projected starting lineup
return is uncertain at this time when she will dress. The junior has been replaced by Randi Ashworth in the starting lineup.
LINEUPS - STARTERS With the exception of starting pitcher Ashlyn Williams, the Trojans do not have a player in the starting lineup in the same position as they played last season.
williams earns honor Senior Ashlyn Williams was honored this past week as the Sun Belt Conference Pitch-er of the Week. She went 3-2 on the week, but in the two losses only allowed three runs off of four hits; including throwing a one-hitter against 11th-ranked California. She followed that up with a three-hitter against Fresno State in a 2-1 loss. Williams also recorded a season-high 15 strikeouts against Bradley last week.
climbing the charts Junior shortstop Nikki Hollett is all ready second on the all-time single season list for home runs with 16 this season. The total surpasses the 12 hit by Tamra Howren hit back in 2004. The only number standing in her way is 23 - hit by Tamra Howren in 2005.
Junior Hayden Gann is slowly inching her way on to the list as she is sitting 13th overall with seven. One more home run by Gann, and she will tie four others for ninth all-time in a single season.
with runners in scoring position This year the Trojans are hitting .319 as a team with runners in scoring position, led by Nikki Hollett at .415 (17-for-41). She is followed in that category by Hayden Gann at .405 (17-for-42), while Michelle Hewett (.393) and Sarah Harris (.333) are each above .300 for the season.
among the best in the conference The Trojans are third in the Sun Belt Conference in batting average this season. The Trojans are currently hitting .324 as a team; trailing only Louisiana-Lafayette (.365) and South Alabama (.340).
2011 TROY SOFTBALL GAME NOTES PAGE 4
www.TROYTROJANS.com
The Trojans lead the conference in at-bats, runs scored, doubles and home runs this season. They are third in runs scored at 169; trailing only Louisiana-Lafayette (218) and South Alabama (170).
WEST COAST SWING The Trojans wrapped up their longest road trip of the season, spanning 12 games on the road on the West Coast - a trip that consumed 11 days away from home. The Trojans went 6-6 in those games; including 2-3 in the state of Nevada and 4-3 in the state of California.
It is the second time in two years the Trojans have played out West, as they traveled to Hawai’i last season.
playing ranked teams The Trojans have made a habit of playing ranked teams this season, all ready play-ing two teams that are currently ranked in the Top 25. The Trojans have faced both Alabama and Auburn this season, and will face another Top 25 team this weekend in California; along with Louisiana-Lafayette in a couple of weeks on the road.
The Trojans have faced or will face other teams that are receiving votes in the polls which include California, UAB, Kansas, South Alabama and Fresno State.
So far this season, the Trojans have reg-istered a 1-5 record in games against teams in the Top 25 or receiving votes. Although the Trojans have dropped five games against those teams, four have been decided by a single run - Auburn (2-1), Kansas (7-6) in extra innings, Califor-nia (1-0) and Fresno State (2-1).
power outbreak The Trojans have all ready hit 33 home runs this season in 31 games, tying the mark of 28 they hit last season.
cracking the poll this season For the first time this season, the Trojans cracked the USA Today/NFCA Poll. Al-though not listed in the Top 25, the Trojans appeared in the rankings tied for 33rd overall; tied with three other teams.
grove rebounds Troy junior righthander Morgan Groves suffered her first loss of the season on the road against San Diego in the Eller Media Classic. However, she rebounded to pick up a win over Cal State Fullerton out of the bullpen, as she worked six innings in
relief of starter Haley Hutchins.
backs against the wall The Trojans have gone back-to-back six times this season, and shortstop Nikki Hollett has been in the middle of all five times. The junior has gone back-to-back one time with freshman Kelly Luquette; while she has gone back-to-back with Hayden Gann five different times.
power from new players The Trojans have gotten home runs - first collegiate home runs this season from Taylor Smartt, Kortney Cooper, Michelle Hewett, Kelly Luquette, Randi Ashworth and Melissa Pratt.
WILLIAMS TO MISS ACTION Senior Ashlyn Williams will miss time beginning this weekend following surgerythat will not hamper her pitching ability. The senior underwent the procedure on the Monday following the All-Alabama Classic and will be ready to go again in 7-to-10 days for the Trojans. Williams split her first two decisions of the season - losing to Auburn and defeating UAB.
WILLIAMS MAKES RETURN Troy Senior Ashlyn Williams made her return to the mound this past weekend for the Trojans, just 13 days after having surgery (non-softball related). The senior came out of the bullpen in three games at the Southern Miss Invitational, with her first outing been the shakiest of the three.
Against Mississippi Valley State University, Williams threw 59 pitches and allowed three runs off of three hits. In her second outing of the weekend, the senior came out of the bullpen and recorded her first save of the season against Evansville - go-ing three runs and not allowing a run or hit; all while striking out eight.
In the weekend finale, Williams came out of the bullpen and went five strong innings against Southern Miss to earn her second win of the season. In that contest, she went five innings, allowing one run off of two hits; while striking out 10 on 73 pitches.
