How to Call to and from Research Laboratories at Clayton or Monash
These telephone numbers have 541 as the prefix followed by four figure extension number, e.g. 541 6311.
Incoming Calls from tne Public Network
The number listed in the Melbourne Telephone Directory for Clayton/Monash offices is 541 6444. Regular callers from the public network should be asked to use the direct facility by dialling the full number, e.g. 541 6311, to minimise the operating load on the switchboard operators.
To Transfer Calls
An incoming call connected by the switchboard operator (541 6444) or a directly dialled call can be transferred to another extension.
tell the caller you will transfer the call.
press the small transfer button at the bottom right hand side of the front of the telephone. The outside caller will be placed in HOLD and cannot overhear your conversationg
when you hear the PABX dial tone, dial the wanted extension number -
Wait for the extension to answer and explain that you are transferring a call and pass on any infonnation the outside caller may have given you. (Don't make the outside caller repeat the whole story again).
Advise the receiver of the call to press the transfer button and the call will be transferred.
if extension engaged, not answered or for any reason you wish to return to the outside caller, press your transfer button followed by# button.
Enquiry Calls
To make an enquiry call:
If, during an incoming call from the public exchange, you wish to make an enquiry to another extension:
Press the small transfer button momentarily.
On receipt of dial tone, dial the wanted number.
To reconnect to the incoming call in the event of:
a. Dialling a wrong number. b. Receiving no reply to the enquiry call. c. Receiving Busy Tone. d. Completing the enquiry call.
Press the sma11 transfer button again followed by# button.
To receive dial tone for another enquiry call:
Press the small transfer button once more and dial the wanted number.
To recall the operator during an incoming exchange line call:
Press the small transfer button momentarily.
On receipt of dial tone, dial 9.
INCOMING CALLS TO THE LABS
If an extension is busy any incoming call from the public exchange to that extension will automatically divert to the switchboard operator.
Call Intrusion
When engaged on a call you may hear a warning tone (two short beeps) indicating that you are required on an urgent call and that the PABX operator is able to hear and speak on your connection. Hang up and await the call, after explaining the reason to the caller.
r.amp on Busy
In-coming exchange line callers who ask the PABX operator for connection to an extension that is found to be engaged may be placed in a queue (via auto call back facility) and automatically connected when the wanted extension becomes free.

FAULTS AND DIFFICULTIES
Clayton/Monash staff should report faults and service difficulties to the Switchboard (Dial 9). City staff should report faults and service difficulties to 1100. If your phone is faulty report the trouble immediately. If you have trouble dialling a number take time out to report the occurrence.
TEMPORARY STAFF MOVEMENTS
Staff are asked to inform the switchboard operator (Dial 9) of any short tenn absences (eg. Rec. Leave, Furlough, Higher Duties, etc) from their normal work place.
