Show News

Monday, July 8th is our last Club Meeting prior to the Club Show, so please try to attend. There will be

yard signs available to help promote the show, so if you live in an area that sees much traffic, please plan to put

one in your yard if possible. If you are unable to attend that meeting, but you are able and willing to put a sign

in your yard, please contact Steve Ridgeway at 918-557-1107 to arrange to get one. Also, for those who have

not yet signed up to help work the show, you may sign up at the meeting, or, you may contact Donna Loffer at

918-407-1194 to get signed up. It is very important that everybody pitches in to help make this year's show our

best yet!

Thursday, July 11th at 6 PM we will need volunteers with strong backs to help load the club truck at the

Allande's, at 8523 E 5th Place in Tulsa. This usually takes about an hour if we have enough help.

Friday, July 12th, beginning at 9 AM, we will need help at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Exchange Center setting up

for the show. This is a big process! So please consider pitching in if you can. For those who are putting in

displays or participating in working exhibits, you may begin your setup at noon. Dealer setup also begins at

noon.

Saturday, July 13th at 9 AM, the club Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show begins at the Tulsa Fairgrounds

Exchange Center. The show runs through 6 PM that day. Again, we will need all the volunteers we can get.

Coffee and donuts will be available in the hospitality room in the Southeast corner of the Exchange Center.

Sunday, July 14th at 10 AM, the Show continues and lasts through 5 PM. Beginning at 5 PM, we will once

again need a lot of help packing up after the show and then unloading the truck at the Allande's place. Coffee

and Donuts will be available in the hospitality room. Also, at 9 AM Sunday there will be a meeting of the

Rolling Rock Club in the hospitality room prior to the show, as well as a small auction to benefit the Rolling

Rock Club Scholarship Fund. That meeting and auction is open to any TRMS members.

If you have any questions regarding anything relating to the show, Club members should call Eric Hamshar at

918-284-3503 or at the Correll Museum at 918-266-3612.

PEBBLE PUPS

At our June meeting the Pebble Pups learned about our state fossil, Saurophaganax Maximus. We

also discussed other fossils that are found in our part of the world, and inspected the samples of what

we might find on the June field trip. We then made dinosaur tracks in clay with toy dinos. We then

talked about petrified wood and organic fossils like amber. To wrap up we enjoyed some tasty orange

amber with bugs trapped inside.

*We are all missing Miss Julia and hope she is able to rejoin us soon!!

5 YEARS AGO JULY, 2014; Comments on the July Show- Richard Jaeger, TRMS, AFMS

President: Our show was excellent. I believe the number of competitive exhibits was the 2nd highest since 2003. Certainly though the attendance at the various meetings and banquet meals was quite excellent, the numbers for the All-Officers Luncheon and the

Breakfast with the Editors and Webmasters were the highest in many years. The numbers for the Cracker Barrel and Awards Banquet were well above average. Robert Livingston, AFMS Show Consultant, wrote to Liz Thomas. Liz, you did a super fine job handling our show and convention for us in AFMS. Every detail seems to be nailed down well. I was so happy to see you receive the special

award. Over the past 25 years I have been to several AFMS conventions all over. Your show ranks right up there with my all-time favorite three: Moab, UT, Billings, MT, Riverside, CA and now Tulsa. Don’t know why but it seems Rocky Mountain Federation knows how to do it better. (I did not include my own 2011 in Syracuse, NY, because I did not want to “guild the lilly” as they say). Anyway thanks to you and Ben and all of you who put on a mighty fine event and I know all others agree. The Tulsa club definitely wins my top accolades for enthusiastic members who seemed to knock themselves out in every area covered. My home Syracuse club has trouble getting enough workers. You had

plenty. And the 16 or so demonstrators - I have only seen that many maybe one other time in all my years,

Incredible. Gold stars for the Tulsa club for sure. Rockhounds are the greatest folks... 15 YEARS AGO JULY, 2004:.Thirty-Two members and 3 visitors present. Winning door prizes were new member, Edward, Bob Shaha, Richard Spees, Juanita Dewey, Noah Maddox and Anne Cooper. Bob Shaha led the meeting due to Richard Jaeger was out of town. Bob announced Doris Moore had died and her son has donated the Moore’s collection and equipment to TRMS. Bob announced Gemfaire had donated $1000 for our scholarship fund. John Ravenscroft reported By-Law changes would be voted on at the August meeting. Ken Siler led the field trip to the

Grand Lake area. The library case featured calcite from Mary Watts’ Collection. The program was a video about geology and origins of the Arkansas River.

