The first of these was the unveiling of a Blue Plaque and this was followed later on in the year by the Centenary Service and Dedication of the Knights’ Chapel in St Paul’s Cathedral. The Society’s Blue Plaque The Society was founded on 27th April 1908 at a solicitor’s office at 31 Essex Street just off the Strand. This was subseq- uently destroyed by enemy action in World War II. To mark the Centenary a blue plaque has been placed on the site of the original building at 31 Essex Street. Members of the Council and their guests gathered there on Sunday 27th April 2008 and, after a short speech, the 11th Knight Principal, Sir Robert Balchin, unveiled the Blue Plaque exactly 100 years to the day after the founding of the Society by Sir William Bull MP. The Chapel of the Knights in St Paul’s Cathedral As members will be aware the Society accepted an invitation in 2005 from the then Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral to establish a new Chapel in the Crypt. Since the Chapel was established, Knights Bachelor from all over the world have generously contributed towards the Appeal Fund. Work began on the Chapel early in 2008 and was completed in October. It is situated a few steps away from the tomb of Sir Christopher Wren, architect and Knight Bachelor. The result has been the creation, in English oak, of a beautiful place of worship which is now the spiritual home of Knights Bachelor and an inspiration to all visitors to St Paul’s. The carving, by Houghtons of York, is exceptionally fine. The Chapel and the adjoining seating in St Faith’s Chapel may be used by Knights Bachelor (by arrangement only through the Clerk of the Imperial Society and in accordance with the Cathedral’s programme) for family Weddings, Baptisms and Memorial Services. The Chapel of the Knights contains the stalls of the Officers and the Registers of Knights Bachelor, listing their names since 1257. Also displayed, on loan from Wilkinson Sword Ltd, is Queen Victoria’s sword with which she gave the accolade to many famous men.
