ELECTRICITY DEMAND IN the GCC is growing, and rapidly - Saudi-based bank Apircorp estimates 8.7 per cent annually - and it isnot going to stop anytime soon. Even estimates on how muchinvestment the power sector will gulp in the years ahead - in newgenerating stock, transmission and distribution systems - varywildly, though again it is not going to come cheap. In its energyguidebook for GCC industries this year, the Doha-based GulfOrganisation for Industrial Consulting (GOIC) highlighted thepressures facing the system, and those that will be called upon tofinance any future expansion. It said GCC states are looking toinvest more than US$300 billion in just 20 big new energyprojects alone that that will generate eight gigawatts (GW) ofadditional electricity by 2020. It expects current power demandto triple over the next 25 years, from approximately 60,000megawatts (MW). However, regional governments will soon haveto face up to the issue of subsidy reform, the effects of whichcontinue to constrain economic development. At Technical Review we always welcome readers comments to [email protected]

THE MENA REGION is increasingly showing a preference foruse of solar energy, photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermalpower plants, a recent study has concluded. The regionalmarket for photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal powerplants is expected to reach 3.5 GW by 2015, it said. The study conducted by GTM Research, Boston, USA andpublished in Plastemart web portal revealed that whileSaudi Arabia and Turkey were tipped to be the largestinvestors in PV and solar thermal installations, Egypt andMorocco were also starting to think differently with a moveaway from fossil fuels and towards solar energy. SaudiArabia, in particular, was planning to move away from
generating electricity using crude oil in favour ofphotovoltaics and solar thermal technologies. The study has attributed this development to high solarirradiation and rising electricity prices and requirementsarising from an increasing population. By 2017, the expansion of solar energy will be expected toexceed a combined output of 10GW in the MENA region. Witha share of 70 per cent, the majority will set to beimplemented in Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The sun also ranked among the most valuable resources inthe North African countries, according to the study. Egypt benefitted from crude oil exports in the 1990s,however, current reductions in yields produced by oil fieldsand increasing energy subsidies were forcing the Egyptiangovernment to take action. In the financial year from 2012 to 2013, subsidies reportedlyaccounted for a quarter of the entire Egyptian state budget. As the largest energy resource in the country, the sun offersan ideal alternative to dwindling oil and gas. Every year, each square meter in Egypt receives more than 2,200kWhours of solar energy. The Egyptian Solar Energy Development Association (SEDA)in Cairo has also noted potential application areas for solarenergy in the form of solar installations for producingdrinking water and intelligent lighting concepts for hotels. In Morocco, solar plants with a combined output of twogigawatt were set to be installed by 2020, which meant thatthe share of renewable energy in the Moroccan power gridcould reach a total of 42 per cent. Alongside solar energy, wind energy and hydropower arealso expected to form part of this share.
PHOENIX SOLAR HAS started work on buildinga 1.8MWp plant in Riyadh as part of a deal withSaudi Arabian energy group Saudi Aramco
Aramco has plans to expand its 3.5MWp(megawatt peak) King Abdullah PetroleumStudies and Research Center (KAPSARC)project to 5.3MWp, with Germany’s PhoenixSolar, which will design and construct the newphotovoltaic plant.
In January, Phoenix Solar had completed theinstallation of the 3.5MW park, located on thegrounds of the KAPSARC in Riyadh. It will bethe fifth project for the German firm in SaudiArabia and the second for Saudi Aramco.
The group’s Phoenix Solar Oman andPhoenix Solar Singapore divisions, along withlocal partner Hi-Technology & ContractingCompany, will oversee the design, construction and commissioning of the new1.8MWp extension. Upon completion, theplant will cover some 2.6 hectares of desertland and feed more than 2,900MW hours ayear directly into KAPSARC’s medium voltagegrid.
Phoenix Solar vice president of projects andhead of Middle East Klaus Friedl said that the
group’s subsidiaries in the US and Singaporehave been growing, and added that PhoenixSolar in Oman has also been increasingactivities in the Gulf Cooperation Councilregion, mainly in Saudi Arabia. Phoenix SolarCEO Bernd Köhler said, “The Middle East is afast growing region, with potentially highdemand for solar energy in the future.
“With this new order in hand, we willstrengthen the Oman office, which willoperate with the support of Phoenix SolarSingapore.”
By 2017, the expansion of solar energy will be expected to exceed a combined outputof 10GW in the MENA region

ABB HAS WON an order worth around US$30mn from Zagros Energy to build four new transmissionand distribution substations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
The Swiss power systems manufacturer has said that demand for reliable power was growing at arate of 10 per cent to 25 per cent a year in the region due to industrial growth, construction projectsand overall economic development.
The Kurdistan Region of Iraq power grid supplies around 2,750MW of electricity, with more than 90per cent of the capacity owned and operated by independent power companies.
ABB said that the increasing demand for electricity will mean that outages and blackouts willbecome frequent. ABB’s project scope will include the design and supply of the substations and will
enable an additional 600MW of power tothe region. The substations will be basedon GIS technology that has been selectedfor its compact footprint, since they wereto be located in the center of the city.
Two will be connected with 132kVunderground cables due to the lack ofspace for overhead lines. Circuitbreakers and air-insulated switchgear, control and protection systems, capacitor banks as well as powertransformers and other high-voltageequipment, will form part of the keyproduct supplies. The project has beenscheduled for completion in 2014.

