakes. The Volvo Engine Brake (VEB) is a unique feature that efficiently solves the problem. In fact, it does it so efficiently that its braking power can be compared with that of an electronic or hydraulic auxiliary brake. Making life that much more secure for the driver.

An extra pair of eyes that are never distracted.Research shows that the human factor lies behind about 90% of all traffic accidents. If we can make the driver more alert, well make a lot of progress. One example of this is ACC Adaptive Cruise Control. Its a cruise control system that automat-ically maintains a set distance to the vehicle in front. Another example is our system that scans the drivers eyes while he is behind the wheel. If the driver focuses his eyes on something else for an unreasonable length of time or shows signs of drowsiness, the system alerts him. And hopefully helps avoid an accident.

Everyone should be safe.Other road users are naturally also entitled to the same degree of safety and security as the driver of a Volvo truck is. So its not surprising that we were the first to introduce FUPS (Front Underrun Protection System). There is a corresponding protection system for rear and the side impacts. Many of the safety features fitted to Volvos trucks today stem from the work done over the years by Volvos Accident Research Team. It was formed back in 1969 with the aim of investigating road accidents why they occur, what happens during the accident sequence and how they can be avoided in the first place. In combination with crash tests (our impact test against the cab is the toughest in the world) we know whats needed to build for safety. For everyones safety.

  • Development. But not just at any price. The truck is one of the most important and efficient transport methods. Thanks to its versatility, people, companies and society can develop freely. However, truck-based transport also has some negative effects. Exhaust and noise emissions, for example. We are part of this problem scenario, but we are also definitely part of the solution. Volvo wholeheartedly supports the Kyoto Protocol. We work actively to develop new technologies and are in favour of the use of alternative fuels that impose less of a burden on the environment. At the same time, of course, every innovation has to generate a commercial benefit. Otherwise, development will come to a halt.

  • Dialogue for the future. We want an open dialogue with customers, politicians, public authorities, the media and the general public. Only by working together can we create a smoothly functioning future for the transportation industry. We promise to take our responsibility for driving progress from the technological, commercial, environmental and social viewpoints. Get in touch with us if you have any questions, ideas or views.