HARRIS OUT OF ACTION Junior Sarah Harris missed all of the ac-tion at the Southern Miss Invitational, due to being out injured. The junior suffered a concussion diving back into third base last Sunday in the Quality Inn Classic.
Harris is being eased back into workouts this week, and made the trip out west although she did not play. The junior has been replaced by senior Kortney Cooper in the starting lineup.
HOLLETT NAMED SUN BELT POW Junior shortstop Nikki Hollett was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week last Monday as she hit .500 in five games, connecting on nine hits in 18 plate appearances. She continues to move up the career home run charts at the school, as she is now third all-time in home runs after connecting for another three this weekend.
Not only did she blast the ball out of the park, but she also connected on three doubles and a triple; all while driving in 10 runs and slugging 1.278 in five games. Hollett recorded multiple hits in three of the five games this weekend, and had hits in all five contests. She also recorded multiple RBI in four of the five contests for the Trojans.
The junior recorded an on-base percent-age of .571; and her best game at the plate came against Bradley as she went 3-for-5, with two RBI, a double and a triple in an 8-7 victory in nine innings.
IMPRESSIVE START FOR GROVE Junior Morgan Grove is turning heads so far this season on the mound, as she was perfect through 14 Troy games.
The junior hurler has seen action 16 of the 31 games this season, including seven starts. Thus far she has recorded a 2.41 earned run average, while recording a 6-2 record. The junior also has the longest stint of any Trojan on the mound this sea-son, going nine innings against Bradley at the Quality Inn Classic.
BIG INNING The Trojans scored eight runs in the third inning of their game with Central Arkan-sas. That is their biggest outburst of the season, as it beats the mark of seven and six, both innings were recorded against Alabama A&M. The Trojans nearly broke their mark against Southern Miss, as they put seven on the board on the road against the Golden Eagles. They nearly got the mark again recently against Cal State Fullerton as they scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning. No to mention, the Trojans scored seven runs in the eighth inning against Drake in a 12-5 victory.

MCALLISTER MOVES TO BULLPEN Junior Jordan McAllister, an established pitcher in high school and junior college, has moved her talents to the bullpen to provide depth while senior Ashlyn Wil-liams heals from her surgery. The elder McAllister has not seen any action on the mound yet this season, but has been seen in the bullpen getting loose during games.
NO ILL EFFECTS FROM MISSING THE FALL Junior Sarah Shields is showing no ill ef-fects from offseason knee surgery, which sidelined her for the fall. The junior is sec-ond on the team in hitting, as she comes in at .357 in 28 games (20 starts). She has pounded out 25 hits in 70 plate appear-ances, with four doubles and 13 RBI. The junior has seen action at second, third and as the designated player.
EXTRA BASE AFFAIR The Trojans have recorded 276 total hits this season and of those hits, 95 have been of the extra base variety. The Trojans have connected for 56 doubles, six triples and 33 home runs - while allowing just 16 home runs on the mound.
MAGIC NUMBER IS FOUR The Trojans have proven that they can close out games when they lead after the fourth inning this season, as they are a perfect 15-2 in those games.
WILLIAMS TABBED PITCHER OF YEAR Troy senior Ashlyn Williams has been tabbed as the Sun Belt Conference Pre-season Pitcher of the Year, as voted on by the coaches this season.
Williams is the school’s all-time leader in wins (74), appearances (139), complete games (84), innings pitched (823.2) and strikeouts (1,017) – a category she was among the nation’s best last season. She is just off the pace in earned run average (1.90 – ninth all-time) and shutouts (17 – tied for first) at the school all-time.
Last season, the senior finished the year with a 21-22 record and a 2.45 earned run average. However, opponents hit just .212 against Williams last season, while she struck out a school record 402 bat-ters – an increase from 312 during her sophomore season.
OMISSION FROM ALL-CONFERENCE Troy junior Nikki Hollett was left off the Preseason All-Sun Belt team this season, just a year after making the team as the utility/designated player. The junior hit .245 last season with six home runs and
23 runs batted in.
BROTHERLY LOVE Sophomore Callie Rawlinson, a native of Auburn and a product of Lee-Scott Acad-emy will have a little family love when she puts on her uniform this season. The sophomore is joined by her brother, Chase Rawlinson who is a student assistant on the coaching staff.
SMARTT-ING Head coach Melanie Davis didn’t have to look too far to find one of her signees this past year. In fact, all she had to do was look across the street to Charles Hender-son High School. Davis signed Taylor Smartt, an infielder at Charles Henderson, who enters her freshman campaign. And if the name sounds familiar, it is, as she is the daughter of Troy assistant baseball coach, Mark Smartt.
NATIONAL TEAM EXPERIENCE Assistant coach Sharon O’Mara got a once in a lifetime opportunity this summer as she was asked to help coach at the World Championships. O’Mara served as the pitching coach for the Venzuelan national team as they hosted the World Championships and rose in the rankings during the tournament.