CHINESE FIRM SEPCO III has signed a dealto build a 318MW coal-fired power plant inthe North African country of Morocco Moroccan state power utility ONEE said thatSepco III won the tender launched by ONEElast year to build the second coal-firedpower plant in the city of Jerada near theAlgerian border, where protests eruptfrequently over unemployment since theclosure of coal mines there in 2001.The construction will be financed by ChineseExim Bank and the plant will start operatingby the end of 2016. The project will beexpected to create employment on the area.A 165MW plant was built there in 1971 to
burn up anthracite, a hard, high carbon-content coal from the mines.Although Morocco imports most of its coal,ONEE has signed a deal to buy 1,320MW or
25 per cent of the national requirement froma planned huge coal-fired power plant onthe Atlantic coast near the city of Safi, undera contract won in 2010 by GDF Suez and theroyal holding company Nareva.Mines and energy minister Fouad Douiri toldReuters that the plant was expected to startoperating by the start of 2017 although biddershave been struggling to raise the fundsrequired and construction may be delayed.Morocco has a huge deficit in energyproduction as annual consumption isgrowing by around 10 per cent and it has tospend heavily to subsidise power due tohigh production costs.

PRECISELY HOW MUCH the Gulfregion is growing, and quite howmuch energy it will require tosustain this momentum going
forward, is the subject of immensespeculation among power industryexperts.
One thing is for sure: electricity demandin the GCC is growing, and rapidly - Saudi-based bank Apircorp estimates 8.7 percent annually - and it is not going to stopanytime soon.
Even estimates on how muchinvestment the power sector will gulp inthe years ahead - in new generating stock,
transmission and distribution systems -vary wildly, though again it is not going tocome cheap.
In its energy guidebook for GCCindustries this year, the Doha-based GulfOrganisation for Industrial Consulting(GOIC) highlighted the pressures facingthe system, and those that will be calledupon to finance any future expansion.
It said GCC states are looking to investmore than US$300bn in just 20 big newenergy projects alone that that willgenerate eight gigawatts (GW) ofadditional electricity by 2020.
It expects current power demand to
triple over the next 25 years, fromapproximately 60,000 megawatts (MW).
That’s broadly concurred by Apicorp, which forecasts 65.9 GW of new capacityadditions in the 2014-2018 periodthroughout the GCC.
This new build project, in part, is beingstimulated by a huge increase in theregion’s population.
By 2020, the GCC’s population isforecast to reach 53.5mn, withaccompanying expectations for greatersocial provision, and that includes energy.
Diverse supplyIt means besides building more powerstations, the Gulf’s planning authoritiesneed to think smart, and take urgentaction in areas such as energy efficiencyand other demand side measures.
All of these options are now under studyas the major Gulf economies seek to shoreup their power systems to meet currentand projected demand.

The emergence of Iraq is expected toput further pressure on resources, fromavailable investment funds, right throughto contractor services.
Baghdad is actively modernising its owninfrastructure as it rebuilds its fracturedeconomy on the back of the nation’s oilsector.
While traditional energy resources likeoil and gas will continue to provide thebackbone of the Gulf’s power supply, most expect to see more alternativesolutions arriving on the supply side, fromnuclear power to renewables.
Most of the big GCC economies havenow activated a civil nuclear powerprogramme as a means of providing large-scale new capacity in the years ahead, though these will not materialise until theend of the decade at the earliest.
As well as the rich Gulf states - and themore controversial work underway in Iran -Jordan is also pioneering in the area ofnuclear research.
Solar stalledThen there is the GCC’s broadcommitment to renewable energy, notablysolar power, and the advance ofinnovative energy efficiency technologies.
As the global headquarters for theInternational Renewable Energy Authority
(IRENA), Abu Dhabi is tasked with drivingforward research into these areas.
It has already taken a lead role in thisregard but expect more to come.
Elsewhere in the emirates, Dubai’s firstlarge-scale solar power plant, a 13 MWfacility, is expected to open later this year.
It is sited in the first phase of theMohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum solarpark, which aims to generate around1,000 MW of electricity to power 200,000homes by 2030.
But there is still a long way to go, ofcourse.
Saudi Arabia, for instance, plans toinstall 41,000 MW of solar power over thenext 20 years, but to date has built just 12MW; by comparison, China built 5,000MW in 2012 alone.
Nonetheless, the ambition is there, andthe trend is expected to pick up.
After years of stalling on solar, Saudiofficials now appear to be moving morequickly to capitalise on the general slumpin industry costs and the high oil price.
Contracts for a first round of 500-800MW of solar power are expected to bereleased before the end of 2013, with atarget of more than 5,000 MW to beinstalled within the next five years.
And Saudi Arabia is not alone with otherGulf states also keen to plug into solarenergy, a natural solution given theabundant sunshine, but provided theeconomics stack up.
Gas shortagesAll of these steps will no doubt alleviatepressure on the region’s conventionalhydrocarbon deposits.
In Saudi Arabia, large oil guzzlingpower plants are now eating away at thenation’s crude exports; the kingdom isreported to be the fifth biggest oilconsumer in the world.
Much of this oil consumption is used forpower generation to supply electricity tothe fast-growing population, wherenumbers have doubled in just 30 years.
And then there is the much-reported gasshortages that have plagued much of theregion, with the exception of Qatar, which hasled the world in liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Despite holding large quantities ofnatural gas deposits of their own, othercountries such as Kuwait and the UAE areall now importing LNG from overseas; Abu

Dhabi is also purchasing Qatari gas viathe Dolphin pipeline.
Saudi Arabia too is struggling to meetits domestic gas needs and is investingheavily in new capacity to meet demand;the use of oil for power generation istestimony to the absence of sufficient gasavailability.
But there are competing uses for newgas supplies too, with the kingdom’s fast-growing downstream industries hungry tosecure more volumes.
The ongoing gas subsidy to these andother users is further diverting supplyaway from the power sector.
New build plantIt means with demand on the up acrossthe GCC, investment in new conventionalpower infrastructure is soaring.
While the potential for solar power andother renewable energy sources looks setonly to grow in the years to come, for themost part, this means rolling out more andmore thermal generating stock.
Saudi Arabia has activated animpressive independent powerprogramme that has drawn keen investorsto the table, and brought in additional
capital flow and know-how.Major international companies are now
pairing up with the state-owned SaudiElectricity Company (SEC) to construct thenext wave of generating plants.
At the same time, there is massiveassociated spending in related areas, including transmission anddistribution systems.