(History continued) 25 YEARS AGO JULY, 1994: Forty-three members and 3 guests counted off for door prizes. Dixie Lee Alf presented the AFMS trophy to Pat and Larry Gregory for first Place in the New Editor Division of the AFMS bulletin competition. Verne Groves received 2nd place award in the AFMS “How to do it” Program Competition in the show in Houston. Verne Groves gave an interesting program on rocks & Minerals of Arizona. July field trip was canceled due to not

finding a suitable place for the workshop. Leon Reeder wrote an article titled “Basic Lapidary - How to Cut a Cabochon - Part 7" 45 YEARS AGO JULY, 1974: There were 93 members and guests present. Don Swisher called one young visitor, Britt Fort, to draw numbers for the door prizes. Door prizes were donated by Meeks Rock Shop and Don Swisher donated an amethyst he had just finished faceting. Richard Jaeger, Program Director introduced Rogers Moore who presented a slide program on his trip to Europe. The field trip was to Chandler Park for the Annual TRMS Rock Swap

and Picnic.

The Conglomerate

News from the Chatpile

By Wayne Mouser, [email protected]

Bob and Nancy Hicks rode the zip line on the club field trip to Van Buren. At almost 89, Bob was the oldest by a month and two years, to ride the zip line.

Steve and Sharon Richards went to northwest Georgia in early May to go to the William Holland Lapidary School (now called William Holland Retreat, I think) for a week. Drove to Dickson, TN on a rainy Saturday and spent the first night. Traveled on into Young Harris, GA on Sunday, arriving around 4:00 pm. Checked-in, had dinner at 5:00 and

started classes at 6:00. Steve took Faceting II from 9am until 9pm each day and Sharon took Gem Identification 9am until 5pm with just breaks for lunch and dinner from Monday until Friday noon. It was like going to Adult Summer Camp with the dorm-type rooms and cafeteria style meals. Each sleeping room has private baths and beds that are adequate. Beautiful area and they really enjoyed the experience. From March until November instructors from around

the country volunteer their time to teach in a huge variety of classes each week. They teach everything from cabs to photography, from basket weaving to silversmithing. If you want any details, contact them! On the way home, they stopped in Franklin, NC and looked around at the multi-venue show that they had going on. Heading north to I-40 they drove the “Tail of the Dragon” on Highway 129 with its 314 turns in 11 miles (this was not by decision but just trying to find a shortcut to I-40). Beautiful, but harrowing drive – motorcyclists love this road!

Those who attended the Rock-Hound Luncheon June 25 was: Ben & Liz Thomas, Roberta Wagle, Steve & Donna & Nate Loffer, Mark Petersen, Chester & Elaine Lee, Jim & Ruth Williams, Martha Becker, Richard Jaeger, Roxanna Chamberlin and granddaughters Kaylane & Trinity, Leon Reeder, Wayne Mouser, Steve Robinson, Julia Cross.

Today, June 25, Chester & Elaine Lee celebrated their 59th anniversary.

June 10th, Julia Allande’s Mother passed away after a long illness. Condolences to Julia and her family.

July meeting program Presentation: Lecture Title: How Exotic Gems are Changing the Jewelry Industry Description Gems that were once only bought by collectors have become increasingly popular in jewelry stores and

designer boutiques. New finds have made these non-traditional gems more available, and retailers are using the stones to set themselves apart from their competition by creating unusual items to wear and give as gifts. This increasing interest in exotic gems prompted author Renée Newman to write five books on them – Exotic Gems: Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 and Rare Gemstones.

Her presentation will help you evaluate the quality of unusual gem materials and show you how they can

be used to create distinctive jewelry. The session will include photo examples and information on:

● Unique jewelry designs with non-traditional gems ● Value factors that can be more important than color ● Care tips and appropriate setting styles for fragile gems ● Pricing, including the highest-priced non-traditional gems

● Geographic sources The main stones that will be discussed are apatite, fluorite, kyanite, rhodochrosite and tanzanite. However,

other colored stones will be illustrated and mentioned briefly.