AUSSIE CONNECTION Assistant coach Sharon O’Mara is not the Australian-native on the Trojans roster this year, as junior Nikki Hollett returns to solidify the middle of the lineup. The duo continues a long line of athletes from Australia who have attended Troy in sports such as men’s basketball, women’s basket-ball and women’s tennis.
FRESHMEN ON THE CORNER? At some point this season, the Trojans could have two freshmen on the corners of the infield as Kelly Luquette is slated to start the season at third base, while fellow freshman Taylor Smartt could make the move from shortstop (this fall) to first base as she is in competition with Hayden Gann at that position.

ULTIMATE COLLEGE SOFTBALL TOP 25POLL #5: MARCH 21, 2011
2011 SUN BELT WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS Player of the Week Pitcher of the Week February 14 Bridges, La.-Lafayette Brignac, La.-Lafayette February 21 Hollett, Troy Hamilton, La.-Lafayette February 28 Fowler, South Alabama Brignac, La.-Lafayette March 7 Orgeron, La.-Lafayette Kirk, North Texas March 14 McClain, FIU Williams, Troy March 21 Bridges, La.-Lafayette Brignac, La.-Lafayette March 28 April 4 April 11 April 18 April 25 May 2 May 9
Player and Pitcher of the Week are nominated by each member instituion’s SID, and then voted on by each of the league’s nine head coaches. The weekly release comes out on Monday.
Entering her 18th season as head coach of the Troy University Softball program Melanie Davis looks to add to her already impressive resume. Her ac-complishments include 600 wins at Troy, 31 wins or more in 16 seasons at Troy, and a winning season in 20 of her years of coaching.
Davis, already a member of the West Alabama Softball Hall of Fame and a member of the Na-tional Fastpitch Association’s 600 win club, is the all-time winningest coach at Troy. Her 674 wins is the most for any coach in Troy’s history in any sport. The record was formerly held by coach Chase Riddle who coached the Troy Baseball team from 1979-1990.
With a desire to excel and a passion for winning, Davis has guided the Trojans to eight seasons of 40 wins or more, including a school-record 52 victories in 1995.
In 1993, Davis brought her winning attitude to the Troy staff as the head volleyball and softball coach. During her tenure as the volleyball coach, Davis led the Trojans to a 70-44 record, with back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1994 and 1995, placing Troy in the Mid-Continent Conference tournament in each of those seasons.
She gave up her volleyball duties in 1995 to focus on softball. She became Troy’s Senior Woman Administrator in 1998, a role she relinquished to former Trojan Softball great Sandy Atkins.
Davis has guided the Trojans to postseason confer-ence tournaments each season since 1999. Her teams never finished lower than second in either the regular season or tournament in seven of their eight seasons in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2006, the Trojans have posted a 171-131 overall record, including a 61-50 mark in conference play. Those five seasons are highlighted by a SBC Tournament Runner-Up finish in 2007 and again last season in 2010.
In addition to winning the A-Sun title in 2005, Davis’ team swept perennial national power Florida State, split a doubleheader with No. 17 Georgia Tech and ended the season ranked No. 27 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/USA Today Coaches
Poll.
The Trojans 2004 season saw the Lady Trojans go 35-30 with a 15-5 record in the Atlantic Sun. Defeats of Penn State and Maryland highlighted the Trojans non-conference schedule. The Trojans had two four-game winning streaks and three three-game winning streaks. Troy also faced No. 3 Florida State, No. 22 Georgia Tech, and No. 23 Auburn during the season but fell short against each.
In 2003 the Trojans went 39-23 and 16-6 in Atlantic Sun play, capping the program’s 10th consecutive season with at least 30 victories. That season also saw the Trojans pick up wins over No. 3 Nebraska and No. 28 Southern Illinois. The victory over Nebraska on March 8 marked the highest ranked team to ever be toppled by the Trojans. The previous high was a win over No. 17 Florida State on April 30, 2001.
Also in the 2003 season, Davis notched her 400th win at Troy. The victory came against Florida A&M on March 18 when the Trojans defeated the Lady Rattlers, 2-1.
In 2002, Troy collected 46 victories, the most since 1999. In the process, the Trojans played 10 teams that advanced to the NCAA Regionals. Troy also recorded an 11-game winning streak to end the month of April, marking the second-longest winning streak in school history.
In 2001, Davis guided Troy to a 38-23 record and a 7-7 record in the A-Sun, which placed the Trojans as the sixth-seed at the A-Sun Championship. After falling in the first round to top-seeded Florida Atlantic, Troy won three consecutive games to ad-vance to the championship round against FAU. The Owls claimed the victory, 1-0, to clinch their fourth straight A-Sun title.
Two years prior, in 1999, Troy finished the season with a 48-23 record and was seeded No. 2 in the tournament. The Trojans again fell to the Owls in the championship game.
In 1996, Troy made its first appearance in the NCAA Regionals, advancing from its Mid-Continent Conference championship and a win over Southeast Missouri at home in the NCAA play-in series. Troy finished the season with a 47-22-1 record.