One area that has onlybeen lightly explored isthe interconnection of
the Gulf states.
www.technicalreview.me
S03 TRME Power 2013 Analysis_Layout 1 14/08/2013 17:02 Page 15
And it is providing rich pickings for thehordes of international contractors activein this area.
In one recent project, ABB wonorders worth US$120mn from SEC tosupply transformers, as it bolsters thenational grid.
It is just one of a flood of large-scaleenergy infrastructure projects in thekingdom, the region’s biggest spender, though only mirrors a trend unfoldingelsewhere in the region.
Again, there is also the emergingopportunity in Iraq, which is likewisebeginning to spend heavily on new powergeneration and associated facilities.
GCC interconnectorOne area that has only been lightlyexplored is the interconnection of theGulf states.
Still, the GCC Interconnection Authority(GCCIA) has made great headway ininterlinking the region in recent years, although actual electricity trade remainsin its infancy.
At the GCCIA’s second regional powertrade forum in Dubai this year, gridofficials commented that the four-year-oldGCC network, which began operations inmid-2009, had achieved its primaryobjective of increasing cross-borderelectricity supply.
Admittedly, while power sharing may besmall scale for now, the network has hadto overcome huge political challenges tomake it this far.
The consolidated network has helpedshare electricity reserves among the GCCstates, and now acts as a catalyst toexchange energy during emergencies inany Gulf country.
In theory, any country in need ofelectricity can be supported by other
states via the interconnection, thatspans Kuwait in the north, to Oman inthe south.
Potentially, there may be scope forexporting power or trading with otherregions, including the European Union, although the infrastructure is not yet inplace, and clearly there are other morepressing priorities.
The challenges remain great, however, from creating a clear market for tradingutilities to operate, to speeding upelectricity trading and exchange.
According to GCCIA chief executiveAdnan Bin Ibrahim al-Muhaisin, creatingthe right market to share the GCC’senergy will not only drive power trading,it will also reduce the gas and fuelrequired to generate the massive newadditional electricity expected.
He said the Gulf’s nascent powermarket will help in lowering productionand operating costs overall, boostingcompetitiveness and lowering coststhrough consolidation and sharedvolumes.
But first the agency will need toconvince individual utilities across theGulf, which are not only used tooperating and planning alone, but maynot be operating on any regularcommercial basis.
This is a big sticking point when there issuch a heavy dependency on subsidisedfuel across the region that distorts the truecost of electricity.
And the gap between the cost ofelectricity and its final price looms largeover the region.
In 1966, for instance, Kuwait droppedits electricity tariff from 27 fils per kWh to 2fils and it has remained the same eversince; that is about US$0.01.
Compare this cost to the UK, where
electricity costs about US$0.19 per kWh.It’s a huge work in progress. At the moment, the regulatory
framework is different in each memberstate and typically does not addresscross-border trade at all.
Political implicationsWhat is certain is that the region musttake action to address the anticipatedhuge demand ahead, and this action islikely to come in a number of forms.
Though power investment has laggedacross the region since the 1997 globalfinancial meltdown, Apicorp sees thingscatching up, though the recovery is farfrom there yet.
Ali Aissaoui, a senior consultant atApicorp, said in a recent bulletin that thatany shortfall in electricity supply couldinhibit economic growth and, at a time ofheightened social unrest, serve toexacerbate frustrations.
It means dealing with the power crunchis likely to be high up on the peckingorder for all governments, thoughespecially in more densely populatedstates such as Saudi Arabia.
There are so many balls to juggle, fromthe production of gas and the futuresustainability of any reserves, through tosimply switching to low energy lightbulbs.
At the root of the problem, though aretough, political choices, including how totackle the issue of subsidies, which serveonly to undermine the advance of a morecommercial power industry.
At a time when social anxieties areriding high this is not an easy task byany means.
But whether Gulf leaders like it or not,the problem is real and it’s there, and it’snot going to go away. ■