Speaker Bio

Our speaker, Renée Newman, GG, learned to appreciate fine gemstones when she directed tours to Asia and South America in the early 1980's. Her passengers wanted details on how to evaluate the quality of the gems they were exposed to, so she signed up for the GIA Colored Stone Grading Course. She was so impressed with it that she decided to take the other courses required for gemologists.

After obtaining her gemological diploma, she was hired as a gemologist at a wholesale firm in downtown Los Angeles. Armed with trade experience and gemological credentials, Newman decided to create books that showed readers how to visually evaluate the quality of gems. Her first book, the Diamond Ring Buying Guide, was published in 1989. Since that time, she has written twelve more books on gems and jewelry. Information about the books and reviews of them are available on her website www.reneenewman.com/books.htm.

Newman’s books are used worldwide as buying guides, sales-training tools, gemology course texts and references for jewelers, dealers and appraisers. If you would like autographed copies of Renée’s books, bring cash or a check. Her books will be available for sale before and after the meeting for a discounted price of $15 each including sales tax.

Additional information about Renée and her books is available at www.reneenewman.com.

Field Trip News! The June field trip was a hit. We had a great turnout, about 20 including several of our Pebble Pups! We

drove north to Peru, KS and found lots of fossils. We found snails, horn coral, crinoid stems, brachiopods, and

others. After lunch in Sedan, KS we headed back out to scout a new location. We found a road side cave

with an underwater entrance, then headed back out to the highway where we found large pieces of horn

coral imbedded in Limestone. I think everyone had a great time, I know I did!

We will not be having a field trip in July due to everyone being busy getting ready for the show. In August,

I’m looking into a trip to the Ada area to look for Boley Agate.

As always, feel free to share sites with me that you would like to see on our trip list!

Minutes of TRMS Board Meeting June 4, 2019

President Steve Ridgeway called the meeting to order at 7:01 pm at College Hill Presbyterian Church. Board members present: Donna Loffer, Jerry Nagel, Peter Grice, Holly Proctor, and Sharon Richards. Guest present: Wayne Mouser, member. Motion to approve the minutes of the May Board meeting as published in the June newsletter was made by Donna

Loffer, seconded by Sharon Richards. Motion passed. Motion to approve the Treasurer’s report as published in the June newsletter was made by Peter Grice, seconded by Holly Proctor. Motion passed. Wayne Mouser noted that he had an error in the Conglomerate article that he submitted for the June issue of the newsletter. In the paragraph about the Wichita show, he mistakenly typed “hamburger” eggs instead of “rattlesnake”

eggs. The Board members present admitted that they had not noticed the error. Reports: Past President Donna Loffer noted that since we now have a new Spinning Wheel that is much easier to transport to our events, she recommends that we see if there is another club who could use our older one. Long-time member Lilik Hakola’s husband made the older one and it has served the club well for many years. After some discussion the

Board decided to try to contact Lilik (who has moved to Tuscan, AZ) to let her know we would like to donate this unit to the Ponca City club which has recently began to hold shows again. 1st Vice-President Peter Grice noted that he has been asked to speak to a metal-detecting club at their meeting in July. He noted that he has programs scheduled for the remainder of the year. On July 8, he has author Renee Newman speaking. She will have some of her books available for purchase at the meeting.

2nd Vice-President Holly Proctor made a trip to Peru, KS to check the area for our June field trip. She reports that it was an easy trip with lots of shells and shark’s teeth. We will not have a field trip in July due to our show; she hopes the Arkansas River will be down so that we can do some searching along the banks in August.

Holly has done our newsletters for the past two months and will be able to do the July issue. The Board gratefully appointed Rebecca Ridgway to fill the vacancy of Editor beginning with the August issue. The vote was unanimous.

Old Business: President Steve Ridgway stated that he had several members visit with him at the recent Bead and Gem Show concerning the upcoming proposed By-laws changes. Since we could have several new members and/or guests at the meeting on June 10, he would like to invite anyone, who has concerns or questions concerning the changes, to come to the July Board meeting to discuss and postpone discussion and the vote during the June general meeting. The Board agreed.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 pm. Respectfully submitted by: Sharon Richards, acting secretary

Minutes of Membership Meeting March 11, 2019 President Steve Ridgway opened the meeting at 7 p.m.