THE PROJECT WAS delivered on time and within budget byFGW Jenerator, an official FG Wilson dealer in Turkey.Milas-Bodrum is one of the busiest airports of the AegeanRegion, serving Milas, a residential area with prominent
cultural heritage, and the popular holiday destination of Bodrum. The terminal accommodates more than five million passengersfrom 40 different locations annually, meaning FG Wilson is helpingto support the journeys of almost 14,000 people every day.
The airport’s new international terminal, which is 425m longwith an indoor area of over 95,000 sqm, has been provided with acritical standby power system by FGW Jenerator. The five highvoltage generator sets provide backup support for the entire newterminal, including nine passenger boarding bridges, restaurants, retail stores, check-in desks, passenger baggagefacilities, information desks, banks and a post office, as well asalmost 30,000 sq m of bus and car parking space.
Securing the order against strong competition, the project sawFGW Jenerator make important contributions to the design andspecification planning from the outset, as well as liaising closelywith other key project partners. FGW Jenerator’s power solutionsteam completed the installation and commissioning phase inMay 2012, overcoming a series of significant engineeringchallenges in the process.
Any loss of power at the airport can cause major issues, so it isessential that all critical loads are re-supplied as quickly aspossible. In order to achieve this, FGW Jenerator installed five FGWilson high voltage P1825 generator sets with the ability todeliver power to the airport distribution network at 6.3 kV.
Due to the critical nature of the application, the managementand control of the entire standby power system was implementedusing a redundant PLC (programmable logic controller) inconjunction with a user-friendly touch-screen SCADA HMI system.
The primary duty of the PLC system is to ensure the airport istransferred to standby power as quickly as possible on mainsfailure and on mains return, the load demand of the airport issmoothly and seamlessly transferred to the normal mains supplies.
The generator sets and mains synchronizing capability wereimplemented using Woodward easYgen 3500 controllers, ensuringthat the five generator sets were synchronized and available totake load within 25 seconds of any mains power failure. FGWJenerator packaged both the PLC system and the five easYgencontrollers in an integrated floor standing control panel suite.
To underline the critical nature of this project, each generatorset was supplied with two methods of engine starting, air andbattery, a capability which delivered increased redundancy andensured the generator sets could always start and be available tosupply the critical airport loads.
To meet the strict noise conditions on site, the cooling systemfor each generator set was implemented using a combination of aset-mounted heat exchanger and low noise multi-electrical fanremote radiator. Another key element in enabling the noiseconditions to be met was the installation in the plantroom ofcritical exhaust silencers on each engine.
The generator sets are located in a purpose-built generatorroom on the outskirts of the airport, with remote radiatorsseparating the air start and fuel supply systems. The control, power and synchronization systems are situated in a facility nextto the generator room.
The new terminal of the airport is now fully operational. MAN DIESEL & Turbo hasannounced the release of theG95ME-C9.2 and S90ME-C10.2 engines.
According to the company, the drawing delivery timesfor the S90ME-C10.2 andG95ME-C9.2 are, respectively, two to fourmonths and nine to 11months after placing anorder, facilitating theconsideration of the enginesfor projects currently inplanning stages.
As can be seen in Figure 1,different alternatives fordifferent layouts – in respectto design speed – can beachieved by the two enginetypes.
The S90ME-C9.2 can bemade available from 72 to 84rates per minute (rpm), thatis, the layout diagram of theS90ME-C9.2 can beextended from the current L3
and L4 speed of 76 rpmdown to 72 rpm if so requiredfor projects. The extension ofthe layout diagram requiresno change to the S90ME-C9.2 basic engine design.
The S90ME-C10.2 issimilar to the S90ME-C9.2 inthat all outline dimensions
are identical, includingfootprints. Any designdifferences are related to theincrease in the meaneffective pressure, leadingto modifications of thecrankshaft journal bearingdesign and web thickness, and including an adaptive
modification to theconnecting rod. Minordifferences in the size andnumber of, for instance, turbochargers and hydraulicpumps for the hydraulicpower supply (HPS) follownormal power/rpm outputrules.

IN AN AMBITIOUS renewableenergy initiative that canpotentially help address thegrowing demand for electricity in
Lebanon, the country is rolling out thefirst of its kind landfill gas-to-energy(LFGTE) project in Naameh, near Beirut, using GE’s ecomagination qualifiedJenbacher gas engine technology. Theon-site power project will be powered byone of GE’s Jenbacher J312 landfill gasengines and potentially generate 637kilowatts of renewable electricity. Thisproject also will eliminate theequivalent of about 12,400 tons ofcarbon dioxide (CO2) - the amount ofemissions produced by about 6,100cars per year.
Operated by averda international, the project is considered to be a pilotproject and could be expanded toutilize the Naameh facility’s fullcapacity. Naameh is the biggestsanitary controlled landfill inLebanon, serving the Greater Beirutand Mount Lebanon area since it wasestablished in 1997. The new LFGTEproject is a significant initiative inwhich the waste is converted to usefulenergy, highlighting a new long-termenergy development model thatpotentially can be emulated in otherparts of the country.
Landfill gas typically comprisesapproximately 55 per cent methane and45 per cent CO2 greenhouse gases thatcontribute to degradation of theenvironment. GE’s Jenbacher gasengines utilize captured methane gas asa fuel to produce electricity and havewidespread applications in the region.
The collaboration of GE and averda inthe landmark Naameh projectunderlines the two companies’commitment to the country throughgreener energy initiatives that supportLebanon’s long-term growth. The LFGTEproject is set to begin operating duringQ4 of 2013. By using the landfill gas inthe Jenbacher gas engine to produceelectricity instead of flaring the gas intothe atmosphere, the project will reducethe landfill’s emissions and contributeto the country’s environmentalsustainability. ■

THIS APRIL’S EDITION of ‘MITTechnology Review’ lists the high-power circuit breaker (specificallydesigned for incorporation in HVDC
supergrids) as one of this year’s exclusiveseries of ‘breakthrough technologies’.
These transmission-line devices fromSwitzerland’s leading power- andautomation-technology conglomerate ABB’sown research laboratories could make large-scale DC (direct current) distribution reallypracticable at last, allowing the economicmovement of power efficiently over literallythousands of kilometres – including underthe sea. And outperforming the conventionalalternating-current lines that have beenmostly employed to date in the process. Theycould also improve grid reliability generally,as well as enhancing the capability of existingAC networks.
The new high-tech switches can deal safelyand reliably with literally thousands of ampsand several 100,000 volts potential. And theybring with them very low transfer lossescompared with a standard semiconductor-based breaker, too.
With over 70 installed schemes totallingmore than 60,000MW now installed on orunder the ground (and sea) this singlecompany now accounts for one-half of theworld’s installed HVDC power transmissionbase. These include a brand-new 2090kmpoint-to-point line rated at a massive7200MW, connecting remote SichuanProvince with China’s coast. Incorporatingmuch ABB technology, this key line is rightnow being engineered between Jinping andSunan in the People’s Republic.
For over a century AC transmissiontechnology has dominated large-scale powersupply because the HVDC alternative onlypermitted single point-point distribution, as inthe case of the long-established 1700km-
long, hydro-fed Inga-Kolwezi (formerly Shaba)line in the remote DR Congo.
ABB has solved the main technologicalhurdle by coming up with a design for a robustand hybrid HVDC circuit breaker that can beused to disconnect any malfunctioning part ofan integrated grid temporarily, allowing therest of the network to perform as normal.
With such a device in place, the US-published ‘Review’ says, updated HVDCtechnology can exploit its natural advantageas a more efficient connector of markets withdistant sources of power, notably majorrenewable stations such as the brand-newShams-I CSP facility in the UAE. The world’slargest (100MW) concentrating solar powerfacility was switched into the Emirates’sophisticated network (and the growing Gulfgrid) earlier this year.
This huge advantage is claimed becausevariations in renewable supply such as windspeed and direction change – and cloudyskies and/or sunset of course - can beaccommodated without disrupting the flowoverall, as long as other sources of power arethere to fill the gap.
The result could be a step-change increasein the reliability of renewable energy aroundthe world, widely seen as the key to security ofpower supplies over the next 50 or more yearsbecause this will allow much more effectivecompetition with traditional fossil fuels.
ABB has not been alone in pursuing thisglittering but elusive goal; rival Alstom Grid onits own website lists the advantages of HVDCas being, amongst others, rapid fullcontrollability, asynchronous adaptation ofline conditions, non-transferability of faults, and better economics over transmissiondistances in excess of 700km.
Various other companies and institutions, including Siemens (Germany) and the USA’snot-for-profit EPRI/Electric Power ResearchInstitute in Palo Alto (CA) all have a stake inunlocking this potentially highly lucrativetechnology.
‘Another milestone in electricalengineering” was reasonably claimed by theEuropean concern on 7 November last. “ABBhas successfully designed and developed ahybrid DC breaker after years of research, functional testing and simulation in the R&Dlaboratories.’
It pointed out that the hybrid device
combines mechanical and power-electronicsswitching that enables the interruption ofpower flows equivalent to the output of acomplete nuclear station within a staggeringfive milliseconds.
‘But it’s not just about speed,’ the companysays. ‘The challenge was to do it ultra-fastwith minimal operational losses, and this hasbeen achieved by combining advanced ultra-fast mechanical actuators with our in-housesemiconductor IGBT* valve technologies orpower electronics.”The result is claimed as a ‘game-changer’ interms of forthcoming large-scale powersupply terms, because it removes asignificant and decades-old stumbling blockin the development of new HVDCtransmission grids. It will enable efficientinterconnection and load balancing betweenwhat ABB calls the ‘new HVDC super-highways’, integrating renewable sources andtransporting bulk power across longdistances with minimal losses. Total powerlosses of just three per cent over 1,000kmhave been previously claimed for thistechnology, long before the new hybrid devicewas successfully developed.
‘DC grids will enable sharing of resourceslike lines and converter stations that providesreliability and redundancy in a power networkin an economically-viable manner withminimal losses.
‘ABB’s new hybrid HVDC breaker, in simpleterms, will enable the transmission system tomaintain power flow even if there is a fault onone of the lines.’
What’s next? The obvious follow-on step isto identify a suitable location and slot in thenew breaker into a pilot installation. Thencould logically follow a realistic attempt toconnect the lines and optimise the network. So ABB is already working on the constructionof multi-terminal systems, the new breakerbeing a major step in the evolution ofcomplete high-voltage grids that can betapped at any point.
The company also points out, as haveothers, that HVDC lines offer significantenvironmental advantages insofar as theyrequire less space to install on or under theground (and sea, of course; they are widelyused in this form within Europe). They don’tneed any intrusive - and very costly -transmission towers, either. ■

WORLD GENERATION OFelectricity rose 1.8 per cent in2012 according to thebehind-the-scenes annexes
to the latest ‘BP Statistical Review ofWorld Energy’*. This was precisely thesame increase as the rise in all-formsenergy consumption overall. Electricalpower consumption in the heavilyindustrialised OECD countries (not quitethe same as generation) fell again, although by only 0.4 points, much lessthan in the previous year. Elsewhere therise was 3.9 per cent.
The net result is that the majorindustrialised countries – now only by thenarrowest of margins the principalgrouping in terms of oil consumption –now produce and use less than one-half ofthe world’s all-forms electricity supply.
In his foreword to the latest edition ofthis important and long-running statisticalseries Chief Executive Bob Dudley pointsout that there was a slowdown in thegrowth of energy consumption generallylast year. This arose partly from economicnecessities – especially higher prices -and partly from more efficient usage.
Also, he wrote, “the supply of energy iscoming from an increasing diversity ofsources”; new and particularly renewablesources of electrical power generation areprominent amongst these.
Companies and institutions in the Gulfare playing a key role in developing thissector, both Masdar and the new Shams Iconcentrating solar plant in the Emiratesbeing world-leading examples.
On the all-forms energy supply side themost significant phenomenon remains theAmerican shale revolution, now affecting
the oil market nearly as much as naturalgas; power generation economics basedon gas have already been transformed as aresult of this in North America, but almostnowhere else. The year saw the largest-ever increase in US production of crude. And disruptions to world oil output in othercountries (notably in Africa and Syria, forexample) were more than offset by growthamongst OPEC producers in general.
Despite all these changes, and theconcerns about air quality, coal remainedthe fastest-growing fossil fuel on an all-world basis last year. China aloneconsumed a massive one-half of the total
supply, most of it home produced, ofcourse. In turn most of this Chinese-distributed coal was again burned inconventional thermal power plants, of anunfashionable type almost unknown herein MENA.
Gas, the fastest-growing fuel for powergeneration overall in most recent years, was the only hydrocarbon product to seeconsumption growth accelerate again lastyear, even though this was at a below-average rate. Much cheaper gascompeted strongly with coal in NorthAmerica, significantly displacing it as afeedstock for generating power (andsaving massive amounts of harmfulemissions in the process).
The BP energy team note thathydroelectricity and various forms ofrenewables – including wind andphotovoltaics in Europe and the newgeneration of CSP and other solar plantselsewhere - competed strongly againstcoal globally last year. Renewables inpower generation increased by 15 per centyear-on-year, they point out.

The world power market was alsosignificantly disrupted by the profoundand long-running after-effects of thenuclear power disaster at Fukushima, bothin Japan (where nuclear output fell by 89per cent in 2012) and elsewhere, wheresome major nuclear-equipped countriessuch as Germany announced accelerationsof their phase-out policies. Globally, totalfusion/fission output fell by 6.9 per cent. Not in all members of the nuclear club byany means, however. Several OECDcountries are actually stepping up thepace, even though development andinstallation costs have risen sharply as aresult of the Japanese disaster.
The good news deducible from all this,as far as the Gulf is concerned, is that“Fossil fuel imports rose to compensate”.Most MENA states are doing everythingthey can to generate power from non-hydrocarbon sources, including evenhydro where this is possible.
The renewable sector saw mixed resultsin 2012, the report says. Renewableenergy used in power generation grew by15.2 per cent. The solar sub-sectorincreased even faster, by 58 per cent.
However the net result was that renewableforms of energy (including biofuels andbiomass) still accounted for a mere 2.4per cent of all-forms global energyconsumption last year. But in the powersector the outcome was much better.“Renewables in power generationaccounted for a record 4.7 per cent of
global power generation” the text of themain report says.

A UAE-BASED DISTRIBUTOR of automotivespare parts has reported battery unit salesof nearly US$1.5mn to the regionalconstruction industry and its associatedsectors in the first half of this year, a figurethat is responsible for increasing one of itsdivision’s operations by over two thirds inthe space of just 12 months.A-MAP, which is headquartered in Dubai andoperates a network of branch offices in Asia,Africa and North America, says that sales ofSolite batteries - the Original EquipmentManufacturer (OEM) for automotivebatteries in both Hyundai and Kia vehicles, and for which A-MAP is the region’sexclusive distributor - has been responsiblefor its Fleet and Corporate Departmentgrowing by 70 per cent over the first half of2013. The rocketing sales of vehiclebatteries is something that the organisationattributes to two phenomena; the GCCgovernments’ plans to invest US$1 trillion todevelop their infrastructure and theexpansion of the fleet car market in the UAE.“The incredible growth of our Fleet andCorporate Department that has been
undertaken over the period of just one yearis a direct result of both the boomingconstruction sector in the GCC, particularlythe UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and theincreased sales of cars to UAE fleetoperators,” said Asad Badami, ManagingDirector of A-MAP. Badami revealed that theburgeoning construction sector is creatingan increased demand for power units fromoperators of heavy plant machinery that isessential for the blueprinted projectsearmarked for the region. According to arecent report by Deloitte, the professionalservices firm, these projects include theestimated US$400bn plans tobuild schools, houses, universities, a new railwayinfrastructure, airportextensions and roadimprovements in SaudiArabia, as well as the on-going development inQatar to ready thecountry for their hostingof the 2022 FIFA WorldCup.
“Over the past 12 months we have securedsome important new contracts with majorplayers within the construction, recyclingand Genset industries to supply batteriesfor their heavy equipment,” said Badami. These include 20 top tier companiesincluding Al Faris Rental, one of the region’sbiggest heavy equipment rental companies, and Beaah, the Middle East’s award-winningfully integrated environment and wastemanagement company, as well as Byrne,
Speedy, DP World, S.S Lootah, Dutcoand Averda among others.“The growing fleet car market isreflective of greater confidencein the regional economy. Larger
companies are now happyto put money into fleetcars to service theirrespective businessesand the tourism trend is

ELECRAMA 2014, THE world's largestpower transmission anddistribution (T&D) exhibition, willbe held in Bangalore between
January 8-12, and will showcase the globalcompetitiveness of Indian electricalproducts and the capability of domesticmanufacturers to develop world-classengineering products at a competitive cost.
The 11th biennial event, to be hosted bythe Indian Electrical & ElectronicsManufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), theindustry body representing the country’spower and electrical equipment industry, will serve as the ideal platform for Indianindustry to connect with the partners fromacross the globe, including the Middle East.
Rapid developmentIEEMA's flagship exposition is poised for aquantum leap in terms of eventexperience, ambience, context, commerceand is moving to the newest world-classexhibition location in India - BangaloreInternational Exhibition Centre (BIEC),which has 40,000 sqm of covered column-less air-conditioned exhibition spacespread over 34 acres.
Just like India, Middle East nations too,are undergoing rapid power sectordevelopment. The region has witnessedstrong growth in the consumption ofelectricity over the past few years, and ispoised to grow at an even faster pace in thenext decade. Among a raft of countries inthe Middle East, electricity consumption incountries like Qatar and Oman is projectedto grow at a double-digit compoundedannual growth rate (CAGR) during 2011-2014, on the back of increasing demandfrom the residential and industrial sectors.
Oman’ power sector has been one of thefastest growing in the Middle-East, andinstalled electricity capacity and
consumption are expected to grow at aCAGR of around 16 per cent and 12.5 percent, respectively during 2011-2014.
Several other Middle-Eastern countriesincluding the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc. also exhibit strong future growthpotential in the electricity sector.
With growing industrialisation and rapidurbanisation being witnessed by the Gulfstates in the last five years, demand fortransmission and distribution (T&D)networks, too, has increased sharply.
OpportunityAs a result, the power T&D sector in theGulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries- comprising of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman,Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE - is
expected to witness rapid growth, withinvestments totalling US$60 billion in thenext five years.
Given the flourishing bilateral tradebetween India and the Middle Eastnations, which stood at over US$ 205bn in2012-13, ELECRAMA-2014 will provide anopportunity for business visitors from theMiddle East to also take part in variousconcurrent events.
Through the ‘Go Global’ theme, India istargeting a five per cent share of globaltrade in electrical equipment in the nextten years in order to help exports reach alevel of US$25bn.
ELECRAMA-2014 will serve as the idealplatform for Indian industry to connectwith appropriate partners across theglobe, including those from the MiddleEast, Central Asia, Africa, Latin America,
ELECRAMA-2014 will feature concurrentevents, such as TRAFOTECH 2014, whichwill provide transformer designers, manufacturers, users and consultantswith a common platform to review thelatest advances and futuristic trends, share operational experiences anddiscuss the requirements of transformers

for smart grid systems. ELECRAMA-2014will also feature the CEOs Summit,International T&D Conclave and theEngineer Infinite 2014.
Presently, India's electrical equipmentindustry size exceeds US$25bn and thecountry aims to reach an output ofUS$100bn by balancing both exports andimports in the coming years. It contributes1.4 per cent to the nation’s GDP and 10 percent to manufacturing GDP. For the globalelectrical & electronics (E&E)manufacturers, a US$300bn developmentthrust into the Indian power sector is amassive opportunity.
This fact is recognised by many foreigncompanies. Jean Pascal Tricoire, Chairmanand CEO of Schneider Electric SA, said:“India is a large and important market forthe electrical industry and ELECRAMA asalways is a window to this market. Thisevent offers a platform the electricalindustry globally to showcasecapabilities, to meet customers and tonetwork with the various industry players. It is the best place for companies lookingto engage with all electrical industrystakeholders under one roof to bepresent. Schneider Electric is happy to bepartnering in this industry gathering.”
The Indian electrical equipmentindustry has a diversified, mature andstrong manufacturing base, with a robustsupply chain. A rugged performancedesign of domestically manufacturedelectrical equipment has evolved over theyears to meet the tough network demandsin the country. Indian industry is seekingpartners to build capacity and compete ona global scale.
Critical roleGlobal trade in electrical equipment isclose to US$600bn, with India’s sharebeing less than one per cent. The Indianelectrical equipment industry exported 15-20 per cent of their product portfolios, amounting to US$5bn between 2012-13.
India is targeting a gross domesticproduct (GDP) growth rate of 8-9 per centin the coming years, and to enable thisgrowth, the country’s economy needs the
support of its power sector and India’selectrical equipment industry is expectedto play a critical role in improving itspower infrastructure.
The Indian power sector story has beenencouraging with total installedgeneration capacity as of March 31, 2013reaching 2,23,344 MW, includingrenewables at 27,541 MW and hydro at39,491 MW. In the 12th Plan (2012-17), thegeneration capacity addition target hasbeen fixed at 88,537 MW.
Planned additions in the transmissionsector include 1,10,34 km of transmissionlines, 2,70,000 MVA of AC transformationcapacity, and 19,250 MW bi-pole linkcapacity of HVDC systems. The inter-regional power transfer capacity isprojected to increase to 65,550 MW by2017 as compared to 27,750 MW in 2012.
The growth of the Indian power sectorwill see exponential demand for electricalequipment in the coming years.
Based on investment estimates andcapacity addition targets, annualdomestic demand for power generationequipment could be in the region ofUS$25-30bn by 2022; for powertransmission & distribution equipment, itmay be in the range of US$70–75bn. ■

LED LIGHTING SALES in the Middle East are booming, with projections showing the total sales value willdouble in the next few years. When asked whatdrives the expansion, energy saving is not theonly factor, according to Segula Limited'sManaging Director, Niall Murray. Segula is aGerman brand offering LED bulbs in thetraditional incandescent style without heatsink ordriver. Designed in this specially patented manner,Segula claims these LED bulbs are more reliablethan their counterparts as they contain less electricalcomponents in the power supply which are prone tofailure. They also generate less heat, a big plus whenconsidering additional energy savings from lower airconditioning costs due to the switch to Segula LED.Customers include the Venetian Casino in Macau and theExcelsior hotel in Cologne, for example.
"Apart from fulfilling the strict EU regulations onenergy savings, in our experience precision in lightcolour and appearance is just as important, asthese product characteristics also project a senseof quality for the user", said Murray.
Saudi Arabia is the largest market for Segula's retrofit LEDlightbulbs at the moment, doubling almost every year inturnover. In the Kingdom, private owners as well as businesseshave a huge interest in using LED to reduce maintenance costsand achieve better overall lighting results. For existing fixturesthere is no need to change anything inside, offering true like-for-
like bulb replacement. Given these benefits, the aimis to convince an increasing number of residential
projects to specify Segula LED as the LED ofchoice in the coming few months. Saudi Arabiais experiencing a huge push by the authoritiesto adopt energy saving lighting in schools, hospitals and other public buildings. More than
US$400bn will be spent on infrastructureprojects with more than 1.25mn new homes to be
constructed. Murray says this is the reason Segulahas branched out from traditional bulbs into offering
more powerful LED solutions such as the lighteststreetlight without heat sink – weighing just 7kg and
capable of operating in extreme desert conditions. Alsonew in the product line-up are Segula's new T8 tubes infull plastic, without heatsink and fully sealed. "We haveheld several workshops with different ministry officials.
They understand the benefits of our LED and theylike the idea of saving energy cost by using lightingsolutions. So we will be doing some testingtogether."
There is still a lot of work to be done as Segula is new to themarket having only really established a regional presence threeyears ago with a booth at the Middle East Electricity event. Butaccording to Murray, the decision to expand into the Middle Easthas paid off. "Besides Asia, the Gulf is certainly our fastestgrowing market and we are planning to expand faster in thecoming months".

GULF STATES HAVE shown greatinterest in nuclear power inrecent times, with Saudi Arabiaand the UAE gearing up to
launch their first reactors within thecoming years.
It’s a costly investment strategy - civilnuclear power plants do not come cheap -and one that would have seemed unlikelyjust a few years earlier.
The region’s traditional reliance onfossil fuels, plus a general stance to keepthe Gulf nuclear-free - reiterated manytimes in the face of Iran’s own contentiousresearch programme - made the nuclearoption unappealing, politically andeconomically, until only recently.
But the times are changing, it seems.
ShiftAccording to Laura el-Katiri, a researchfellow at the Oxford Institute for EnergyStudies, the introduction of civiliannuclear programmes is symptomatic of ashift in the way the region produces andconsumes energy.
She says fast-rising levels of domesticenergy consumption have already madethe Gulf a regional energy consumer torival the combined energy demand ofLatin America.
“This renders alternative sources ofenergy, including nuclear power, anincreasingly attractive long-term solutionin view of the region’s otherwise rapidlyrising drag on its own main exportproducts, crude oil and natural gas,” shecomments in a recent research paper, GCCand the Nuclear Question.
Although there is a huge new wave ofthermal power infrastructure building stilltaking place to meet this surge in demand,Gulf officials are clearly planning ahead.
And it is not only meeting projectedelectricity demand that is forcing the issue.
It is an investment strategy that goesbeyond pure supply and demandeconomics.
For GCC states, civil nuclear powercarries a wide range of strategic, politicaland energy security benefits that add to itsattractiveness.
Though it is clearly not for all: the 2011Fukushima disaster in Japan, plus thethorny issue of nuclear waste disposal, will not endear it to environmentalists.
But, away from the hullabaloo of Iran, thereis now a huge range of nuclear researchinitiatives underway across the Gulf.
The GCC’s most advanced project, AbuDhabi began construction of its firstnuclear reactor, Barakah-1, in July 2012;the intention is to follow this with threefurther reactors.
The four-reactor complex could addsome 5.6GW of electricity to the UAE’spower sector by 2020, making a hugeimpact on the nation’s precarious energysupply/demand balance.
Cost-competitiveThis first GCC project (worth upwards ofUS$20bn) is unlikely to be cost-competitive with the UAE’s extensivenatural gas-based electric power, however, though it will help to underpinenergy security for years to come. It alsoplaces Abu Dhabi - and the EmiratesNuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) - at thevanguard of nuclear research in the Gulf, just as it has emerged a pioneer in therenewables segment, as world host to theInternational Renewable Energy Agency.
Saudi Arabia is rolling out a huge new-build thermal generation programme tohelp meet fast-rising energy demand. Butit is also keen to reduce its heavydependence on using its own gas andliquid fuels for power, hence the appeal of

nuclear energy. The Kingdom’s largepopulation also presents an additionalchallenge, especially as the economyexpands, sucking in even more energy.
Actively involvedPotentially, Saudi Arabia could becomethe region’s biggest nuclear powerproducer over the next 20 years or so, ifcurrent plans proceed. This could see theconstruction of some 16 nuclear powerplants with a combined capacity of 17GW,providing roughly one-sixth of thecountry’s anticipated electricity needsaround 2035. The total project cost couldexceed a staggering US$80bn.
Qatar was actively involved in the GCCdecision of 2006 to pursue nuclear energyfor peaceful purposes and announcedplans to build its own plant in 2008. It hasalso raised the possibility of a regionalproject for nuclear power generation.Likewise, Kuwait too has shown muchinterest in nuclear power. It has signedvarious nuclear cooperation agreementswith countries such as the USA, France,Russia and Japan.
In 2010, it announced a plan to build
four reactors by 2022 but this wasscrapped the following year. Outside theGCC region, the other leading light inadvancing nuclear power is Jordan, which is making great strides on its firstreactor project.
CrucialSo, all change in the Gulf then, as nuclearpower begins to gain in popularity.
But so many questions remainunanswered, including crucial detailssuch as pricing and competitiveness.
Whether nuclear power will realisticallyoffer the GCC the long-term solution itneeds to manage its rising consumptionremains uncertain.
The current absence of cost-recoveringtariffs throughout the region alreadyrenders effective cost recovery fornuclear power unlikely, reckons el-Katiri.
This, therefore, implies a substantialbill – in the form of nuclear powersubsidies – to be picked up by the GCCgovernments.
And, potentially, the outlook is evenbleaker for the more cynical-minded.
“The acquisition of nuclear technologyby GCC states, albeit for civilianpurposes, provides fuel to those critics ofnuclear power who fear a nuclear armsrace in the Gulf should Iran pursue anuclear weapons programme in thefuture,” says el-Katiri. ■
